Sharing my current Krita workflow instead of a finished gen.

Workflow breakdown:
Image 1: Original image sourced from a wallpaper site (starting reference)
Image 2: Inpainting + ControlNet Canny applied
From here on, I stopped using ControlNet.
I separated the character from the background into 2 distinct layers using Krita's Background Removal tool (Menu -> Filters -> Background Removal).
Krita comes with a lightweight detection model, but their GitHub repo has 2 heavier models available. I used the heavier ones since they provide much better precision for extracting characters from backgrounds.
This left me with one layer for the character and another for the background.
Renamed the layer of the character with "Character"
I regenerated the entire background at low denoise, including the alpha/transparent area where the character was removed.
For the character, I needed to adjust the body proportions. I did this easily using the vision tools plugin (https://github.com/Acly/krita-vision-tools the blue square icon on the left), along with some manual adjustments.
This plugin allowed me to select specific parts like the head, upper torso, flag, pole, or limbs and adjust their proportions individually, which was super convenient.
Once I corrected the proportions, I started sculpting the character using inpaint at 0.3-0.5 denoise. Right now I'm about to do a second pass of inpainting to give the character more coherence and definition. After that, I'll probably work on refining the background further.

it's effectively a "smart" posterize pass(photoshop function that compresses/limits color space). Which is something I've wanted someone to do for a long fucking time.
Now what I'd really like is for someone to get this working as a chainner node where you can automate batches in a way that isn't complete ass. Or at least an addendum to the script to operate on a (potential batch function) in/out directory where it outputs the new file with an identical name as the input file.

I did a 3840x2160 image and it worked fine, then I bumped it up to 5760x3240 and it did the bug; faint glitchy lines. I saw catastrophic shit happening with another really large pic too. Edge preserving filter is at fault, not sure if it's the settings or the actual function itself. In any case you could always split really large images into tiles and process each section before piecing it back together as a hack.

Thanks for posting this. Since I don't use Comfy, I've deducted an alternate method using Photoshop surface blur and the addon G'MIC. Inside G'MIC I use the option Iain Noise Reduction 2019, I set the Mid and Large to about 12 and 10. Then I set Surface Blur to Radius 30 and threshold to 4. These settings get rid of the cum noise and the background banding pretty well.

I looked myself (I know I'm autistic) and it seems you're using 0.05 for sigma_r on the right. I put 0.01 on the guide with gradients in mind. Here's a pic with 0.01 in the middle and 0.05 on the right (I layered it over yours and it looks identical).
Obviously 0.01 still isn't identical to the reference but it won't nuke edge cases like gradients, unlike 0.05 which I recommend for flat styles.

That's not exclusively an inpaint-related phenomenon. It's also much, much harder to remove - no easy way like content aware fill. I've just sort of accepted it as a byproduct of SD in general and just leave it unless it's super glaring. The alternative would be painstakingly careful, PERFECT manual shooping because if you try the whole imperfect shoop => inpaint thing, the inpaint will just add it back haha.
I'm certainly not going to sit here and do painstakingly careful, perfect manual shooping on literally all of the lineart of every image.

It's funny, in some cases the filter is removing them and in other cases it's amplifying them.
Those "halos" can be present in even initial gens. Then, it seems like each img2img run, whether it be full image or an inpaint, amplifies them more. They get really noticeable when you img2img/inpaint over the same piece of lineart multiple times.
When they get super glaring, you can do a quick, sloppy shoop then inpaint to reduce back down to the level it was probably at after the initial gen. That's what I do. It seems like completely eliminating them is a wild goose chase, though.

Typically its just artists being sloppy on layers.
Any gradient fills struggle with that sort of thing, worse when you start adding on more and more layers to blend and then try feathering it out and it all turns into one compounding mess.

For me, it's base gen (no hiresfix) => upscale (using upscale option in extras menu in ReForge) => inpaint. Hiresfix involves denoise, so it's a gacha roll that can introduce undesirable elements to an image. I do not like gacha rolls with long processing times, which is exactly what a gen with hiresfix is, so I do not use it.
I do not use adetailer as I prefer to have full manual control over all inpaints and adetailer is essentially automated inpainting.
This is the way to go if you want full manual control over everything. Those who prefer automation at the possible expense of quality may prefer using hiresfix and adetailer.

It's base gen (no hiresfix) => inpainting large-scale errors => upscale (using extras menu) => inpainting small errors and inpainting small masked sections only at large resolutions to add detail
Large-scale errors are indeed best inpainted prior to upscaling.
Post-upscaling inpainting is for the purposes of fixing small errors and adding detail.

This is typically not something that will be the result of inpainting small sections of your image post-upscaling, since post-upscaling inpainting is usually done at a low denoise. This is typically present in an initial gen. If it is, you either need to regen the same seed at a lower CFG, use the over-saturated image as a source for Canny and do a whole new gen with a new seed using Canny, or just reduce the saturation with an image editor.

So if you're going to try base gen (no hiresfix), upscale then inpaint, I'll explain a little more.
First of all, I use 4xNomos8kDAT for upscaling. You may end up preferring something else, but your choice of upscaler may not be all that consequential since you'll be inpainting over *everything* anyways.
Once I upscale, I inpaint over the entire image at 0.1 denoise to remove any upscaling artifacts. This is typically done in a series of four inpaints - the upper left, upper right, lower left and lower right of the image.
If your gen is portrait or square aspect ratio and has no more than 2160 vertical pixels (going past this is unreasonable to me since most people don't have >4k displays), you should easily be able to accomplish this with only four inpaints since Illustrious 1-based models like WAI and Noob can do 1536x1536 inpaints (or any of the values in pic related x1.5).
After doing this, I simply inspect the image and fix any minor flaws by roughly shooping them out then inpainting over the shoops.
For sections where you may want increased detail (eyes, fingernails, toenails, etc.), you mask only what you want to inpaint, do a masked only inpaint, and set the inpaint resolution high like 1536x1536.
So, let's say you're inpainting over a hand that's 200x200 pixels. You want to give the hand more detail, particularly in the fingernails. You mask the hand, prompt with hand and fingernails tags, and inpaint masked only with resolution set to 1536 with denoise set to like 0.3 or 0.4. It's going to actually gen the hand at 1536 then downscale it and seamlessly blend the downscale with the rest of the image in the end. The result will be a super-detailed hand.

That's what Controlnet is for. I usually use Canny for this. You can use Depth instead of Canny if you want to use a pose without necessarily preserving the exact lineart like Canny will.

That being said, it *is* optimal to only prompt what you are inpainting.
So, if I'm inpainting just a hand against a grey background with WAI, my prompt will be:

Masterpiece and best quality used because those are WAI's recommended tags.
Some people say using tags like these "slop" images. In my experience, not using a model's recommended tags typically completely fucks things like anatomy and composition.
