so whats the issue here with the steam machine's HDMI? people say that it couldnt be hdmi 2.1 because of the HDMI forum licensing issue due to open software on linux but valve saying its feature parity to 2.1, that means youre getting the full 4:4:4 chroma right?
>>
HDMI 2.0 at 3840x2160 120Hz only works with YUV 4:2:0

it would be YUV 4:4:4 with HDMI 2.1

>but valve saying its feature parity to 2.1
Where did they say that?
>>
They didn't say that. They're working on some individual features that could be implemented without calling it full HDMI 2.1, but I doubt even that's going to happen considering the licensing shitfest.

I might be wrong but once I found out some devices only have internal DP linkings and they use a built in converter to convert the signal to HDMI and send it to the HDMI port, but to what the GPU, PCH, etc. is concerned, everything is displayport. Is this true? would that be the case with the gabecube?

That's how Intel does it. They use a PCON chip to convert an internal DP signal to external HDMI 2.1. That's how it can work on Linux. The licensed code is in the firmware of the PCON chip, so it will work no matter the OS or driver.

Valve probably does something similar.
