What's a good media library software for Linux that can launch external applications? These past weeks I decided to switch from Windows and started making the transition by transferring all my things for Linux (in this case Zorin OS). I'm incredibly satisfied with my decision but one my biggest troubles is finding a program for Linux that acts as media library for my local files, that also has a moderately high customizable interface & can launch files in selected libraries in executable local 3rd party external applications, such as "Okular", "Krita" or "VLC" for example. So far the best I could find is Playnite and Kodi, but to use Playnite I would have to use a Virtual Machine, Lutris, Wine or I guess Bottles, but I am not willing to use applications that are not available natively in Linux or that will create a running Windows in my PC, unless those are truly my only options to achieve what I desire & Kodi is rather confusing and unpleasant to use, even while using a different skin, reading guides and watching a lot of tutorials to try to set up things the way I want it does not function correctly or ends up giving me unnecessary things I will not use anytime soon, that just hinders what I was trying for.I do not need a huge metadata catalog or a lot of add-ons that will scour the web to give me a whole bundle of information about a media or game that I will probably not use, in fact I plan to manually input the information myself of if not all of the files, at least the great majority of them, so lots of add-ons just ends up being more junk that has no purpose for me.

>>107457881>>107457881I added a keyfile to my NAS, put it in a thumb drive, and made it so the decryption only happens if the usb stick is plugged in with the correct keyfile. Was kind of a bitch because there was a race condition between the drives wanting to decrypt on boot and the usb drive needing to mount, but I finally made it work with an initramfs script. Completely useless since I don't expect the police to come knocking on my door for my collection of Gianna Michaels' entire filmography, but I like feeling like I have a switch to my NAS that will make the whole thing inaccessible if I remove it. It's like I'm in a spy movie!Though my NAS won't even boot up without the usb drive now. Should I leave it like that or not?

Stupid question about SAS drives.Ive had two old HGSTs that never reported SMART properly, used to not show anything in the past, it cant run a standard SMART test, in some newer software it only shows ECC rather than all the typical SMART info (smartctl couldn't read it in the past either).I just though that was bc they are from some old EMC SAN and have some weird firmware (used to be 520 sector or smth when i got them, had to fix that to use it) and never thought much of it.Now im replacing one of them after QDiskInfo pops up with a "Grown defects count: 22" and Caution rating with a brand new retail Ultrastar DC HC570 22TB SAS I got a good deal on and it too only reports the same SMART entries as the old drives (ECC only)Using Debian on Dell R720 with H710p HBA card.TLDR: Is SAS SMART different from SATA SMART on all drives or are all my drives/system broken? Is that enough info to go off of, how to interpret the values? Assume good move to replace that aging drive that gave 22 errors of some kind or was that just due to bad firmware? Also my other old SAS drive still reports Good status and no "grown defects" but it does have a shit ton of errors corrected by ECC delayed way more than my supposedly failing old drive)? Both checksum files fine against backup, i put the failing one away with the data on it as an offline backup.Pic of failing drive SMART, smartctl and all 3 drives show the same data instead of what a SATA drive would show.
>>107467899I wouldn't buy anything below 20TB (or whatever the biggest you can afford/need)Negative is if you run RAID without a backup and need rebuild is gonna be slow and potentially dangerous, if you're broke like me just don't run RAID and have backup and then I really don't see the downside, I hate nothing more than having to move stuff between drives, large drives and mergerfs solves that. People say helium drives will leak quick, I only had my drives for a few years so its been perfect so far we'll see long term, youll just have to put up with it sooner or later anyways since everything above 8TB is helium.~30TB+ has some crazy complex heads too, they will only get more complex from here.Have backups, bays are expensive so more storage in less is always better.

I have an old laptop that I'd really like to repurpose as a NAS for my 8TB external HDD if it's still usable. I was looking at TrueNAS and FreeNAS, but they require 8GB RAM minimum. What are my options? Why is so much RAM required these days for something like this? I just want basic file transfers while having my files protected with passwords and stuff that only I can access on a home network shared with family and it'd be nice to access files remotely with my newer (also old now ffs) laptop at work as well. I've really never done any sort of network storage apart from sharing select folders and printers across PCs at a few workplaces.
