No. Cheaper open headphones are all fairly bright. X2's are bassy, but lack sub-bass kick, and won't really be much bassier than 668B's. Good bassy open backs are only really found from planars.

You know how people are, if something is close to a certain subjective standard created by a respected company, said something must be the very definition of what the subjective standard tries to convey, untill something closer to the standard comes along and then that will be the very definition of it and so on, even if nothing really gets there.
No matter how harmful it might be, people just love dealing in absolutes.

I think it was originally covered by a thin white faux-leather that eventually dried and started flaking.

It does look weird though, especially around the ears, as if white mold is sprouting in little cultures.

Must be an extremely old pair, but useful since old earphones were generally better built.

This is true? Everyone touts the X2's as muddy bass cannons.
The 668b's definitely have a midbass bump, but I don't consider them too bass heavy.

If you get enough volume you are likely good already. The output can still be really shitty though. Modern smartphones tend to be good. Try it with your phone. You shouldn't be hearing massive differences if both outputs are decent.

>>59985583
X2 is more bassy. 668b has a larger midbass boost but also a lot of treble energy making it prominently V-shaped. X2 is more or less a slope which goes down the higher in frequency you go. There's a single treble peak higher up but that isn't as prominent as the 668b. X2 is warm sounding overall and the bass is less boomy and deeper than 668b.

If you like warm & female vocals, have you tried the Campfire Lyra II? Also, I wouldn't got CIEM unless you know that you want a specific design. Tip-rolling is a nice option, and you aren't really getting a sound-to-money ratio from a CIEM compared to a UIEM, just a custom fit. A CIEM will be harder to sell if you end up not liking it or wanting to upgrade, too.

Yes because it's a million times better than nothing and I'm trying to convince him to buy an amp. I'm not going to recommend some full retard amp, especially when I don't think other amps would get much more out of his headphones. The fulla 2 is great despite the price.

>I'm assuming he needs an amp, he should know, otherwise he wouldn't be bringing it up
He just got the DT880s and was looking into getting DAC/amp to "unlock full potential" of the headphones which doesn't mean anything and in all its vagueness is just audiophool nonsense.
>Also he uses a laptop. The fulla 2 is going to be an improvement and we both know it.
Yes it will. Question is does he need it and is there anything to gain there except more volume. I don't care if he gets an amplifier or DAC or shakti stones. I just want him to make an educated decision about it instead of telling "buy this", especially without any kind of knowledge of the current setup.

Can I expect a cheap ground loop isolator like this to noticeably degrade sound quality with entry level headphones like the ATH-T500?
I mean, I know I can buy a Jensen for $200, but I wonder whether it isn't mostly just placebo like premium audio cables.
All I know is they're all based on isolation transformers, but I just don't know enough about circuits to tell whether it can even have any impact at all.

He is right tho, HD600 and HD800 both have THD that won't bother anyone so why not EQ HD600 to sound like HDD800? Except it never works that way, and EQ them flat I would still easily tell them apart by sound, finding song artifacts was much easier on HD800. It's funny when people look at FR and THD and think they know everything about product now.
>>
>>59984985
2 years or so actually

>>
>>59989597
A ground loop on headphones is just impossible. You need conflicting ground voltage references to form a ground loop. Headphones have only one ground voltage reference : the input plug cold ring.

You might have a ground loop between your audio source and headphone amplifier for example, but the most likely explanation would be a faulty plug somewhere.
>>
>>59988557
Well, after listening to them for a few hours I have no idea what to do next. Before I bought the 880's I read that an amp was strongly recommended with the 250/600 ohm versions.
>>
>>59983710
Nope. STAX and the tropics don't go so well together... I kept having channel balance issues with my O2.

I want to go back to STAX but it's too risky if there is no local distributor around.

HD800S, most Lambdas, most Omegas.
>>
>>59989942

The noise sounds like dial-up, is rhytmic and fluctuates with CPU/HDD load, mouse movement, scrolling etc. How would a faulty plug do that?
Pulling all of the peripherials doesn't work.
>>
>>59989851
Small spikes in the treble are nearly impossible to eq-out completely. Also transducer position is not the same on HD600 and HD800.

Have you ever considered running something like this? My house is old as fuck so a complete isolation transformer to generate clean AC is the only solution to remove ground loops completely.
>>
>>59990172
You don't have a ground loop, that's straight electrical interference. Get an external dac/amp or a properly insulated internal source.
>>
>>59990023
The only thing changing between the versions is their voltage sensitivity. The higher impedance versions will be less loud from the same output than the low impedance ones. If you are not limited by how loud you can drive them, there isn't an issue related to the headphone load specifically. The output might still be poor or it might be all you need. I recommended you to try them with your smartphone for comparison. It can at least weed out total crap tier products but I doubt you are looking at one if you didn't notice a problem already, new headphones or not.
>>
>>59990185
I used Sonarworks plugin and I think they knew what they were doing. Driver position influences sounstage mostly, but it was easy as fuck to tell those headphones apart when it came to fast songs and drums on metal and you can't get this different from transducer placement alone nor you can see it from FR or THD charts.
>>
Closed or open for metal?
>>
>>59990172
That's just a shitty sound card dude.
A ground loop sounds like hum.

Do what >>59990362 said.
>>
>>59989851
Universal measurement couplers can't hope to tell how the frequency response is at each individual listener's eardrum. If we were able to accurately measure or predict that, we could do what you suggested.

THD is a near pointless measurement.

For those of you who don't have poorfag shit headphones, I'm curious:

Do you enjoy the quality of audio they bring to you? Do you appreciate music more now?

Or are they just another thing for you to spend your disposable income on while desperately hoping the next purchase will make you happy, while looking down on the idiots who surround you and their acceptance of the mediocre and overpriced?
>>
>>59990538
They are very closely related, not that I see people acknowledge that.

>>59990418
Rudolf mentioned a few things offhandedly, anecdotes about Sonarworks. Hopefully I remember them correctly.
One of them was about developing the DSP. The engineers would keep screwing up the implementation, so they eventually gave up on developing it themselves and hired a mathematician to fix it.
In any case, one sample is not representative of all units made. There is always deviation from the reference model that must be accepted in a finished product. An exact calibration for other models of the headphone is not possible. Some margin of error will be permitted in generalizing the EQ target.

Transducer position itself doesn't matter so much, as it creates distinct shifts in the magnitude of the headphone transfer function. The result will vary as the headphone is reseated and replaced on the head.

As for >>59990515 and the interpretation of coupler results:
-Most couplers are poor representations of the human ear, average or otherwise. Material stiffness and anatomical accuracy are some more notable errors. Simulated drum impedance is ill controlled and defined, although this will have more obvious relevance to measurements of earphones.
-The recorded result at the eardrum is not so important compared to how it relates to the subject's natural transfer function.
-Individual results may not matter as much as one might first assume. These will be concentrated to high frequency deviations within the top one and one-half octaves or so.

Once you gain experience and know what kind of sound you're looking for then it's smooth sailing onward. For example I highly value a fast PRaT so for the past 5 years or so I only deal with HD800, HD800S and electrostatic. There isn't much happening in the TOTL headphone scene anyway so there isn't rally an urge to upgrade.

There is also another fact that there is a ceiling with headphone system and if you have an unlimited budget then getting a decent 2-channel speaker setup is more rewarding.

As nice as they sound, it's probably not worth the risk considering their going price these days... There is also a chance you get one that comes fitted with O2 drivers, that would suck major balls.

The latest SR-007 made after 2016 does sound awesome though. If I were to get back to STAX, I'll definitely get this one. They're a bloody steal at around two grands which makes you realize how fucked up the prices of TOTL dynamic cans these days.
>>
>>59992317
I'd probably have to convince someone to let go of their pair for about $5k to be honest (working, with original drivers, etc) despite him not having them up for sale.

Anyway, I did read that the new 007s are better than the old Mk2s. I could get an older 007A for pretty cheap though (120k yen give or take).

Just think I'd end up listening to my 009s far more than the 007s.

I don't know about Zeos but I would agree, though only specifically in regards to SR-007 and SR-009. STAX is unmatched in speed, timbre and tonal balance. They also have this uncannily clear sound because of the inherent low distortion of their planar driver.

I still prefer the bass on traditional dynamic cans though.

Considering getting Sennheiser HD 380 Pro for 100$ but i'm not sure if they can play loud... For the longest time i've been using software to increase the sound at the cost of quality but i'm buying a new motherboard with a decent onboard sound card and i'm pretty much looking for headphones to listen to orchestral suites, rock/metal sub-genres, soundtracks(some of which use alot of bass and electro sounds). I generally don't listen to music to relax/when relaxed but rather to induce strong emotions thus why i plan to use them at high db. Element HD-3500G got em for 20€. They played less loud than my older ones (different brand) that were around the same price, i usually boost the sound source by 150% leading to major quality drops to get them playing at my prefered level. However i'd say they're pretty good for their price on everything else i just can't enjoy my music on low.

>>59994762
Maybe the amp in your current source is shit. You could wait until the new motherboard arrives and see if that's louder. I don't have the HD 380s, but the HD 280s were pretty sensitive.

Also personal opinion, uneven or peaky frequency responses get painful or fatiguing at higher volumes, so I turn them down. More neutral FR can have me listening at a higher level.

Preferably with a flat cable, as these will be for more mobile use and tangling is annoying.

comfort is important

I used to have some JBL J22A and loved them but they fell apart, I bought a new pair off Ebay but I think it was a knockoff, also fell apart (though in a different way)
I have some Panasonic RP-HJE120-A and love they way they feel and just don't die, but they are kinda trash sound quality, and the wire tangles endlessly.

It took me a week to start appreciating it. From there, it was smooth sailing.

Also, these do really need an amp, due to very odd impedance response that varies greatly across frequency.

It gets said a lot, but most smartphones do have a headphone amp built in. Try watching some youtube music videos on computer vs phone. If phone sounds different, getting something like a Fulla 2 would be a good idea.

The quality of your music starts to matter here. You should look into getting FLACs or other lossless, at least for your favorite music.

After a couple weeks, try your old headphones, and you'll notice how shit they are.

Audio asylum is a fitting name it seems.

I don't think this is actually an overrun issue though He did replace memcpy wiht A_memcpy.

Sounds more like he's not writing fast enough and the play cursor catches up to the write cursor causing some issues. But it's beyond me how you could have these issues in 2013. It's probably because he's writing into the ringbuffer without regard for the cursors.

I mean just his testing methodology of this player is completely insane.
>"playing wav files from a ramdisk gave best sound"
Yeah, you have speed issues. This isn't the 80's, if the quality of your playback is determined by what device you store the media file on you're simply doing it wrong.

But they can sit there and jerk off/be dumb all they want.
It's quite funny.

Yes, he obviously has no clue what he's doing, which makes it obvious that "bad sound" is highly likely to do with overruns or cuts.

Ex-poorfag here. As someone who has only ever listened with shit-tier Gummi earbuds would I notice a huge difference between the two? I mean I'm able to spend the extra $30 for the 380s but I don't really want to if the 598 will suit me. Noise reduction is really important because busy office so I guess it comes down to that.

HD380 Pro are known to be high noise isolating. Many reviews do mention it isolates more than other closed headphones. HD598cs has no such reputation.

Poor isolation. These headphones don't isolate any sound below 300Hz. However, the closed-back earcups of the HD 598 Cs achieve an average amount of isolation in the Mid Range, by attenuating the sound by about 12dB. In the Treble Range they achieve about 32dB of isolation which is good.
>>
>>59999898
My bad. I should have used quotes, like "facts".

I suggest HD380 Pro for isolation, and HD599 or HD598se for home/noisolationneeded.

Status cb-1 or nvx XPT100.

No you can't. The problems with the procedure are the reason why in headphone research it's common to use a single simulation headphone which switches between multiple equalized profiles of other headphones or target responses. Explain the methodology to blind switch headphones you have in mind.
>>

HD380 will probably provide the best isolation, but the CB-1 and XPT100 will likely be more comfortable and have a more neutral sound.

Idiot question. Among FiiO D03K, O2 amp, and Fulla2, what do I use to connect my headphone with a PS4?

I bought the PS4 for muh gaymen desires without having a TV or speakers, so I had to plug the headphones (M40x) via a monitor for sound. The volumes are maxed out, but I felt that the sound is noticeably quieter compared to when I plug it in Scarlett to listen on PC.

Now that mine have fully died, my only option is to pay $100 for a greasy used pair on eBay, or pay $500 for a new in-box pair from some random person online and probably receive pic related.

Fucking hell, man.
>>
>>59997863
Not really, people think the driver type is associated with certain tonal characteristics and that's just plain wrong.

The technology doesn't matter, it's the implementation and/or personal preferences.

For the record, I prefer listening to a HD650/HD600 over a SR-009 because the latter are more neutral.

All you need is a 3.5 to 3.5 cable that plugs into the left jack on the fulla 2, the other end goes into your ds4 obviously. I use my ps4+fulla 2 with 600's and it goes more than loud enough for me, but nothing crazy. It works great

If you want closed 668B's, take a look at Samson SR950's/Superlux 669's. You can open up the back and put cotton or whatever material you decide to use to dampen the vents.
>>
>>60004860
Yes, but I'd still google for info on the fakes (they're recognizeable), because amazon return abuse is common.

Like in this thread or previous ones, it's not common to see people do things like order 3 headphones to try them out and then return all of them but one.

>>
>>60005544
Yes, I have the SR950 and 668B; They both have the same drivers so it's pretty similar. SR950 is Definitely bassier though it gets muddy at times, the soundstage is bigger than average imo and it clamps a bit more than the 668B/SR850. They're both still pretty comfy.
>>
>>60006048
Try DT770 pads on the 880's. They're stiffer than the stock 880 pads and should help with that issue.

Are headphone amps a meme?

I'm getting decent headphones for the first time, mostly I'm going to listen to music from the computer with a direct cable from the front panel of the pc tower.

So I wanted to know if having an amp would make a noticeable difference or improve the sound quality.

No, I can understand when some people go mad over expensive SS amps, tubes are different tho, but when people tell that you don't need amp at all they are just plain retarded. They are also retarded when they say that amp only to make things louder, there was a very noticeable difference in sound of my HD600 through amp and through just my macbook even tho my mac would go really loud volume wise. But in the end it depends on headphone, shit like HD600 really needs at least a basic amp, shit like X2 may still benefit from an amp but much, much less. DESU most of SS are overpriced and you would do good with either objective 2 or magni 2/fulla 2.
