There are some things that I really like about them. They look cool and the color is great, removable cable, they look comfy, and I've always wanted to own a pair of sennheisers.

HD579, from the measurements I've seen, are basically an HD558/598 with improved sub-bass extension. This means they're the most accurate headphones in their price range, and you can do webm related to them.

>>61872738
That is a design decision unique to the HD600/650/6XX. I am also not aware of a trend of snapping coils in those models.

>>

HD599 is, from what I've seen in FR and reviews, a significant improvement over the HD558/598.
The most perceiveable part of it is vastly improved bass extension.

The HD579 seems to be, by FR, identical, but reviewers do seem to agree it sounds better than the HD599. Either way, it's WAY cheaper so among those two it is the one to get.
>>
>>61872755

The HD-25s have similarly thin voice coils.

It's not. The DAC chip they use supports 192KHz. The switch is there because windows prior to the current win10 do not support usb audio class2 without installing third party drivers. I personally use my modi2uber (has no switch, always expert mode) at 96/24. The reason I do use 96 over 48 or 44.1 is simply that it's high enough that Windows resampler can probably do a good (transparent) job. 44.1 -> 48 and 48 -> 44.1 I just do not trust it to.

>inb4 hd600
>>
>>61874236
It's not a choice.
Videogame music, dvd music, digital tv audio, etc. are typically 48KHz.
CDs are 44.1KHz
Windows has a software mixer that will allow you to hear sound from multiple applications at once. To achieve that, it has to resample.
You're either resampling to 44.1KHz or to 48KHz. As the target is close in both cases, the aproximation is not very good, particularly if the resampler is optimized for performance and low latency rather than quality. Setting a higher target (96 is exactly twice 48KHz, more than twice 44.1) makes the fastests and shittiest resamplers behave decently.

If you're not a sheep and actually want to try different sets to find what suits your personal taste, then yes, there is a reason. It's never a BAD choice, but I'm fairly certain that a fair majority of the people who just buy it on recommendation could find something they personally like better, without EQ. Ya'll got a cult of personality around here as bad, if not worse, than Reddit or Zeos fanboys. Fair recommendations are okay, but they are not the be-all, end-all.
>>
>>61874319
mouthbreathers are more likely to buy the cheaper mainstream series of can (500) and therefore the build quality needs to be better

>>
>>61874319
Because the 500 series is build for gorillas and the 600 for audio enthusiast that know how to treat headphones.
>>
>>61874245 >>61874297
This is similar to graphics. Upcaling an old videogame that's, say, 1024x768, to 1080p, will look weird, especially so if there's pixel art. Some "pixels" will be bigger than others, or a blurry headache inducing mess.
Same videogame, same 1024x768, but upscaled to 4K, does actually look good. Be it using nearest aproximation or something more sophisticated (and intrinsically blurry), it will still look better when the target is 4K than with a 1080p target.
Using a 96KHz sample rate target is the same idea, but with audio.

THD measurements are not a reliable indicator of audibility:
http://gedlee.azurewebsites.net/Papers/Distortion_AES_I.pdf
http://gedlee.azurewebsites.net/Papers/Distortion_AES_II.pdf
> In our next paper we will show that .01% THD of one type of nonlinear system can be perceived as unacceptable while 10% THD in another example is perceived as inaudible. Even one of these simple examples is sufficient to invalidate THD as a viable metric for discussion of the perception of distortion. Furthermore, 1% THD is not at all the same as 1% IM, but we will show that neither correlates with subjective perception.
>These results supported the skepticism that THD and IMD metrics were poor predictor of subjective perception of sound quality ratings.

There's ways (ASIO (3rd party API been around for a long time), WASAPI (windows API, newish)) to get bit-exact output with (if lucky) knowledge and maybe control over latency.
The issue is that the soundcard becomes a resource exclusive to the program that's using these APIs. Definitely not worth it, when simply setting the shared target to 96KHz is overkill for preventing potentially audible resampler artifactry.

If 24 bit audio is the highest you can set it to, 24 bit, 48 kHz is probably your optimal setting. Most music is 44.1 kHz and most anime/movies are 48 kHz. Use Resampler-V in Foobar to upsample 44.1 kHz audio to 48 kHz and listen to anime/movies in their native 48 kHz. You can avoid Windows resampling almost entirely this way, except for when playing back audio encoded above 48 kHz. I would honestly recommend converting said audio to 44.1 or 48 kHz to save storage space as there are no audible benefits to audio above 44.1 kHz.
There's no reason not to use 24 bit or even 32 bit if you can since Windows automatically upsamples all audio to 32 bit floating point at some point in the audio chain.

They could have used a recursive filter if performance was so critical. You lose phase accuracy with the benefit of a steep stopband and zero inherent latency.

Upgraded my Focusrite Saffire interface with a Magni 2. Even my Philips X2s (30 ohm) sound nicer out of the Magni than the Saffire's headphone jack. Mids and highs are clearer. Maybe it's due to the difference in output impedance of the amps since the Saffire is 7 ohm. Maybe it's confirmation bias.

I'm torn between the MEE audio M6 PRO and the Shure SE215.

I know about the KZ ZS5 but I'm willing to pay more if it's available on Amazon Prime so I can get it the next day instead of a month. I've also heard recommendations on things like the GR07 and the MK5 but there are some issues. GR07 is not available on Amazon, and I don't want an ear dildo MK5 because that will make it harder to use earmuffs on top when I need to for extreme noise isolation.

I would honestly be willing to spenhd more and get the SE535 if I could be certain it was worth it, but you can't demo IEMs in store or whatever unfortunately. All I have to go for is that it better have detachable cables, and that it has a good build so I can stop buying disposable earphones everytime that keep breaking.

Let me guess, every graph that shows the weak bass of Sennheisers open cans is poorly sealed?

That's fine.
>good around good quality
Maybe. Or maybe not. But the question is, how does it stack against non-headset headphones of the same price?
Generally, headsets are very low value for the money, which is why we recommend getting modmics and such instead. See the OP links for details.

>12 dB ear-raping treble spike of death
Must be a Beyerdynamic.
>>
>>61884899
Not anon, but DT990s, to be exact. Only ear rapey when not run properly. But they are bright
>>
>>61884223
That's because the best open headphones under $100 are HD558, the best open headphones between $100 and $200 are HD579 and the best open headphones between $200 and $300 are HD600, and in none of these cases is it even really very close. Thus, it's only natural that Sennheisers will be recommended often here.
The Sennheiser recommendations are simply people making good recommendations and the anti-Sennheiser hate is just 4chan being autstically contrarian like 4chan tends to do to anything that gets too popular.
>>
>>61884924
>Only ear rapey when not run properly.
Describe the electrical mechanics behind one transparent amp producing less treble response through a DT990 than a different transparent amp. Protip: you can't, because these mechanics don't exist. Confirmation bias is a hell of a drug.
>>
Look at what hifiman owners are doing to fix the treble spikes, sad!
>>
>>61884314
DiPolar, nobody has posted studies demonstrating a correlation between THD measurements and audibility of distortion. Saying "nuh uh, you're wrong, lots of other studies say so" without posting said other studies and quoting relevant excerpts from said studies is not convincing rhetoric. You have been shown several peer-reviewed studies with relevant excerpts quoted demonstrating that THD measurements are not a reliable indicator of distortion audibility and you have not effectively rhetorically countered this.

These are too bright sounding. The earpads are itchy and glued to the headphones.
Thus worse than HD558, but they're often recommended by Sennhaters just because.

That was a gish gallop. He made no attempt to quote relevant excerpts from the studies because he didn't read the studies himself. That was not effective rhetoric, it was logically fallacious rhetoric.

I'm the anon that originally said that and I stand by it. Listening to a song back to back, once on the 1.2v dragonfly black and once on the 7v fx audio dac x6 and they sound horrible on the dragonfly with screechy scratchy sibilant treble and just nice and bright on the fx audio.
Best part is the dac x6 is cheaper than the dragonfly.
Nice cheap amps for 250ohm beyers:

At no point did he quote relevant excerpts from the studies demonstrating a consistent correlation between THD measurements and perceived audibility of distortion. The central point he was attempting to refute is that THD measurements are not a reliable indicator of audibility and he made absolutely zero attempt to refute this central point. He just spammed a bunch of links tangentially related to THD without even reading them and comically claimed "there this debunks you," because he is a shitposter and this is the kind of thing shitposters do.
"This study uses THD measurements therefore THD measurements must be reliable indicators of audibility" is clearly a logical fallacy and not effective rhetoric.
I invite anyone to provide a study and quote relevant exerpt(s) from it which refute the central point of >>61874508
Nobody has done so yet.

That's personal preference. The HD 558s have bloaty bass that muddies up the mids. I can hear more with the SHP9500S than with the HD 558

>>61885132
Either your dragonfly is faulty or that's confirmation bias in action. Those are both transparent amps and there are no electrical mechanics which would cause the dragonfly to produce more treble through the DT990 than the DAC X6.

No. Neither is less. Read the paper FFS. It explicitly attacks the idea of there being a correlation.

Less is better though. Distortion is bad because well *drumroll*

It's DISTORTION. The lower the harmonic distortion the more faithfully it reproduces the source. The paper attacks it, shows no conclusive evidence, and then sniffs its own farts by saying there is no correlation.

Meanwhile, every other study says otherwise and you will continue to be a complete fucking idiot.

The fringe position would be to suggest THD has a 1:1 relation to sound quality.
The goal of the paper is to suggest a simple weighting metric.
