Why ThinkPad?
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model, spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard), great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support

Just bought a T440p/i5 4210M/GT 730m for 280 eurobucks, and a 1080 IPS screen for other 50 euroshills.

Now the ebayer said that it was in rough conditions, I just hope it's not fucking destroyed, the insertion was the lowest I could find for a T440p with a dGPU for my discrete gaming necessities.

I've contacted some chinks on Alibaba to see if I can get my hands on a cheap i7 4800MQ, as on the normal market I can only find them for over 150€ and that's way over my budget.

The battery the T440p comes with is a 6cell, probably degradated, what should I upgrade it with?

I'm with that processor right now, here's my setup >>62844806 and despite the "47W" label this thing hovers around 57W when turbo boosting all cores at 3.5GHz.

The good thing is that it sustains 3.5GHz on all cores on Prime95 without throttling at 75-85c so it's pretty good for me. This is with the iGPU heatsink and HD4600 only.

That's because most processors' rated TDP is an average, and nearly all of them will go +10W when actually boosted or overclocked.

35W goes to 45W
45W goes to 55W
55W gives you third degree burns, or forces you to cash out your insurance policy.

The speed up is proportional to the wattage generally.

Things like media buttons are standardized, you just need to set them up in your DE to send the appropriate signals to programs.
Fingerprint reader is fprintd and libpam-fprintd, then register your fingerprint with fprintd-enroll (or fprint-enroll, i forgot).
Not sure what you mean by battery drivers, that should work out of the box, at least it does for me in Debian on my T420. If you want better battery life you should install tlp, but you might have to disable/tweak the wi-fi power management. At least for me that didn't work well OOB.
You shouldn't need anything else for it, its best features are in the hardware.

Well, I guess I could just deactivate the dGPU if it gets that hot, though I think on Linux the whole Optimus switcheroo-on-the-run doesn't really work?

Anyway, that's supposing I can get the i7, one chink has it as used and he could sell it for 35$ - he does wholesales though, have to get lucky I guess - but still it kinda stinks, it's probably like half burnt.
Still worth a try, otherwise I'll stay with the i5 until I have enough money to get the i7.

Where can I obtain plastic case with same texture as ThinkPad cases?

I want to make a small hobby electronics project and encase it in a ThinkPad-like matte black plastic box.

>What would be the point?
Spend the bare minimum while being capable of maxing SATA2 (x60) sequential read speed.

>I bought a 250gb Samsung Evo for $93 from Newegg.
I wouldn't want to spend $90 + another ~$90 in shipping + import fees (not burger) instead of just getting a cheap chink sdd for $15 that'll do the job and maybe die in a year while having no valuable data in it.

considering buying a T460s from a pawn shop - in excellent condition but it has some Macafee disk encryption crap on it that has it locked up, saying "it's been over 90 days since last update, please give your sys admin this code, and he will give you a new code to allow access" - can I just go into the BIOS and do a system restore? I checked the BIOS and there is no password set or administrator lock - just the Macafee crap. Don't want to waste $400 if I can't get rid of the Macafee software and just do a system restore.

Compared to modern machines there are quite a few things it does better as well, like having the 9 cell battery sticking out like a handle, which is surprisingly nice when you're squatting in a cramped server room or walking around. durability is amazing, i can drop it, throw it, carry it around in heavy rain without a sleeve or bag. the thinklight lets me not only see the keyboard but also work with papers, or any other thing you're doing, when in a dark environment.
it goes into a docking station by just putting it in there, no plugs or cables to fiddle with.
you can plug in power and usb on the back so it has no problem fitting on a messy desk.
I could go on, I'm extremely happy with this machine and now that it's getting old and i start to realize it's inevitably going to be too old at some point, i have no idea where i would get an equally good product. not to mention the massive failure that is the thinkpad 25, basically confirming that lenovo has no idea what professionals need.
no money can buy you a better machine

to be honest, I didn't really mess with an X200/201 much, so I don't have any first hand experience.

From what I know, you need to get a WXGA+ model (lenovo logo on the left of the display). I think people preferred the 's' model because they were able to upgrade to AFFS panels.

I havent seen a t420 panel but from the reading Ive done, I think the 1440x900 X200 panel may be a little better.

I watch a lot of youtube videos on my x200, and I dont notice the panel being that bad. Like sure I have to adjust it just right to get the proper viewing angle. If you primarily watched videos, sure maybe go for the 1280x800 IPS or whatever it is. But i occasionally use GIMP, do lots of terminal work, do lots of web browsing, and do lots of document writing and reading, and I wouldnt want lesser resolution than 1440x900 for any of that.

90PPI has been the standard for years. Actually something around 96. It's what most DEs are optimized for. As long as developers don't get their shit together, the advantages of high resolutions aren't worth it.
Saying "I've never had a problem with scaling so you're a retard" is the same as saying "My Mac has never crashed so people who claim theirs did are liars."

Lol youre beyond fucking dumb. With more resolution, I can fit more of a website on my screen. I can fit more of an image on my screen. I even do some PCB design on my x200 and guess what, more resolution helps out tremendously here. I get more screen real estate using gimp, reading pdfs, whatever the fuck.

God youre fucking stupid

No further tests DONE after checking bios*
>>
>>62883856
If there's RAM in it, it'll probably work just fine after adding a HDD or SSD.

There is a chance that something may not be working correctly, since the seller only guarantees that it boots up to the BIOS. So do keep that in mind.

If it's significantly cheaper than a machine that's noted as working, you could give it a try.

So why are there quite a few people saying T430 > T420?
Arent they pretty much the same? They take the same cpus even. But one has a shitty keyboard.
>>
Which USB 3.0 Expresscard is best for my X220T?

I've seen single, double and triple USB 3.0, but i'll probably stick to the first two to get more speed. I've found ones by CSL and SODIAL on Amazon that seem decent but I assume some of you will have first hand experience

Please respond

>>62884026
Because they have buyer's remorse.
You can even install Coreboot and use an Ivy Bridge processor in the T420.
There's no reason you could want a T430.
>>
Is the t430 good? There is one refurbished for 300 euros pn amazon i could use a new one for uni but it says battery only lasts 2 hours
>>
>>62884026
Better igpu, better chipset
Never do this >>62884140
The QM67 doesn't handle ivy bridge very well
>>
>>62884150
Go for eBay maybe?
>>
>>62877669
I have one and I would say the keyboard is not very good. I've had dell and hp laptops (and a couple of more recent thinkpads) and this is my least favourite so far

I like the laptop generally though. It's quite fast with 8GB and an ssd, and quite portable
>>
>>62884187
So are you saying i shouldn't get the t430?
>>
>>62880360
post pape pls

Specs? Doesn't sound too much of a bargain.
>>
>>62879789
I guess it's down to preference!

>>62879807
Just a X201 head. X200 mobo doesn't fit in a X201 body, they're slightly different. I know first hand...

>>62876302
Someone already posted the 1920x1080, I don't hand any created for other 16x9 sizes. Sorry I didn't get to your post first!
>>
>>62884215
No no you should but 300 euros for a T430 and half asked battery seems a bit much

Then you might wanna look at a T420 too then
It has a better keyboard and is cheaper
But the T430 is more powerful and can take a T420 keyboard if you can mod a few things
>>
>>62884297
T430 is a great choice, you just need to make sure you're getting the 1600 screen, otherwise its a real shit show

So for some reason I cannot get a 128GB SanDisk microSDHC inside an adapter to work with my T420 card reader. The SD card shows up, and it appears I can write files to it, but when I unplug and replug, the files are gone. I cannot format the SD card or delete the volume.

The SD card has been tested in another computer, and my T420 has been tested with an 8GB SD, both of which work.

So uh, help me out guys?
>>
>>62884349
128GB SanDisk microSDXC, sorry
