If you want help:
>State the budget & CURRENCY for your build
>List your uses, e.g. Gaming, Video Editing, VM Work
>For monitors, include purpose (e.g., photoediting, gaming) and graphics card pairing (if applicable)

CPUs:
>NO i5 7500/7600K or i7 7700/K. THEY ARE DEFUNCT AND SUPERSEDED BY COFFEE LAKE
>G4560/G4600 for non-gaming (light tasks) or bare minimum gaming builds with a dedicated graphics card
>R3 1200 - Budget builds (best with OC + fast RAM)
>R5 1600 / i5 8400 - Great gaming or multithreaded use CPUs
>R7 / Used Xeon / Threadripper / i7 - Heavy Multi-Tasking / VM Work / Mixed use

RAM:
>Current CPUs benefit from high speed RAM; 3000-3200 MHz is ideal
>Before buying RAM for Ryzen, check your Mobo's QVL or look for user reports

GPUs:
>Crypto-Currency miners have driven GPU prices up (particularly Radeon)
1080p
>GTX 1050Ti and 3GB 1060 are the only reasonably priced cards; 6GB 1060 or 4GB 580 if you want to overpay a little
>GTX 1070 if you're looking for very high (100+) framerates and you have a CPU and monitor to match
1440p
>GTX 1070/Ti and 1080 are standard choices; currently overpriced
>GTX 1080Ti if you're looking for very high (100+) framerates and you have a CPU and monitor to match
2160p (4K)
>GTX 1080Ti

General:
>PLAN YOUR BUILD AROUND YOUR MONITOR IF GAMING
>A 240GB or larger SSD is almost mandatory; consider m.2 form factor

Would anyone be willing to offer me some feedback on this build?
https://pcpartpicker.com/user/rodco/saved/Q4xbjX
It's going to be a gayman pc. It's almost the same as the most popular guide build on pcpartpicker (modest gaming) with the following changes:

1x8gb memory to leave room for eventual upgrade
Bronze 80+ efficiency instead of gold, based on discussion I saw on the build suggesting that the lower efficiency wouldn't make a significant difference
Switched out the SSD for a higher storage capacity and cheaper HD (any thoughts on Seagate as a brand?)
Switched cases to make room for an optical drive, as I am a relative luddite

Now, I am a bit retarded at tech and this would be my first build, so were any of those changes stupid?
Additionally, I have a set of those wall plugs you can ethernet into your router and and pc through the wall to avoid wireless, do I need a wired network adapter as well to use that?
Lastly, the computer as it is is around 800, ideally I don't want to go significantly higher, and I plan on waiting until black friday to see if anything gets cheaper.

Thanks in advance.

>>
>>63360671
That RAM seems oddly overpriced, even accounting for recent trends in memory costs/availability. I got a 2x8GB kit for $125 or something only some months back, towards the middle of the year. I'm sure you can get a good kit on Newegg or a local retailer when BF/CM come by after Thanksgiving. Either way, a 1x8 is a minimum these days, 2x8 is pretty good.

Seagate used to be complete dogshit (Not to be confused with Seasonic, a great brand). Supposedly, they are somewhat better now, but they're still low-tier. Get a 125GB SSD at minimum for your OS/desktop, then get a 1tb HDD for further storage of music, videos, etc.

Get a decent gold PSU with some wattage above min requirements for your rig if possible. You can use it in the future that way. I got a USED 750w gold PSU in my first build 4, almost 5 years ago, and it's stood with me through two upgrades and one rebuild.

If you absolutely need access to disk content, there are USB external disc readers/writers you can use instead of spending money on a new case and reader. You can buy a top-tier case used from Craigslist or something if you want to as well.

Everything else is mostly fine.

> do I need a wired network adapter

I'll stick with a gold PSU, then. If I'm planning for a good upgrade path I suppose it doesn't make sense to cut corners on the power supply anyways. Thanks. I'll also look for a better hdd for storage, probably sandisk, samsung, or Toshiba (I've seen a few good comments about Toshiba on /g/). I like the dc2 because its fairly small but and is also about $70 cheaper than the strix, and the msi one seems alright but i hear coil whine is an issue with a lot of the msi cards. Ideally silence and tdp are the concern to me which is why i was suprised to see the strix oc has the same tdp.

Hi guys.

I'm interested in a new case and I'm not sure what to get. I'm thinking a full size tower or a box/cube shaped one, but I dont exactly know the pros/cons of the cube cases.

Currently I have an Antec 902v3 and I really like it, and if possible I'd like something similar to that. Main interests:
-Minimal rice (few LEDs or can be disabled, nothing too flashy/bright).
-Lots of airflow with quiet fans (adjustable).
-A 'tray' on top so I can use it as a shelf.
-Matte black or obsidian in color.
-Around $100 but flexible.

Just to make sure we're on the same page, this is what I meant by a cube case. It appears to be just like a mid size case but extra wide, allowing for more airflow and not having to have the mobo stacked on top/bottom of the power supply
>>
>>63363484
Depends on price, if the 500FPS Intel was 500x the price of the AMD, I definitely would not get the Intel. The monitor and graphics card I was using in this hypothetical situation would also have a huge impact on the decision. I'd also have to think about the direction of game engines, i.e., will I actually need extra power within 5 years? Answer for CPU requirements in games is basically no. If you can run AC:O at 60FPS you're good for the foreseeable future.

>>63365438
>The list of recommendations are not made for people who already own a CPU
Average persons have them and therefore they bought them somewhere and somehow, and so can you, you helpless little anon.

>>63369318
From that video, the 8700K only does better in CSGO. GTAV is a win for an OC'd R7 1700 and PUBG is a tie.

>>63369444
I don't see why you need a full size unless you have a huge number of 3.5" devices like optical disc burners
>>
>>63369567
Basically I have 2 SSDs, 1 HDD and 1 DVD drive. I could live with less, but I would like to have a mobo that could support as much.

As for PCIE, I have a sound card, a network card and a super wide GPU. I could probably get by with an itx, but I dont want to be pushing the limit with basic components like this. Like if I decided to get a capture card or a PCI card with exta USB ports on it, I would like that option.

Besides, full size cases have better airflow, which means it runs cooler and quieter. I dont live in a tiny ass house or anything so I have no reason to skimp from atx -> itx

cont.

To put things in perspective, I have giant everything in my house, so may as well get a large size case too.

On that note, I'd like to specify my case interests to an ATX cube case. I suppose I dont need anyone to recommend me one, but if someone did have some recommendations or some pointers on catchfalls to avoid, I'd gladly listen.

For reference this case is for my next PC, its not going to replace my current case.

I think theres a separate bay behind where the mobo is that houses the PSU and your front-facing drives. That bay also allows for easy cable management, so I think I'm interested in this. The top looks kinda plain though, and I wish the front panel ports were on the top corner

was userbenchmark off by so much? it said 8700k was 40 cheaper than 1800x
PCPartPicker shows them at the same price though

>Like I said, tie. 10% in one title is nothing.
so then why did you say 1800x beat 8700k in GTAV when 8700k gets ~30% more on average, the same minimum and 20% less in max (which is probably a broken statistic because the average was higher)
So even if we consider GTA V & PUBG a tie (which they aren't), that still means this shows 2 ties and a win for the 8700k

>b-but muh overclock
so overclock 8700k as well? according to userbenchmark, it gets even further ahead in single & quad when overclocked and catches up from -10% to -6% in multithread

I dont really think what I wrote was complicated, but just to reiterate, ever since the 3xxx series (for example, i7 3770k), each successive generation isnt measurably faster than the previous generation. So the 4770k isnt noticeably faster than the 3770k, the 5770k isnt noticeably faster than the 4770k, etc. And with the 8770k, the individual cores arent faster, but it has more cores so its more capable.

>4.2 ghz vs 3.5ghz

Accounting for the 20% higher clock speed, its only ~12.5% faster over 5 generations. Thats what I'm talking about. Each new generation is like 2-3% faster on average, which is hardly measurable.

I'm not saying the 3xxx series is just as good as the 7xxx series, but that every new generation is marginally better than the next, like intel is stagnating or they've reached peak per-core performance
