If you're looking for purchase advice, state your budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).

Are ExpressCard to USB 3.0 adapters compatible with i5 x220?
>>
Just picked up an x1c 3rd Gen in pristine condition, i5 5300U vPro, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 1440p display, for £200. Thought it would be 1080p TN but nah it's IPS. I'm aware it's not the most loved ThinkPad, I also have a t440p, did I do good /g/?
>>
What are some good choices for a bidness laptop at the ~$500 range? Thinkpads, Elitebooks, and Latitudes are all okay. I'd prefer 1080p screen, quad-core i7 CPU, 8GB of RAM, 250GB SSD, and decent battery life but I feel like I'm possibly asking for a bit much at that price range. 14" or 15" screen preferred.

I recently got a x230, and it has been a comfy laptop so far, but there is a high pitched low volume static noise coming out of the speakers, and hitting the volume buttons doesn't affect it at all it but hitting the dedicated mute button gets rid of it. I'm looking to buy new/used 9 cell battery for my x220.

Found a new one for 90$, and few used one ranging from 60$ to 35$. Owner claims that the cheapest one holds for 2h and 50 min and most expensive one for 3h 40min while watching movie with WiFi on.

However they have varying state of discharge. Both the cheapest and most expensive ones are around 72Wh out of 94Wh. There is one in between for 50$ which holds for 3h, but it's at 88/94 Wh.

Should I look at stated up times or charge rate?

>>
>>64680484
If it were reasonably easy to remove the screw and broken pins the seller would have done it.

I suggest holding out for a T420 with a broken display or other basically external damage that tested good on an external display.

Everyone who sells system boards wants too much money because they harvested the board. I buy bases and organ donors instead when I need a system board.

Don't forget to download the HMM if you haven't already. It has wonderful things like screw length specs.

If you don't have a screw stash, new screw kits are cheap on Ebay and come with red locking compound applied. They are so cheap there's no reason to ever reuse a questionable screw, and if you exact model isn't listed I'd just buy any kit since screw sizes are basically standard.

Example:

>>64680798
Dropping a notebook on ceramic is pretty severe depending on where it hit. I'd expect substantial damage on most machines.

Determine your priorities. Is the purchase a toy or must it be high performance to make you money? Many padders like used machines because if one gets destroyed or damaged they aren't out much cash and even the wreckage is usable for parts. You found out why lots of us have capable desktops and expendable notebooks.

If you want a trackpoint I know of no machines which are fully rugged. There are plenty of rugged notebooks but rugged (Toughbook fully rugged, Getac, Itronix) means sacrificing autismal delicacies like high quality keyboards and trackpoints.
Rugged notebooks aren't light but they do the job.

If you are accident prone I suggest buying something with the specs you want and not drinking around it (which is never smart so I never do it) and if you really want to protect it during transport get a foam lined plastic case instead of a bag. Pelican make some nice cases. I use one on the road.

If you need a new fast, machine for work consider accidental damage coverage.

Tell me, tpg, how shit are the standard screens on the x201/220 and T410/T420? I've been looking into getting a cheapo (<200 euro) laptop for doing office work and watching weeb cartoons when I'm on the train or otherwise not at home. Now the only thing keeping me back from buying a secondhand business laptop on ebay is the shit prices in the EU compared to the US, and that I've read that the screens are absolutely terrible.

The shit prices I can solve by just keeping on eye on listing and trying to snipe one by bidding. The screens I just don't know, there's nowhere I can go check one out in person either. I've seen a latitude e6420 in person before, but I don't know if the screens compare at all.

Try one of the dualtouch ones and see if it works.

>>64683275
They aren't that bad since you'll be watching them mainly straight from the front. But you'd do better to check out IPS models, x230/t430. If you can handle the slightly increased size, all x230t have an IPS.

X230t are pretty pricey over here it seems. Certainly compared to x230/T430's. Do you mean that all/some of the x230/t430's have IPS screens, or just that they can take one?

Unoptimized Win10 gives it better battery life over unoptimized Win7. Win7 is better only if you throughly mess around with it (in regards to the battery) at least. You could go for a minimalistic linux distro too.

TB3 is backwards compatible, you need an adapter from Type C to TB2/1. Also, you need to make sure that the displays you plug in don't exceed the capacity of the connection, otherwise, you'll be lowering display resolution.

Would the Whitelisted bios have a problem with the removal of the wifi card on my X220? I did a thermal paste change and my wifi card is not being detected at all in Windows 7 after being reassembled. I even bought a N 6300 card which is supported and still no luck. My second guess is that the black or grey antenna wires got fucked during the disassembly and needs to be replaced.

>>
>>64691050
*40's abandoned IBM's design language and became less modular than their predecessors. For example: X240 has only one ram slot and a soldered 4gb module, 12gb max. Ultrabay drives and batteries were discontinued too. But, 1080p displays are easier to install (plug & play in some cases).
Also, from Haswell onwards (arguably until 8th gen core processors), Intel decided to sacrifice performance gains over energy efficiency, so the difference between generations became minimal in terms of performance.

I see. But since I'm mainly going to use it for a shitposting device I feel like losing a bit of modularity for better energy efficiency and the option for a better screen down the line might be worth it. Still can't really decide between an X or T series, and wether to stick to *30 or *40. Mostly I'm concerned about how hot both series run. I've also heard something about them no longer taking aftermarket batteries, which could be trouble.

Also, do you guys just browse ebay until you find a listing you can snipe for cheap, or do you get them somewhere else? I'm almost considering either google translating and searching for some polish/bulgarian/other eastern european country that maybe has them cheaper than over here. Or maybe send one of these Ebay sellers a message if they wouldn't consider sending me one without an HDD or software for a discount, since I've got a spare SSD at home anyway and I'm planning on installing some linux distro or another anyway.

Generally it's eBay, Craigslist, or local sites depending on the country you live on.

>*30's don't take chink batteries, unless you flash the EC chip on the motherboard.

Only *30's, or *40's too? Also, how hard is it to flash the EC chip if it comes down to it? I'm not really tech literate, though I can follow a guide. The most I've ever done was put cfw on a few consoles and put my desktop together, but that's honestly the difficulty level of legos.

Craigslist doesn't exist here, and our local variant just has people asking 1.5-2x the ebay price, or other retarded shit like asking 750 euro for a macbook with a shattered screen and dead battery.

>>64693938
That seems easy enough. I guess I won't worry about the whole battery thing too much then. Now I guess I just have to decide between the T and X series.
>>
I recently spilt water over my T430 keyboard and touchpad. Touchpad randomly stops working. Even when working, mouse is slowly moving upwards and right click isn’t working at all. Any ideas?
>>
>>64694158
The ULV processors (end with U, ex. i5-4300U) have a TDP of 15 watts vs the older (end with M, ex. i5-3320M) ones with a TDP of 35 watts. The ULv ones were made to operate with lower power consumption and less heat production so laptops could be thinner.
>>
>>64694158
Basically because 'muh low voltage, a *30 with a 35W i5-3320M will beat a *40 with the 15W i7, and is on par with a *50 with a 15W i7

You get better battery life but performance dies, and despite the better GPU the TDP limit cripples the chip under full load

My T60P runs like shit on battery.

I understand that the battery life itself should be terrible as part of the design, but I don't understand why the minute I pull the plug it throttles down to the minimum even in "high performance" mode, and the screen always gets dimmer in spite of always being at "maximum" brightness
>>
>>64691512
You can use DDR3 without any problems.
> The L means that they run at lower voltage.
>>
>>64694233>>64694270
Oh, I see. Interesting, how much better battery life are we talking here? I'm perfectly willing to sacrifice some performance, since it's basically going to be a shitposting machine. On the other hand I'm never really away from an outlet for more than 3-4 hours or so, so I guess it doesn't really matter that much.
>>
>>64694158

Performance diff compared to X230 with i7 or low i5 models
X240 -10%
X250 equal
X260 +10%
X270 +20%

>>64694501
Back in the day they didn't trust the OS to do power management so the EC just turns everything off when running on battery.
>>
>>64694400
why 7 over xp?
>>
>>64694580
>X240 -10%

I don't know a lot about this kind of thing, but that doesn't sound like a lot, especially if I'm not going to be using it for intense stuff.
>>
>>64694567
If you run it down completely, an X240 with the extended 6 cell will net you about 20-odd hours best case, an X230 with the 9 cell and a battery slice would run you about half an hour to an hour more, again best case

But the X240 does have an internal battery, so if the 6 cell ran flat, you can swap it for a fresh one without having to shut down which is nice if portability is really your thing.
>>
>>64694580
>Back in the day they didn't trust the OS to do power management so the EC just turns everything off when running on battery.
So is there anything I can do to change this? In my use case half an hour at full power would be all I needed and more useful to me than two hours chugging along

T440s, 5-6? Hours on 3+3 cell, 9-10 on 3+6 cell.

Zbook Studio G3, 5-7 hours on the 64wh, dGPU disabled because it's crappy and screws with my eGPU.

Yes, you can check CL and others too, but ensure the BIOS is not locked.
>>

Yeah, I'm trying to avoid this. If they don't say should I assume its locked? Also, how much damage should I expect to the exterior? I don't know if I'm being too picky.

Hello gentoomen, I have a T420. The SANYO 42T4799 battery from 2011 that it has lasts me about ~3 hours nowadays. Was designed to originally hold ~93240 mWh according to tlp stat.

What's the realistic maximum lifetime I could expect from buying it a new battery nowadays?

And how do you decide whether it's in good enough condition or not to keep investing in it? (ie with an SSD for example)

Just ask the seller. If they're too stupid to show or won't let you see/check the BIOS, it's probably Jamal trying to sell the ThinkPad he stole from a school or coffee shop.

Not the anon, but there's still Unofficial Service Pack 4. Or you could go with Vista and install Server 2008 updates (supported until 2020 like 7, but without telemetry updates).

What's the most durable/long-lasting model?
>>
>>64675490
I have two x200 (no s model) and for such undemanding work it will be fine. I bought both with no hard disk (old spinners = severe bottleneck) off Ebay, installed new SSDs and Anker batteries, and life is good. I flashed no-whitelist BIOs but haven't needed that yet. I don't worry about ME because it's not a real-world issue.
>>
>want to buy thinkpad
>no models available
I wish I lived in the US
>>
>>64697777
Yup. X200 is 10 years old and was the last semi proper model, mostly because it took Lenovo time to fuck it up properly and turn it into gook trash itoy copy from the formula IBM had for the brand
>>
What thinkpad would be best for a college student? I'm going for programming so I don't need anything too crazy, just want something durable and easy to transport. However I might use it for a bit of gaming as well because my main rig is too big and clunky so I'm not going to bring it with me.

Is the p51 the best thinkpad for that? Or should I give up on the thinkpad and look at other laptops?

Also what's the advantage of using the docking station?
>>
>>64697974
I don't get this. Do you not have a good used market? Market seems to be flooded with cheap enterprise models like the Shitpad
>>
>>64697830
X200, T60 and older
Every new model is chinese trash that was designed for a 3 yr enterprise life (which is still relatively good compared to a lot of consumer alternatives)

I've got an X61T running win 10. It runs, though really not as smooth as I'd like, has an SSD and I think I cranked the ram to max as well. Don't really remember the specs, overhauled it in the summer. Any ideas for a different OS? I mostly use it for browsing and some trading and sketching.
>>
>>64698236
I see. I just know I would be disappointed if I paid MSRP based on the current state of the Shitpad. Good luck
>>
>>64698234
that's an interesting response.
I was expecting something bigger than a portable model.
>>
>>64698221

Is X201 not chinkshit?
>>
>>64698259
that would be the x210 that they've released
>>
>>64698256
it's personal bias that suggests the portable model. I suppose the T60 isn't really portable though since it's technically a T series.
>>
>>64698271

So why does everyone endorse X200 rather than the X201s?
>>
>>64698259
the qualified fucking historians on this board will argue that the slide towards chinkshit started at the X220 and took a dive during the X240
>>
>>64698284
the X201s uses the shit processor hence 's'
the X201 is the best of the X20* line and actually more rare due to initial higher MSRP
the X200 is kind of the middle line
>>
I'm fairly new to Linux, fairly new to this board, and I just bought a T430. It currently has Windows 10 Pro on it. I'm not sure which Linux distro I should put on it but I want to dual boot with windows. I was thinking Arch or Gentoo but they both seem like a lot of research I have to do. I have also entertained the idea of Qubes OS, Manjaro, Sulos looks pretty, but I'm not sure which one would be the best. I also dislike Ubuntu.

There is literally nothing wrong with the X220.
>>
>>64698651
X220 was when cheaper materials started being used relative to earlier versions. It was the start of the slide towards chinkshit, although a much less noticeable one. Not saying the X220 was chinkshit, but it was the beginning of the downtrend in quality which was much more perceivable in immediate predecessors like the X230 and X240
