If you're looking for purchase advice, state your budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad T, X, and W/P Series if you want the Real Business Experience™

Recommended freedom models:
>>T60, X60; X200, T400/500
Recommended modern models:
>>X220/X230 - 12", 768p, cheap and light

Is updating the thermal paste on an x220 cpu worth it or is it just a meme?
>>
>>64698727

one thermal paste application lasts fine unless you have shit thermal design and incompetent assembly

Then what’s the best way to keep the x220 cool? Mine is overheating and I’ve alreasy cleaned the area and inspected the fan. A cooling pad?
>>
>>64698787
in the case that it's overheating then I would go for a thermal reapply since that's really the last thing on your list before you accept it for being an overheating piece of shit. There is always the chance that someone screwed with the application or it degraded quickly.
You really shouldn't need a cooling pad for an ultraportable.

Most demanding tgi ga are gonna be MHW and FFXV Windows edition, besides that nothing that hard to run, Dark Souls, Overwatch, Maybe MGSV/Survive. Maybe even want to emulate some stuff like xenoblade.
>>
>>64698891
P51 should be able to run all those games, don't know what quality.
Since gaming is not the primary purpose, unless you really want all the newer stuff you could make do with older W or T models.

How come xx30 series can hold up so well even after 6 years?
>>
>>64699068
Because Intel CPUs haven't gained more than 15 to 20% IPC in the past 7-8 years. Most of the performance gain has been due to clocks past Haswell. And, also, power improvements.

When buying a replacement charger, you just have to make sure the tip, volts and amps (watts) match the one you're replacing amirite? Different model numbers should not matter.
>>
>>64699377

new 8th gen core i5u and i7u are quad cores, meaning i5-7440HQ and i7-7700HQ performance in a 15W package

Who gives a shit? The main point of having a thinkpad is the trackpoint so you dont have to use a god awful trackpad (which all trackpads are).

No, display upgrade requires no other upgrades.
>>
>>64699534
Big issue is thermals, we haven't yet good reviews, so we'll see how good or horrible the thermals are. If it's real bad, it's not much different from a high clocked dual core previous gen ThinkPad.
>>
>>64699604
If they're fitting these 8th gen cpus in tablets with just a moderate amount of throttling, im sure the much beefier cooler in the series line will handle just fine at cooling these new cpus. Especially when T470p come with quad-core and use very similar coolers to the non-performance line T470.

fprint, anons. Install it.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/fprint

If you want to use your FR on e.g. "sudo cat killme.conf", then add
auth sufficient pam_fprintd.so
to /etc/pam.d/sudo as well.

If you just want it to occur on user login, then add that line only to /etc/pam.d/system-local-login.

If you want to scan all your fingers for the CIA, then do
for finger in {left,right}-{thumb,{index,middle,ring,little}-finger}; do fprintd-enroll -f "$finger" $USER; done
. That's a slight edit of what you see in the wiki page and actually werks.

X230 is just X220 with upgraded internals and the new keyboard though.

The new keyboard is also higher quality for typing than X201-X220 models I've had even though the layout isn't as good. I've only used ISO models so there might be quality differences compared to ANSI models. X61s is the newest model I've had that had the real GOD TIER keyboard.

Personally I think X-series peaked at X41 in terms of quality and after that it has slowly declined hitting the low point at X240 and then recovering a bit. Waiting for the X270 to get sub €300 until I upgrade.

Does the X series get significantly hotter than the T series?

I love my T400 but when I whop it up out for presentations and in meetings you can visibly hear my colleagues rolling their eyes and I'm pretty sure one of these days someone is going to mention how badly it reflects on the company or some shit, so I need something that's a bit more modern, shiney, and just all around doesn't look like I pulled it out of the garbage two decades ago.
Does anyone have some recommendations for solid business laptops?
HDMI out and a solid CPU are absolutely required, I'd like it to be 15" as well, SSD or at least space to add one would be nice too. Everything else is just a bonus.

If you have no strict requirements, definitely xx20 or xx30.

It's mostly just going to be youtube/shitposting machine, so I don't have stricts requirements. I'm leaning towards the X because it's more compact, but the T might have better thermals and has a higher res screen.

I have 2 choices:

Option 1:
Dell E6440
i7-4710MQ
8GB RAM

$580

Option 2:
Dell E6440
i5 4300M
4gb RAM
128gb SSD
shit tier 1366x768
$295

Any advice on which one to get? I'm leaning more towards the i7 since I'll be using the express slot with a GTX 780 Ti for gaming.

I will be getting an external monitor as well, but I like the 900p screen on the first option too.

Any advice on which to get?

Option 2 is a much better deal.
You really don't need a super high resolution on a 13" laptop if that's your concern, especially not if you want to use it for """gaming""".

libreboot doesn't compile from source right now
>>64698878
you probably want to see if you can just modify it in the chip, but there's no guarantee it can be bigger (or smaller). for that you want to play with cbfstool, which you can get from coreboot's git in build/util.
or, just build coreboot without blobs. i don't know what the situation is with libreboot, but i know for a fact that with coreboot on a t400 you can run seabios and get into most operating systems with no vgabios, no ME, no microcode updates, and reverse engineered gigabit ethernet configuration. the only thing proprietary running on my t400s is the embedded controller firmware.

-All the rubber bumpers (the circles, and the little prongs) but I haven't found a cheap source yet. Suggestions?
-express slot hinge doesn't really work. I haven't had a chance to open it and diagnose the problem but any idea why?
-so I stripped the screw head on the hinge tightener real bad. If I was to replace those, could I drill a hole into it and remove them that way?

Cheers /tpg/

Maybe it's the msata drives. I only started having that issue after the last creators update in September. Pretty close to flashing coreboot and putting in an ivy bridge chip to see if that helps but looks like I'm the only one with that issue so I doubt it has anything to do with graphics/chipset drivers.

Its a random 2D carbon fiber wrap that I got on eBay, just a sticker, no texture. You can get a decent sized roll for $15 I think, maybe $23 to wrap a few TPs.

The laptop is my A31p, old photo, I don't have the W700ds or X1C3 anymore. :(

Try to get the Employee discount.
Other than being beta testers on laptops, buying new is OK if you have a decent warranty on it.

I'd say about 10% of people get problems on it, and then you have a .5% chance there will be a sort of recall on it.

A year used model can be had for $300 to $700 off from the newer one.
Although I've owned 40+ thinkpads, all used, I ended up buying a factory refurb X1C3 a few years back. Just only recently did I buy a new laptop at full value, a PixelBook lol.

if you're not a fag that uses their laptop for "programming" and doing """productive""" linux shit all day, you're not the person who would want one

people want thinkpads because of their sturdyness and keyboard layout. basically oldfags and hipsters use them. they're loved for how much you can tinker them too. but they're old as shit and the new ones are garbage and borderline apple-tier. performance is pretty shit even compared to brand new $200 walmart laptops made recently. battery life is eh-tier even if you replace or upgrade on some models.

I've reseated the ram on both laptops. The thing is only one laptop started doing it then the other after the fall creators update. How much would you pay for x230 with the FHD installed? Let's assume its on the acceptable condition (no cracks/breaks but sign of use, etc).

I'm asking for friend.
>>
>>64714653
It was the plastic clips unfortunately
>>
"On the x230 with the FHD mod, there is higher Temperature on GPU/CPU, especially when you attach a external screen. This is because that the original output is still alive, actually the system will recognize TWO screen panels with the original one disabled partially. The same video signal will still be outputted to the original port. When you attach a 2nd screen (like a external monitor) the system will have to maintain the screen output of 3 panels actually."

I've narrowed my choice down to either a *30 or *40 series, depending on how good a deal I can find on either kind. But I'm stuck deciding between the X and T. I'm leaning towards the X because of how cute it is, but I'm worried the screen might just be a tad too small and I'm not sure how the thermals and fan are compared to the T. I work a lot in libraries and archives, so I can't really have my fans going turbo loud all the time.

My t61p, which I've used regularly for the past six years, gave an ugly cracking sound when I went to open it like an hour ago. The outside of the left hinge seems to be bulging out of the bezel on the bottom left corner of the display part, looking like the hinge has broken.

How do I investigate this problem? Is hinge replacement an option, given that I can do maintenance on ThinkPads up to thermal compound replacement? Are there other problems that could have happened here, such as the rollcage becoming fucked as it supposedly does on the later T500/W500 models?

Have any other europeans here ever bought a thinkpad from US ebay? I don't mind waiting longer for shipping, since it's not exactly an urgent purchase or anything.

I'm not sure, but from what I've read the ebay global shipping program thing has taxes and import costs already applied so even though it's easily around 50 euro shipping costs, I wouldn't be hit with another 50-100 euro import tax/cost once it arrives here. That is if I'm interpreting this right, but I'm not sure. The shipping + taxes adds a decent slice, but I get the feeling that the US gets better deals more often than the EU.

I'm retarded apparently...

How do I install RAM into my thinkpad? Youtube videos make it look effortless. Mine won't go deep enough into the socket to "click" when I push it down. I'm scared of applying too much force.
>>
>>64720408
I have an X230 btw. Installing RAM should be easy if you look at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MpRJE81r4kg, but I'm stuck at 1:03 .
>>
Any EU or Germany thinkpad owners? Ebay is generally shit, should I just go firm to firm and ask them if they're throwing any away?
>>
>>64720445
Belgian here. I bought my X220 from a UK seller on eBay for a little over 200 euromonies. I found my X200 from a local seller also on eBay for 120-130 euromonies. This was a couple of years ago, so I thought the prices were alright.

Are there any other local auction site to check out if the prices aren't good know? I guess you could try firm to firm, but I'd guess you'd be knocking on a lot of doors.
>>
>>64720423
Ah, the way to press it in was weird. It had to be super angled up while you did it.
>>
>>64720886
I remember this being with most laptops.
The angle's a bit weird the first time you try putting it in.
>>
>>64720850
Another Belgian here. I've asked around a few of my relatives, but it seems a lot of government places have to send their old tech back to some firm or another instead of being able to sell them off/throw them away. I sort of envy the americans when I hear they pull x200's and whatnot out of dumpsters. Even though it's an older series than what I'm looking for, getting anything for free will always be nice. Their ebay prices also seem generally way better. Too bad import costs kill the difference, or I'd just order from them.
>>
>>64717429
You mean fortunately
Any X200/X201 keyboard should work
See if you can get a broken one

I want to move, not share, MOVE large amounts of data from my Windows Desktop to my Thinkpad. If I don't have a crossover cable, can I still transfer via ethernet if they are on the same network? How do I do it in software ( both Win10)
>>
>>64720984
My company does the same. I think the form they're being shipped to might sell them somewhere.

I know there are a few sellers selling refurbished now, media-monster being one. I feel like the prices are a bit too much, but they do give some warranty.

Besides eBay and that, I'd be checking tweakers and 2dehands.be if I was looking for another ThinkPad.
>>
>>64721092
*firm

Sorry, I'm phone posting
>>
>>64721092
I'm seriously hating media monster after a few days now. Their ads clog up 2dehands, and they ask way too much for what they're selling.
>>
Is an x220 too outdated to record with OBS? If so, what might be a better alternative? I'm trying to record footage of simple game playthroughs.
>>
I was in class (college student) the other day and we were discussing computers and stuff. I ended up getting into an argument over the quality of computers, with me stating that Thinkpads were some of the toughest laptops and the other student saying that Macs were the toughest.

I stood up and dropped my Thinkpad (T470) from chest height (roughly 5'5, 1.6509 Meters for literally everyone else in the world) and let it fall to the ground. The class went silent as I proceeded to pick it back up and show the class that there was not a scratch on it, and the system worked perfectly. (I also did this with my phone, an S8), then challenged the Mac fanboy to do the same with his Pro and IphoneX.

Following the demonstration and challenge he refused as he "would not risk it." And shortly after the professor arrived.

Be honest, did I over react?

I just rechecked their site. Hmm... I somehow remember them being cheaper... Definitely not an option now.
I saw an X61s with an SSD for 100 eurobucks a few months ago on eBay. I kinda regret not buying it, even though my X200 doesn't even get used that much.

This is the third time you have posted this, I think the question should be "do you need a friend?".
>>
>>64721314
I'd just like to find an x230 for cheap. I can add ram, an SSD and an IPS screen later on, maybe even shop around and try to get them on the cheap. Though I think it might actually be cheaper to get one with an IPS screen from the get-go, if only the germans on ebay would stop overpricing.

It's kinda sad that the best I've found so far on 2dehands was an X230 with an IPS screen and shit everything else for 200 euro. But then again these are the same people asking 750 euro for an old macbook with a broken screen, so I'm not sure what I was expecting.
>>
>>64721314
I just bought an X61s for 119€ on basically a whim, and because I've always wanted one. 1.6GHz CPU, 4G RAM, 100G conventional hard disk. Supposedly in good condition, battery goes for 1-2h while idle (or was it 2-3h? can't remember).

I think I win. At least it'll be a cool toy for a while.

What's the upgrade path for a X61s anyway? Thinking of putting a spare Vertex 2 (120G, from 2010-ish!) in there and maybe a stinky chinky battery in case the built-in thing wasn't measured in battery-draining BIOS menu.

Depends on how bad it is.
On some of my laptops it didn't do anything
But on others it made a huge difference.
With my original x220 changing the past did help a bit, but with my current x220t it did nothing.
Same with my t430 and w520.

to be fair its actually around 650, but shipping will likely bring it to 700. why not? its already got an SSD and HDD, the i7 4800MQ is not even close to dated, and its already got the 32gb of ram it can max out at inside it. plus its in basically new condition, super light wear. wouldn't buying one in good condition without all that and upgrading cost about the same?

You could make an argument for that. Just upgrade to a maximum 16GB RAM, a quad core CPU like the i7-2840QM (or even Ivy Bridge models with Coreboot), and an eGPU. Then that T420 will be a seriously powerful machine.

Also all of these upgrades cost several times the value of the base laptop so that's another aspect of the $3k civic meme.

brings back memories, sorry for the personal blog but.
I had a sweet gaming pc I built in 2007, the last update was a better graphics card in 2008.
It had a slick 4:3 monitor, which I used since 2005. I slowly witness the decline of 4:3 and rise of the fucking widescreen. So much so that when my monitor failed I refused to buy a 16:something screen, thankfully I manage to fix it.
The pc truly began to suffer after 2013. Most games were already widescreen by then, making them squash in 4:3 monitors but my pc couldnt run 2014-2015 games properly. I decided to update after I realised I couldn't run witcher at all let alone run it on low.

I do miss 4:3 though, even though most webpages and games are not designed for it, I loved to watch old anime on full screen. I hate the fucking black gaps when I watch them now.
Would really buy a 4:3 laptop just for that
>>
>>64713533
You can change that in the bios setting, literally its called something like "change fn-ctrl placement"
>>
I'm using a USB wifi adapter because my X220 refuses to read the internal wifi card and even the new one I bought for it after a thermal paste change. An anon said that pic related works so fuck it I'm just gonna shove the USB wifi card inside if I can't get this shit to work.
>>
>>64725221
I wish someone made a SATA 3 to female USB 3.1 adapter.
I need cheap alternatives to SSDs.

Would be amazing on Linux as a dedicated /boot/ with a HDD as /home/
>>
>>64719682
I have both a X61t and a X220. I can't speak for the non tablet version of the X61t but the X220 is a lot lighter and feels more portable honestly. Even after changing the thermal paste, upgrading to 4gb ram, and SSD it still struggled with some websites. I do love the 4:3 but the old specs and the barely 2 hour battery life kinda ruined it for me. It's possible to do casual browsing and you can watch that 480p anime if you want but its age shows. I'm a lot happier with my X220.

I just lost my Benq joybook r23e because my son droped it on the ground.

Hpt a NX6125 instead to replace it and im happy

SAD i just lost $400 in repiars on the old R23E thing.
the worse part is all the replacement parts are still in the mail.
didn't know if my gpu was gone also because the external screen wouldn't work and my buggered screen was showing a very very dull image of random colours on boot and it keeped not booting up because of a bad rom.
I liked the look of my joybook

RIP

I copied all the files from my nx7400 since they both have a card bus and a cf reader.

I was letting my wife borrow my x201i she really likes it.
me i'm still into old pc's
as soon as i get my nx6125
I'm just going to transfer all the haredware over.
bitof a bgger i need a new charger but what ever
uniqe thing about this NX6125 is that it as duel cardbus PCMCIA so my nx7400 and 6125 can use the same cf cards

They're better designed, as in no retarded drop hinge, indicator lights etc etc
They outbench 50 and 60 series thinkpads in performance

Egpu capable
Actually cheaper than buying a 50 or 60 series
Igpu isn't a huge piece of shit either

The biggest drawback of the X230 is the garbage screen options

The base model CPU for X230 is i5-3210 though.

I'm not saying you should buy X260 over X230. I'm just saying that you are factually wrong when you say that X230 outperforms X260, at least when comparing base models or i7 models head to head.

High end X230 will outperform base X260 and is preferable if you consider price and performance. Screen and battery life may tip the odds to X260 favour though.
