If you're looking for purchase advice, state your budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad T, X, and W/P Series if you want the Real Business Experience™

>Other business laptops are welcome in /tpg/ (Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

Libreboot-compatible models:
>T60, X60; X200, T400/500; W500.
Modern models:
>X220/X230 - 12", 768p, cheap and light
>T420/T430 - 14", 900p, widely available, socketed CPU, both Coreboot-compatible (Ivy Bridge CPU support on T420); Old keyboard swap on *30 series
>T520/530; W520/530 - 15", 1080p, DTR, 32GB RAM on quadcore models, USB 3.0
>T440p/540p; W540/1 - Last Thinkpads with socketed processors, easily replaceable trackpad (W541 doesn't need trackpad replacement)
>P-Series - 15'' + 17'', 4K display, up to 64GB of RAM, Xeon CPU option. Expensive.

Why ThinkPad?
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet
>Great durability: magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop
>Easy to repair (most models), upgrade & maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model, spare parts easy & cheap to obtain
>The best TrackPoint, great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support

If I disable the T430's NVS 5400M GPU from the BIOS settings, will the GPU still consume energy and produce heat or will really be turned off?

This is my first laptop with a dedicated GPU and I really don't see a need to having it on this laptop as I mainly use Linux and the weeb games that I play through Wine and VMs work fine with the integrated HD 4000.

I'm going to do install a quad core CPU so I don't want the GPU taking battery life and cooling that the CPU could benefit from.

Hey all you /tpg/ niggers. Is there a vertical dock out there? I have a T450.

I'm trying to turn my setup into a triple-monitor (with the thinkpad display as the 3rd) and since Mini Displayport adapters that output to more than 1 monitor at a time are stupid expensive, I think I might get a dock.

But I don't want to use the TP keyboard since it'd bring the actual laptop display too close to me, so I'll just hook up an external keyboard, but then I don't want the thinkpad's fat ass to be sitting there taking up desk space with a redundant keyboard. So I really want to just open it 180* and stick it fully upright.

There are stands for that but nothing that uses the docking port on the back.

Higher number = newer = more likely to hold a better charge. Aftermarket Chinese batteries are a crapshoot, but can definitely be better than old ass OEM batteries.

Hey, bought an X230T that just came in today. Is the screen supposed to flop around? It stays up but it's nowhere near as firm as my X230.

>>65543383
You can try to tighten up the hinge, but one latch is definitely going to be worse than two hinges. If it's really bad, you can always order a new hinge.
>>
>>65543407
Thanks anon, appreciated. The screen likes to rest a few degrees off, I guess; like, it's only supposed to turn the one way but it turns the other way a bit. Tightening should help? Or should I just send it back?
>>
>>65543407
It's a 9 cell
https://articulo.mercadolibre.com.mx/MLM-598594276-lenovo-thinkpad-bateria-57-9-celdas-_JM the site is in spanish, but you cn probably pick something up from the numbers
>>
>>65543432
Honestly, I've never disassembled the hinge on an x230t, but it seems reasonable that tightening should help. If you have a return windows, it's definitely worth giving it a shot. Also, find out the cost of a replacement hinge. You have to keep in mind that a 5 or 6 year old laptop is not going to be in perfect condition.
>>65543440
That battery does not list T420 as a supported model, so definitely make sure it's actually compatible with your laptop. It seems that model of battery is still in production, so if that's a brand new battery then it's probably pretty good. I can order that battery direct from Lenovo for $160 USD. No idea about pricing in your country.
>>
The pointer on my X230 occasionally becomes unresponsive. Happens with both the trackpoint and the trackpad. Normally it works again after a few seconds, sometimes it never recovers until I close and reopen the lid. I opened it up and reseated the connectors to the keyboard and the trackpad, but no luck in fixing it.

What makes it extra weird: I bought it with W10 installed, which would BSOD (with driver related errors) almost every time I touched the trackpad or trackpoint. I didn't care so much at the time since I was just going to install Ubuntu, anyway. But clearly there's still something going on. Since this is consistent across OSes, I'm doubting this is exclusively a driver issue. And as far as I'm aware, the trackpad and trackpoint are considered entirely separate hardware devices (like having two different mice plugged in at once). Is there something fundamentally fucked about the mobo?
>>
>>65543493
That makes plenty of sense, yeah. There's a few things wrong with it but it's one of the cheapest ones on eBay, nothing wrong with paying a few extra bucks I guess. Thanks alot anon
>>
>>65543493
Oops, I didnt notice it isnt supported. How do you know wheter a battery is good or not? Is it just the cells?
>>
I've come to the conclusion that LSU is broken and useless, at least for the t520/t530. I thought it might have been my OEM disc, so I tried with the technet ISOs and still have the same problem. It only detects half of the drivers the computer needs and always thinks that the video card needs its driver installed. What a piece of shit. Now i need to manually download everything and try to guess at what is actually in the computer.
>>
>>65543542
No problem. Just being your friendly neighborhood Lenovo certified tech.
>>65543577
Well the number of cells indicates how much power the battery could store from the factory. Buying used, age and number of cells are both important factors to consider prior to buying. Aesthetic is another big factor. I hate the batteries the stick out the ass of the laptop, for example. Not really sure if that answers your question. I've been drinking.

You're working on a 6 or 7 year old laptop, so any OEM replacement battery is going to be like 3-4 years old to begin with, and will not hold as much of a charge as it did brand new. If I were you, I'd go for the newest OEM battery you can afford. Either that, or I'd get two Chinese aftermarket ones if that's cheaper. If you get an aftermarket you'll probably have to flash your BIOS to get rid of the whitelist.

>>
>>65543523
This might be wrong or unhelpful, but there is a checkbox in the settings for the driver that says something like "prioritize keyboard input" that's supposed to stop you from bumping the trackpad as you type, but on my 230t it used to make my trackpad/point spas out and be useless for like 5 seconds

Not that fragile compared to a MacBook but i still wouldn't throw it around, disassembly is very easy, just unscrew the bottom lid, the screen bezel is just held by glue and plastic tabs, but there isn't much to be done, the ram is soldered and you can only install an ssd on the big m2 slot and a 3g card on the small one, also the motherboard is very small, the battery is around 2/3 of the laptop.

See the black little tab on the battery power pins? Well mine has completely snapped off on my T400, it makes it so that the battery wont discharge, but i can still charge the battery.
WTF why is that dumb plastic bit so important? Is there anything i can do to fix it.

Guys, I think my power adapter just died.
My laptop doesn't see it's connected most of the time, and if I turn it on with battery removed it turns off after few seconds.
I got it in October with my thinkpad, it was new, original lenovo adapter. It didn't take any heavy damage, I might have kicked it a little but that's it.
I'm gonna try to give it back on warranty, but I need to buy a replacement anyway.

Are dying power adapters common in lenovo? What could have gone wrong?
What should I pay attention to while buying new one, beside matching slim tip connector? Should it be exactly 170W/20V/8.5A like my current one?
>>
>>65546348

>>65546300
I just checked a dissembled thinkpad i had and it looks like just a plastic tab, no electrical connection at all, but it does help with alignment so try wiggling the battery a little.

>>65546392
Do you really need a 170W adapter? most thinkpad just use a 65W adapter while the workstation ones uses a 90W.

TBQH I don't really see a wattage number on my adapter, but when I checked my model is being sold with 170W one.
I have P51 workstation and I do make it working hard from time to time.
>>
>>65546527
Oh never mind, a P51 might need a 170W (20v x 8.5A = 170W).

I wouldn't trust a chink replacement for a +100W adapter for safety reasons, so definitely try to get yours replaced.

hello my thinkpad friends. I recently picked up a new t420! I'm excited to get it up and running. It's been sanitized completely (used to be a classified machine) so it's missing all of its RAM and there's no HDD. No biggie. My IT department friends are ultimate bro tier and hooked me up with some brand new ram and cleaned up a 500 gb HDD for me. Gonna have a fully loaded 420 for a cool $45. The HDD is smallform though so it doesn't actually fit comfortably in the drive slot. I'm concerned about moving it around all that much, I don't wanna hurt the drive bay. What sort of solutions are there out there? Does anyone have any recommendation for any hard drive rails I could use?

X230 owner here, same, 150mbit 5Ghz working great, 2.4GHz as well

Used to get 17MB/s transfer speed to my Nas on WiFi in 2.4ghz and 10MB/s stable in 5Ghz on a commercial network (it could be that there was a 100mbit switch somewhere). if you want more there's the integrated gigabit

WiFi is great on it, it gets signal when nothing else does and if it doesn't you can easily assume the problem is on the AP side.

Thank you /g/ I'm so happy with my thinkpad!

I desperately needed a laptop to work on and write in university, but I live on savings and couldn't waste any money.
I remembered the thinkpad meme and got a t530 with docking station and all that.

What a nice laptop, I'm in love.

hey guys. i want to get a thinkpad and need recommendations . im thinking second hand. i basically want something thats lightweightish and has good battery life. a massive bonus would be if it could game a little but im not expecting it to do much as its old and not made for it. as long as it can run old school runescape though.

i had an alienware 15 r3 but sent it back as the trackpad was broken and it was way too fucking big and heavy. im looking for something similar weight to a macbook. i would probably run linux on it too. i had a look at some at a PC fair a week ago and 11 inch ones are too small so 13-14 is what im looking for

Yes, you'd be officially retarded, an used t430 and t440p will last you way more than 5 years for sure, cost 1/9 of a t480 and x220/x230 models are even cheaper. As a re-enrolled drop off you better put your priorities in check

Speaker should be really easy to change. The broken usb will need some soldering skills. The screen will not be cheap but really easy to change. The batteries can be found for 20€ but it's not a good idea to buy a shitty battery, after 4 months you'll need another one, I suggest buying from Duracell direct

Who cares about the pain.

Except for the battery it would be easier to buy a broken one
>>
>>65549560
buy an used one in better conditions, dismantle your current one and sell each single working (and not working) elements on ebay. You'll go even, albeit it may require some time.

or, buy a C grade damaged elsewhere, unsolder USB ports and replace your faulty one, replace the screen, grab the battery, replace the speakers and whatever portion of your laptop lacks "paint" (bezel, palmrest, whatever)

and re-sell unused single spare parts (faulty ones included) on ebay
you can even make a little profit

or, you know
just buy a mac
you could

If you barely followed these generals you'd know already that business-grade used thinkpads are a good deal. Big corps periodically buy them in bulk and periodically scrub them, even if they're perfectly working; on top of that, they're durable. You better feel nervous for something else.

>>
>>65546974
>but visiting the lenovo site to grab the latest drivers never occurred to you?
Yes it did, it's the first thing I did and always do. But fucking laptop brands like these always have drivers on their support page that don't belong on the laptop, EVEN IF YOU HAVE THE SPECIFIC MODEL # AND TYPE. Case and point, the T530 has a bluetooth driver on its support page, the laptop has no bluetooth hardware. Same thing for the wireless drivers, multiple wireless drivers on the support page, but only one is the right driver.

>BIOS shows model info. For any devices without, disassemble.
I was hoping to no disassemble the fucking thing just to find out what type of hardware is in it. If they were my computers I would do it, but their not mine so I am reluctant to.

>In all my years as sysadmin never recall re/installing bare metal where the media didn't load at least some default driver
Well with both these laptops pretty much all the hardware didn't load drivers direct from a fresh install, save from actually running windows update, which I generally try to avoid because it tends to fuck up installing drivers too. Even the ethernet didn't have drivers for it on Win7. I also have a EVGA desktop board where the ethernet needs it's own drivers. So take from that what you will.

>Auto updates for h/w, firmware, os, applications, ANYTHING is bloatshit faggotry 99% of the time. I learned this pretty early, nao u
I knew this before hand as I've delt with these shitty programs in the past, but was told that it would work by an anon in the previous thread.

So found this one:
http://a.co/iYclEbP

on ebay w/ AC adapter for $45. Good deal?

Can anyone redpill me on buying a dock? What do you find it most useful for and is it cumbersome in any way, take up too much space, etc.? I already have a beastly mining/gaming PC sitting in my office that I use sometimes for general computing, and have been battling in my mind between revamping the desk setup to basically become an incubator for the Thinkpad, with the dock at the center, & thus make it my main device which I can break off quickly & have all my tabs up & everything, vs. reserving the thinkpad for purely "light"/mobile use and then arranging the desk setup to fully favor the mining PC as the central, semi-permanently-installed computer. Since it's already always on and sitting there anyway.

Having trouble with my T430. When I press the power button, the Power LED blinks once and then nothing. No leds on the back, no keyboard light. Tried with the power battery out off AC, no dice. Removed HDD and ram. Still not working. Have tried pushing the power button to drain all power.
Thermal paste is fresh, and non-conducive. I'm confused as fuck at this point. My gut says there's a short somewhere but I can't find it. Could I be dealing with a dead motherboard?
>>
>>65552568
You mean you don't have one and are looking for ideas how to replace it?
I just put thin pieces of foam on the sides, I also glued small rubber buttons in the corners of the HDD bay and the plastic cover so the drive doesn't bang around, but the foam alone should be fine for an SSD.
>>
>>65553103
If you want the easy way check Clover OS. It's basically gentoo with some configs done by /g/'s finest autists. The installation is literally as simple as it can be.

>>
>>65553304
Did you take some precautions against ESD when fiddling with your T430 and/or when replacing your thermal paste? There's a lot of guys having fun with their laptop on momma's carpet
Remove everything, wash it with isopropyl alcohol, plug in a (known working) HDD and (known working) RAM banks back again
If still no good, it's ded
>>
>>65553304
Start stripping the thing down. For example, disconnect HDD, then try booting. Next try disconnecting any daughterboards, etc. and see if you can get it to post.

Have you tried a different charger?
>>
>>65553623
I didn't take any esd precautions. The laptop worked for several weeks after I worked on it last though.
Known HDD and Mem won't help, because no memory should give a beep code, correct? And I should be able to get to bios without a storage.
>>
>>65553663
I'll give this a shot. I'll report back tomorrow.
>>
>>65553757
>because no memory should give a beep code, correct?
nope, faulty or non appropriate RAM won't let you boot plain and simple
Always try to boot with at least one RAM module plugged in.

Well, with all the experience you have seems as though the requisite path should be obvious. Have not needed to re-install 7pro myself (still rocking the original factory image minus the lenovno bloat thanks to my fine tune re-constructive massage.) I did, however, cruise over to pcsupport.lenovo.com and every driver needed for a fresh install was available. If you cannot find the correct stuff piecemeal on their site and nothing is forthcoming through "properties" diag boxes/registry entries/etc, then seems you're remanded to physical discovery and/or extracting individual dll's from cab files. It could be the case where the previous owner swapped in non-original components. Can't blame manufacturer for that. You could try a live distro with diagnostics for h/w discovery as a last ditch. Aside from that sounds like surgery is imminent.

Not bait at all, it's just something that I was thinking about.

If I buy a new 9-cell battery, I'll try to not use it when I can simply keep the notebook charging, so I'll just leave this old, almost dead, battery on.
But I was thinking about, what if I need to unplug the notebook and keep using it on the run or something, if it would be possible for me to just change batteries and keep going.

I know that some Thinkpads have an internal battery just for this purpose.

In swapping batteries, the likelihood of an electrical transient occurring while laptop running and a/c adapter plugged in is a risk for you to decide on accepting. For most of us saving, closing, powering down and conversely "button to desktop" represents less than half a minute. Logic says that risk is not worth it.

It's a weird situation. My friend sold one of these to another friend, who wants Arch on it, I think. Not sure what the plan is for the second one. They were trying to do this process and got stuck, so they told me to try working on it for a bit. My friend who bought them initially is also a fan of Arch, so that'll probably just end up on both of them. If either one went to me, I'd probably opt for Void or something that doesn't have systemd.

Thunderbolt 3 can be used to hook up any pci-e device to the laptop, options are limitless but probably going to be used for external gpu, capture card, more storage or whatever else you may want, if laptop will be missing something important in the future, almost certainly there is going to be a pci-e expansion card that will enable it. Also usb-c is eventually going to become a standard and because of mac retardedness you can bet there is going to be an adapter for just about anything ever.

You have been jewed badly. A good reference price in Europe for a i5 grade A with 4GB RAM is 140 €. Sure you'll find a lot of sellers with higher prices, but you can definitively snatch one for that price in less than a month.
Even if you got an i7 and an SSD for that on the fingerprint model, still too much

for 140€? i5-3320, 1600x900, 4 GB RAM (one slot free), 500 GB 7200RPM HDD, DE/FR/US Keyboard layout, flawless technical conditions, no fingerprint scanner
if you are lucky enough to find one with a locked BIOS and you know how to reflash them, you can get that for -20%

for 350€? Well, I'd expect nothing less than a T440p with fingerprint scanner, 500 GB SSD, technically flawless, no signs of wear, IPS 1920x1080 monitor, 16 GB RAM, battery at >90% capacity, i5-4200M/4210M/4300M

you know, it's usually more convenient to actually upgrade Thinkpads (CPU, RAM, disk, screen) on you own. It's true you could easily resell an upgraded Thinkpad to users in need and to inexperienced ebay buyers like you (no offence) for nothing less than 200€ (first example, T430; 220~240 if you're selling one with a less common keyboard layout)(as long as it's a Western Europe layout) and 480€ (T440p, second example; 550€ if you have more than 50 positive feedback)

So I'm running Windows 10 on my x230, and I installed most of the drivers/software recommended by Lenovo. I just wanted everything to work smoothly and have functionality such as TLP. But it seems incredibly bloated. I skimmed through task manager quickly and I spotted an insane amount of processes.
>at least 13 processes associated with Lenovo/Thinkpad
>at least 5 Synaptic processes
>at least 9 Intel related processes
So my question is, is all this shit really necessary, or is it bloat? I feel like doing a fresh install and only picking the absolute vital software/drivers. Idk just looking at the task manager makes me uncomfortable with all this "bloat".
(I do have a Linux install on my other drive, but unfortunately I have reasons to use W10. Blame Korea.)
>>
>>65562084
anywhere you will look you will see the answer to this is that this shit company installs adware and bloatware on all their devices and just reinstalling windows or linux is always the best thing to do
>>
>>65562109
I guess so. The problem is on W10 they don't offer individual software such as the TLP battery management. No, you have to install their shitty Vantage """app""" from the MS Store, and that comes bundled with useless shit such as their own f.lux alternative, some shitty Dolby audio management, and other useless bloat.
I wonder it's possible to just install their W7 software instead.
>>
>>65562169
you don't need any of the shit that lenovo pre-installs. It doesn't do anything as is designed to spy on you! "Battery management" my ass. This is just 2010 download.com shittery that people think they need. You have a battery icon on your laptop, that's all you need. Just reinstall windows completely.
>>
>>65562193
I don't think it's possible to limit battery charge to certain % using only windows inbuilt tools, that's the only thing the power management software is worth installing for.
>>
>>65562084
Windows 10 will install the essential drivers to make the laptop work, anything else is bloat.

Just like >>65562209 said. I'm mainly concerned about the "TLP" functionality. And the only way to have that on W10 is to install their Vantage """app""". Also one thing is the touchpad/trackpoint sensitivity/acceleration. You need the Synaptics software to change that to a comfortable setting.
While when I install a new Linux distro all I need to do is install the tlp package, and then tweak the trackpoint in some config files. Zzzz. Fuck Korea.

Trimming the bloat is probably not too different from win7, but would still suggest reinstalling to seven. I've mostly observed win10 from afar and infrequently provided support to family members/friends. Just that smigde of experience and 100% positive I won't be migrating to that version. Watever your eventual path try these sites as they may be of some help: blackviper dot com and askvg dot com

Yeah. Problem is I've got a legit copy of W10 Education (for free of course). If I were to wipe and install W7 I would need to find a clean iso and use some spooky activator. Nowadays I'm too afraid to pirate Windows. I'm a pussy, I know.
And installing W7 would rape my grub bootloader setup, and I just cba to deal with that rn. Whereas W10 has this "refresh" feature that seems to just wipe the OS and make it fresh again, so I don't think that would do some bootloader fuckery.
