How is the quality for Unicomp? Do they use the same tech as IBM Model M or is the original still best
>>
>>65555624
that's the problem, they use the same exact tooling. so it hasn't been updated in over 20 years
>>
>>65555624
They're about the same quality as the 90's Lexmark IBM M's, which makes sense because it's the same factory.

I'm finally planning on building my first board this summer. Any recs for a good soldering iron, desoldering pump and actual solder to use?
https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00ANZRT4M/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A15CBTP5BTSNTZ&psc=1
This one is the one I'm looking at for the iron. Do I need to buy any extra tips for it?
>>
>>65559161
I have the same iron, it's pretty good. For soldering switches you won't need anything besides the standard chisel tip. If you don't mind spending the extra dosh, get an FR300 for the desoldering iron. Makes things far easier and cleaner. As for solder I use some kester 63/37 rosin core/noclean.
>>
>>65555665
>not owning a vortex race 3 with silver switches
so poor that you have to own a second hand model f, pathetic pleb
>>
>>65559232
Holy crap the FR300 is 400 leaf bucks. I could really use it but it's way out of my budget sadly. I got rec'd this desoldering pump, not sure if it's good:
https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01K72SBWY/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?smid=A3GH6DZ64KS4YP&psc=1
>>
>>65559268
I think I paid around 360 syrupbux for mine off ebay (just gotta make sure the listing is for 120V input voltage). That said a solder sucker like that should also work fine. If you ever plan on desoldering a bunch of shit in the future, the FR300 will be worth it.
>>
>>65559285
Thank anon. Should I get some desoldering wick too just in case? Or is the pump good enough?
>>
>>65559335
I found desoldering braid to just be a pain in the ass to be honest. It does work, but whether or not the pin will actually be free or still stuck to the pad with a bit of solder is a bit of a crapshoot in my experience.
>>
>>65559352
Ok, good to know. I just have a last question before I plan the orders for my build. I'm gonna use the kbd75 pcb and I want to get genuine cherry stabilizers for them. Would I need to solder them in as well? Or is better to use the gmk screw in stabilizers instead? I actually am not too familiar with the differences between plate, pcb and screw in stabs.
>>
>>65559382
Cherry stabs either clip into the plate or the PCB itself. All the custom boards I've seen have plates compatible with PCB mount cherry stabs, so no point in getting the plate mount ones really. There are also PCB mount ones that screw down, but I haven't really seen them aside from those custom made transparent stabs.
>>
Are Topres 45g on HHKB really better than membrane and regular rubber domes?

Why not mouse with your left hand? I'm not left handed but use my left to mouse. It takes some time to learn but it's really nice because I can have my mouse on my left, keyboard in the middle, and pad of paper/phone/whatever to my right. If you do have a numpad, that extra space won't be an issue because you just shift the keyboard.

RK61 or the Poker "Mini" which I'm assuming is just a Poker II.

So I'm putting together a GMMK. I got the board (bare) and caps. Now I just need the switch.
I got a kailh sample pack and was happy with box pale blues and burnt orange (clicky and tactile, respectively). The problem is I want a light switch with sharp tactility (these are both heavy). So I am waiting for the box royals to get a tester. That's gonna be in May. Add shipping time, I'll have my switches after making my descision at around late June I think.

Yeah, that doesn't go away. It reduces slightly because there is less travel for it to accelerate back to the top, but in the end it doesn't make much of a difference. Go listen to youtube videos of o-ring installs, there is some difference but you'll see how slight it is. If you are bothering office mates you'll still be bothering office mates.

/g/entoomen, what would be the reason of one particular key randomly not registering a press, even if bottomed out? I have a 1.5 yo Filco with cherry browns and the Del key started to behave weirdly few days ago. If it's pressed for the first time after a longer pause, it doesn't register 80% of the time, after that it's 10% or so. Should I take the motherfucker apart? What should I look for?

Gateron browns are cheaper, smoother, slightly heavier, and more tactile. The tactile bump in cherry clears is barely noticable and just sort of makes the keys feel cheap and wobbly.

But then again, plenty of people don't give a shit. If you like them, then you shouldn't need /mkg/'s approval.

So my friend is looking to get a highly customizable keyboard with extra macro keys on it.
So far, he's really looking at the corsair k95 just for the extra macro keys.

He wants to get a k95, replace the switches with some silent blacks, new keycaps, and remove the LEDs. (he's going for silence and typing feel over aesthetics, so he doesn't mind the corsair board looking kinda gaudy by default)

Would a keyboard like a k95 work without LEDs installed? and if so, would it cause any errors with the software since there's nothing for it to control?

corsair boards have an autistic layout that almost no keycaps sets fit
if he built one it would be fully reprogrammable, is that enough?
he would have to desolder all the switches and solder new ones in anyways so its not much of a stretch
>>
>>65567541
If he's goes the corsair route he's gonna end up spending 200 bucks on top of whatever the keyboard costs because corsair is retarded. At around that price point he can build a fully custom keyboard of his own design.
Have him build a keyboard with
http://www.keyboard-layout-editor.com/
It gives you the specifications for the plate to cut out as well as the firmware needed for that layout.
Just let him know the more elaborate he makes the keyboard the more expensive it will be to make.

You use the json layout file from that on the QMK website to get the key positions and names. Then you do the matrix and pin/layer assignments there and even compile the firmware all nice and neat.
>>

Interdasting. How hard is it to make a new matrix for a split board though? Just glancing through the qmk documentation and it seems like it assumes you're just building a non split board with a single teensy or some other controller.

he and I both have good soldering stations and supplies
he doesn't care too much if the extra keys on the side have PBT caps on them since he's not going to be mashing down on them on a regular basis, and even if he did, he said he'd just get one of those $10 blank sets from ebay.

As far as the LEDs go, since they're not through-hole, he can just turn them off and no even bother with them

so all in, $50 for 130 switches from KBDfans, $30 for some vortex PBT caps (possibly less if there's anything decent on ali), $11 (optional) for blank caps.
IDK where you're getting $200 from, senpai.

did someone really get banned for making fun of 40% keyboards...
wtf...
40% are terrible. Unless you got a separate macropad which literally defeats the point of a 40%.

Facts:

MX browns are overhated really, not dramatically tactile but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing
MX green, blue and especially white are dogshit
Non‐retooled MX linears (gray, nature white) are dogshit
MX clear is good
Zealio and other MX Clear clones are massively overhyped, they are not very significantly better than ergo clears.
Gateron linears are excellent stock and a fantastic value in light of that
Box thick click switches deserve the hype and are head and shoulders above the next best Cherry compatible clicky switch (modded included)
Yes, mods are the only way to get the very best linear/tactile switches
Topre is dramatically overrated, they are a very weakly tactile rubber dome. A HHKB is some of the worst value in the game right now. I have not tried BKE clone domes though.
Buckling Spring is strangely and unpleasantly stiff, and yes Model F > Model M in feeling and sound. Overall a decent switch, however.
Blue alps is very good but overhyped, amber alps is better as far as that goes. Brown alps and alps plate spring are superb.
Beamspring does deserve the hype, it is excellent

>alps plate spring are superb.
no they aren't. once you start picking up speed they start to feel like shit, which isn't a problem with something like a model F or even M
>>
>>65570301
but what about the alps cream/white damped in the aek2 i'm getting

are they any good or should i get a dell at101 too, linearise the blacks and build a frankenstein board
