If you're looking for purchase advice, state your budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad T, X, and W/P Series if you want the Real Business Experience™

>Other business laptops are welcome in /tpg/ (Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

Libreboot-compatible models:
>T60, X60; X200, T400/500; W500.
Modern models:
>X220/X230 - 12", 768p, cheap and light
>T420/T430 - 14", 900p, widely available, socketed CPU, both Coreboot-compatible (Ivy Bridge CPU support on T420); Old keyboard swap on *30 series
>T520/530; W520/530 - 15", 1080p, DTR, 32GB RAM on quadcore models, USB 3.0
>T440p/540p; W540/1 - Last Thinkpads with socketed processors, easily replaceable trackpad (W541 doesn't need trackpad replacement)
>P-Series - 15'' + 17'', 4K display, up to 64GB of RAM, Xeon CPU option. Expensive.

Why ThinkPad?
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet
>Great durability: magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop
>Easy to repair (most models), upgrade & maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model, spare parts easy & cheap to obtain
>The best TrackPoint, great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support

Does everyone keep their thinkpads clean or do they add stickers and stuff to them?

It seems like everyone has this fascination with keeping the original stickers on their laptops without any customization.

Definitely not newer than xx20 series unless you want to mess with the keyboard mod, in which case xx30 is acceptable.
If you care about the free software meme try X200 and libreboot it. I have one, it's pretty comfy. X60 is easier to libreboot but pretty old at this point.
If you don't care much for librebooting try X220 (including tablet) and T420 depending on what size you need.

>i did see the t440p. it comes with an i5 whereas the carbon is an i7.
it seems you didn't see shit, not even the thinkwiki.
The T440p can feature i3, i5 and i7. M and MQ series are the default ones. The X1 Carbon Second Gen features U series processors only. An average i5 M outperforms an i7 U in benchmarks.
Moreover, the CPU is socketed and can be upgraded. So, a T440p can be bought with an i3 and upgraded with an i7.
>do you have any idea about the battery life and weight of the two laptops?
The T440p weight 700 grams more. Wew.
The T440 is a little slimmer, albeit not as much as upgradable. Not that it seems you care, since you're a consumerist whore given that
>i went from a macbook to an alienware
a fucking alienware, wow. Not something to brag about in public to be honest
>portability
drop 700 grams from your tits and you'll be more portable as well
>what sort of upgrades can you make to the t440p?
Literally everything, minus the "Classic keyboard" mod (but you can use the T450 trackpad)

You don't put stickers on a Ferrari
Stickers are like tattoos, they are never really good, they just either disguise a defect or mark you as a whore

>>
>>65564780
No, it's actually a bit of a pain. You need to update the bios with a custom patch (thinkpad-ec I think it was called) and cut down some bits in the palmrest. I did it on my T530. I think there was a guide somewhere on how to do that in various xx30 models.
>>
>>65564780
Meh, you need to file down a couple of nubs (check the wiki) and then flash this https://github.com/hamishcoleman/thinkpad-ec to make (most) of the keys work
>>

>>65564852

I was the guy in the last thread asking about my fucked up pointer. Basically, the pointer will periodically freeze on the screen on my X230, on both Ubuntu and Windows (in this case it came with BSODs). I've noticed that the trackpad shits the bed way more than the trackpoint, so I'm thinking the trackpad is the bigger factor.

I took another peek inside today and noticed the connector to the palmrest, pic related. One branch of the ribbon goes to the fingerprint reader, the other to the trackpad. The branch to the trackpad looks like it's been cut just a bit over one of the wires, though it might be a little hard to make out in the photo. Might this be related at all to my issue?
>>
I'd like to buy an x220 (any flavor) from Europe. Do you think I might be able to stay under 100 euros? Lets say an i5 with HDD...

Any particular advice?
>>
>>65562301
asked this in last thread but didn't get a complete answer. My friend is selling a T420s for $100 CAD (like $75 USD), pretty good condition but I haven't thoroughly inspected it, should I buy it? (It would be my first thinkpad and I've been wanting to get one for a while, just wondering if it's a good choice)
>>
>>65562301
I'm torn between X220/230 and T420/430. I prefer the xx20 keyboards, so for simplicities sake I could go for that rather than having to replace. I never use optical drive. My usage is typically Arch linux with i3 and qutebrowser. I do a bit of C and Bash and I'm studying for OSCP.
The X220 seems like a good choice for the portability, and I don't need discrete graphics, but the overall spec of T430 are more alluring.
Thoughts?

I'm trying to use Openbox on my Thinkpad T20 (it's got 2nd gen Intel integrated graphics) for the first time and I'm having trouble with compositing. I was having major screen tearing at first, which I attempted to resolve with Compton. I'm using the glx backend and the opengl option for vsync, which fixes my vsync problems, but now when I watch certain videos in MPV (especially ones with higher bitrates) the video will freeze while the audio continues to play. Resizing the window, or maximizing, or un-maximizing, causes the video to properly play back again. Can any other anons with a similar setup share their configurations or any tips on how best to handle compositing for a non-compositing window manager?

I think i'm overestimating how powerful my new laptop needs to be. i was thinking about getting the new X1 from costco for $1600. 16gb, new i7 8550u and 512gb ssd
I found out my work computer (which is great) has 16gbs but uses an old i5. a coworker, who uses his thinkpad for some serious stuff, has an e series that he got for around 1k new.

should i go for something cheaper? the thing about the X1 is it doesn't have a dGPU so i can't use tensorflow with it. the t480 that i'm looking at does. for an i5 8350u, 16gbs of ram, 500gb hdd, I can save around $250. plus i can upgrade the components if i wanted to
i've also had the same laptop for a few years now (2012 inspiron) and the t480 would already be a significant upgrade over that. X1 is starting to seem like overkill
i'm a student doing data science stuff and application development

>Why? UK has a dumbass huge return button for no reason, it just takes up real estate.
true, but it's an incredibly satisfying key to press and you don't need to be too accurate to hit it
it always seemed odd to me that the \| key on a us layout is given almost as much space as backspace or return, despite \| not being used that much even when it comes to programming

I kinda view keyboard layouts the same way I view languages and OSes. You might have a preference, but it's good to be agnostic. I've had to work with Mac US and UK layouts, and 'normal' US and UK layouts. I guess I've found US easy to fall back on despite being UK based because most OSes default to US layout. Outside of the workplace though, I enjoy trying different things, and that Jap layout seems to have a lot of keys so I can dickabout (also helps that I know kana).

i would've bought the chinese keyboard for my t430 but i jap keyboard is on the way. it apparently has a back light. i bought it for 20 bucks too

>I guess I've found US easy to fall back on despite being UK based because most OSes default to US layout.
that's actually an interesting point, when I started using a japanese keyboard I decided to make the switch to using the us layout on my os, it works fairly well as you have jkl;'\ or JKL:"| on the home row which is fairly close to how physical us keyboards look, and even when I go back to using a uk keyboard I still keep using the us layout because you still get every key you normally would without software with the exception of £ and €
I like the physical layout of iso keyboards a lot more but some of the key placements on iso layouts are obnoxious, some european iso layouts are borderline unusable, using the us layout on an iso keyboard always works really well though

once upon a time there was a guide to harden a thinkpad like described in that guide
essentially, it boiled down in ripping it open, removing everything unneeded (bluetooth, fingerprint scanner, wi-fi modules if they needed some proprietary blob, webcam, mic and so on) and flashing it with trannyboot
I wonder if using some copper foil tape, or, better, some conductive cloth tape (ideally, better resembling a faraday cage) would be of any help to insulate everything on the inside of the laptop, beneath the monitor too (with the only obvious exception of the wi fi antenna, if they are kept)

The more I think about it the more the X1 looks like way overkill. The dGPU that comes with it doesn't even work with tensorflow. It would actually be cheaper to skip it and get a better processor and then maybe get an eGPU later. I can even skip out on getting 16 gigs and go with 8 and just upgrade later if needed; the cost difference is more than the cost of a separate 8 gb ram stick.

This is fucking perfect, this all comes out to slightly over $1k instead of $1.6k. I can use the money to buy another moniter and a new desk+chair I've been needing

I got a stupid issue.

Pulled out my thinkpad I havent used in months. it works off AC power, and it works of battery power but it wont charge the battery and when I boot it off AC only, plug in the battery, and remove the battery, it wont charge it, and AC adapter stops working.

ac adapter is pulling .3 watts when the battery is plugged in
when its running off ac only its pulling around 15-20 watts. if I plug in the battery it drops to .5 or so and wont charge.

happens in the bios as well.

Well I've got an issue, I found a really cheap (like 15 dollars) T60P recently, the seller described it as working but he'd taken the parts out, besides RAM
The picture was real blurry but it arrived (pic related)
It has some issues I'm unsure about.
It's battery is working, I don't have a power adapter on me right now to plug it in.

1. It makes a strange crackle when on, it sounds like its coming from the battery.
2. It won't boot anything, I tried windows install on an old 2.5HDD, I tried debian on a USB, as well as puppy linux.
It will start to boot, then fail and get stuck each time, just won't boot.
I'm unsure what could be causing this?
Maybe the battery not giving enough power?
Something fucked on the inside?
The ram?
Any ideas lads?

I just ought my first thinkpad (used t400) and its getting about 2 hours on a charge. I'm trying to decide if its worth it to buy a new battery for it.
>>
>>65572726
Kinda, the main reason Thinkpads are so cheap on ebay is because how lowkey they are on the consumer market, if you make them popular the prices are gonna spike a lot.

Anyone use WWAN in their thinkpad?
>>
>>65573282
Yes. My T520 unfortunately only has a 3G modem.

I thought about replacing it with a T580 any opinions on the model?

Is it possible that a x200 that comes with a pre-flashed Libreboot bios, contains some kind of malicious code in th bios?

I've sold 10 T420's (probably most of them to you faggots or some pajeets) so far and I make sure before shipping them out I cum on a napkin and give the whole machine a nice light coating of cum.
If it's a new buyer or they message me demanding more pics or whatever I remove the keys on the keyboard, fluff some dandruff, hair, etc in there, and I stick my finger up my ass and run it all over the base of the board.
Then I clean the keys with alcohol and the aforementioned cum layer, makes it look new but after a while you get the thinkpad smell(tm) which is really just my fermenting shit particles that fly out when the thing heats up, mixed with my cum.
>>
>>65574539
link me your store please I want one, I'm already in the habit of licking my thinkpads + I love cum

Does anyone make custom palm rests for the X220T without a trackpad in them? I keep mine disabled in the BIOS anyway. Might be nice to just have empty space there.

>>
>>65574636
Well, the X200 didn't have trackpad. I've seen one in person and I prefer the aesthetic. It also has less wasted space at the bottom. Can't do much about that, though.
>>
Still butthurt about my i7 t430 being stolen, cheer me up guys
>>
>>65574642
yeah and normal people hated it so much it was quickly replaced by the X201, not the the X series is an amazingly popular line in the first place
there's no "wasted space", you're just autistic
>>
>>65574669
Don't get too hung up on the wording. I have as many X series ThinkPads as T series. It'd just be nice if they didn't have a trackpad. It doesn't really hurt me. I even tap/drum on it sometimes for fun since it's disabled anyway. It'd just look nicer if it were slightly more compact.

then just buy an actual tablet you mongoloid

is X31 still worth it?

What browser have you found to be the most power efficient on Linux nowadays? I was looking into Chromium, but it looks like it's still incredibly power hungry. Are Firefox or Vivaldi good alternatives?

Running a T430 with Arch and TLP enabled.

If I'm going for an X220 just to chill with (no heavy programs or tasks) on a linux distro for fun, does it make any difference whether I go for an i7 or an i5 model?

Heaviest tasks will be vanilla wow / Civ 3 and some programming but otherwise just uni course work.

I need to figure out if this is the AC adapter, or bad mobo.

I got meme'd and bought a T420 on eBay. Great condition. I upgraded the RAM, and got an SSD. Installed Win10, had a great running laptop. Then I decided to upgrade the CPU. Bought an i7 2670QM. After I installed it the laptop never powered on again. No idea what happened. Original seller offered $50 refund which I took.

Got a used mobo on eBay for $30, installed the new CPU, powers on fine with new CPU.

Put everything back together, and it boots up, but now has a new issue.

It will not charger the battery. The laptop will run off AC power only, but it runs super slow at 0.79GHz. Using my power meter the AC adapter draws 18watts with no battery. If I plug in the battery the laptop wont charge it, and the draw drops to 0.8 watts. If I remove the battery, the laptop will loose power. It does this in Windows, Ubunty live CD, and the BIOS.

So, is the replacement mobo bad/damaged, or did my AC adapter eat shit too?

With all this talk of temps, how low should a T420 idle? Could it be about time to change the paste on this?
>>
Is there anything easier to carry around on vacation than a x220? The T420 is too bulky.

this isn't a scat thread stop slinging poo!
>>
>>65577918
I had x220 and upgraded it to T460s and later to T480s, newer ultrabooks are definitely easier to carry around as they are thinner and lighter(only 1.3kg). Although those newer thinkpads are quite expensive.
>>
>>65577740
Your temps are fine
>>
>>65578068
Cool, I thought those were alright for a laptop but I figured I'd ask. I've got this big-ass heat sink with a 5-inch fan on my desktop and my temps are consistently around 15C even when playing PUBG so I didn't know if they should be low like that or not.

I'm lurking for my first thinkpad, opinions on the T410? Found one at a pet store with a dead hdd and the poor woman thinks the whole thing is dead, I will probably end up buying it dirt cheap since she already replaced it. Battery is fine and there is no external damage.

Try FF ESR, Quantum has too much bloat.

Not a lot of difference between TrackPoints, nubs are the stuff to be careful but is also mostly a matter of personal preference.
