If you're looking for purchase advice, state your budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad T, X, and W/P Series if you want the Real Business Experience™

>Other business laptops are welcome in /tpg/ (Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

Libreboot-compatible models:
>T60 (check lcd), X60(s/t); X200(s/t. -s requires soldering), T400(s)/500; W500.

Modern models:
>X220/X230 - 12", 768p, cheap and light
>T420/T430 - 14", 900p, widely available, socketed CPU, both Coreboot-compatible (Ivy Bridge CPU support on T420); Quad Core Compatible, Old keyboard swap on *30 series
>T520/530; W520/530 - 15", 1080p, DTR, 32GB RAM on quadcore models, USB 3.0
>T440p/540p; W540/1 - Last Thinkpads with socketed processors, easily replaceable trackpad (W541 doesn't need trackpad replacement)
>P-Series - 15'' + 17'', 4K display, up to 64GB of RAM, Xeon CPU option. Expensive.

Why ThinkPad?
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet
>Great durability: magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop
>Easy to repair (most models), upgrade & maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model, spare parts easy & cheap to obtain
>The best TrackPoint™, great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad

Dude, just get a T420/30, if you're carrying it around in a backpack it's not a lot of extra weight compared to say an X220. I went from an X220 to a T420 and I don't feel the difference. Granted I'm not a skinny dweeb, but you should be fine anyway

It looks like the docking port is Thundebolt 3.0, but the USB-C port is not Thunderbolt 3.0.

So, the only way to utilize Thunderbolt 3.0 with the A485 is going to be an adapter (unlikely since the dock is proprietary) or, more realisitically, you'll need to buy the dock that also has a USB-C Thunderbolt 3.0 port.

In that case, you'd only be able to use the Thunderbolt 3.0 while docked. Which is annoying, but it looks like this might be the only possible way for Intel to allowed Thunderbolt 3.0 with a Ryzen laptop, so hopefully that's how things work out.

>>

It's not even about the weight also the dimensions, I often want to carry groceries or whatever else inside my bag and a brick like t440p would take like half of my bag. Fuck off with your "t440p is flawless" bullshit, it's just best at price/performance.
>>
>>66701710
>Fuck off with your "t440p is flawless" bullshit

The only thing i'm saying is that a 14" laptop that weighs almost the same as an average book is not heavy at all for daily commuting.
>>
>>66701710
>t440p would take like half of my bag.

homosexuality conformed.
>>
>>66701285
The docking port is not proprietary, it's literaly just the two USB-C ports and a mini Ethernet port next to them. Look at the plug on the dock.

Intel was supposed to make TB3 roalty-free by 2018, so there shouldn't be anything stopping AMD based laptops from having Thunderbolt, but so far there's none.

Of course, if they managed to hack up the USB ports to have some sorf of external Thunderbolt controller capability, It'd be great, but I don't think it's very likely. And I would not even be mad if I needed to use the dock to get Thunderbolt since the only thing I'd be using it for would be external graphics at my desk.

That doesn't mean they haven't blacklisted AMD, which it really looks like they have.

Not a single Ryzen motherboard or laptop supports Thunderbolt 3.0.
>>
>>66701803
>it's literaly just the two USB-C ports and a mini Ethernet port next to them
Then why is #9 (the Thunderboly 3.0 port) clearly not a USB-C port? It might not be porprietary, but it's obviously not a USB-C port.

How's 1440p on a 14" dispaly...on Windows 10?
What's the effective resolution, scaled, and are the kinks of Windows scaling sorted out by now?

I'm debating between the 1440p hdr 500 nit display vs the standard 1080p 300 nit display on the current X1 Carbon. I want it the top spec because it's brighter, but I would like hello windows support and 1440p is a bit pointless to me if it's not even going to provide more real estate than 1080p.

I have 1440p on T480s and on 100% scaling it's too small for me, I use it personally on 125% scaling and it's just fine, you get screen estate slightly bigger than 1080p(2048x1152@125%). I wasn't convinced about screen either but now that I have it it's incredibly nice, and I had 1080p on T460s before this one.
>>
>>66700872
not him but as someone who owns both the t420 and x220, the x220 looks much better because of no dusty speaker grills and overall cuteness
it also has a perfect form factor for fullscreen applications like, the screen is as high as the t420 but smaller in width, making it harder to multitask by stacking windows next to each other but is nonetheless great for everything else

I mean, TB3 is defined as a USB-C alternate mode. It always uses a USB-C connector. The connector below 9 is the mini Ethernet port, which is proprietary, but can be adapted to RJ45 easily with a dongle.

I have a budget of $600, but can go up to $1000 if absolutely needed.

I want to be able to do some 3D modeling and some work in Unity - specifically, I'm trying to make a visually simplistic game and require something with just a teeny bit more power than the Intel Integrated GPU.

I'd like to be able to do some kind of upgrade to it, be it popping in a new screen, nicer CPU, or SSD but that's not necessary.

Best would preferably have a rectangular, large screen, and - very important, most important part of this - the 7-row keyboard (like the T420)

The xX20 models are the last ones to use the 7 row keyboard, you can mod one on the xX30 models but it's not perfect, the problem is that any modern iGPU will be better than most GPUs you can find on older 7 row models.

Is there too much difference between the E485 and the A485? Should I hold for the A? The price on the E is pretty attractive (600 gbp for the base model with ryzen5). So I'm not sure if the increase in quality (which seems pretty vague) is worth an extra 200 or whatever.

Is it really that better in terms of build quality to guarantee the bigger price?

I don't really know how good or bad is the E build quality stacked against other lines.

I respect you for using vim, I've tried to learn it and just got annoyed and went back to Kate/KDevelop/whatever other shit I'm using at the moment. I've used the same keybinds in every editor for years, so any difference at already feels extremely alien. I have way too many keybind habits already ingrained into the way I work that switching all of them is just too much effort for what it's worth.

ONLY if the resolution is below 1080p (ie 768p shit). FullHD T/W510 to 530 have one of the best TN panels ever made. Shit, they're even better than IPS W540s. The only concern is that some 530s have cheaper, lower quality 1080p panels in their later production units, but it's still better than pretty much any other thickbads

I picked up three T420's from a small business owner on Craigslist. I have since redone the thermal paste on all three, swapped the camera off one to one of the others, and given two to family as gifts. This has been the best computer I've ever used. Not the best laptop, not the best shitposting box, but the best computer, hands down. I only use my overpowered desktop for shitcoin and Diablo III at this point. Only a handful of DOOM mods make the T420 chug, and those obviously have ridiculous amounts of particle and gib effects. Enjoy your stay. I would post my Bulgarian AK74 as a show of brotherly faggot love but my shithead hillbilly cousin's gunsmith has been dying of cancer and all that jazz so I'll be lucky if the kit ever comes back to me.

Guys, I recently changed the keyboard on a T440p and now the laptop turns off if the power adapter is plugged in while the battery is attached. Linux doesn't report the the battery is charging nor does it say the line power is attached. Did I short something somehow? Can this be fixed?

I have a spare T440p I may swap parts into. I may just swap everything into that and change the screen assemblies.

Also any other SSD would be almost the same, when it comes to programs too.
Unless its a shitty SSD like the Kingston UV and some of their gimped HyperX series.
Remember to buy 240GB SSDs or bigger, avoid Chink brands, Kingston (Bad controllers, Mystery meat tier NAND in the UV/V series, slow even for modern SSDs) and PNY(Low quality in general).

If you have a T420/X220 or newer just buy a 860 EVO in mSATA and use it together the HDD for storage.
>>
>>66704654
>in mSATA
Isn't the mSATA port only 3GB/s on the 20-series?
Only the main bay and ultrabay are 6GB/s.
The 2.5" ones seem to be cheaper anyway (just bought a 500gb 860 and it was $20 cheaper), so you could take the money you save and get an ultrabay HDD adapter.
>>
>>66704671
The speed from the SSDs is from the huge IOPS they have (70-90k), while HDDs only have 250-350 on average, the SATA2 limit doesn't really bottleneck it by a huge amount but it does so ultrabay is an option too.

The A485 is up on the PSREF!

http://psref.lenovo.com/Product/ThinkPad_A485

It looks great, but I'm irritated that I can't get 2x4GB of RAM, Ryzen mobile works better with dual channel and this only lists 1x8GB and 1x16GB. So, I'd have to buy it and then buy two 4GB SODIMM sticks since it's unlikely I'll be able to get a matching 8GB SODIMM for the pre-installed one.

Additionally, a lot of people have shown concern about RealTek Wi-Fi, but I'm not sure how much of an issue that really is.

>What would be the advantage of the A over the E?
I've split on waiting for the A485 or E485 (E485 isn't in the US, yet, if ever), but the A-series is better.

Basically, the A-series is based on the T-series and both the A485 and E485 are neutered a bit in terms of purchasing options, so that widens their gap a bit, but I'll tell you the few things I remember off the top of my head that makes the A485 better than the E485.

The A485 has the option for a backlit keyboard, it's made out of more steel and other stronger materials, it's more resistant to damage, it has two batteries (one of which is hotswappable), it has drain holes rather than just spill resistance, and of course other additional options like a WQHD screen.

Not sure what happened I've never had any problems working with keyboards not sure how it shorted but it must have. To clarify, the system works fine now. As it's a different system. It was charging OK in the Ubuntu live environment. Before swapping the hardware, I tried Windows, Ubuntu and all had the same charging / power down problems. I tried flashing the bios but it wouldn't allow it since it wasn't possible to use both the power sources at once. I'm disappointed a T440p had to eat the dust and the time it cost me but whatever, live and learn.
I'm installing Debian Stable and Xfce now. Take care.

If your taking studies and learning, you probably want something reliable. Boring answer but any Debian based distro (ubuntu, mint) or Fedora is your best bet since they're pretty low maitenance and they have a lot of software thats easy to install (with .apt and .rpm).

you can get it to be stable eventually, although I wouldn't recommend it at all
I got it to run perfectly after many hardships on my t420, but it didn't last beyond the week-long high of it working, I went back to Gentoo fairly quickly
at first you're impressed at how nice it runs, and the eye candy, but soon enough there's gonna be something you don't like and you'll look for ways to change it only to realize that you can't, then things will pile up and it will be extremely frustrating every time you're forced to deal with something you'd have changed days ago otherwise

it's even more frustrating and locked down than windows, my laptop started feeling like more of a phone with how little I could do with it
if you're not a Linux person then maybe you'll be fine with it but it was just a very underwhelming experience to me

If you've got some free time, I highly recommend trying out GuixSD. It's a really cool distro, but it's doing some things that more "normal" distros don't, so it can be frustrating at times. Just hop in their IRC, keep the manual on hand, and you should be good. It's a lot of fun. You configure most system stuff in one config file, so you could do something like copy your config to a fresh install to instantly get the same packages and settings after a quick update.

You can get any keyboard for any thinkpad from sites like aliexpress, Spanish keyboard have a lot of keys that you will miss on English keyboards like ñ, ¿, ¡, and tilde.

Can I make calls on models that have sim slots, or is that limited to sms and data only?

Not him but its Mario party without the minigames and more RNG, simple game.

Maybe with the right modem and if the sim card has a phone number assigned, but it involves a lot AT commands.

i have x200 and i either have to upgrade or get a new one
upgrading (ssd, 8gb ram, new battery) would cost like 230€

x230 costs about the same but would require new battery
>>
>>66709374
>What's the appeal of this game
Having fun with three other players, everything is RNG-based so it always ends in enjoyable shitfests.

And people in the thread call anyone who calls t440p a basedboy if they claim it's heavy, it is really genuenly bulky and heavy compared to lighter x series or ultrabooks.

third world here, bought a decent condition X230 (the basic TFT/HDD/6gb ram) at the equivalent of us$230 (they're usually selling them here at about us$350). I'm happy with it, but just can't stop feeling bad when I look at ebay prices... New and shittier build quality/specs laptops here (not tpads, but might be more modern looking or even have a nicer display) are 3 times that price tho... did I made a wrong choice?

Because it's not heavy for a 14" laptop at all.

>it is really genuenly bulky and heavy compared to lighter x series or ultrabooks
>smaller laptop weighs less
well no shit

Is this the cheapest I can get a new battery for? Seems good I just wanna know if im missing out

Yeah I just posted >>66710350 so I need a new one. I don't mind the 9 cell sticking out a bit i just dunno the best place to buy one cheap yet reputable is.

Observing those numbers, otherwise go on ebay and get a cheap used thinkpad instead.

Puyo2Tetris and Spelunky in my ips x230. I use 8bitdo gamepad. It's comfy.

If you want a cheap SSD just get an ADATA SU800, anything cheaper is looking for troubles.
>>
>>66705263
I have an e6440 and it rules. But you cant change the screen, the connections are not compatible, so make sure you get one with an hd screen on it.

mine is running a 4th gen i7 with radeo gpu, ssd and secondary hdd in the drive bay
>>
>>66711508
Are there IPS models? Can't go back to terrible business lcds.
>>
>>66706733
Fedora LXDE/XFCE/LXQT spins are pretty lightweight. You can go crazy and grab the minimal iso that only gives you command line and install i3 or a wm of ypur choice.
>>
So, I could get a W541 with a 256 SSD for around 440 eurobucks. Should I go for it?
>>
best compatible CPU for the t430 for:

1. perfomance
2. value

also note that I have the 90W adapter, so no limitation from the power side
>>
>>66711305
Kingston UV400, anything is OK as long as it has a dram buffer like this one.
>>
Did i do good /tpg/?

x200, 1280x800, 320gb, missing hdd caddy, dead battery
minimal wear was probably used in dock all the time.
Has 1 dent and thats where the speaker is, there is a small piece of magnesium missing.

30euros with shipping.

Just done with taking it apart and cleaning.

How much do you guys think this will cost?

http://psref.lenovo.com/Detail/ThinkPad/ThinkPad_A485?M=20MU000MUS

I'll probably have to replace the RAM with two 4GB sticks because dual channel helps the Ryzen mobile chips preform better and it looks like Lenovo isn't selling them with two 4GB RAM sticks.

I'd get another 8GB RAM stick, but I doubt I'll be able to perfectly match the same exact stick that it comes with. Plus, it probably has shit cas latency since it's apparently a 2666Mhz stick running at 2400Mhz.

Well this is new. Last night this guy was working perfectly fine. No issues I can think of. Not even some weird quirk that “I’ll look into later.”

Now this is as far as it’ll go. Caps & Num lock lights up briefly on startup, optical drive buzzes briefly. But the HD never comes on at all (or any of the other lights.) there’s an SSD so I can’t listen for spinning. Screen is blank, no “Thinkpad” screen, lamp doesn’t even come on. I’ve tried plugging in an external display and nothing comes up there. There’s no error beeps. And I only need a short press of the power button to shut it off, I don’t have to long press to force it. I’ve tried blindly entering my password to log in, but I don’t see any activity from the HD indicating activity. Only thing I’ve done with it since last night was put it in my backpack and walk for 20 minutes.

I’m stumped.

>>

You could always go with 1x8GB and then put in 2x16GB.

Why do you want 32GB, but not the 2700U?
