Question anons, we've talked a bit before about requests that got underwhelming results, but how about artists that just went way beyond expectations?

Asking cause pretty recently I commissioned some art of a pretty niche character. Added a bit more funds than the recommended amount, and mostly told them to do whatever they wanted with it. Delivery time comes and here I am expecting maybe 1 or 2 multi-frame pictures, and instead the madwoman delivers basically a 10 page fucking manga. With a few pages in colour even. Would request a hell of a lot more from them, but they pretty rarely open up their skeb.

Anyone else have any similar experiences?

Yeah, my go to now is to always fit in a "Thank you for your consideration" at the end of all of my requests. I figure putting that in as a sort of "thanks for at least taking a look at the request" bumps up the odds of approval just the tiniest bit more.

Might borrow that good morning/evening idea from you though. Probably sounds better than the basic hello I usually go with.

Commissioned an artist for the first time and they immediately accepted despite their average response time being 3 days only for them to do 50% of the work in the first week and then sit on the request for a month before cancelling it because they decided they'd rather keep drawing some fanart of a currently airing show. I was evidently their only skeb, too. Oh well, at least I got the satisfaction from tanking their 100% completion rate.

My experience with the more western oriented artists here such as ones on /aco/ is that at best they feel overpriced compared to skeb, and at worst you deal with grifters and hucksters. I've done commissions through the /aco/ threads and /v/ and while there was a decent amount of good ones there were also insanely bad ones, the only time ive gotten scammed actually

I'm just happy whenever an artist accepts a request that includes a niche character to begin with. Hasn't happened to often, but it's always sad to see a rejection loke that, especially when it's from an artist who draws people's OCs or FFXIV character and all that.

So, might be a weird question. But anyone know artists that prefer minimal directions, and want to draw something however the hell they want? When I first started Skeb comms, I was real nitpicky with the details. But nowadays I find it more fun just giving them a character, a scenario, and then saying "do whatever you want." And getting surprised by the results.

But I get that some artists actually find the lack of specific details stressful. So any recommendations for artists that do want that creative freedom?

so i just got back my first ever pixiv request from an artist i like and i love it. only thing i'm disappointed at is that i hoped for a gift file and for the image resolution to be higher (i commissioned them on skeb previously and i got a higher res picture).

It sounds harsh anon, but being real here if you can't afford a 7K skeb, then you probably shouldn't be seeking commissions to begin with. If you want to be cheap go to a cheap artist and hope for the best but expect cheap quality in return. If you want something better, either save or suck it up.

Plus there's plenty of ways to afford pricuer artists even on a budget. There's ways you can split a payment into pieces and pay over time on Skeb if you look into it enough. I've done it a few times for artists who are in the 40,000+ yen range. But otherwise just eat the full cost upfront.

Missed the deadline twice, first time they sent a request for a resend. And I was really hopeful, but 2nd deadline passed without any fanfare. Sucks cause I love their artstyle, and what was funny is they completed a request for the character I wanted. Just not mine.

Their completion rate was by no means high, so it was a bit of a risk. But holy shit it tanked down all the way to 17%.

One of my first anime was Yakitate!! Japan, where one of the main girls was a cute schoolgirl called Azusegawa Tsukino. She never really got much in the way of good art, though, hence why I want more.

In the series itself, the main characters have to get through a lot of trials to avoid her family's bakery from going bankrupt or taken over. You could easily imagine a bad end scenario where they end up failing. And as a result, she ends up having to curry the favour of some fat businessman old enough to be her father by becoming his fuckslut to protect her friends.

Okay, anon. So this is a trade secret of mine, but it might be skirting the line of what is okay for Skeb. I haven't been hammered for it after doing this for months, but still only do this if you're okay with grey area stuff.

I use this thing called Quadpay (or ZIP now, they rebranded), that let's you create a virtual card for an online transaction. Letting you pay the cost in 4. Say you have a $200 item. you pay $50 every two weeks.

Well one day I was like, I wonder if this would work with Skeb! And, well, it did. Skeb accepted the payment method, artist approved, and I got my delivery while paying it off over the course of 6 weeks instead of all at once. And also as a bonus, since the app creates a virtual VISA card you can even use cards that Skeb normally wouldn't accept, like Amex.

There is a caveat where you kind of have to make sure you're going for artists that approve quickly. Since the virtual card could expire before they accept. And refunds might act a bit wonky. But I don't know because I haven't had to refund when using this method yet.

This is why i would like skeb to let artists give you a reason why they declined a request, they can be premade answers such as "Price too low", "I don't like drawing that", "I don't have the skill to draw that", "i don't draw copyright characters", "not now but maybe next time" ,etc etc.
Even if it was optional it would be fine

When an artist declines, i don't like to feel pushy about it by sending them another request more than twice, i would like to know if they would do it for more money or if they simply don't want to draw it no matter the price.

Specially those artists who take a long time to decline your request, they seem to wait for it to expire instead of being them the ones who decline it, as if they are scared of doing it themselves, feels like they are hoping you cancel the request so you come back with a higher offer, as if we could read minds.
It's pretty annoying, i very much prefer them to decline quickly so i can move on to another artist.

skeb will never allow anything that leads to communication. communication means they have to do more work, and acknowledge that skeb isn't a request box but an actual middleman to commissions.
