To preface, I'm a JP>EN translator. Got me curious, so I made a chat GPT-4 account check to try this out.

I only tried formal, standard language as it is the easier for MTL to parse and shit something decent out (i,e, full sentences, proper grammar, no context needed.) Similar performance to DeepL in terms of TL accuracy, i.e, it does mistakes on pretty much every input, but it gives an ok gist. However, it does so with such confidence it could fool anyone that doesn't already know the right answer.

That being said: it struggles with slang and contextual language, like all MTLs. Speaking of slang, it won't TL most of it (or sexual content). In fact, it often confused normal slang with sexual content and refused to TL it lmao

Finally, it will do the good ol' DeepL trick: if it can't parse something, it will omit it from its output. If you can't read JP, you probably wouldn't even notice this. It does that because it doesn't want to give you gibberish or mess up grammar (it tries REALLY hard to make stuff grammatically coherent, even if it's an inaccurate TL.)

In regards to the translation itself it seems that the AI is taking the context into consideration in a way that I think if you feed a wall of text you'd get better results vs line by line.

For manga I imagine better results by providing an image where the AI would visualize the characters and identify all males/females speaking resolving the pronouns issue often seen on Japanese translation.

Some slangs are indeed censored on purpose by OpenAI but there would be models where this is not the case.

All in all this all AI hype is just starting and it doesn't look like it will stagnate like google translate.
I would even say that in a few years one would just ask the AI to create an all new manga from scratch like you can already ask the AI to write a song, poem or joke in the style of person X. There is already anime created by AI out there.

I tried that. It ended up performing worse than DeepL with walls of text, mostly because it starts getting confused and omits lines it can't fully parse.

I tried feeding it images, but it couldn't parse the text out of them. Maybe you could ask it to cobble up an OCR for you, but then you have to deal with unreliable transcripts.

I should have been more precise: it's not just slang it struggles with, but all colloquial language and structures.

At this point, the only real, tangible improvement to MTL would be a sentient AI. I think it already does what it can do to the extreme limits of its capabilities regarding translation. The rest would really only be possible by TRUE AI.

I'm going through raws from oldest to newest with the incest tag and -inseki in the search to omit it, and so many of the early uploads that qualify for inseki (having the 義母 義姉 in the titles or clearly present in the dialogue) are missing it. Were there just more non-Japanese readers back then that tagging is bound to be inaccurate for older raw uploads? Since there are so many galleries with the with mother tag that should not qualify for it either. Or do people just not care about tagging raws as much? The English translation equivalents usually have the appropriate inseki tag, and I'm talking about uploads that are a decade old by this point, so it's strange that no one bothered tagging inseki for all that time on the raw.

I really wish they'd overhaul exhentai's tagging system. There's just so many things missing. I love doujin where strong women get defeated in battle and humiliated for exampe, but the only tags i have to search for them are "humiliation", "rape" and maybe "forced exposure". There's no tag for instant loss, no tag for dogeza, no tag for strong female character, no tag for a character losing their powers, no tag for surrender. These aren't even particularly niche things. And yet "shark teeth" has a tag. It just feels so arbitrary.
