im writing a character for a early-modern 20th century fantasy setting who's a super-duper marxist-leninist bolshevik type. i dont really know a whole bunch about marxism though, and besides the usual works like capital and the communist manfisto, dont really know where to go besides that.
so, where should i start?

What's his social class? How much education did he get? Is he self-taught? How much marxist knowledge would it be reasonable for him to know, according to his means?

I'd probably watch Reds, the Warren Beatty movie. It's about John Reed who played a role in the revolution. It's kind of long but shorter than reading a book, and you can get the vibe for the world that guy inhabited, the debates they were having, stuff like that, at a time when people were REALLY idealistic about it.

So he's retarded.

You don't need to do much research.

>What's his social class?
he was born and raised in the city, so probably lower middle class. certainly not a peasant
>How much education did he get?
typical schooling, more than enough to be literate and decently educated, though he wasnt politically knowledgeable until ww1 where he was radicalized
>How much marxist knowledge would it be reasonable for him to know, according to his means?
he began reading during world war one, where the only marxist literature available to him was the absolutely bare basics (capital, etc).

Sky is the limit.
I present you Genrikh Grigoryevich Yagoda (Russian: Гéнpих Гpигópьeвич Ягóдa, romanized: Genrikh Grigor'yevich Yagoda, born Yenokh Gershevich Iyeguda
I his youth he became gay prostitute (hense he got nickname Yagoda (cherry in Russian). He was active Marxist and also double agent of Russian secret police (joke about Right wing extremist convention consisting of the FBI agents).
After Revolution he joined communist death squad and indulged into murder and torture of Russian people. He was so good at it he raised to the head of death squads and was choosen by Stalin to execute great purge killing hundreds thousands and imprisoning milions of Russians.
Then as its always happens during Revolutions and Dictatorship he was exexucted himself. When he was arrested they found thousands pornographic photos and pictures in his mansion, top tier achievement in the pre Internet era!
Real life actually beats any grotesque fantasy you can imagine.

Fantasy as in alternative history or a totally different world? For the latter you can just use generic "down with the ruling class; all power to the working man" rethoric and go from there. Look at the second season of Carnival Row for example.
Additionally just read the Communist Manifesto as it's only around 30 pages.
