Why did the old Christian cross have Sun in background?

Were the earlier Christian practitioners worshipping Jesus as Sun god?

It meansjust the crown in form of cross, nothing else. The quintessential Mediterranean solar symbol was inherently the sun-shaped crown carried by Mithra, Helios and Sol Invictus.

Christ - Crown with cross shape
Mithra/Sol Invictus - Crown with Sun shape

It is not that hard, but even a confused retard from a protestant ambit like you can learn basic Christian iconography.

Constantine was a Sun worshipper, and very likely died as one.
The Christians who came to politically dominate Roman retroactively made him a Christian, which he probably wasn't.

Constantine was a Christian and he openly favoured Christians.
Actually, he ended up favouring Arians (the predecesors of Protestants) at the expense of Catholics, the persecution against Catholics did not ended with him but did continue under the reign of his son and reached its peak with Julian the Apostate (the emperor of Arians, barbaroids, Jews and Gnostics) and during the century a lot of as Saint Athanasius ended up in the exile.

It was not until Theodosius the Great stopped the persecution, made Catholicism official religion, banned Arianism and the problem got solved until Protestants did arise among barbaroids in XVI century against Imperial authorities.

Any showing of light rays or golden circles on Jesus represent God's divine light; the "true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world" (John 1:9).
