I only recently learned that the first copper tools known to archaeology are from North America. Before the "chalcolithic" era known to West Asia, people around Lake Superior found very pure chunks of copper that had been exposed by the passing of the glacier, and hammered them into tools.They eventually stopped, because the available copper was turned into decorative items instead (beads and jewelry) so they never got around to learning to smelt and work it.It's called the Old Copper complex. Can't believe I never read about it until this year.
