I came into it knowing nothing about it and was watching it without really a clue what it was about and was wondering all the way through what was going to happen next. I read a whole bunch of stuff online too about what may have happened. It's pretty interesting the different things people take away from it. There's lots of human trafficking theories and other stuff which i hadn't really considered too. I think that's the cleverness of this film, depending on the person, their background and circumstances, can give them a different perspective on it.I like to keep it simple though. You can endlessly read into every little detail and make up plausible scenarios for all of them. I think Ben did kill her. There were lots of cues pointing to exactly that, but the ambiguity of all the clues and the fact that it is not spelled out directly for us, that no one can really say for sure, one way or another, that makes it so delicious.After watching it the second time, knowing what was unfolding it left me chilled, I felt a piece of my soul had leaked away, how anyone can be so callous about another's life. It's a very grey area between sociopath and psychopath but I'd put Ben more in the latter camp. I really had developed feelings for the characters. I just wanted Haemi back, just wanted to see her again.I'm gonna write some more later, I think it'll be therapeutic to discuss it more. I actually watched it 3 nights in a row, don't think I've ever done that before. Again, if you haven't watched it yet, I highly recommend it. It's so superbly done.

In real life, all the clues that he found would not be enough to start a murder investigation, much less result in a guilty verdict and a death sentence

He thought there was never going to be enough evidence to get what he thought was justice for Haemi's death, so he decided to deliver it himself.For someone a little less inclined to commit a crime of passion, perhaps they could have at least reported a missing person, told the police everything they knew and felt and the police would have investigated that sort of thing. At least give some time for things to pan out a bit, time for Haemi to contact him again, time for the police to gather more evidence and figure out what did actually happen.

After the noise (which sounds to me like a gunshot), I hear "...가 안 돼요!" where the first word could be 거기, 여기 or 포기. If it's 거기 or 여기, it might mean "No, not there! to express the speaker's disapproval of someone going to a certain place or doing something in a certain place. If it's 포기, it might mean defiance as in "No, I won't give it up!" or an exhortation to someone else as in "Don't give it up!". There could be an implied "it", an object that shouldn't be relinquished, or it could be a generalised "not giving up". I haven't seen the film.

>>3979929Erm yeah, I guess I mean there was nothing conclusive.Those three points you mention, the cat, the watch and the lack of burned greenhouse are inconclusive by themselves but they do add up together along with all of the other stuff. Who knows what goes on in the mind of a cat. It could just be responding to to his calm mannerism. Any animal will do that. The watch could be one of thousands, belonging to anyone, but Haemi did have one too. There were also lots of other items in that draw that could have been mementos from other female victims. And there was no burned greenhouse, Jongsu checked all of the ones close by. "Yet you missed it" remarked Ben.I did read about the two books or short stories that influenced the making of the film. But, drawing conclusions from one about another is slippery ground to walk on.One other thing I read which I found really interesting was that in the last part of the film Ben is seen applying makeup to another girl and that the word "makeup" in Korean is "cremation". Some heavy symbolism going on there.So many layers, so much depth.
>>3979947I didn't mention Murakami's story since what really got me interested was Faulkner's side of the movie. I'm not sure how familiar you are with Murakami, but if this is the first time you've read him, try not to be put off too much. He does often have some really puzzling and never resolved events in his writing, but that story in particular is one of the more extreme examples. As you probably noticed, there is no murder implication of any sort there, and not even a proper love triangle. Just a couple of events that the main character can't really make sense of.But speaking of symbolism, people getting trapped in wells is a common theme for Murakami, though I can't really tell you everything that it represents. It plays a central role in his novels The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle and Killing Commendatore, both of which I found very enjoyable. Another common theme is people entering alternate realities in their dreams, and having those dreams affect the real reality some way or another. If the movie had been written by Murakami himself, I would have concluded that the greenhouse that Ben burned was the one in Jongsu's dream, which represented something inside him, like the stone that Ben joked about removing from Haemi's heart, that was preventing her from being happy.

Was thinking at times "I'm not sure if I signed up for this." Really brilliant though, I feel richer for watching them. I think Oasis was my favorite.
