These buildings were not planned as they are shown in the pictures. They were gradually expanded and adapted. Often you can tell by the construction and material in which era and for what purpose they were built.

>>4194755
In the house described as having 18ft ceilings, you can still see the arch which has been bricked up and may have once been a shop window like
>>4188252 Perhaps it was once a lace manufacturing / weaving store on the top two floors, with store on the street, before it became a bakery.

>>4188235
What looks like a sweatshop, may have been a dwelling house in the Middle Ages. In fact, these often had only one room, a stove and a door. Glass windows were a luxury. Later, the same design was added on with bricks and may have been used for animal husbandry.

In this epoch on the pictures toilets in the apartments were unknown, only a shithouse in the yard or an outhouse in the stairwells, the houses are all electrified, but it is often still gas light to be seen. Telephone 562 and "Berlin 475" mean the complete telephone numbers, it is the number of telephones at that time.

I would add many of the small 1 level structures were originally
Barns for livestock in winter.

Those are some, at the time, pretty old buildings, likely a few centuries. They were likely not built to any real standard and have been adapted very often. Some of these predate the common use of glass in windows, which is why those look improvised on many. In the middle ages, peasants just stuffed their windows with straw if it was too cold. Glass was freakishly expensive.
Some of the odd look comes from the construction itsself. The lower floors are made of stone, but that was very expensive and the high weigth made builing high a pain. So the upper floors were made of Fachwerk, a wooden framework with the gaps filled in with straw and clay, which was much lighter and more affordable.

Beautiful city, fantastic thread. Period movies never have this sort of lived-in perpetual renewal-dilapidation effect seen on these buildings. How much of this has been destroyed in ww2?
>>
>>4243012
a LOT. When you walk through the city these days there are almost none of the old building fronts preserved. pretty much only on landmark buildings were restored to pre-war looks and the occasional building in-between.

The city centers of Heidelberg, Rothenburg o.d.T. and Bamberg
as well as several others were not so badly affected by the war.

Those listed have similar architecture to the images posted.
You can drive a short distance outside Nurnberg to the small villages
and see the old styles in the original condition.

The city I live in has a Major train hub and everything within about a half mile radius around the Central Station (Hauptbahnhof) was rubble.
As you move away from that area most buildings remained intact

Yea
When I went back and looked I thought the same.
Kinda fits in the recent discussion on the WW II destruction.

I am a bit confused now as a few of the photos are not
from the same Era. Not a crime but a distraction.

Working multiple threads here and the preview process for each thread is time consuming and I am stretching it some.

No worries.
