A collection of 'Phalera' to be mounted on body armour.Roman Empire
Hero of the Soviet Union
>>4641046that is really amazing, were these awarded for bravery?
>>4641049Sort of, look it up:A phalera was a sculpted disk, usually made of gold, silver, bronze or glass, and worn on the breastplate during parades by Roman soldiers who had been awarded it as a kind of medal.[1] Roman military units could also be awarded phalerae for distinguished conduct in action. These awards were often mounted on the staffs of the unit's standards. The term also refers to disks crafted by the continental Celts for religious and ornamental purposes, especially those used on equestrian gear.
>>4641052I was just about to post the wiki too before updating the thread. Interesting, never knew about these.

>>4645640I remember when this medal was coming out and the veteran community had a field day shitting on it. I am an Army combat veteran of OIF, and I really didn't see an issue with it just because I know that has to mentally fuck with someone who just bombs people all day seeing it in Hi-res. But because they do it in safety in a AC room in Arizona or where ever, people thought they didn't deserve it. Considering how many lives those guys save by using drones and not having to send in dudes, and how mentally it has to be hard when there is often collateral damage, I thought they deserved a medal. But you know veterans, if they can shit on someone else to bolster themselves, they'll do it.anyway pic related is the Cholm shield for the much smaller encirclement near Demjansk.

GermanyIn 2008 the discussion about an award for combat bravery arose in Germany. The Bundeswehr had none, yet were engaged in Afghanistan.Head of the army reserve proposed the reinstate the Iron Cross. this image is a mock-up made by a left-leaning magazine."Operation Bravery: Dying Must Be Worthwhile Again"

In case anyone is curious, there's some cool info about the Congressional Medal of Honor. It's the only medal awarded that no matter who wears it, some E-1 private, even a 4-star General would stop in his tracks to salute. It's not the solider per se, it's the medal and what it represents. It's the highest demonstration of courage and self-sacrifice. Usually you have to die to be awarded one, but it has happened that living soldiers get one.But we're talking extreme risk to themselves to save others and hold the enemy off at impossible odds.I met one MoH recipient, when I was stationed in Alaska. He came to speak. He was one of the men featured in the film Black Hawk Down, a Delta Force member. That's all. Just kinda cool.
>>4640608Help me out which medal represents what exactly and who was the "1" that received it?
>>4653860They are just the models of the CMoH for their respective service branch. Same medal, different design really.
>>4653860The '1' is the only recipient of the US Coast Guard to receive the medal.Douglas Albert MunroThis is his citation:For extraordinary heroism and conspicuous gallantry in action above and beyond the call of duty as Officer-in-Charge of a group of Higgins boats, engaged in the evacuation of a Battalion of Marines trapped by enemy Japanese forces at Point Cruz, Guadalcanal, on September 27, 1942. After making preliminary plans for the evacuation of nearly 500 beleaguered Marines, Munro, under constant risk of his life, daringly led five of his small craft toward the shore. As he closed the beach, he signaled the others to land, and then in order to draw the enemy's fire and protect the heavily loaded boats, he valiantly placed his craft with its two small guns as a shield between the beachhead and the Japanese. When the perilous task of evacuation was nearly completed, Munro was killed by enemy fire, but his crew, two of whom were wounded, carried on until the last boat had loaded and cleared the beach. By his outstanding leadership, expert planning, and dauntless devotion to duty, he and his courageous comrades undoubtedly saved the lives of many who otherwise would have perished. He gallantly gave up his life in defense of his country.
>>4653755How embarrassing....
>>4653987Should just have gone with the look of the Militär Verdienstkreuz of Prussia instead of some half-assed pawn shop Iron Cross.Aka the Pour Le Mérite for EM and NCO's
>>4653755became means you were transformed into the medalyou mean to say that is what you were awarded
>>4654013Why? I'm sure you know they've had the Iron Cross since 1813.But I guess when you can't even sing the first two verses of your own national anthem, a traditional medal is also on the chopping block
>>4653987Its even worse than it looks. It comes in cheap plastic box and the complete set is made in China. U-boat Front Clasp in bronze second model
>>4654030U-boat War Badge
>>4654014I was awarded jack shit.I just post pics from the web with their background info.
>>4654023'Muh war on terror' isn't the appropriate conflict for it. Just as the wars of 1864 and 1866 for example, as wel as colonial ventures. It was always reinstated in times of the highest need and peril for the fatherland.I recommend Previtera's excellent "The Iron Time" on this subject.
>>4654030The Bundeswehr Honor Cross for Bravery, as all awards of the German army, are made in Germany by german companies and often in fine cases. Unless you mean the fake 2008 Iron Crosses. That being said, quality has been on the decline across the board in all european and western countries. So most medals indeed look like shit.
>>4654069Good point, but still makes me wonder if Germany would ever reinstate the Iron Cross, say if NATO went to war with Russia
