I finished inking this cartoon copy of a Tony Robert-Fleury painting. I posted the sketch in the last thread. Most of this is inked with the Maru pen.

The lead figure is Philippe Pinel.

How do I start my own sketchbook?
>>
>>3524741
1. Buy it
2. Draw in it
>>
>>3524756
Do I have to buy an actual book or can I just use scraps of paper I have laying around?
>>
>>3524758
Drawing on random pieces of paper is fine, and cheaper than sketchbooks

Having an actual sketchbook though means that you can keep it all in one place. Also they generally have higher quality paper than regular printer paper, but that's really not a big deal for beginners.

If you want to draw, find something you're allowed to draw on and draw on it.

Thank you! And it took a little while (all told, a couple days but not continuous) -mostly from me making decisions, though. When I do most of my ink drawings, I sketch with a colored mech pencil before going in with the ink. I'll sketch out the basic environment/3D space with the horizon & some guidelines from vanishing points FIRST, then figure out what size the humans/characters should be. Once I've got a seemed of scale, I add gestural mannequins and more detailed objects. Once they're tight enough for me to confidently ink over, I do. Then, before I add any color, I figure out where my light source(s) is coming from and lightly outline the core shadow(s) if the form is tricky or if I think I'll forget about it. Then I outline the cast shadows. My horizon line and vanishing points help me apply consistent light and shadows to my forms.

Color comes last! I use Prismacolor markers & colored pencils, paper mate flair pens (medium tip) and Sharpie brand highlighters to color. Markers can help smooth out the roughness of the pencils.

The problem is that you're thinking about it too much. No one's gonna see your sketches so it doesn't really matter. Just make something up on the spot or draw random things you see around you and you'll find yourself drawing a lot more often

>>
>>3531862
Hey, we don't need to be gettin' intense now.

funny, I had the exact opposite problem. never looking at anything to see the actual shape so I was left with blobs that sorta resembled, things. Untill I started sketching the things I saw on my walks through the forest and in my town. after knowing how things looked like I could place them anywhere in a drawing, then I took parts of each thing or person and made my own things, after that I found out just how useful construction is, and drawing simple shapes from different angles. Really, I should have started with that, it makes it much easier to draw things from your head in different angles.

I still find it hard to set a scene and make sure characters look like they're "there" but learning one and two point perspective made it MUCH easier.

But ANYWAY, just start with things you like, look at them, guess what shapes make them up, and you have everything you need to draw them in most ways you would like.

If you want to try some more advanced stuff, proko's videos are the best I've seen; but it you're fine with just simple drawings, his mannequin video has all you need.

An even longer time ago, I had an idea for a lil' story involving these paper dudes.
But I dragged my feet and have no drive to start it.

What, you want them?
>>

>you want free ideas?

well hell yeah!
>>
>>
>>3532158
Thanks! I just started a perspective class at my school, and these are just some thumbnails I've done in my sketchbooks.

I recommend keeping a sketchbook around and just trying to draw different environments to practice perspective. Perspective itself is actually one of the easier things to learn.

What helps me is to look at the non-parallel angles in an environment and drawing them out across the paper, and wherever they intersect, you put a dot for the vanishing points. Then you use those to line up all your other angles, and you can build up the environment you're trying to draw with basic geometric shapes.

And to determine if you're doing 1 or 2-point perspective, if you're looking at anything straight on, it's probably one point, and if you're in front of an edge of something, it's probably two point.

Tfw I can't seem to even draw rocks decently.

This is where noobs would say "RIP me I am done'

But I am just going to keep drawing rocks. I decided it tonight. If I am shit at something I am just going to keep doing it until I am not.

However, anyone has a tip to leave more of the rocks as white space? Also, I am colorblind and I find drawing rocks and trees hard because they sorta end up being all one blob due to the subtle color differences between planes blending together.

Just got back into majorly sketching today, feels kind of good to be back. I really just want to learn how to draw giant robots, anime girls, and sheet like that, so I’m starting to practice again.

A friend recommended I do those 10 minute a day sketch things, and I did three. 2 of these are only a half or even a 1/3 of the full piece, but I didn’t want to waste paper, so I drew them on here.

>>
>>3547104
Does all your work have this level of quality? Not trying to hate but worrying about perspective and stuff at your level might be lower on the list than just shitting out doodles and getting mileage. Just grab a pen and paper and draw everything in your room, then everything in your house then start drawing the things outside and so on.
Not super detailed drawings just doodles.
>>
>>3524221
You gotta give us an idea of what the character is supposed to be. Is it a he or a she? Strong or weak? Big or small? Agile vs brutish? What does it do? What's it's purpose?
You gotta answer these questions with the character design itself.

Right now it looks like background widelife and not the main character of a comic. I only get slight hints at what he/she's personality might be like with how you have the character drawn right now.

>>
>>3547110
Not him, but don't sweat it. There are VERY few things that "have never been done before".

Just mix and match things and themes you like.

But if you're hell-bent on making something no one has thought of, take inspiration from new things being made and happening in real life. Hell, look at the advancements and scientific theories happening each week, not many people would have thought any of this would be possible, but you could be the first to incorporate it into your art.

That's pretty neat actually, have you drawn anything bigger?

I had my dream when I was young, (7?) it was about the size of a room though and seemed to be made of porcelain.

And hey, does anyone draw differently when it's late at night you have to get up at 3:30 but you just keep going at whatever you have in front of you? I do

pretty sweet, but those ridges on those worms wouldn't be so pronounced all the way accross since details kinda smudge together at a distance. also having the shadows that they cast move with the sand could show the shape of the ground.

>>3548862
Proko has a great anatomy series on youtube; even a whole video on heads from different angles. I'm still working on heads myself so that's the best I can give
>>
>>3548862
I actually doubt it's the photo that stretched your drawing. You are probably working on a flat surface, and because of the angle your eyes look at the flat surface you are (while drawing) less aware of the anamorphic perspective taking place.
This is why drawing tables generally are tilted, so you face your drawing surface as flat as possible. Try to be mindful of this when drawing, take moments to look at your paper straight on.

Does anyone know good books or videos on portrait drawing? Or should I just draw a lot of faces and do studies?
Right now my technique is as follows: I draw a vertical line which divides the face in half, draw the outline of the face, then the head, then draw the lines on which the eyes, the nose and the mouth sit. Then draw the facial features. Am I committing to some mistake? Pls correct me.
