>>
>>4992970
Look at real hair and simplify it, break it into forms and construct it as you would a figure. Just because it lacks physical mass doesn’t mean it lacks volume generally and should therefore be constructed out of primitives like anything else. You could even apply the same logic to smoke or clouds. Look at real hair

Am I supposed to "feel the form" when doing gesture or just draw movement lines in a 3D space and add the form later? Or should I just not think in 3D at all and exaggerate lines from observation?
>>
>>4993185
you should focus on fundies, feeling the form comes later after you get fundies at a natural way of drawing

I can kinda feel the form when drawing from imagination (construction) or copying, I just don't know what to do with gesture. Some materials look like cartoony stick figures while others look like full figure sketches.

I'm wondering if the ones that look like full figures are because the artists are so used to it that they don't even bother drawing the stick figure before adding the form.

what's the best way to approach knowing my art sucks but doing a comic anyway?
i'm perfectly comfortable with admitting it sucks, but i can't find a way of saying "yeah, it sucks, that's just something we're stuck with" that doesn't either sound too complacent or too irony poisoned
>>
>>4993964
draw "relatable" comics
>>
>>4993964
To overcome the complacency problem, maybe you can temper the admission that it sucks with a reassurance that you will try to improve, and that despite the lackluster art you'll still try your best to make a worthwhile comic.
>>
how does one approach making a piece that doesn't feel like a waste of time working on?
>>
>>4994089
this question is actually somehow too stupid for the stupid questions thread

make something you want to make. get better so you can express your ideas more faithfully. figure out why you feel like you're wasting your time in the first place and then address that
>>
>>4994091
i wanted to draw my characters, test how i've improved, try out a new method of coloring them in a new program, try to improve my line work
but its not really anything new from what i've drawn. it might look better than previous drawing, but not by much and its still essentially the same

i guess i've learned some things but overall it feels like its not enough
>>
>>4994114
there's just so much i want to do it feels like anything small or "comforting" is just a waste of time, its a crime against my ambition
>>
>>4994114
The nature of improvement is glacial and iterative, there are very few big victories to be had (moments like ahhh, I finally understand perspective, ahh I'm finally starting to understand what it means to feel the form, etc.) aside from these, your daily improvement will be small. To not acknowledge these small victories is silly, but to expect paradigm shifts with every piece is delusion. I think you need to be more realistic with yourself and accept that it will be slow. Be happy with the small improvements, because this is how enormous improvements are made over time, and why mileage and experience and muh 10,000 hours are important. Keep going and have faith. The biggest crime against your ambition is to break down and stop completely because progress seems slow.
>>
>>4994131
And to add to this, even the big victories are just houses built out of bit part victories. More often it's like the things you have been studying are finally clicking into place, rather than some revelation out of the blue. Consistent small victories are king in long term growth
>>
>>4994131
i think I need to be more ambitious but when i am i just realize there's stuff i don't know how to draw and i need study that
like i don't know how to draw this muscle right
then i see other people's art and realize that the drawing ends up not looking "dynamic" enough and I just want to throw it out
then i know i need to learn to draw this pose in a more dynamic way

like if I really want to improve I should be more ambitious but know how to be so, and not waste my time on things that were to lite
>>
>>4994139
But what's confusing about that? Being ambitious naturally means acknowledging you have a long way to go. The solution is to get on with it and reward yourself for making progress, not to spin your wheels and get angry about potentials and hypotheticals.

If your task is too light it should be obvious. If you're not struggling, if you're not finding new questions to ask or new problems to resolve, your task is too light. But there's no point in trying to take on the world all at once. How do you eat an elephant? Measured consistent progress

Partly it sounds like you have some very anime ideas about the importance of ambition, but ambition is nice and easy to talk about. What's important is how you're gonna deal with the slow and endless path to your goal
>>
>>4992103
I suck at construction, I have been practicing anatomy and got good at it but it didn't translate at all to construction. I nottice I'm good at it but take too long so I started practicing sketching but my sketch's suck and they keep getting worse so I went back to drawing slowly and detailed but it's not helping me accomplish what I want
I asked a professional painter but he foods me he doesn't do construction and his best advice was to stare at something for a while then draw it using my imagination. It was fun, I suck at it but I don't think it's helping much either
The only thing that actually helped is to draw an invite sketch of what I have in mind then store it for a day without looking at it and then redraw it and do the same one or two times and at the end it comes out looking kind of what I wanted but his is a horrible process as it takes days and it doesn't work if I wait less time
I'm not sure what I wanted to ask, I'm too stupid to even know my question, I guess is what I currently do going to get better? Am I going to need less time between redrawing? Is it going to work? Should I keep a bunch of sketches in a drawing in order to keep busy and not loose time? That would suck too because I get the urge to draw something and I don't want to just forget about it because I already have a backlog of ugly sketches to work on
>>

can depression actually stop you from becoming an artist?
i though all artists were depressed
>>
>>4995768
I work straight with color after the sketch stage.
Sketch > local color on a layer below the sketch > rough rendering on a layer between the other two > final rendering and touch-ups on a layer above everything else
If I'm doing something difficult or fragile, I'll make a new layer. If I need to liquify, I'll flatten the layers, liquify, then go back to painting on a new layer on top of that.
If I just need to move or resize something I'll usually just copy merged, paste, and touch-up any remnants of the image before the transformation.
I only name layers and use masks if I want to do something complicated and/or precise.
If you want to do commissions or illustration, you'll need to be more organized than that, but for fine art, I like to keep up the flow as much as possible.
>>
>>4996869
Depression makes it very difficult to begin things, due to a lack of motivation. Depressed people are often reclusive, which means they have more time to dedicate to art, and self-critical, which makes it easier to see your own flaws and improve them, but aside from that it is only a hindrance

Pressing hard on your stylus stresses the wrist more than flicking it around does. If you're not constantly dropping your pen on accident you're not holding it lightly enough.

Painting is more akin to sculpting, you just add and add and cutaway and add. Drawing is a lot more challenging in a “put it down right first time” kind of way. But painting poses a whole different bunch of challenges that ultimately make it the more complicated of the two in my opinion

from what ive learned from my time doing art is that it just takes a lot of fkin practice, unironically. as an example, while i'm still ass at drawing hands and feet, i've become able to draw the torso, abdomen, legs and arms, neck and head for the most part without any kind of reference, it just kind of naturally makes sense hwo these things fit together in my drawings. my guess is that after doing these over and over and over my brain, without me even understanding it completely, is able to interpret whether something looks off just from pattern recognition. hope that helps in some way, i dont know the real answer after alll

Dial back the length and prominence of the superciliar arch. A the angle of a womans jaw should be obtuse- a man's jaw (specifically the classic "Square" jaw) approaches 90 degrees, or is at the very least, more acute.
The length of the glabella should be longer- this widens the space of the eye sockets and makes a women's eyes bigger and rounder. Younger women and children typically have a larger frontal eminence on the forehead.
Avoid overstated the masseter or emphasizing the void between the zygomatic arch or the mandible, it makes women look gaunt and sickly- female faces have more fat in them, even into advanced age.

yes, screnless has better ergonomics
>>

For people who are experienced it isn't much of a difference but for people who are not, it just exacerbates their existing issues.

There are a lot of caveats to using a small tablet, both for health reasons was well technique that smaller tablets should be avoided unless one has already developed good habits. When I'm lazy I actually prefer using a small tablet.

Intuos is more ergonomic and thus comfortable. Other comfort details is the display heat and, noise from the fans.

Being autistic and getting dragged into politics too easily and self loathing.
But I think that I'm asking a redundant question; other than being autistic part.
But I can refrain from politics and self loathing on Twitter I guess.
It feels a bit like the normies are out there to ruin my life for some reason; like they just want me to suffer.

There is no "form" in gestural drawing. You're making simple lines to indication movement and expression.

Form is for more finished work, when you're working with actual forms. "Feeling the form" is yet another thing over-emphasized and poorly understood here, it simply means capturing an accurate feeling of the form, where it all flows correctly and exists in it's space as a unified form, not parts slapped together with poor transitions and borders.
>>
>>4993253
That only comes with experience. Knowing when a piece is working or not is up to you, and most students struggle with this in the beginning.

Best advice - if you start feeling doubts, set it aside, start something else. Revisit the piece later, and decide if it's worth continuing.

This is one way a teacher helps, either helping you develop something so you don't fail, or giving you a nudge that it's failing.

This forum can help, by posting work and asking for advice.

The skill here is having a finished endpoint in your mind, and working towards that. That's also something you build towards, and why beginning courses start with simple objects, and you learn how to build towards a finished piece over time. Most beginners also work too far ahead their skills a lot of the time.

If you are feeling it's not good, then put it to the side. Your instincts are probably correct. A lot of art becomes instinctual with experience, yoy just don't have enough, so you question it, or try to plow past it. Start listening to your instincts, it's a skill/muscle that has to be trained along with everything else.

Hair is hair. Doesn't matter if it's a dog, or man, or woman. Hair in masses has a shape, texture, and volume, and often a "grain' in terms of how the hair grows and falls.

You have an entire world of male hair to study. Actually study it - figure out male hair lines, texture, and the forms.

Fear, anxiety, procrastination. Little kids draw for hours because they have none.

It's all in your head.

Probably.

I usually put a 2-3% layer of noise over my final layers, in Overlay mode, to unify paintings. It breaks up the hard edges and unifies it all. I learned this doing photo editing, we'd modify old photos and digital shots, and we'd add film grain or sensor noise back in, because our edits were too 'clean".

The sheer amount of resources and conflicting information here on what materials to use to study is stressing me out and causing me to spend all my time looking up resources and browsing around here instead of ever actually drawing.

You need a way to check your answers.
Otherwise you could be making mistakes, and just repeating those mistakes, and reinforcing those mistakes into a habit.

Don't make it into a grind but just do an hour still life once a week. Then go paint from a photograph of a beautiful scantily clad woman, then go do one from imagination, rinse and repeat.

What does a "finished piece" exactly mean? A fully rendered and detailed drawing or just whatever you can do applying all your current knowledge?
>>
>>5010452
catalog
>>
>>5010553
Finished just means you accomplished whatever you set out to do.
If you set out a goal to do a sketch with the intent to learn something from it, then it's finished even if it's just a sketch. If you set out to do a fully rendered painting complete with background and everything, then it's only finished when you hit that goal.

If you don't have a goal when you start a drawing then you either need to decide when something is finished yourself or just keep working on it forever until you can't bother with it any longer.

Well, if you're not having fun or enjoying it at all, that's the biggest waste of time in my opinion. You don't have to force yourself to only make good drawings, just draw first.

Bad news, this feeling never truly goes away. And it's good, it lets you know what you have to work on next. For now, all that grinding isn't exactly a waste if you're learning something from it, but your learning would be a waste if you don't ever make any finished pieces. the thing is... i already know what i need to work on
i "just drew" for so long and was just "blessed with knowledge" (that video mega) that i have a good idea of all my faults and there's a lot...

i still do some quick sketches of characters but i have such dissatisfaction with myself that i can't finish things

before i needed to focus on college (i wish i could have gone to art)
now that my survival needs have been meet, but also sorta been put on hold thanks to covid
my personal needs seem so big and unrealistic for me to truly reach

its weird, before i used to have the mentality i could have really started focusing on improving art later (as in now) but now i'm so stressed
