any feedback on color and light?some issues with scale too I think
>>5223487You can render well but the composition and light directions are kind of a mess. What is the objective of this illustration? It’s like mish-mashing two stories and isn’t flowing well.

>>5223487composition chief, image would be better if you cut out the left half completely and did nothing else. not only thematically and compositionally but in terms of colour and value too - there's too much contrast in both in a part of the image which shouldn't be the focal point

>>5223558
>>5223558just stupid quick stuff, little practices here and there
>>5223487also with regard to your question about scale, there is literally no atmospheric perspective in this at all, which is part of the problem with the colours and values too. if you wanna keep the mess on the left then try to incorporate some

>>5224578>meme boardfuck off you're the only meme here.
>>5224589interestingthat proves a point i've been trying to analyzethis board is only shit when you're bad at drawingnow i get itbecause of this, i think it would make sense to remove the 'critique' from the Artwork/Critique since this board is only good for the formerthanks bro, you've finally helped me figure something out that i've been trying to figure out for a long time already
a lot of talented people come on /ic/ everyday. most of them lurk, but they also shit post like seaguls who ate too many doritos.
>>5224605>most of them lurkyea i figuredthat's why the advice on this board is generally shit because it's people who come here frequently because they procrastinate drawing rather than drawing when people who are actually good rarely come on here and post their drawings whenever they are in draw threads for that ez dopamineit took me a few years to figure that outgranted there is also misinformation tooi always wondered why there is always shit advice on here and nothing explicit when there are actually people who are pretty good that come on here and post their drawings but then i realized that they're never the ones giving critique because they're too busy drawing and would rather spend their time here posting their work every once in a whiledamn, makes me realize we need someone here who likes to teach but is good at drawing, not just one of thosethen the "Critique" part of this board would actually mean somethingi honestly hate that it says that because if it didn't, i would never have come herenow i'm here forever.....
>>5224617> advice on this board is generally shitwell you must have heard all the good advice becasue I'd have to disagree with you on that statement. theres plenty of good advice here. every once in a while theres some schizo, troll, asshole or dunning kreuger that will spew their "advice".Did you draw that?

Just posting this sketch to blow up steam, been focusing lately on lewd stuff, now i wanna do bloody-dark stuff
I'm trying to make a nsfw ryu pinup to revive one of my accounts, but I don't know if I should go for a less cartoony aesthetic or not, I personally like dots for eyes but probably it would be better to go for something more complex, also any input on what looks wrong is welcome, I'm overally not very good with realism
>>5223596>>5223487I only spent about 5 minutes on this but already you can see my lava looks much hotter than what you did. The problem with yours is you added too many mud colors into the lava thus diminishing the illusion of brightness. Things that are hot tend to follow a specific curve of hue and saturation which I tried to illustrate at the top.
>>5225141Is this bait? It’s worse.
>>5223470No
>>5225142You dont know how to paint hot things then.

>>5225141Looks a lot more like lava than what golden water lava guy did.>>5225142Post your lava.
>>5225142 it is a bit better, come on
>>5225132I can tell you draw a lot of heads but the line art for the body feels less confident. Study the way muscles on the arm join and overlap, you've got some overlapping incorrectly there, the shoulder onto bicep for example. Also the torso seems inaccurate, it's almost like too T shaped with the biceps and abs like an action figure would be, revise how these muscles kind of layer up in more of a V pattern. The legs are also very thin. Even on bulky dudes the way the hips cradle legs tends to be straight down, unlike the female pelvis that has them emerging out at more of an angle. Also Ryu would pack a lot more onto his legs, Also Ryu is japanese and wouldn't be circumcise, but ymmv on this.
>>5223965Cool Stuff>>5224045They look really good anon, I've been trying to learn Figure drawing too, So far Im only doing 5- 10 min studies while following vilppu courses. >>5223644>>5224431Basically what this anon says here. To add to that I think I can guess what you were going for with the lean back and a spear thrust coming underneath, but didn't commit enough to bending the character, and your arm placement seems unnecessary, like you got scared that it wasn't doing anything.
well there seems to be a parade of good artists posting here. wanna fill me in? this never happens by coincidence.

>>5225398am I part of the parade too?
>>5223638sweet rendering but this nigga got tiny ears

>>5225186You're getting there. I'd start doing 1m gestures whenever you want. Keep in mind the goal is very different from 5m studies because ther time is so short. I just focus on gesture and attitude, and simplified design of the pose. Skip the details.

>>5226937I’m not whoever uldis is frenI referenced this lol
>>5226940yours is more surprised and horrified than angry and despairing, even comparing to the wojak ref. i meant real refs
>>5226950Ah I see, thanks, I will do. Any other criticism?
>>5226953re your question to the other anon, you're trying to be very painterly with muh textures and it's the wrong approach if you want clean rendering in that sense. his drawing has very clean, tight line art and the render is much more stylized. look at the leather and the way the speculars are painted. the edges are very clean and decisive, at times basically cel-shaded if you look at the drapery. compare that to your shadows and edges and you'll see a very obvious difference. it's more of a style thing than anything dbh. terms of other critique it's a front on pink wojak head so maybe post some other work that's more critiqueable
>>5226972Thanks anon, do you think he’s using hard brushes most of the time? I came from heavy charcoal and pencil use before digital so these hard brushes are very jarring>>5226950I attempted a fix, bumped up values and desaturated shadows
>>5227022hard brushes most of the time with soft airbrush or potentially a soft smudge brush for large soft transitions like on the breasts and face. very little texture in the brushes, the material "texture" is largely implied by the light - how specular/reflective it is.
>>5223187I usually do linework but for the past month I've been forcing myself to color and now I'm stuck. How should I proceed?
How can I improve this?
>>5227022>>5226938okay so I use hard round with little bit of a pressure opacity, soft round with pressure opacity and little bit of grain texture, hard hexagonal with very little pressure opacity and couple of different textured brushes here and there. I think the solution to your problem is to think more about plane changes and edges, for example your wojak painting looks blury bcs edges and plane changes are too soft. You should use soft transitions where form changes slowly like on round objects and use hard transitions on sharp plane changes. You can achieve first 1) by soft brushes 2)by some textured brushes(like in your painting). You can achieve second by hard brushes or lasso tool. Also the more different values is the harder the edge looks. In my pic you can see most extreme version of that - line art. Sorry if this is a bit incoherent - I'm sleep deprived and still trying to grasp these concepts. I'm actually want to be more painterly with my stuff and rely less on lineart
>>5227515Maybe darker darks? I love the composition but I think it could use more contrast, maybe more trees on the horizon too.
>>5227515create some atmosphere, place something in the fore/midground and push back the rest with atmospheric perspective to imply some sort of scale, distance, wonder. maybe shine some light through those gaps in the clouds - we can see the sky, but not a single bit of light seems to be making it through to the ground?
>>5227515I’d have those rays peaking from the clouds hitting the distant mountains, that always looked kino to me.
Trying to get a composition down...
>>5228568this looks like too much effort for a composition sketch though. if it's composition you want to figure out, use thumbnails - keep it simple and loose, focus on the big shapes, explore different angles and perspectives and different figure placements, and then once you've settled on an idea or a few you like, commit time to developing the sketch. set some arbitrary time limit if you have to, make it so you have to move on to the next one after 2 minutes - do 10 or 20 of them, or more if the ideas are still coming and you havent found something that works. you don't need to hatch the whole thing while you're still solving this problem
>>5228664Gotcha, thanks.
>>5227209Remove that pointless eyeball it detracts from the piece and becomes an unnecessary focal point.
>>5224617I'm an old /ic fag here, when I sucked at art I would always be in the draw thread posting my work, giving shit advice and shitting on people. Lord knows I'm shameful of all of it, ill come on here every year or so just to see how things are going and drop one of my recent sketches, I'm a professional level artist with almost a decade of experience.I think its just the /ic right of passage since I started out on /b. Like any community, in order to fit in you've got to assimilate and adapt the behaviours of the community. It just so happens that most beginners here are beginners in life too. I'm 25 yrs old now and used to pop in and out of here throughout my late teens/early adulthood.I could sit here for an hour giving solid fundamental critiques, factoring in areas of improvement and starting a conversation but i wouldn't be getting paid for any of that. I would be getting paid doing freelance and nda stuff so that's where I invest my time. And regardless beginners can't even perceive or comprehend a solid critique unless you literally moved the pen for them, which is a protip; control is one of the least talked about fundamental aspects of ability that once properly understood opens up many doors for artist to improve fast, but here you just get tunnel visioned into Scott Robertson which is like a trial by fire - the stupidest thing to tell a beginner to doAlso don't bother asking me to post my art

>>5229241Very cool except the brushes you used have given it a weird 3D-without-the-glasses effect that’s giving me a headache, maybe stop using that split-stroke brush and crisp up some edgesForms could be a bit more volumetric, especially legs. I feel like without the string vignette and fade to black, the lighting is actually a little weak. Do some value studies and still lifes Also introduce some narrative elements next time so it’s not just a static character floating doing nothing. What’s the story? Where is it? What is it feeling? How does it relate to the viewer (is it a metaphor for something) etc
>>5230002B O O B A
>>5230326Anon, you’re gonna hate me for this, but you need to go and learn how to draw. I can tell immediately that you have used several crutches to mask it, I wouldn’t be surprised if I googled Boichi and found 3 pictures you’ve stitched together. It’s not the borrowing from another artist that lets this piece down, it’s your lack of basic drawing skill - the top part of the cranium and ears are foreshortened as if the skull is angled looking down, yet the mid face is directly perpendicular to the viewer and the mouth is even tilting up. If you saw this guy IRL he would be firmly in the uncanny valley, and probably have a profile like moonman. This crit is probably frustrating since you’re clearly skilled in linework and are developing good taste, but until you confront the element of perspective, form, learning 3D before anatomy etc, you will continue to make these mistakes and not be able to correct them, as well as forever rely on other artists’ work to stitch yours together.Pic related is a typical mangaka with an excellent grasp on form and 3D space, which is very common in nippon as they learn that stuff from day 1. A quote from toriyama goes something like “I get my students to construct all their drawings perfectly until, like me, they don’t need to anymore” Good luck anon, may the form be with you

>>5230804I don't hate you at all for it, it's the one time in recent memory someone has given me some decent advice. I'll try and do as you suggest, and look up 3D before anatomy, as I've never actually done any studying or been taught by anyone how to draw, I just freehand linework, without doing any presketching or any sort of techniques, and I really shouldn't anymore, because more often than not, I let myself down. Also, yes the picture is heavily inspired by Boichi, I have been trying to mimic his artwork for years (among a few other artists I like) in an attempt to incorporate the things I like about those styles into my own.
>>5231226Is that Michael Fassbender?

grayscale rendering pass for an art challenge
Having a tough time pushing my render forward from here.
>>5231806Yes, it is me, I made a mistake again, and? What do you think the point of practicing is for? Until I get shit nailed down...some times I draw something okay, sometimes I fuck it up, sometimes I draw a good looking face, sometimes I end up fucking up the perspective, this happens when you challenge yourself and try and draw shit unfamiliar to you, that you aren't comfortable with (ie: faces on all different angles)..in this particular case, I threw in a hand gesture too, it was all new to me, and it didn't quite work out, I'll get over it, and move on to attempt to draw something else, and try and learn from the experience.I also draw in many different styles, Boichi, Kenta Miura, Tetsuo Hara..even some western looking stuff, in the hopes that I'll eventually make some sort of amalgamation of the styles I like all rolled into one.

You don’t need to reach Kim Jung Gi levels of freehand perspective, just put in the hours nailing the basic ideas. The cool part about improving your 3D is that it is like a passive training for everything else too - your anatomy becomes way easier to learn and memorise, your lighting improves, you can create great compositions now you can control depth, sense of form and scale is easy, and linework becomes a game of simplification and foreshortening. I’m rooting for you anon as I love your style and influences. The hard truth is that you need to work really really hard to reach anything approaching your hero’s skill, but you absolutely can do it!
>>5231917Thanks mate, I'll give it a sus.>>5231927Thanks mate, I'll try and work on what you've suggested, I have neglected my art for many years now due to being In a bad marriage, and now that it has ended, I am trying to get back into the swing of things and rediscover my passion, so any suggestions and advice and critiques people have for me, is most welcome, as my art and skill level has stagnated, and even regressed in some areas, and I am trying to get my ass into gear, as I have a comic idea I've slowly plodded along with for more than 20 years, and want to do something with it one day.I'm assuming you meant this picture?, I plan to try and draw more pictures at that level of effort/execution in future, and start story boarding some comic ideas soon.
>>5230957I don't have a blog, sorry, I probably should, and actually take my art more seriously.
>>5231973Yeah, this rocks I’m glad you’re going to go hard on the art my man, there’s only one way - forward!Love that piece. Please level up your 3D brain so you can take it to the next level! Can you feel the form and depth in this piece? Aim for that kind of result and you will have a lot more control over your pieces and the comic will tell a story a lot clearer
where can i find beg art books for perspective or people
Drew this at work on a scrap of paper, in between phone calls.
>>5230007So uh.. nothing I need to change I'm assuming /ic/?
>>5223670I love this.
>>5224411Very cool how the O is both surrounded by ostriches and is also itself an orange. You could definitely see success I think if you finished it all.
>>5224617>>5224634Do you think she ever farted around her dad? hahah that would be so gross and weird haha do you think?
>>5225388Very cool. Got a Twitter or Instagram or whatever? Wanna see more of your stuff.
>>5225399Looks good, anon. No idea what the text says but I think this looks good.
>>5225640Fuck yeah. I love the ice breath coming out of the shield on the left one. Amazing.>>5226292Reminds me of Kruber from Vermintide 2. Post the finished version when you make it, I like it.>>5229241Looks like a Darkest Dungeon design. I like it.>>5230002Dad's bitchy new big booba girlfriend who hates his previous marriage kids/10.
>>5232191mmmm keep doing clothing studies, anatomy studies, figures studies, environments... and everything will take care of itself.
>>5231227How do you start these kinds of clean line studies? Are you putting foundations in pencil first?
>>5231811>Did you use the symmetry ruler on the faceNo,face was an afterthought, I just tried to do the soft/lost line practice on cloth and some reflective light. But my tism' kicked in and i had to finish it..poorly.Now that i think of it, I hate the piece lol, I should stop posting on /ic/

>>5232347your values are bad, you're using way too big a range to render everything and losing graphic shapes and weakening composition as a result. the faces are a mish mash of different styles, it's kind of jarring.
Just redesigning a character of mine. Probably a palate change to make her stand out a bit more, maybe get rid of some of the extra armor?

>>5229241God bless the great sow and her mummy milkersCurse any meat that would dare harm her.
Here's my most recent. It's not extremely good but better than 90% of what I see here. I'll be taking commissions soon, crabs be damned.
>>5232395You're really fucking good, man. Are these ideas from vidya or anime or original? The paper hands grabbing the chick is a cool idea.
>>5230777I can totally see where you're coming from with the brushstrokes, it took me a good look to understand where you're coming from but now I cant unsee it. do you ever feel like you go through phases where you can only sketch with one brush type? i'm kind of going through it right now with this split-hairs type brush, my last phase was hard square edged. Maybe it's just a schizo thing.Anyway once my studies are done i'll buff it out and polish it up so it has a little more solidity and bulk to it. As for the design and the frail legs, etc, it's just a bit of fan art, so I didn't spend any more time the surroundings. Again though i'll keep your observations in mind when I pick it up again later. Thank you anon.>>5232431"Remember; The Sow, (and her milkers), are our common good."for real though how uncomfortable were you when you stepped up to her and she started screaming>>5231226>>5231227i really like your markmaking, especially around the noses. Honestly pretty inspirational, very nice clean work anon
>>5232481>how uncomfortableAbout as comfortable as I was doing literally anything in that game. The amount of tension and uneasiness they were able to convey is a testament to their skills and understand of game design and storytelling.

>>5232258No, I just start with the pen, I usually begin by putting down a outline of the big shape of the head and then go into the features, being mindful of their relationship to the centerline of the face and to the rotation of the head.
Practicing drawing heads/skulls from imagination :/
>>5232503
just trying to figure out my rendering
>>5223187Made this today
>>5232437Would recommend to draw hand and feet in correct sizes for 2 weeks straight. At least 7 pair of hands and 7 pair of feet.
>>5232495Now be a lad and drop a blog so I can give a follow.
Working on this today. Something feels off with it but I’m not sure.
>>5232592Too uniform. When's the last time you saw clouds behave so perfectly and mirrored like that?

>>5232668thanks will try to make a complete illustration later
>>5230002That right eye looks like a 12y old drew it..
>>5232554Anon is a femoid who puts trigger warnings on her work, my friend. I followed her for a few weeks. Not worth it.
>>5231020Use paper that doesn't wrinkle. Otherwise very nice.
>>5233485You mean cold pressed cotton
>>5232503>>5232504Go away mdj
Rendering practice from imagination. Vilppu modelling tone. Adding a texture to my hrb let me make soft edges a lot easier.

>>5233390Well if it's all the same to you I wouldn't mind judging for myself if you would be kind enough to post a link friendo.
a lot of the stuff I see in this thread is appealing as hell. Good job, anons. Your works are beautiful.
does this count?
>>5233532Yes.
Anything I should fix?

>>5231226ThanksSo the line art is microns on mixed media paper, scanned and the colours are digital. I love your linework by the way. You have a really confident sense of when to leave negative space alongside linework, it's a really accomplished style of hatching.
this is what i drew today :>did 20 gestures in the morning toodrawing in the middle of the night is really funmaybe gonna do more
