Proko is an example in my mind of how not to train as an artist. He speedran the technical aspects and never cultivated his creativity. His original work is trash with no feeling and not even great technical skill. We must be different anons.
I know proko did that comic with the dogs that honestly really does not look that good, but what else he did? Also, I try getting out of my confort zone the best way I can, recently I learned thats a lot harder then you may imagine, I always did shading a exactly way and my shading never really improved beyond that, but when I started experimenting with other tools it was like an entire hidden world was open to me. So getting out of your comfort zone is a lot harder when you don't realize you have one.

exercise your creativity. do original projects even if your drawing skills suck. studying all the time without creating original artwork is a common pitfall that artists fall into. learning and mastering theory is one thing, applying it is a whole other problem.
Proko has his own style

Therefore its blandness is considered a virtue for teaching. I never understood these teachers who market their style as foundational because it assumes there is a normal process or style to drawing. I feel like the Watts style will suck out your soul. Listen to him teach and you will understand. It's like he's training you to become an obsessive neurotic artist. Huge focus on always making "beautiful lines", on never being "sloppy", he's constantly browbeating you with his mantras on line cleanliness and how bad it is to draw sloppily, etc, and when you go down that route and you really internalize what he's telling you then you end up making this technically solid but soulless art. The alternative is the path of Vilppu which will have you churning out tons of sloppy soulful art until you get good enough that you can tune up the sloppiness. If the soul isn't in the art at the beginning then it won't come later. You can always clean it up, become technically better, but I should be able to see the soul in the roughest draft of your drawing, and as you improve the drawing then you should be trying to maintain that soul that was in the initial scribble, not trying to develop it. You're never going to get soul from the Watts style. It's focused around making aesthetically nice images that are based 100% on using reference and never using imagination.

Watts is what you want if you want to take an actual picture of a pornstar, take all the eroticism out of it, and reproduce it to look an academic drawing/painting with the same pose, the same everything. That's what he's training you to do and he's good at it, but if you want to draw good art from imagination or without an intense reliance on reference then it's like going to a bakery and asking for spaghetti, it's not what he does

I notice a immediately degrade to chicken stratch lines in order to imitate Vilppu, but Vilppu knows exactly where he wants his lines to be. Any recommendations on things to look up on youtube? I tried to find his instruction manual, but I couldn't find any PDFs from a site I'd consider safe. Can only find physical copies of the manual which are expensive.

When you copy after an artost, and especially when it is after a teacher in the form of lectures, you take on a portion of their way of thinking and intuitions about drawing. You can tell when someone is studied under a certain teacher. Teachers give students the proper tools that are already developed to express the teacher's own art.
