What is /ALT/?
If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title. However, by community demand and long history, this is favorably an Anime general.
>Rules & Guidelines
(1) Any form of cartooning is welcome; so submit and receive feedback from others. (2) Please resize your images before posting. (3) Share your knowledge and (4) Remember to not be afraid of asking for critique. Most importantly I encourage you to keep discussion at a civil level, but you're more than welcome to share your opinions.
>I came for anime. Why does the image OP say cartoons general?
To distinguish from the anime study thread (janitor supported). Please post your studies there and personal work goes here.

I'd take another look at how you're constructing the head.
The face looks as if a fish-eye lens were focused on her (his?) left eye.
It also looks like the face isn't properly attached to the rest of the head, as if it were attached at an angle or something.

>>
>>5441575
Yeah I think you can construct things alright. Just adjust the ellipse that splits the cranium in two so that its even. It’s that the perspective of the hair implies that the head is turned closer towards the viewer than the face which makes the cranium seem skewed. The face itself is in alignment. Just move the back portion of the center ellipse towards the camera a bit so that it divides the cranium in half evenly.

here's my redline. i changed the likeness too much imo but hopefully this helps. i think the biggest issue you have is spherical cranium. remember to extend the volume in the back of the skull. the cranium has an egg shape not a spherical one.
>>
>>5441691
you're doing good too i just think you need to loosen up bit a get a hold on volume. maybe try animating some stuff to get a better idea of how to handle volumes.

So i'm really mad, bad and i know it, so i'm trying to improve. i know my body anatomy is terrible but one step at a time, i decided i need to start improving on heads. All my heads blend together into this similar shape, and i feel like they look awful unless i make the eyes big and cover the head in absurd amounts of hair. i want to be able to do more types of eyes, more types of hair, more types of head shapes. even in >>5444161

yeah then don't do that yet. you haven't even got your basic anatomy down. you cannot properly study/copy others if you don't understand the basic forms of the figures you're copying.

Seconding this. I’d add it’s best for beginners to focus on shapes to break the symbol habit. Drawing upside down is challenging even when you get better but it will help you break your habit of symbol drawing. KISS (keep it simple stupid) is timeless advice. Make all your shapes with C, S, or straight curves. Practice gesture and try to feel the natural flow of the curves. You can also copy patterns from nature like waves or lava rocks or even seaweed. It all has a rhythm and so do figures. Clothes, hair, fabric usually have a lot of rhythms especially in motion. You’ll start to see it everywhere.
Learning perspective and form is essential. It’s technical but there’s a lot on YouTube. Same with anatomy, proportions, etc. lots of material on YouTube, Pinterest, Twitter, etc.
As for books everyone recommends Loomis but I’d say that matessi’s force books are really beginner friendly and will help you with practical methods of quickly building figures and forms. Marco Bucci also has really good practical and thouroigh instructional videos. Hampton’s anatomy book and Lauricelli’s morpho books are also good but more advanced. Bridgman is amazing but old and cryptic so he’s definitely advanced. For anime propic x taco tutorials are some of my favorite. Propic has a book you don’t need it but it shows you in detail how different anime models are constructed and move. Finally make a Pinterest and save random art you like and check to see if it links to a Twitter or Instagram. Make sure to save images and build reference material to study from. Okay that was a lot but that’s my advice.

I'd say just observe why the garfield one is clearer than yours: More defined shapes and linework, and very importantly a difference in contrast between background and foreground, garfield and jon have warm saturated colors and stand out, the background is cool and less saturated.
>>
>>5447370
Change the brown segment at the bottom to a lighter color.
in the garfield comic you posted>>5447397
The characters stand out because their colors are more saturated and the hues are different from those of the environmental elements which are more uniform.

thank you for the feedback! I was looking at it and noticed how the purple framed the characters and the eye goes from the speech bubble, down to the tail, to Jon, and then to Garfield since they're grouped together by the light blue wall. I didn't realize how much went into this simple comic to make it clear.

I tried to increase the saturation of the characters, and desaturate the counter/background plus make the background cooler in hue. Now it looks very washed out. I think I need to come back to this later

thank you for the advice! i will probably just go with this version and call it done. i made the bg colors warm again because the kitchen setting it's based in is supposed to have warm colors and it felt weird making them cool. i used the hues from the oven and messed with the saturation a bit more, i hope it reads a little better?

I want to say there's slight cylindrical wrapping of the text on the forearm, but it gets increasingly flat as we go up. This is made worse by the completely blank palm - at the very least, put the single line that separates the meat at the base of the thumb.
Fingers are fucked and only have a single joint, this is a relatively easy angle to reference by looking at your own hands.
Also you need to go into your wardrobe and inspect your clothing to actually think about how it's made. Trims on the cloth don't really make physical sense. On the raised sleeve, the trim seems try some kind of french cuff and then stops short of the end, so it's impossible to tell if the trim goes all the way around the opening and the form is confusing. The main trim at the front of the knit takes a really awkward turn in that triangular region, and has no button/stitch/zipper explaining the sudden change in direction.
>>

In all honesty, I consider much of your artwork to be an acquired taste. It's very easy to see why some people would find it unappealing (subject matter and style)

With that being said, I wouldn't like someone with your level of technical prowess and incredibly unique style to give those things up in lieu of something more generic like anime for the sake of popularity. Every single one of your drawings feels like you have so much fun drawing, it's really really inspiring

yeah, the character on the right isn't quite in perspective properly, she looks like she's standing in a hole. maybe something like this would be better? her eye-level in your drawing is at about the same height as the middle of the doors, which would mean she should be crouching like the other girl in the back. I think there's a page about this sort of problem in one of the Loomis books, actually

Working on yet another sketch, probably won't bother inking this one, it's just a bit of a warm-up.

I've come to realise a desire for some nice coloured pencils and darker paper (what is it even called?), so I can use white and bright colours for highlights and add some more depth to my traditional drawings, and I need to get a tablet and expand into digital...I've allowed a rut that's gone on for years to stagnate myself, and I'm a bit bored of just grinding out different manga styles.

I'm working on this for a charity webcomic calendar. The girl is a selkie, that's why she has webbed hands. All critique and advice is appreciated. What is the best way to draw sea foam and make it look like her body is wet?
I haven't drawn the hair in yet.

without changing the drawing too much, you could crop at the legs, add a background, increase contrast, mess with the colour balance, add some rimlight, gaussian blur, and a noise filter

This all has the same bland tone. Add shadows to create a more contrasting image.
Hair isn't rendered out but the clothes are. Horns look like rubber because of your highlights.
Jaw is deformed. Your anatomy is lacking. Her torso is just a rectangle.
This also lacks dimension because of the flat shading you have.

Where do people get backgrounds like this from? Is it photos you take, public domain photos, or just any random photo you take from google?

There is nothing i hate more than those commercials with the moron guy and the woman who is infallible and you know she is going to school him and get the last laugh in the final 4s.

It’s an inside joke, she is supposed to clean the kitchen while i am cooking. We yell “PLEASE HELP” at each other to be annoying.

> "quirky relationship comics"
Actually, you are probably the wrong person to ask, but does anyone know of any slice of life comics that dont make you want to vomit from the saccharine?

I can only find ones where the husband brings the wife snacks while she is working and kisses her head and all that gushy bile.

I want some grungy comic where they antagonize each other and do gross funny stuff
