IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.

Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the Drawthread with fundamental exercises.

POST DRAWINGS YOU NEED HELP WITH.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS using one of the following methods:

>1. screenshot the image and post that instead

>2. change camera capture settings to something smaller

>3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

CONSIDER READING THE FOLLOWING: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Same with drawing/painting from reference images compared to real life.

if you have plans to be a digital artist start with digital. It will save you time from having to readjust from paper to digital. It will be hard if you have never used a tablet even more so if you don't know how to draw but it's completely doable.

>>
>>5619284
Nah, i started with digital and i'm doing pretty fine, at first it feels like playing an ice level in a videogame, but then the whole thing is always ice so you get used to it, it feels weird drawing on paper for me now but i don't have any plans on doing trad stuff so there's no issue there if you're the same.
>>
>>5619438
SO the issue is because its too smooth?
Dont those screen protectors help with that?
>>
>>5619444
Writing on a screen will never be the same as doing it on paper, your pen will never be as sharp as normal pencil, it's certainly different and hard to get used to at the beginning, but after 1 month you'll be fine.

I would keep looking for a scimitar/curved sword reference pic. It's a pretty tough angle to use a curved sword. My instinct says it should look bigger because of the angle he's holding the sword. But if I were you I would just take a picture of myself holding a curved sword/cardboard cutout of a curved sword
>>
>>5619199
not the same anon, but you can "draw" anything "simple", it will just look awful, because you don't and won't understand shit. does not take years to sit down and study every once in a while, you can rotate between that and your regular work.
i swear, people who go out of their way to shut down legitimate critique/advice in the name of being "anti-crab" are becoming just as bad as the actual crabs in some cases - both types stifle the growth of beginners and that's quite sad.

I have decided to coin the term "sea turtle" (or "turtle" for short) to refer to /ic/ users who falsely accuse anons who give legitimate criticism/advice/questions to themselves or others of being "crabs" (that is, exhibiting the crab mentality) while ironically fostering the same effect of stagnation by attempting to negate critique, slowing down the progress of other artists (or again, themselves)
From some scattered research, among other species, sea turtles are one of the natural predators of the crab. Additionally, I like to think that the turtle's slowness on land is somewhat of a metaphor for a failure to adapt past a certain comfort zone (the surface level sea)
Note that this term does not refer to people calling out actual crabs. Just the ones who think EVERYONE is crabbing if they are being the slightest bit harsh.

So I'm starting KTD and having a problem with the internal dialogue section. I'm what you'd call an NPC at /pol/, someone who lives without an internal monologue. That's why I neither have a critical nor practical dialogue in my head as I draw. How many of you actually speak in your mind as you sketch? How important is this factor in drawing rather than drawing from pure intuition?
>>
>>5620030
What do you mean? Are you not thinking about what you're drawing at all? Do you just happen to sketch poses instead of actively meaning to?
>>
>>5620034
I draw in a meditative state, with no internal dialogue. That's why I can't do what KTD asks you to do, by questioning each part's length. It's all intuitive and they turn out pretty good even then. I need to know how important dialogue is to get to the next level and how many of you use it.
>>
>>5619426

Yeah I'm downloading Vilppu videos right now and going to study it. Hopefully Vilppu lectures teach me how to feel the form. Unfortunately his style doesn't seem to be what I'm aiming for, broad thin unspecific strokes making up the body without clean lines. Sometimes he's missing a neck too, I tried turning one of his gestures into a full body and it didn't work because it was missing a neck. I'm still not sure why people call him a god, gotta spend some time with him I guess.

Where are my colours worst? It's hair isn't it?
>>

Yeah, you should desaturate the hair. But FIRST, you should deepen/separate your values, muddy paintings only happen because of your values, not so much colour.
Add cast shadows in as well, it will read a lot better and don't be too afraid of wrinkles in your cloth.
>>
>>5620894
So for example I should add clear shadow behind shield, right? And end goal is adding more range to values so that picture becomes more readable?

>can anyone help with shadows plz?
I'm still a /beg/ so take it with a grain of salt, but I locate the light sources in (or outside of) my image, then draw guiding lines for the direction the light is travelling, and where it intersects a surface, that should most likely have a shadow on. You've got a fireball, so I assume that should be casting shadows. I dunno, though. Starting point maybe.
>>
>>5621880
the clouds are too soft, make the colour slightly less muddy, and the characters are also too muddy, you see how that guy's spell is orange ? well try to make the guy orange, i mean it. if the colours dont pop it's gonna look muddy and dirty, add a glow layer and use that if you want, and the water does look unnaturally perfect, try to look up reference of oceans at night, actually i recommend taking reference for each part of the painting, a reference of plains in the dark, a night sky with clouds, and an ocean at night, BUT basically, make the darks darker and the lights lighter, i know it's completely unrelated but look at picrel, the values have a shitton of contrast, the darkest black is super dark, and the lightest white is super white, watch some tutorials about values too

Next time when you paint a new piece, think about what your focus is in your painting before you begin. the monster fight really looks like it was plopped randomly right into the painting for no reason.
Here are some quick thumbnail sketches I did to show you what I mean.
>>
>>5621856
You should think more about composition. Right now your background takes about 80% of image but it serves no purpose.
Pose is very stiff, it looks like the man catches a cab, and definitely not like fighting for his life. Also drawing both people in side view feels very unnatural, add some perspective.

That’s exactly what I did lol, I was just painting a landscape and put one tentacle and ended up making the whole scene like that, I think your %100 right and I might take the time to make it more battle scene and start the whole thing over again with all the feed back from everyone, this is month two of learning to paint draw and photo bash and I think somthing a bit out of my perspective comfort zone would really teach me a bunch of lessons.

So I’ll make the whole thing sharper

Do a greyscale mock-up of the whole scene before committing to a final lay out

Blend less

Make the scene more emotionally charged (I’ll photo bash myself and my girlfriend into it to get a perfect pose)

And make the fireball a masive light source

I’ll be back in a couple days

You guys are awesome! Thanks for pumping me up

Somebody please help. I just cannot understand heads at all. I've been studying Loomis for a while, and now I feel like I'm just sat here randomly sketching things without any rhyme or reason. I try and follow it, and I don't know why but nothing comes out 'right'. Is there some other head technique that made it 'click' for you? Something you did that made you finally understand how heads are composed and move?
>>
>>5622025
Spend at least 10 minutes going through the details of a reference and drawing it side by side using loomis, just try harder and expect to fail upwards, those sketches suck because your holding back from potential failure. That being said I do much different art that what it seems your trying to do

Have you tried drawing spheres? Do that first, and use them to buid a head. You want to be able to make a circle look 3D by adding contour lines.

You've drawn flat mask faces. IIRC spheres are the first thing Loomis gets you to draw. Did you skip ahead?

>>drawabox lesson 1 "lines" and "ellipses" chapters/exercises; these will help you control your hand better, learn how to draw from your shoulder, draw perfect circles, and generally set you up to follow the rest of the resources effectively. hold off on completing the rest of the chapters until later, they take forever and are not immediately important
>>keys to drawing; this will teach you how to accurately copy from observation/reference and unlearn symbol drawing, which will fuck with every mark you make until you undo it. after you are done with the book, start copying things from photographs, 1-to-1, exactly how you eyes see the lines and shapes, no matter what your brain thinks is "correct."
>>fun with a pencil (loomis); this will introduce you to the concept of construction, which will be very important later
actually read the big sticky btw, it is helpful

I feel like people recommend trad mostly because the softwares always feel overwhelming for begs. Unless you start with a screen tablet, trad will always be more forgiving because you can trace the image directly instead of looking at the screen without seeing your hand movements. Just go slow and look at youtube tutorials, and get a simple software instead of going for clustered stuff.

I hold my pencil like pic related and I keep seeing people refer to the “dynamic tripod” grip as the right way to hold a pencil. Is it worth the effort to try to change the way I hold my pencil

Got a question about drawing speed. I've started in on keys to drawing and done the first couple exercises, the times he says to allow for them are pretty ridiculous. Like, how is it possible for me to take 20 minutes to draw my giga beg green pepper from memory? Each of these seems to take about half as long as he says. Am i fucking up somehow? I feel like if i persist any longer im going to just be making shit up to fill time.

My dude you are not studying shit. Spend some time learning how to learn. You are not even using the Loomis prescribed proportions. Stop bitching and get back to hitting the books. Start with Fun With a Pencil before trying to figure out heads. 4W8MS

Also stop fucking symbol drawing
