RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS using one of the following methods:

Why can't I learn with painting instead of lineart?
How do you guys decide what to draw? I want to get good, but don't enjoy practicing. I will force myself to do it, but I have nothing to aim for.
>>
>>5623422
think about what is it that attracted you to drawing in the first place
>>
>>5623428
Game development, art can look like anything. Better when it's uniquely identifiable and doesn't suck.
>>

Give up on that dream.
1. you don't have the patience to use paint

Usually comic book characters, or sometimes I'll listen to music to have ideas

can someone tell me in what order you actually are supposed to draw?

I'm totally beg and I feel like I don't understand what to even study, it all feels so disconnected.

Does this make sense?

1. draw gesture lines
2. draw center line
3. determine scale of shapes by guideline markings along the center line, i.e marking thirds or fourths from the top to the bottom of a shape
4. draw outlines of the shapes, big to small
5. draw construction lines within the shapes to ease placement of features
6. draw features
7. add shadows
8. erase construction/center/gesture lines

>>
>>5624018
>>5624025
it does depend a bit on the paper, but not entirely.

generally speaking, first, you want to grip the pencil a little farther back so it's easier not to go too dark and is a little more consistent. then you want to work in circles. this helps to prevent your shadow from looking like it's implying a direction (this is esp important because if the direction isn't cross contour then it flattens your object)
>>
>>5624047
there are a few inconsistencies with your light source. it's like you couldn't decide where to place your light source vertically.
I'd say there should be more light hitting the right lower eyelid, the chin, the bottom lip. and less hitting the bottom of the nose.

I'd work on getting the proportions closer to your reference for future studies. Also, try to squint and get down the big shapes of value first, it will help you define form better and see any mistakes quicker.
I know the redline is digital, but you can apply it to trad.

>Why can't I learn with painting instead of lineart?
you can if you want, but you best learn the fundamentals in any case
>How do you guys decide what to draw? I want to get good, but don't enjoy practicing. I will force myself to do it, but I have nothing to aim for.
I'm not going to lie, why are you forcing yourself to do anything if you have no idea what you are trying to achieve? Why do you want to draw?
Think of a dream project, something you care about and absolutely have to work towards. From there, the general issue of "deciding what to draw" and motivation should usually come automatically.

I’ve been beg since 1st grade because I got stuck in a style that I developed and I hated and never actually improved but I want to change that
But I’m wondering is it bad to lay down many lines in your sketches as you try to figure out where you want things? Proko seems to think so but I see people drawing like that all the time and not holding their pencil sideways like Proko does

I acknowledge that drawing short fuzzy lines to make one full line looks like shit and that isn’t what I’m talking about but what if I lay down like 7 actual lines before I feel like I can move on to the next ones because I was looking for a certain line I like and wasn’t happy with the initial ones?

Maybe there's something to learn here. Kept the head shape and nose, and changed eyes, and mouth position, tried to make the big planes (front, top, and side) a little more obvious. I think there's something up with your center line, like there is too much face on the far side, while the other side is eating into the side plane of the head, pushing back the ear and jawline to the back of the cranium.

Have an EXACT vision of what you want to draw. You need to be able to see it, feel it, hear it, taste it, smell it, etc. in your head.
If you don't have that yet, get or make a lot of references until you can. A lot of people try to draw without having a specific enough goal in mind and get frustrated that things don't look right. Do some exploratory sketching and visual brainstorming to get the mental wheels spinning if that helps you along the way.

There are a lot of more obscure titles with good-looking art and designs in general I would like to be able to replicate, so I don't know what you're referring to an example of lower quality manga. Are you mainly referring to isekai light novel adapatations and most weekly stuff? I tend to avoid those so yes, I don't have much example of especially bad art other than AOT and webcomic OPM

Started the Vilppu lectures last night, watched the first and second chapters about gestures and spherical form. What I learned from these lectures is that gestures can be made from two different lines, one a half circle and another a wavy curve aka the transition line. With these two lines a gesture can be made and shown with movement. I am going to be studying Vilppu for the next month to improve my anatomy and gestures and this is my first sketch. Can anyone critique? Preferably someone who went through the same thing.

Vilppu is supposed to be a god at anatomy, so let's see where he takes me in one month's time.

the anatomy is all over the place. The arms a bit too long, elbows should be around the bellybutton and the hands should be around the crotch area. The hip area you drew is too thin, when drawing men think of rectangle shape for the torso and hip when drawing woman think of an hourglass shape. The legs are off as well.
>>
>>5625739
Sure but what you described is sort of just the average dude, i did my best trying to draw from the ref picrel, the guy is definitely not average, i did mess up the arms a little but the hip is very curved that's why

Tracing can help with line confidence and learning how to build shapes with various strokes.

To get anything worthwhile out of it you need to use construction to deconstruct the shapes that makeup the model, then try to rebuild the image from scratch using only your construction. From there you can gather shapes and anatomy you are overlooking and missing.

I LOVE THIS BOOK!
It likens drawing to an MMORPG, it says as you become more advanced in drawing you turn skills from active to passive skills and keep increasing your skillset like an RPG character.

It also says talent is a myth, that all drawing is learned. Anatomy is learned, faces are learned, and time and practice to put into your passive skillset so that you can do it while picking your nose. Amazing. I am going to study this for a year and nothing else, not even loomis, and see how I go. See you in a year!

the face, hands and feet. The face is too squish/ big forehead, try and move the eyes a bit higher. The two hands are different size, the approach is correct just need more hand practices. The same with the feet more practices.
