how do you develop a drawing from a sillhouette? Sounds counterintuitive.
>>
everything we draw consists of silhouettes, I'm just experimenting to see how far you can go and in my experience you can go pretty far.
You basically need to have the drawing done in your head though, it's tough to experiment unless you're just doing random shapes

the only way to break even off of this meme pencil is to use giant drafting paper. there's absolutely no point to using it on 8.5*11, and in fact I basically never touched it since buying it. the lines are too thick. I used an ordinary tru red wooden pencil and an electric pencil sharpener.

I didn't use this eraser either, probably because the rubber doesn't shear off and it ends up darkening the values, which may be the point. Anyway, there are only eight edges on a bar eraser, the edge/corner to volume ratio is fucked up.

You aren't really doing silhouettes you are doing contour drawing.
Silhouette drawing is what concept artists and character designers do to quickly find new shapes they wouldn't usually draw.
The contour drawing you are doing depends on your visual library and memory drawing so you are unlikely to generate new ideas.
>>
>>5667720
I think there are 2 biggest weak spots.
>1. beak
The rest has bolder brush strokes, meanwhile on the beak you can just see how you shrunk down the size of your brush and started diddling there. It really pops out to me.
>2. neck/jacket collar
Place where neck ends and jacket begins (below the beak), doesn't look good.
It's really flat, plus the way it smoothly blends into the jacket doesn't seem right, plus it also blends with the background too much. I think those feathers should be harder.

I think there's also something wrong with the sleeves. Like the wrinkles are almost correct, but the shading is too sharp maybe? I'm not sure, this is really tricky type of fold to shade without making it look weird.

Overall it looks very nice. It has a very cool mood with those sharper shadows and soft highlights in darker parts.
The torso part of the jacket really makes you feel its volume with those flaps in the front of the chicken man.
>>
>>5667847
Thanks for you reply, is really useful.

I'm gonna work on the beak I don't want it to be too much of a focus point, also the head is supposed to be a mask that's why I made the cut to the jacket a little cleaner, but I'll have in mind what you said and try to work some more on it.
>>
>>5667720
It has an overall muddy rendering. Your painting lacks texture so every material looks the same. If you want to kick up your art level to the next step I would recommend practicing rendering different types of texture.

So I'm just a guy who has been drawing for fun since childhood (I'm 19 now) and the only time I did studies was when I learned the very basics of loomis head, which happened long time ago. I try to use references though. Anyway, where do I start with studies now? And is it even worth it or should I just accept being spoiled ngmi with lots of bad habits formed from drawing from imagination most of the time?
My preferred way of drawing is using ink by the way and I almost never color my works, which I'd like to fix too eventually.
>>
>>5669849
Anon, you're 19. That's so young - don't worry about it. If I could go back 11 years and talk to my 19 year old self, I would say "stop playing CS and draw every day and don't stop." I'm getting back to practicing and studying art in earnest now, but I was only a little better than you at 19. You can definitely make it.
>>
>>5669849
>>5669853
And I would say brush up on perspective and start going through a course on figure drawing. I recommend Steve Huston or Vilppu - go check the video thread >>5647161
>>
>>5669858
I never really studied perspective; I did try to follow Scott Robertson's book but got put off by complexity of grids(maybe they get better with practice but it felt like aids back then) and just been rolling with "feeling" of perspective since then. What would be a good way to start properly learning perspective from this point? I've heard that "Perspective made easy*" is good but haven't had the time to read it yet.
>>
>>5669881
Perspective made easy is a good start. Framed Perspective Vols. 1 and 2 is also good. You don't need to spend too much time on it, I would practice 2 and 3 point perspective (1 point is pretty simple). Perspective is something you can revisit from time to time, but I think at least having a solid understanding will pay dividends. I personally don't like Robertson much either, but it's helpful as a reference.

Color and lighting schemes are cool. I'd checks the shape of the skull, looks a bit off on the right side (her left). You could probably give it another 1-2h rendering to finish some edges and the hair.

>>5670796
The first one is the best. Your other poses are a bit wonky (especially 4th one). You'd have an easier time giving her an interesting pose if the canvas was landscape, you know, like a TV.

>>5671528
It looks fine. The fact she is lit uniformly and that you use either super sharp edge or massive airbrushes gives the rendering an artificial look.

put more colours in your colours, the darker areas will stand out with better occlusion, so if you put more pink around where you want the lightest parts of the cheek, or more orand in the middle of the hair the darker areas will be darker by default.

the same thing you did in the neck you can apply to all of the other colours, then if you dont like how bright it is you can just do a new layer of a lower opacity and a darker colour over if you want to do it "manually" or just post process it to fuck

even though his left arm is not raised he's still pushing his left shoulder back. you can tell because the left side of the trapezius is flexed, and because we're seeing his torso slightly from below we can see the left scapula raised almost as far as the right one

Hi I'm hoping to get a little advice as I think I'm a decent painter, but I want to get into painting people. namely women, and I'm interested in the semi airbrushed but still hard edge style that seems so popular these days. What would you say is a good thing to study to pursue these types of pieces?

Ill reply to myself with some examples.

I can also say that my drawing skills are not super great, and I struggle to draw human faces in general but it seems that painting a face is more about proportion and rendering, then line work. Anyhoo ty for reading my blog.
>>
>>5689913
A realistic goal I'd like to reach is artwork like this.

Also artwork such as that made by NatTheLich,

Basically not hyper realism, but you get the idea. Any advice on pursuing these? Studying the paintings themselves helps but im more so interested if I should just do asari heads for 10 hours or something crazy.

Here's some painting practice. Don't like how the wrinkle details came out. Looks like just a bunch of lines instead of creases where light can't enter.
>>
>>5691604

Well, yeah. You drew them as lines. Still, it looks good. You're a true artist here, turkey heads are revolting and this looks beautiful.

Can someone help me figure out lighting here? Especially index and middle finger? It feels more flat there

You seemed to deviate from the reference a bit, maybe like this is more accurate?
>>
>>5693296
thanks for the feedback!
I knew something was off while drawing it but I just couldnt figure out exactly what it was
>>
>>5693352

When this happens, you can trace your drawing and the ref and superimpose them, that'll show you exactly what's off.
>>
>>5693352
No worries i liked the ref so i figured i try
The main takeways I noticed were
the head to needs taper in more and bring the ear,jaw and neck inwards a bit. you had too much space between the outer contours and some of features.
you also made his irises+pupils slightly different sizes and made him look at us instead of looking off into the distance slightly left of the camera
other than that, good work with the values

I think both of you guys missed that his nose has actually been placed out of perspective with respect to the rest of his face. Consider using some of the other landmarks in the reference to help you place the features in the future. For example, in the reference the tip of his nose is fully to the left of his philtrum. Noticing that helped me figure out how much it should be turned to fit with his head.

I actually noticed the things with the nose after I posted it, but figured it worked well enough to not have to try and repaint it. You did even better making the inner forms even more accurate to the photo, good job.
>>
>>
That's a pretty big foot, even with the boot covering it The upper torso seems to be posed in a nice way but the way you spread his legs looks awkward and stiff
The way you drew the cloth on his arms seems ambiguous both in terms of what exactly the perspective is and where the force is being applied. I can tell where everything is kinda supposed to go only because of the sketch lines underneath.

self portrait in oil : |
in terms of color theory my general formula is:

Your favorite color as main color + a cool/warm opposite (so if you like green, a cool, pick some warm as an accent)

then add grays/blacks /whites by mixing your favorite and the opposite

If gray is your favorite, accent with pink or teal i suppose? just experiment honestly, let stuff bleed into each other (I'm speaking to both digital and traditional)

and stretch colors, like if you stumble upon an interesting color from a mixture of opacities, color pick it if digital and try to mix more if traditional and expand on it.

Color is like, the one area where you can really be creative, no matter the subject. Pink miku with golden hair and turquiose socks? who cares!

what's the deal with those tiny magenta strokes?
I've seen something similar in Hades, and thought it might be graphic bug, but it seems to be a conscious decision?
>>
>>5696912
idk I use magenta as way to lighten the skin a little. In this case I think they're just adding it as an accent colour to balance out all the dull colours used for this piece
