Weird question, but this is from a hobbyist artist, are there people on this Drawpile server that are willing to trade fundies together? Ex: How to do Loomis construction etc? Or is it just more like "Just Draw, dudeski"?

Generally curious.

It's more about hanging out and drawing, no one is there to instruct anybody but tips are perhaps shared casually here and there. You're welcome to come in and observe if you don't feel comfortable drawing but don't expect anyone to hold your hand in that way necessarily.

Anyone else have weird issues with drawpile? I wanna set zooming to the scroll wheel, but it doesn't look like there's an option to do that. Also sometimes Drawpile just randomly throws out my preference settings and resets everything. I wanna draw with you guys but Drawpile is constantly a piece of shit
>>
>>5700376
Looks like you can set shortcuts in preferences, the zoom option is at the bottom. It doesn't seem like you can set it to the scroll wheel but I'm not certain why you'd want to when you've got a whole keyboard to choose from. That said, Drawpile does have a lot of problems but it's unironically the best option for group drawing at present. Every annoyance or limitation it has is magnified six-gorillionfold on other programs as far as I've seen.
>>
>>5700376
Oh also I don't know what I did but I can no longer drag with spacebar. Middle mouse works but that's it. I don't know what I did or how to change it back
>>
>>5700387
Admittedly I'm not sure. If you were messing around with the shortcuts and may have overwritten the existing shortcut that would be my first guess and where I'd look but otherwise I'm not certain.
>>
>>5700376
I thought the scroll wheel was set to zoom by default? I use it sometimes. I think it might have only worked when my mouse was on the canvas space?
When it comes to the reset preferences thing, maybe try a fresh install? Drawpile normally saves your last used tools and brushes so it's weird that it's doing that. I'm sorry you're having these problems, I wish I could help you more.
>>
>>5700418
Oh, I just realized yeah if you hold control and use the scroll wheel that's zoom in and out, the default is scrolling the canvas up and down.

One of the best free resources I'm aware of is the NKU drawing database on youtube, it's a college professor's entire drawing course. He might not be Vilppu or some other modern master/meme artist but he's certainly good enough to teach the basics-including perspective.

Lots of good stuff already posted and it's just monday, we will make multiple canvases as needed depending on both the file size (Drawpile starts becoming unstable as the file size increases) and real estate on the canvas (obviously people need room to draw!); do be mindful of others and consider that you can draw quite small without losing too much-if any-quality, though! Thanks everybody for participating!

Also sorry about the horrifically short forearm on the big titty girl I'll fix it.
>>
>>5702749
No worries, I'm going to check with the host and see if we can set up an auto-reset for the weekday sessions in case a mod isn't around for extended periods of time. The only problem with this is that if you are unlucky enough to be "moving" a drawing when the session reset pops off bad shit can happen. A few people have lost some work over the years because of it but it is pretty rare (I think it happened <5 times in as many years)-also that may have been fixed in one of the several updates that have happened since I'd last seen it had occurred (but I wouldn't count on that).

Take all the time you want to draw. Some people draw faster than others, but that just comes with experience. Personally, practicing drawn rp, comics, and hand drawn animation helped me speed up my process. But you go as fast as you want. Everyone is different and you don't need to feel self conscious about it. Just draw.

Everyone loves when there's more people drawing. And the more you use and experiment with the program, the easier it'll be.
>>
>>5707914
thanks... i don't really have much an issue with drawpile itself but drawing in social environments. i just get too self-concious and try to decide what to draw, how im going to construct, etc etc
just overthinking it too much
>>
>>5707916
Everyone has different ways they approach their construction. Not everything someone draws will be good. Even the really good artist draw silly bad things. It's just a part of the process and a part of learning. Everyone goes through it and everyone is at different levels of efficiency. As you grow more familiar with a method of work, you can then further simplify your processes. There's no shame in being at an earlier step in the process than someone else and all art is appreciated on the board. Everyone has their own little style quirks and yeah I'm speaking for myself here, but I love seeing other people draw. No matter what their skill level is, I enjoy it and think there's value in it. There's value in your work anon and I hope you manage to climb even higher than you are now. Good luck friend. You can make it.

Do you rely on references a lot or do you just have a killer imagination from drawing six gorillion hours a day?

413 KB
413 KB PNG
>>5722184
I didn't draw >>5719875

I don't use references nearly as often as I should... I like to go through my large collection of inspirational content I've saved up over the years though. I'll look for maybe a vibe or a way an artist lit a scene or some composition or something will stick out... Then I see if I can get a similar vibe. Sometimes I just get that spark of inspiration for a scene and I forget the inspiration picture is even there and I go waaaaay off course kek.
But even then I don't do that very often unless I'm really out of ideas to draw and need a refresher. Most of the time I'm kinda just laying out forms or lines of action and seeing if I can work off of any of them. Little thumbnails are nice too.
I scrap a ton of little things all the time...
And I'm kinda always studying and thinking about how I'd draw things IRL...

... Uhh I guess it's a lot of imagination? Trial and error? References as needed?
>>
>>5722201
nta but wanted to ask, has it always been that way for you? have you always been able to rely on your imagination to create your pieces?
>>
File: road.png (40 KB, 390x980)
40 KB
40 KB PNG
>>5722210
Not at all. My mental visualization is (was? Idk) actually kinda poor. I have to rely on basic shapes and silhouettes and a lot of trial and error when I draw partially because I need to actually see something in front of me. It was waaay worse when I started. I relied on references a LOT. I was even one of those nerds that traced anime and manga as a kid. I don't think my imagination was really all that great...
I think what really helped was drawing every day though. I grew up being told to draw a little every day to get better. No matter how small or imperfect, I just had to draw. Just create. The more I drew, the more shapes and patterns I could recognize. I experimented a ton too because what else am I gonna do? There's no way I could draw the same studies every day... I really think it helped me on a lot of levels.

idk if that really answered your question... I'm not really sure just how much of my imagination I've really relied on and how much of it is just memory/muscle memory...
>>
>>5722235
yeah I guess it helps, so far I've been drawing seriously for almost 2 years on and off, but I still struggle with drawing bodies and poses, heads is pretty easy there are limited angles that look good, but bodies I don't know, they're so complicated, even with reference I can't get them to look good, I guess I will keep trying new things I hope at some point I will come up with a way that I can draw bodies as easy as I can draw heads, thanks for replying I love your drawings
>>
>>5722201
Oh sorry, I knew you didn't draw that I was actually gonna preface that post with a general complement and then ended up making a more direct statement/question (if you are reading this though other anon just know that you're appreciated as well!)

Ok I'm sorry this is a mess and this is a few months old so uhh take it with a grain of salt please. There are things on image related I think I could have expressed a lot better, but I was kinda just doing whatever came to mind real quick for some friends, but it's the best example I have atm...

I think the bean section might help? One of my ways to warm up/study was drawing a bunch of beans... And then treating those beans like torsos. And from there I would evolve the bean shape a little bit as I grew and understood the form more.
Just like draw a ton of bean-like shapes. Then add a circle for a head somewhere. Boom you got some bodies going toss some limbs on there!
Though nowadays I just get a thick brush and do mini silhouettes. Kinda like you see in the top left of >>5719946. I still kinda do bean torsos for those too, and they let me practice keeping the poses readable.
I dunno it might help maybe
One of these days I'll sit down and properly make tutorials with a clear focus and goal......
>>5722259
Oh it's cool! Thank you for the question still. It's nice to do a little bit of thunkin.
>>5719875

We get a mixture of people from both sides of the atlantic. Activity usually peaks about two to four hours ago, whatever that is in general terms. At this time it'll be dying down, but today there are still seven people on. I think most of the people who come are either American or chronic night owls. Whoops! By process of elimination I can only assume it's this masterpiece here.

This might be a good opportunity to mention to any passersby that text needs to be rasterized in order to appear in the final capture. For that to happen, you need to click the Merge button in the text tool window. The mod who clears the canvas may or may not bother or remember to do this, so if you want something to be included it's always safest to do so yourself.

Thanks for taking the time to let me know, my friend!
For drawing the inviting lady I referernced a pencil sketch I did during a sort of small online-drawing event last year which tried to bridge lockdown measures by doing semi regular lifedrawing sessions via zoom call. So basically I referenced a referenced drawing? lol
I find that my ideas brain goes into energy saving mode when I am drawing digitally. So it helps looking at traditional stuff I did I guess.
when I decided to try and color it, I referenced an old pinup I found appealing.
And for wings I did a quick online search for 'butterfly' ;)

The jug started as a kind of collective shading/colorizing study lesson
>>
>>5745463
>>5745229
forgot to mention that I dont think the wings are making a particularly matching impression. I would like the shading to be more fitting so they dont seem like a second drawing attached to another (which they technically are), but I dont know enough about coloring to really do it - or at least I know little enough so it seemed really wearisome and kinda offputting to experiment. Especially since drawpile colors seem to be doing unpredictable stuff when working with transparencies and there apparently not really being an option to use blending modes across layers. Its probable that I am just confused and stuff is easy/nicely doable. - I am just saying that I dont know any better and that this is what led to the results above.
