perma-beg here. im just getting back into it. i wanna get good at front view drawings/portraits.>quick explanation.i was copying this skull. i started at top. and alternated to "imagination". it's a training exercise i learned about from jason brubaker.-i feel one of my weaknesses is that my drawings always slant to the left "\"-also have a tendency to get too stylized/cartoony. really bad habit. i hate drawing realism, but i know it's the most important thing.-also have an issue taking too long on a drawing, i blaze through these and get too impatient if it's taking too longthanks for any help /beg/
>>5679096Draw a Box dude said to be fast and loose like a Japanese Samurai, are you not fast and loose? Guess I'll try the timed gesture drawings, thanks.
>>5679086I have what can be best described as a mental library of shapes that I use on a constant basis, but the big thing is that EVERYTHING has an anchor line, regardless of whether or not you actually draw it. In this instance, it's the main ridge line in the middle, which defines the ENTIRE perspective of the shape. The bottom plate I usually use the ribcage lines as the guide for it's placement, but I can also use the ridge line to figure it out if I have nothing else to look at.
>>5679028I NEED A FUCKING CRITIQUE GOD FUCKING DAMNITI HAVE POSTED THIS MANY TIMES THIS AND I DON'T GET A CRIT, WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU ALL?I HAD PATIENCE.
>>5679114Oh anchor line, that's an interesting concept. Thank you for the drawing tip!
>>5679119its finewhat do you want critiqued about it?
>>5679119not drawn in perspective, drawn too small, eyes are symbols, right foot and toes are symbols, chair is indistinct in a way that looks like it's intentional but it doesn't help the drawing, no background, no depth
>>5679119Beg here, so I might be terribly wrong. Thouse legs proportions look wrong. Her left arm proportions look wrong. You might be going for foreshortening, but it doesn't read like that.
>>5679123If I had to say the best place to learn this, it's Makoto Kobayashi's art and Obari, who have this concept of anchor points down to a science.See, when animating complex things, your mind might think you need to add a ton of details nd always be on point with your shape structures, but that's incredibly wasteful. What you're actually looking for is a way to anchor a detail to a shape so that it defines the depth and volume as quickly to the viewer as possible, so everything becomes about using these lines to draw things fast, even if the shape SEEMS complex.I don't necessarily recommend beginners to do this right away, but it's a fantastically easy way to draw complex machines and shapes without thinking.
Trying to get a handle on digital rendering.
>>5679173to give a better example of how I use it, this is a design I've been doing for the game I'm working on. (we probably won't get to making this boss until atleast a year from now, but I wanted to get the design elements figured out fast.)

>>5679341you need to let go of your ego dude. Last thread the guy decided to take the time and redraw the face in a way they see as more appealing. >>5679054Have you ever looked at a body of water? Reflections don't work like that, surface is horizontal so reflected lights should be right under light sources. Same for moons' reflections. Also work on the trees, you made classic rookie mistake drawing only branches that go either to the left or to the right. Add front and back-facing branches, and add some complexity. Right now tree in the center draws all attention, but it is the weakest part of the drawing. And then think about composition. Do you really need that tree on the left growing out of the border?
>>5679456I take a pretty hard stance against kawaii moe stuff. Even the suggestion of going in that direction is absurd to me, especially when there's a weird intent to remove features that define strength in a character.Last time someone else did basically the same thing, and I don't get this weird obsession with going in this one particular direction. In a year I'll be int for faces then I will focus on figures as I am also doing Brent Eviston's course which will allow me to do Vilppu due to similar drawing style. I will be concurrently doing Evolve as I finish the Doodle Masters course as I want to be able to paint traditionally on top of digitally. >>5680245Dont take the vax it gave me seizures for the first two days
So if i have bad taste I'll be /beg/ forever?
>>5680220I essentially stopped grinding for the sake of grinding. Nowadays, I usually try to draw something until I either notice something looks wrong or that something is giving a hard time. Then I look around for reference and do targeted practice of that specific thing, then I try to draw the thing again from the start. The "from the start" part is pretty important, I think, because a) it allows you to refine the construction process, allowing you to redraw everything more deliberately and b) because I find that eternally fiddling with the same image doesn't tend to give a particularly good finished product.
Stop replying to permabeg.I repeat, stop replying to permabegs. These fuckers should be banned from this board.I repeat, sage every permabeg post, ignore the permabeg.

>>5680371Gotta make an effort to network with people. But if you’re just “an artist” who “draws stuff” and you have no plan, then no one is going to be interested.

I think adding the green secondary light can also give you a cool rim light effect to play with on the body. Here's a rough idea to hopefully help you go further in your future illustrations.
>>5680072>>5680077>>5680111>>5680133>>5680193i took off the dust on my tablet to do this. All of the mistakes and i'm /beg/ myself ffs.and tracing from reference doesn't mean it's equal to it.I did this bc you give me good laughs, and bc I believe no one is hopeless, not even you, so please prove me right and show everyone that I didn't just threw time in the trash

>>5680448definitely some life studies, your poses look a bit traced.
>>5680813I think when you’re getting the basic, you kinda know what skills you’ve got, and where you might need to put more time. I’m getting good at drawing figures, but I still can’t do clean lineart and color for shit, so I know that’s where I gotta put more practice. People say branch out, but what do you think?
>>5680448You're good enough man. What do you actually want to make? What got you into art? Comics, games? Get out of study mode and into creating mode.
>>5680816Yeah, I guess, think about storytelling. Place your character in a situation. Show their action, their emotions, rather than have them posing for a photo. Depends on your goals, though.

>>5680443underrated post, and esdeath fag will ignore it I'm sure.
What method do you use to create figures when drawing?I usually draw two boxes for the two main parts of the upper body , then draw a stylised torso and waist in it, so that I can transfer the 3D shapes of the box in the stylisddd figureIs it good enough? Are there better ways? What do you use?
How far can I get by just drawing a ton from life, photos, other art, etc.? Can I just intuitively pick up perspective, lighting/shading, composition, and all that shit by actually drawing and studying what I like instead of doing gay ass fucking tutorials and lessons and shit?
Bros I'm getting filtered by the draw your hand exercise
>>5680973Just avoid drawing hands my dude.
Trying to into painting. Am I ngmi?

>>5681033the foreshortening and poses are very impressive and dynamic! would love to see it fully finished!
would this be considered moe??i drew this a while back referencing a style i remember seeing. i dont know the name of it
>>5681085idk about moe but it's very ugly
>>5681085that looks like shoujo
>>5681093Yes!! it does! Tysm <3 I was wondering what it reminded me of. I think i was inspired by that 70-80s shojo manga art style. Call me weird but i just adore this sort of illustrations, they feel so pretty and sparkly
>>5681108NO BITCH HE SAID TUMBLR
HOW DO YOU DRAW LIKE YOU'RE RUNNING OUT OF TIMEDRAW DAY AND NIGHT LIKE YOU'RE RUNNING OUT OF TIMEEVERY DAY YOU FIGHT LIKE YOU'RE RUNNING OUT OF TIME LIKE YOU'RE RUNNING OUT OF TIME ARE YOU RUNNING OUT OF TIMEHOW DO YOU DRAW LIKE TOMORROW WON'T ARRIVE HOW DO YOU DRAW LIKE YOU NEED IT TO SURVIVEHOW DO YOU DRAW EVERY SECOND YOU'RE ALIVE?
>>5681096>>5681117mehh…i dunno. tumblr has a very. distinct style of either being super anatomically obsessed (yet having dogshit proportions and poses), looking like modern dc comics or just super cartoony piss water with the light lineart and calarts faces
>>5679646I got laid off and I've been reading a chapter from my Michael Hampton book a day and doing a couple hours of LD a day. Here are the results. I'm happy with it these days but I wish I could match his gestures. I get too caught up on shapes for my 1-minite drawings whereas Hampton can show so much with just lines.
>>5681133I'm seeing nothing wrong with any of these examples in that image. what's the issue with these styles?
>>5681085not really, but moe sucks anyway, so it's better to have your own style. this looks really cute!
>>5681149just saying, i dont understand the comparison to tumblr. this stuff just seems kinda similar to one another. its good but it just feels familiar. the only thing i could see being remotely similar to anon’s art is the way the nose is drawn.
>>5681155I do them in 1, 2, 5, 10, and 25 minute increments. Smaller the drawing, the smaller the time.
I've managed to find a version of photoshop on an old computer from 2012 before they started the subscription shit, how out of date is it compared to now

Can't sleep. Some skulls.
>>5680193symbal drawing has nothing to do with placement, you can't just make things up like thatit's about how you just draw almond shapes for the eyes, with no regard to perspective or anatomyit's why your shit looks like you just slapped some stickers on a deflated basketball
>>5680193I'm sorry esdeath anon. I lied to you about symbol drawing before because of my own poor knowledge, I was wrong. Symbol drawing is not about placement, not at all. Symbol drawing is just when you take something that should be 3D and draw it in 2d, or near-2d.I would go ahead and say that nearly everything on your drawing is 'symbol drawn', but it may not be obvious why. See, symbol drawing is when your brain wants to draw something that looks like something in real life, but doesn't understand the underlying 3d shapes of the thing, and so when you try to draw it, the only thing that comes out on the page is the symbol - instead of an armpit drawn in 3d, you have an arm with two lines that are meant to imply an armpit, instead of breasts you have two large circles meant to imply the shape of breasts, everything is almost completely flat, 2d - that's why someone said it looks like stickers. Drawing in 3d, drawing the form of things instead of the 2d symbols, requires an understanding of the forms, the shapes of the body in 3d space - do you think people spend hours drawing spheres and cylinders and cubes just for fun? No, it's because people want to develop their ability to think and visualize things in 3D so they can draw them in 3D, and you can construct almost anything out of underlying 3d shapes. What you are drawing is a cartoon. A stylization, simplification, of a 3d form. And that's fine, if you're good at it. Anime is a cartoon, but animators and cartoonists have an understanding of how to simplify 3d forms into stylized characters. Here, a screenshot with your favorite waifu in it. There is obvious depth all over the place here, things built out of simple 3d shapes. I am garbage and you can still clearly see it with my redlines. This depth is NOT present in your own work. You are not showing the depth at all, or taking it into account when drawing. You simply symboldraw, to create the ILLUSION of an understanding of depth.
we need everyone to draw obligatory esdeath

Should we have a beg thread for people who are actually trying to learn and a permabeg thread for people who are just doodling? Alternatively, Esdeath, doodle warrior, and others may as well just post in /i/ not /ic/. It's obvious they're not here to learn.
>>5681195looks great but im not good so what the fuck do i know
>>5681327Thanks, fren, some of them actually look fucked. particularly the top left/right ones, but I like the bottom ones. A simple canvas flip actually revealed the problem, but on trad, I'm very lazy to take a photo and flip it.
bros, I'm going to work. Completely unrelated, but I have like 12 mbps internet and I'm gonna now upgrade to 300 mbps fiber (1 gbps is overkill). it is here. I can watch videos without lagging. finally.
>>5681296it's sad when you pyw on /beg/ and you don't even get a single replythis is why people make their own threads
>>5681009It’s garbage, give up now.
>>5681009>>5681389It's not good because the drawing itself and construction need work. By needs work I mean you need to study construction and figure drawing and perspective
>>5681296I like it
>>5681391Like Nigga Kuzo?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DoxeNAxS9fo&t=393s
>>5681391Not that anon but could you point out what specifically is wrong with the construction/figure drawing/ perspective? I’m also trying to learn.
>>5681397Sure maybe? It's just the basics of drawing. Here you can try:1. Perspective Made Easy, or Marshall Vandruff's 1994 perspective course, or Framed Perspective2. Hampton's Analytical Figure Drawing, orVilppu's Figure Drawing, or Eviston's Figure Drawing, or Huston's Constructive Figure DrawingOther things also in picrel. Do note that picrel is geared towards someone who is looking to get into concept work, and is also almost 8 years old by now.
>>5681407Anon, there is no construction. That's the issue. You're drawing a flat 2D character instead of one that has a feeling of volume.I'm not saying it's awful. It's kind of cute. But it's obvious that you need to get started on studying fundamentals, which in essence are geared towards training you to see and think in 3D.
>>5680251Figure what works best for you, but in general taking notes during the course lessons is a good idea, then try applying your notes to whatever exercises the course gives. Try drawing along with the instructor after you take notes though imo, so instead of just copying, you can think about the content of the lesson.>>5680462The calves of his legs don't look like they're foreshortened enough. His thighs are foreshortened, so they appear to be roughly parallel to the ground and pointing towards the viewer, but the lower part of his legs look like they're mostly pointing down into the plane of the floor.>>5681135These look great anon. with BIG MUSCLY
>>5681420agree with this, but not all artists use the dot to represent the tip of the nose
More work practice.

>>5680331Any courses that helped you with studying figure first or was the growth only on deliberate practice? When did you start practicing seriously how long has it been? Do you have any art before that?
>>5681321I would say the right one feels claustrophobic to me, because the focal point is the girl with the spear, and having the focal point scrunched up into the top left corner of the image feels really weird.
Last doodle before shift ends. Wanted to practice drawing hair and kinda drew a whatever face.
Does foreshortening of that hand work? Is pose to stiff and unnatural? Anything else that might be wrong?
Tried to unify the value shapes since the tiled look was ugly and decreases redeability. Tho this one reduces the subtle plane changes but it forces me to think which planes i wanna simplify into what. Also having difficulty with eyes. They've just never clicked fo rme. Any advice?
>>5681611I am beg, but for me it seems like some eyes aren't on same line. Top left for example. And some eyes aren symmetrical, like second row, second from right. To mee it seems like you don't use as much attention to small details and thats why eyes have these errors.
How do I draw and rotate cylinders in perspective?
>>5681799can you draw and rotate a cube? and can you draw a circle in a square? if so, just draw circles on the ends of your cubes
>>5681799we are over the bump limit, so your question won't be noticed before someone makes new thread. I could try to answer our question, but I am beg, so maybe you should wait and ask again in new beg-thread or in stupid-questions thread (it's not stupid, but that thread is not over bumb limit).
