IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.

Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the Drawthread with fundamental exercises.

POST DRAWINGS YOU NEED HELP WITH.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS using one of the following methods:

>1. screenshot the image and post that instead

>2. change camera capture settings to something smaller

>3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

I think you are being too fast and loose, and so your shapes are coming out deformed. Also counterintuitively, 1min/30s figure drawings and gestures has helped me 'see' 3d more than drawing shapes like that
>>
perma-beg here. im just getting back into it. i wanna get good at front view drawings/portraits.

>quick explanation.
i was copying this skull. i started at top. and alternated to "imagination". it's a training exercise i learned about from jason brubaker.

-i feel one of my weaknesses is that my drawings always slant to the left "\"
-also have a tendency to get too stylized/cartoony. really bad habit. i hate drawing realism, but i know it's the most important thing.
-also have an issue taking too long on a drawing, i blaze through these and get too impatient if it's taking too long

thanks for any help /beg/

I have what can be best described as a mental library of shapes that I use on a constant basis, but the big thing is that EVERYTHING has an anchor line, regardless of whether or not you actually draw it.
In this instance, it's the main ridge line in the middle, which defines the ENTIRE perspective of the shape. The bottom plate I usually use the ribcage lines as the guide for it's placement, but I can also use the ridge line to figure it out if I have nothing else to look at.

not drawn in perspective, drawn too small, eyes are symbols, right foot and toes are symbols, chair is indistinct in a way that looks like it's intentional but it doesn't help the drawing, no background, no depth
>>
>>5679119
Beg here, so I might be terribly wrong.
Thouse legs proportions look wrong. Her left arm proportions look wrong. You might be going for foreshortening, but it doesn't read like that.
>>
>>5679123
If I had to say the best place to learn this, it's Makoto Kobayashi's art and Obari, who have this concept of anchor points down to a science.

See, when animating complex things, your mind might think you need to add a ton of details nd always be on point with your shape structures, but that's incredibly wasteful. What you're actually looking for is a way to anchor a detail to a shape so that it defines the depth and volume as quickly to the viewer as possible, so everything becomes about using these lines to draw things fast, even if the shape SEEMS complex.
I don't necessarily recommend beginners to do this right away, but it's a fantastically easy way to draw complex machines and shapes without thinking.

you need to let go of your ego dude. Last thread the guy decided to take the time and redraw the face in a way they see as more appealing. Whether it does is up to your interpretation but instead of asking about their insight as to why they made the changes they did you just started talking shit about their design choice in a very aggressive manner
>>
>>5679054
Have you ever looked at a body of water? Reflections don't work like that, surface is horizontal so reflected lights should be right under light sources. Same for moons' reflections.
Also work on the trees, you made classic rookie mistake drawing only branches that go either to the left or to the right. Add front and back-facing branches, and add some complexity. Right now tree in the center draws all attention, but it is the weakest part of the drawing.
And then think about composition. Do you really need that tree on the left growing out of the border?
>>
>>5679456
I take a pretty hard stance against kawaii moe stuff. Even the suggestion of going in that direction is absurd to me, especially when there's a weird intent to remove features that define strength in a character.

Last time someone else did basically the same thing, and I don't get this weird obsession with going in this one particular direction. It's like if you took Miruko and removed the muscles and brazen personality.

I was going more for 90s exaggeration. If we go by your logic, then Outlaw Star and Slayers is moe.

And yeah I guess I am worried about my work, because even though I'm confident in my skills, I never want to stop learning or trying to reach the best I can each day. Everything at this point is still worth learning how to improve or streamline, and I'd like to teach some of that if possible (which I did give some examples of in the last thread.)

he says have your canvas at 5000x2500 with a 100px brush, with pressure sensitive size/opacity
you aren't listening to him, you aren't going to listen to me, why am I bothering
he says clean up your lines as you go, erase the ones you no longer need, which I can see you also aren't following that
look at the oval on her forehead vs the one on yours, they are very obviously different shapes
and you symbol drew the lips, they look like front facing lips on a side turned head

well either way your brush is too hard and too small
you're supposed to trace a lay in on the reference first, then use your trace and the original as your references
checking every 10 minutes or so with guildelines/overlaying to see your mistakes, turn them off
and then fix the mistakes
you are doing none of this, even though he says to, so you are just not listening

I used to ignore them, but lately they've been crabbing me and talking shit about me. They compared themselves to me first, 7 months thinks he draws better than me for some reason when he couldn't whip up something like >>5680133 this in a mere 20 minutes with a broken pen.

I've only been drawing seriously since the start of the year, and only been posting in beg since May. My main focus has been faces and as you can see here my faces are 10 out of 10 times good. >>5680111 >>5680133

I am now doing Portrait Accelerator to increase my faces tenfold, learning the Reilly Rhythms and applying the Loomis method even more than ever. This is a face I made using the Reilly method, the placement is perfect and other than the eye angles (because I didn't use a reference) there is no symbol drawing. In a year I'll be int for faces then I will focus on figures as I am also doing Brent Eviston's course which will allow me to do Vilppu due to similar drawing style.

I will be concurrently doing Evolve as I finish the Doodle Masters course as I want to be able to paint traditionally on top of digitally. Once I am completed with those two I will be attending manga school for 2 years and be a pro by then together with Vilppu. My plan is still being built but I'll surpass even you in no time.

Symbol drawing is about placement anon. What's important is the placement, and they are placed correctly as I used the Reilly method.

You know, at this point symbol drawing is an /ic/ meme thrown around to insult drawings people don't like. Symbol drawing doesn't even have its own Wikipedia page. You could call literally any drawing symbol drawing and it'll be impossible to deny given that features are symbols to begin with.

In fact, I ask you to post your work and let's see if you're symbol drawing or not.

I essentially stopped grinding for the sake of grinding. Nowadays, I usually try to draw something until I either notice something looks wrong or that something is giving a hard time. Then I look around for reference and do targeted practice of that specific thing, then I try to draw the thing again from the start. The "from the start" part is pretty important, I think, because a) it allows you to refine the construction process, allowing you to redraw everything more deliberately and b) because I find that eternally fiddling with the same image doesn't tend to give a particularly good finished product.

>>
>>5680371
Gotta make an effort to network with people. Can’t make something from nothing.
First thing to ask yourself is WHY you deserve attention and followers in the first place, because that affects how you network and present yourself. What’s your hook? If you focus on fanart of specific anime/game/etc characters then you can start by going to places where fans of those things congregate and show off your art and advertise yourself. But if you’re just “an artist” who “draws stuff” and you have no plan, then no one is going to be interested.

I think you could push your colors more. An easy way is to split the scene into red/blue red/green since you have red already. I added a secondary color and adjusted some things like her left arm, the jacket folds and legs. I think adding the green secondary light can also give you a cool rim light effect to play with on the body.
Here's a rough idea to hopefully help you go further in your future illustrations.

What method do you use to create figures when drawing?

I usually draw two boxes for the two main parts of the upper body , then draw a stylised torso and waist in it, so that I can transfer the 3D shapes of the box in the stylisddd figure

Is it good enough? Are there better ways? What do you use?

I'm sorry esdeath anon. I lied to you about symbol drawing before because of my own poor knowledge, I was wrong. Symbol drawing is not about placement, not at all. Symbol drawing is just when you take something that should be 3D and draw it in 2d, or near-2d.

I would go ahead and say that nearly everything on your drawing is 'symbol drawn', but it may not be obvious why. See, symbol drawing is when your brain wants to draw something that looks like something in real life, but doesn't understand the underlying 3d shapes of the thing, and so when you try to draw it, the only thing that comes out on the page is the symbol - instead of an armpit drawn in 3d, you have an arm with two lines that are meant to imply an armpit, instead of breasts you have two large circles meant to imply the shape of breasts, everything is almost completely flat, 2d - that's why someone said it looks like stickers.

Drawing in 3d, drawing the form of things instead of the 2d symbols, requires an understanding of the forms, the shapes of the body in 3d space - do you think people spend hours drawing spheres and cylinders and cubes just for fun? No, it's because people want to develop their ability to think and visualize things in 3D so they can draw them in 3D, and you can construct almost anything out of underlying 3d shapes.

What you are drawing is a cartoon. A stylization, simplification, of a 3d form. And that's fine, if you're good at it. Anime is a cartoon, but animators and cartoonists have an understanding of how to simplify 3d forms into stylized characters.

Here, a screenshot with your favorite waifu in it. There is obvious depth all over the place here, things built out of simple 3d shapes. I am garbage and you can still clearly see it with my redlines. This depth is NOT present in your own work. You are not showing the depth at all, or taking it into account when drawing. You simply symboldraw, to create the ILLUSION of an understanding of depth.

It's not good because the drawing itself and construction need work. By needs work I mean you need to study construction and figure drawing and perspective

I like it

Not that anon but could you point out what specifically is wrong with the construction/figure drawing/ perspective? I’m also trying to learn.

Sure maybe? It's just the basics of drawing. Here you can try:

1. Perspective Made Easy, or Marshall Vandruff's 1994 perspective course, or Framed Perspective

2. Hampton's Analytical Figure Drawing, orVilppu's Figure Drawing, or Eviston's Figure Drawing, or Huston's Constructive Figure Drawing

Other things also in picrel. Do note that picrel is geared towards someone who is looking to get into concept work, and is also almost 8 years old by now.

Anon, there is no construction. That's the issue. You're drawing a flat 2D character instead of one that has a feeling of volume.

I'm not saying it's awful. It's kind of cute. But it's obvious that you need to get started on studying fundamentals, which in essence are geared towards training you to see and think in 3D.

Figure what works best for you, but in general taking notes during the course lessons is a good idea, then try applying your notes to whatever exercises the course gives. Try drawing along with the instructor after you take notes though imo, so instead of just copying, you can think about the content of the lesson.

The calves of his legs don't look like they're foreshortened enough. His thighs are foreshortened, so they appear to be roughly parallel to the ground and pointing towards the viewer, but the lower part of his legs look like they're mostly pointing down into the plane of the floor.
>>5681135
These look great anon. Keep at it, you're doing great

Any courses that helped you with studying figure first or was the growth only on deliberate practice? When did you start practicing seriously how long has it been? Do you have any art before that?

I would say the right one feels claustrophobic to me, because the focal point is the girl with the spear, and having the focal point scrunched up into the top left corner of the image feels really weird.

Does foreshortening of that hand work? Is pose to stiff and unnatural? Anything else that might be wrong?

Tried to unify the value shapes since the tiled look was ugly and decreases redeability. Tho this one reduces the subtle plane changes but it forces me to think which planes i wanna simplify into what. Also having difficulty with eyes. They've just never clicked fo rme. Any advice?
>>
>>5681611
I am beg, but for me it seems like some eyes aren't on same line. Top left for example. And some eyes aren symmetrical, like second row, second from right. To mee it seems like you don't use as much attention to small details and thats why eyes have these errors.

How do I draw and rotate cylinders in perspective?
>>
>>5681799
can you draw and rotate a cube? and can you draw a circle in a square? if so, just draw circles on the ends of your cubes
>>
>>5681799
we are over the bump limit, so your question won't be noticed before someone makes new thread. I could try to answer our question, but I am beg, so maybe you should wait and ask again in new beg-thread or in stupid-questions thread (it's not stupid, but that thread is not over bumb limit).

drawing a square every time you make something like an arm sounds so time consuming though. I guess it can become more intuitive after I've drawn them correctly with a square a couple of hundreds of times?

I’m trying to go through keys to drawing but I’m so ass I can’t even finish the first exercise. Drawing my shoe is difficult.

Should I just start somewhere simpler? I wish I could turn off my brain so I don’t critique my own work and see it as shit.
