Best solution to that problem is to actually draw hands.
You're not going to magically become amazing at drawing hands without practice.
Get out of your comfort zone, stop cheating yourself, stop being afraid of failure.

>>5681210
Not too bad, anon. Captured her likeness. Although imo the tones are sort of flat and the brush work too muddy.

could be the sinister choice of coloration + that strange shadow on her right side, but again this looks pretty great and I'm sorry to see you go so hard on yourself anon. I appreciate that you're more likely than anyone to be self-conscious of your own choices/mistakes though. I still think you'll look back on this in a few years and realize it wasn't that bad.

>>5682235
capturing the posture of this particular hand was very difficult. don't crab around until you've tried it for yourself.
>>
>>5682230
i like it. you have a potential market with this. there's no shortage of turning thots into anime girls. but i HATE that red/black gradient in the back.

start practice drawing women's clothes. and I would absolutely start working on your linework. Specifically line weight. You have areas where you have a thick black blurry line, like by the hand. And a completely missing line, by the left shoulder. The fold pattern on the shirt is very quality though. keep it up.

Being your own biggest critic is a good sign that you're probably gmi. Just keep chucking away at it

I'd probably lose the hand altogether (that goes for pretty much everyone in this thread). It's definitely not doing the image an favours even in the original ref.
Feels like it's competing with the face size wise and it's not the nicest shape anyways. Only reason I included it is that damn sleeve

Also maybe worth trying a full on flat shading more like this?>>5681778

>>5682387
The nose shading's pretty cool with the sharp terminator line and cast shadow.
>>
>>5682875
fantastic work. I agree about the hand. the problem with the ref is that it's a generic instagram pinup portrait with no registrant emotion other than "vaguely demure," which made identifying (and abstracting) the expressive intent of the pose confusing.

Mixer brush tool on a bunch of layers with Bevel & Emboss enabled. The whole trick is to start with bigger brush strokes on the lower levels and get down to the fine details on the top ones.
Works best with 100% opacity otherwise you get weird overlaps like on the neck

I also have a separate PSD window which I use as sort of a mixing palette from which I mix and sample some of the messier looking strokes either with the Mixer Brush or the Clone stamp, whichever does the better looking result.

For the layers I do a blocky paint pass focusing on right values & colours then I do a black mask and design the brushstrokes on it.
This way I don't have to worry about nailing colour, value and brushstroke at the same time.

I finish it up with an Unsharp Mask and mask out everything but the eyes, lips, nose and any other bit I want to emphasize.

Don't have enough free time to put aside just now for a proper breakdown. Hope the attached screengrab kinda helps.

Richard Schmidt's books, Craig Mullins had some good tutorials and posts. There was this dude breaking down Odd Nerdrum's style but for the life of me I can't find those videos again, James Gurney, and James Watts.
I guess Shaddy Safadi too for his less artistic and more formulaic approach to some aspects of painting. Also Bob Ross unironically.

It's a waste of time, the lack of notable features means you'll spend 95% of your time drawing measuring or rendering to try to approach the vapid generic likeness in the absence of things to work with, the time:gains ratio is awful, you will almost never be in a situation to do something like this in a professional setting

pretend, then, that you are the lead character designer in a studio, and your producer throws this portrait photo on your desk and says, "this is the likeness we're using to model the main character of our serial. give me some character art by 8 pm and we'll run with it. take any liberties you want, just make sure it still looks like this girl at the end of the day. if you can't do it, we'll ship it off to someone else and HE'LL be lead character designer"

>>5691479

>>
>>5691476
I work in animation and this would never happen.

First things first, for vis dev artists there's no such thing as 'here's this thing I want it by the end of the day.'
Even for the quickest of assets you usually get a whole day and then some before the next dailies and
I don't know any production manager that would expect you to deliver in such a short time especially for
a main character. Usually you get 2-3 days and even then for main characters that could just be a
progress check in.

Also, the producer isn't involved in this at all. They might give some input on stuff to tweak on deliveries
but it's usually up to the art director, production designer and the production manager to coordinate the
design and any tweaks to it.

If you are unable to meet your deadline usually the production coordinator and the production manager would
work on updating the schedule with a new timeframe based on your speed and potentially pushing some
deliveries further down. But most of the time you are expected to roughly know how long it would take you for a
certain work so they can plan out accordingly when building the schedule.

Secondly, for character design you go through a lot of iterations and for main characters that could be months
of going back and forth. In CG animation lead character is usually a 3D modeller that would be building the main
sculpt from the concepts. Once we've got the first pass on the 3D model we'd go to overpainting from the
production designer or whoever is the vis dev artist responsible for characters, we even get redlines from
directors sometimes.

>"But I'll consider this wall of text your letter of resignation."
>>
>>5691590
nta but clearly the example was less about saying this particular photo is a pro level challenge and more that if you work professionally sometimes you will get shit you don't like to draw from, or you'll be otherwise asked to do something that isn't your favorite thing to do, and acting like you're too good to draw from a shitty reference or making a big stink about it will be the difference between you having a job or someone else.
And as someone who works professionally and has had to draw from far shittier refs than this I think it would behoove you to take that example to heart, unless you plan to go fully independent. Which, if you're looking for that many excuses not to draw, I don't imagine going well. But good luck.
>>
>>5687942
Ok anon think of it like this:
Imagine a painting on a canvas. Now imagine taking a big solid black paper and sticking it onto the painting like a sticker, covering up the whole thing. Then you start peeling away strips of the black sticker, which lets the painting start to show through. That's a mask. Digitally it's invisible. There's 2 modes you can use it in. You can either make it so everything on the canvas is hidden and you erase away the mask where you want things to show, or you have it so everything's showing and you paint the mask over areas you want to hide. You can still edit the canvas underneath without affecting the mask, and editing the mask doesn't affect the canvas. You can delete the whole mask or you can "apply" it to the canvas and make it a permanent part of the painting. I hope that helps. Watch these for more demonstration:

The bevel and emboss works on gaps in the painting (preferably 0% transp). So if the whole image is one solid layer (full 100% transp everywhere) it won't apply the effect. So to create the layered effect I've got to be selective wit how many strokes I apply per layer. It's mainly a technical limitation.

Alternatively you can use an empty overlay layer on top of your painting and then paint strokes with 50% grey brush with some gaps.

>>5687942
This anon summed it up nicely >>5691703. You can definitely do it without masks but I've just found it easier for my workflow as I like to tweak and alter brushstrokes without messing up the colours/values underneath. Hope the image makes sense. It's definitely not the most intuitive approach in the beginning but it's been giving me good results so far.

For the next layer up I would either duplicate and keep refining the raw painting or merge down with mask applied, duplicate and then work on that. Once I'm happy with the values etc. I'd apply a new black mask and work on the brush strokes.

not him, but it's clear you spent a long time polishing the face into a passable imitation of the hip korean instagram style, to the detriment of some of the other features (principally the hand). the lips also look jank; they lack a certain dimensionality and ended up suffering from decal syndrome (symbol drawing) as a result. on that note, I think you cheated a bit by opting out of the worm's-eye angle as depicted in the model. maybe you aren't used to or weren't comfortable rendering something from such an awkward viewpoint, but everyone could benefit practicing on that angle and I recommend you do as well for next time.

frankly, though, I'm nitpicking. yours is a standout contribution to this thread. I like the liberties you took with the subject and I'm glad that you drew this "in your style" (as prompted by the thread) instead of just photocopying like a lot of other anons did (not that that's a bad thing, of course). you also did a damn fine job painting, with the exception of the places you did not spend as much time on (the hand and undershirt, which genuinely hold this piece back from being really great). excellent job overall, and I would be interested to see some of your other work.

you're thinking subjectivity,
if Im 18 and you're 50 then you're old to me,
a 5 yr old would think me old,
and a 500 yr old would consider you young;
>>5697605
>two sixes and the letter n
what matters is you recognized it was a clock
>>
>>5697612
no oh... bro.
Everyone that is after 18 years old is old.
18 years old means you are an adult and no longer young.
>>
>>5697682
So you were asking if I was either a minor using drugs or at least 18 years old.
