I draw anywhere between 40% zoom and 1000% zoom or whatever's the limit in Krita and I constantly change the zoom based on what element I'm working atm. Every now and again I reset the zoom to 100% to get a feel of how the finished thing will look then back to weird zoom levels.

Nathan Fowkes' book/tutorial seems good. Watts usage of pierre noire too. Besides, there are the modern traditionalist with their sharpen Nitram.

Depends on what kind of finish you're looking for. Though, unless you're already proficient with graphite, I'd suggest to stick with graphite until you can e.g. copy a Bargue plate with _great_ accuracy. Charcoal is trickier to handle.

Are there settings to change when you first use a drawing tab? friend gave me an old screenless tab and the lines i make are shaky, i can't do a straight line without it getting cut and sometimes it keep going all by itself if that makes sense? it just doesn't feel like when i'm drawing

Is there any hope for making it with webcomics and comics as an artist in the western internet? It seems like in current times NSFW art seems to dominate all, and the only comics artists who get 6 digits following on social media are pretty much the old dudes that have been here since the 90s. I can't even think of many hugely popular non-porn internet artists from the last decade, the first things that come to my mind are Sakimichan and Shadman. Why it is like this? People probably recognise Krekkov much more than they recognise Joe Mad at this point.

If you realize that comics depend more on interesting story and characters than art to gain a big following, then yes. Your art can't be complete garbage, but past that low bar, you have to make something that sticks with people. Coom has immediately value because people want to jerk it. If not coom, you have to provide some other form of (lasting) value. "Oh, that's pretty" isn't enough. People can't remember that super-realistic or cute picture they saw 3 days ago. They can still remember and still care about stories they read decades ago.

Well, building a website isn't necessarily a herculean task; there are pre-made blogging solutions for instance, like blogger.com.

Are you too young to have never heard of the Great Blogging Era? Some still survive despite the Social Medias invaders.

But, you won't get as much visibility as you would on social media. Yet, this will provide you with a calmer space, and you can always later re-use that content on social media anyway.

Yes. This is exactly why Huston doesn't get hung up on talking about them all too much. That's not to say studying proportions is not important, it comes in to play when doing static/simply posed drawings. You'll develop an eye for what's right as you keep practising and drawing from reference, though. The key is to pay attention to the patterns and relationships of the forms that take place when the body is contorted in certain ways.

Read it all sequentially, cover to cover; copy all drawings along the way.

Doesn't matter if your drawings aren't perfect, just make sure you learn something or train some specific skill each time. Try to vary the way you copy (e.g. go straight with ink, draw big/small, slow/fast, etc.)

Experiment for yourself: take a small still life, a single object. Paint it from life. Take a picture of it with your phone. Paint it from the picture, without looking at the still life/previous painting.

Also, take a moment to study photography, like, white balance.

Plein-air painting will only be beneficial, even if you just aim at figures.

use reference first. Measure everything. Learn face proportions. Try to practice like anyone would practice drawing objects. Ask for critique.

One thing I like to do when I can't find anyone to critique at the moment is to draw with reference then digitally overlay my drawing over the reference and spot what I measured wrong.

You can do it.

Take 3 to 4h to make a basic *block-in*, just establishing the proportions. Spend 3 to 4h refining that block-in, getting basic light/shadow shapes, getting more details in.

Then spend 3 to 4h rendering.

Do it 10 times, and work from good drawing/paintings first. Voilà.

A typical /beg/ issue is that they work for 1h on a piece, but that's not how it works, especially at first. Experienced artists, they can get something done in a hour, but even so, precisely capturing proportions is hard.

Obviously, spending time 12h vs. spending 1h will give you very, very different results.

This is a question about linework and how it interacts with tone in photoshop.

So I like the linework of the circle on the left. The problem is, the value changes based on the tone that's painted behind it. I want it to behave like the line on the right, where it remains unchanged by the tone behind it. Is there a way to do this?

There's no change happening when I set the red mark layer to multiply.

I know I can make the linework go to pitch black to avoid this, but that destroys what I like about the line - its value changes and its got a textural appearance. I know there has to be a way to preserve this but also make it opaque. I just haven't found the solution yet.

I have linework that behaves like it's transparent, but I want it to behave like it's opaque. So I want the layer beneath it to not change the value or color of the linework on the top layer. See pic related in my first post.

If you don't understand that, you have a reading comprehension problem.

I'm trying ways to basically add the white in a layer beneath to the transparent linework to make it opaque - the problem is that the edge of the linework gets fucked up.

The lineart is translucent, so the only way to do this would be to create a fully opaque copy of it (by merging a dozen or so copies for example) and fill it with white (or any light value of your choice) under the lineart layer. Chances are it will look strange though. I think this is one of those you can't have the cake and eat it too type situations. You can always color inside the lines with no or little overlap though.

I'd like to do linework like cory loftis (in pic), he varies the value and the color of the line depending on the surface and it works really well. I'm not very clear on his process though.

1. I could make the shapes below the lineart layer go outside of the lines (or inside of the lines as you said), and then adjust the linework by ctrl+clicking the lineart layer and adjusting it after.

or, I could add the final pass of lineart last so I don't have to do this sort of adjustment.

Not sure what's better but I'll probably try doing both.

If your goal is to improve your skills, think of the staircase. The tendency is for people to want to be at the top without taking the small steps to get there.

Not that this should keep you from being ambitious in the general sense - it's simply describing a phenomenon whereby you have more to gain, as far as developing your skills goes, by choosing a project that is just outside of your abilities and tackling its problems, rather than doing something too ambitious and falling apart.

If you really intend on becoming an artist, work on your skills first and foremost. Keep a notebook with all your ideas: you'll tap into that when you'll be more advanced. You can start a few composition sketches, but don't go too far.

Whenever your ability to do something raises, so does your vision of its quality. Something always gonna be off. This is very important, lots of artists can draw human figure very good, but bam, nothing else! And they become trapped, because they want their backgrounds to be the same as their human figures.


Skills are not an essential part of art, ESPECIALLY when there is a strong idea behind it.
What you actually need to do is to draw it in a way that would immerse viewer, make him think more, maybe even go twice through a page if this is a comic, to see if there were any little details that he missed.

Yes, and what you describe about the process through which this problem occurs is accurate.

I would add that, if you *really* can do figure drawing well, this mean that you have a certain appreciation of more fundamentals notions (proportions, volumes, color mixing, temperature, etc.): learning landscape shouldn't be that hard. But I may be biased, as I personally tried to learn to draw pretty much anything from the beginning.

I agree. Like picrel, according to western's style/standard, is technically poor, but (to me), it's marvelous.

I think that we're looking at things from a different perspective: you seem to consider art as something the artist needs to express, while I consider art as something a random person will need to receive.

And I think a modern random person is likely to have higher standard regarding technical abilities. It's a bit sad in a way that appearances matter that much, but if your ideas really are worth it, why not dressing them as finely as possible?

Hoarding materials can be so bad because we feel like "I'm not that good, so it will only be a waste of materials" you gotta get rid of this thinking. Materials should serve your studies. Finished a tube of pain? Good, it means you're practicing. Go on and experiment with the stuff. Make color charts, one-minute quick figures, copy works you like.

One thing that is cool if you can afford it is to share your materials. You don't need to give them away, just invite art friends to paint/draw with you. I've lost count of materials that spent literal years in a box only to resurface because a friend asked me if they could try them.

Try to deconstruct the painting piece by piece. Like, remove the highly chromatic magentas.

Study what remains, and look for something else to remove; strip it down progressively and it should gives you an idea of which elements provides which feelings.

When I have a new sketchbook that I struggle to start, I usually trash the first pages with poor quality artwork. Then I don't feel as guilty.

For ink, try to study the difference in behavior in all the material you have over simple tasks, like drawing long straight lines in every directions. Try to find what are the pros & cons of the material you've been accumulated, while gaining confidence & improving your line quality.

There's no way to not suck at the beginning, but here are some tips that will make you feel less hopeless:
- measure what you're observing with your pencil.
- practice confident lines. Chicken scratch can and will ruin your exercises.
- practice solid forms. The world is made of them, the more confident you are at drawing these the less trouble you'll have drawing from observation.

People are intimidated by oils. Watercolors has a higher entry barrier [to create something decent].

Acrylics is what people learn to paint with; it's a tricky medium: it dries fast, cannot be re-activated, thus I suppose it doesn't encourage people to properly learn to mix colors nor give people the time to learn to paint properly.

People who sticks with acrylic for a long time aren't in proper conditions to learn the mediums.

In my opinion, acrylic's fast drying time makes it an advanced medium: you need to know how to play with that timing interval as you'd do with watercolor, you need not to lose time mixing paints to the correct colors, etc.

And usually, people who can handle watercolor or oils could go to acrylic, but if you've got skills, oils sell for more, and watercolor allows funny effect that are harder (impossible?) to reproduce with other mediums.

Yes & no. A 100% accurate copy is extremely demanding, difficult, tedious, and has little practical use:you barely ever need such accuracy when painting, light changes, models/you aren't perfectly still, etc.

The chest is an egg shape, Hampton uses egg shape for both males and females and he is a master. All the landmarks then branch out from the sternum (sternum>colar bones>deltoid and so one). It's easier to rotate a sphere/egg than to rotate a cube too since it just needs one horizontal line (where the sternum goes)

I understood your explanation and proko's explanation, it's actually doing it without drawing a bunch of unrelated lines that I don't understand, not the concept. As of 20 minutes ago, I've tried stuffing a sock and copying the twist and tilt lines that way. I think I kind of understand how to draw them without copying, now, but I think I should practice with the sock for a full hour first before stopping and seeing if I get it with picture of a bare figure.

If it helps you, maybe you could practice a few with just two cubes first. Draw two cubes then imagine a fat sheet of fabric covering/connecting them. This is just a really quick mock up. I think the 10th rib and hip bone landmarks are helpful, and I always think of them as corners of boxes. Maybe this type of visualization might help?

I'm pretty sure this isn't necessarily a matter of digital tooling. You could perfectly reproduce this piece with trad medias.

There are small touches of white on the water to reflect clouds that feels like white scumbling. The magenta touches also have this "coming forward" feeling, they also chromatically respond to the warm, chromatic refleted lights.

Hum, now that I think of it, there's a strong yin-yang motif: source of light in the "center" of a the dark forest area, and the small "island" among the blues, all separated by a curvy line.

Also, the clouds are very sharp, the water is very calm;the clouds reflects in water: reflections always have a strong appeal, and will likely impact us considerably.

Boxes that share the same horrizontal plane are called a group, group 1. If you rotate a box, it's group 2. If you put the group 2 box next to the group 1 box, it'll tip over. So you need to do the whole perspective rigamaroll for the group 2 box(s). Proko finds it complicated and just tells you to outright ignore making guidelines and learn to rotate boxes without the guidelines, freehanded.

Just start drawing. You don't need too much hand holding in the beginning. Try your best to recreate what you see. After a month or so you should get comfy with your own mark-making. The books in the sticky aren't that bad. Use Hamptons book on figure drawing to help you understand people you observe. Loomis' Successful Drawing is decent guide for everything else. Composition is a tricky thing to read about as every artist has their own approach. Devin Korwin has a PDF series about art basics on artstation that's pretty good, but it might be a little too technical for beginners. I don't draw anime so I can't make any specific recommendations other than just copying the artists you like. There are a ton of anime tutorials out there so you can pick one you find appealing when you're ready for that.

Most black are rather cool. Hence, black+white will give you something rather cool, especially if you're not playing with transparency.

Adding a bit of brown will allow you to mix grays that are less cool (warmer then), thus allowing you a two-dimensional mixing spaces: from warm (brown) to cool (black), and from dark (brown/black) to light (white). All while staying in a rather neutral zone, with cheap/available pigments.

Typically, if you go outside and observe some shadow e.g. on a wall, or the cast shadow on a tree, you can usually observe temperature variation (in addition to minor value variations): the places with reflected lights tend to be warmer; the places light by the blue sky are cooler, etc.

This is a good way to add some diversity on top of a value study, and a good way to start working your grays handling, which is a major skills for a realistic painter.

This is overall true. I've observed that e.g. with big washes, the paper wraps uniformly, while with smaller washes, the paper wraps locally, creating puddles and such (300gsm, 100% cotton).

But, buckling on a 300gsm paper shouldn't be too much of a problem: put the paper at an angle, let the water drop down, and you should be able to have some decent control over the wetness. Though, some paper behave better than others in that regard.

When it's framing time, I think there are techniques to un-buckle the paper, e.g. by wetting the other side & letting dry pressed on a flat surface; YouTube may have more complete advises.

The exact same exists in trad, regarding using a stomp for graphite, such tools are often abused by beginners, and they never properly take the time to understand how to render form accurately.

Using a more primitive tool (hard round / sharpen graphite) forces you to slowly go over the form, and make sure you understand it all.

When you're a bit more advanced, you can take shortcuts, and the results won't look bad.

In Japan, when people want something to be read, they go along with whatevers popular in the moment. Fight mangos (dbz)>slice of lifes (k-on)>isekais (sword art online)>and whatever is after isekai which hasnt happened yet...

As often as possible, but play the long game.

Better to do it once or twice a week for 2 to 3 months and increase after, than burning out after two weeks doing it 3 to 4 times a week.

What do you want to draw? Basically, pick:

- a book that will explain to you what a plumb line, how to measure, etc. ;
- a book on composition;
- a book on perspective;
- a book teaching you to decompose complex forms into simple forms

Once you've got something decent out of the first one, start doing master copies.

Not him but Eviston IIRC is often quoted for his perspective course, and Hampton for his figure drawing course.

But other people only swear by Vilppu, so...
