her lower eye is melting off her face like a sunny side up egg, and her huge upper eye lid only makes it worse. the placement of that eye has also messed up the jawbone/cheek and she ends up looking like the hunchback of notre dame had a stroke

I don't specifically practice much. I just do a lot of paintings. Regarding compositions, I don't know I think if you just think about a scene from a cinematic perspective it seems pretty simple to me. Also having the character be small in the frame gives you a lot of options

Bad muddy values. Dead colors (darker =/= more black). Learn how to midtones. Go easy on the blending and make more defined edges.

How about bolder lines to define bolder shapes, and thinner lines for less significant parts? I would go bolder lines on the antlers outer shape of the head, chest, and front legs. The back doesn't need bolder lines.

could use texture details almost everywhere. especially the grass - there are no signs of wear/paths.
you could do what >>5841204 says but what's really missing is textural detail on the tents. blurring *sounds* like it would fix the realism problem but in reality it only masks it. you'll need to add texture and then blur it (if you want that look).

I don't love the circular element on the lefthand knight's elbow. but that's more up to you. I feel like it distracts from the overall shape.

the tent in the middle is confusing. the slope on top doesn't match the base. it looks like you're trying to avoid a tangent line where the two figures' arms meet. also, is it at the same depth of the lefthand tent -- just bigger? I think it'd be more satisfying if it were between the lefthand and righthand tents in terms of depth. and you should make the lefthand tent darker.

I feel like everything is a little too saturated, particularly the trees. Colors look great otherwise. The brushwork is cool, but the figures look cut out. I think this could benefit from mixing in some soft/disappearing edges. I think those two things would be able to create a focal point where there is none now.

tried to give it a rough paint over, tried to keep with your style, hope this helps somewhat. The face was really weird on the right side (the shadowy side) also the nose and mouth were kind of crooked and the nose was way too short and upturned towards the right. corrected the arms and hands as well as the gigantic (but anatomically incorrect) boobs. I tried to make it more realistic while keeping with your ideas.

Much better, looks more bearish and much more alive, his face pops now. Good job anon!
I dont know if this trick is like standard knowledge, but it's super easy in PS anyway: to check if your painting/drawing is kind of sound and it's not your brain making you believe, flip the canvas/mirror it. That usually helps with symmetry issues and anatomical errors, and just generally gives you a kind of reset (as its easy to get lost in your painting). This has been done for centuries by painters, usually with mirrors though.

Not to be rude anon but dont you feel that it's kinda bland? Very little to see here, other than roughly sketched out overcoats two sizes too large. Maybe add some kind of depth and more detail or at least put in more work with the faces.
>>
>>5843808
Stage 3 looks best, by not paying attention to where to place your values in stage 4, you make everything very flat and muddy. The highlights especially should be placed with great care. This is a common issue I believe, as many people will want to get to a finished look but they lose the essence of what they painted to begin with.

>>
>>5843962
I mean the anatomy is completely wrong, the face looks incredibly 2D and the "hatching" (more like scratching) doesnt help you hide the lack of foundation. Just because it's "quick" doesnt mean you should dismiss every sound approach. You could use this pose, use reference material and work on it, but in this stage it is piss poor anon. You probably got lost in what you assumed would look cool, but it doesnt. The other sketch of yours, or study if you will, is far better but your inclination to scratch-hatch instead of following the actual forms and shapes when hatching is your downfall. You also need to work on your line confidence, as this makes your work far better. Your values are good. Also I dont think Raskolnikov looks like that or would ponder his actions with axe in hand, iirc he did not have a nervous breakdown in the scene.
>>
>>5844004
Thank you
>>
>>5843973
In stage 3 the roughly blocked in shapes and values give a better sense of depth and form, whereas in stage 4 they added a lot of detail but didnt pay attention to the actual details itself. Within the roughness there is more room for the brain to fill in the blanks, but in the finished product the use of badly placed highlights (bright values) betrays the illusion of depth that an artist (usually) strives towards. The illusion is destroyed because the brain now "knows" that the painting is indeed flat, that it is wrong and not lifelike. That anon sort of revealed his lack of attention or lack of knowledge when they didnt work closely along the reference material and started to just randomly use highlights which only served to flatten everything as they did not appear in unity with the rest of the image. The details are physical entities just as much as everything else, every single stroke of the brush is information and that information can either serve your painting or detract from it. We are all, as artists, creating something from nothing and that something will have to look convincing in some ways, even if it is completely unrealistic in its subject. I dont know if I explained it well, but in essence remember this: always work from rough shapes to smaller shapes, but dont treat the smaller shapes as less important. They all must work in unison and if you paint a perfect nude figure before painting a super 2D fabric ontop of it, it will still look like shit, because you buried your actual knowledge under the muddy, flat fabric.
Light is essential in sofar as that it covers everything and the values it creates give the illusion of depth even when you only paint them on a 2D plane (your canvas)
Look at Dechardins work here, everything is quite simple in the way it is setup. I think to best understand how light and values and forms work, you should study actual masters of light. Like Dechardin, like Sorolla, like Rembrandt.

i think you are right about the textures with the tent it was the first thing i noticed when i posted it myself. problem is the tents in the reference photo were quite smooth and didnt have much texture at all, i could have looked up some folded cloth material and incorporated that and the audience wouldnt have known any better. i think everything you said is pretty accurate and good criticism, im going to go forward with all of this in mind. thanks.

>>5843196
i agree with the edges point, there are soft edges throughout the painting but its mostly hard. im trying to emulate a john park style which isnt easy to do. edges are probably the most challenging thing to me because its by far the most abstract concept with doing realism or illustrations, there doesnt seem to be a real consensus among different artists. some say is value relationships, others say they can be manipulated more dynamically. just something i have to study and practice.

Everything from the mouth upwards is fucked. the lips are so smooth but You refuse to study actual facial anatomy and constantly revert to making huge drooping eyes that shift closer to one another with every new take. That bitch has a unibrow now. basically the right eye is far too big, the nose is too small which further weakens the actual structure as there is no anchor point. Study skulls and faces and alpply that to your drawings. Rendering is nice but it's more fun when you have a foundation.
>>
>>5845167
ur right
>>
>>5845186
Not trying to be rude but a better understanding of the anatomy and how it works in space would work wonders for you, far more than just rendering this until its polished. Draw some female skulls, draw some eye balls with eyelids, draw noses from varying angles, like this nose for example looks like a potato lump, no shape, it should be visible from below with that perspective. The eyeballs you paint are not balls, theyre just symbols. Bridgman has good reference material for all that stuff.

thumbnail looks nice, i think it's worth tying down and putting some finish on. maybe a reflection of the sail in the water would be nice, or some foreground information. also saying "crit encouraged" doesn't actually encourage critique. say something about your piece, what you're working on, what you think isn't working, what you're going for, etc.

A dress like that isn't vacuum-tight on a person, idiot. It looks like it's got two separate socks sewn onto the front for each breast. Yet every coomer artist ALWAYS gets it wrong, because they're fucking idiots. I guarantee they do this because they've never actually studied clothing, or fabric folds, or dresses, at the very least. The fact that I have to point this out shows how fucking blind everyone on /ic/ is about this.

>>
>>5849382
Agreed. Needs a little somethin'-somethin' to add soul. I usually love magical faerie themes but something about this lacks a warm feeling... maybe its the position/placement of the gnome? What is the gnome looking at? He also looks uptight a little bit. It almost makes me anxious. Everything else is really skillfully done though.
>>
>>5849392
no the soul is there, the piece is overall fine, you dont need to add interaction or elements. the problem is that there is just too much information, like i did't even notice the skull. keeping it simple is best, if u are going with no focal point the best solution is to keep it simple. when you have too much information you need to guide the viewer.
>>
>>5849396
It's going to be scanned and colored, which should separate the elements. It's hard to tell that he's in a ribcage and there are pieces of spine on the ground etc, but once there are greens and yellows I think you should be able to tell. Yes I need to work on all of my fundamentals though, composition etc

your paintings loose their value only cause you add to big tits on your figures... also the perspective isnt "right" for her arms, the foreshortening will look different, right now her hand alone spread open would be maybe the same length as her whole arm counting the hand aside.
you do the same "mistake" as in your old painting with the breast, you dont think like in space but rather in symbole thats why you choose the same angle of the breast as your old one.... also the lightning doesnt hit the forms of the breast right.
Do some basic form studies. GL.

The legs and feet look proportionally alright, such proportions are normal for a heavy body. He >>5851964 has never seen or studied anatomical variation. A lot of people have small feet/heavy legs especially when the proportions are feminine. However, you should have added as much detail and paid as much attention to the feet as you did to the knees. Otherwise the weight placement looks awkward, it doesn't look like her weight is resting on the soles of the feet, it looks like the feet are drawn lazily.

I like it, just thinking ahead to the colours/ composition I think it might be hard to make it more interesting because there are so few elements. Like maybe you could have an onlookers face in the foreground lit harshly in blue/cold moonlight against the warm or something but that's a composition thing I guess.
I might suggest taking a step back from it and working more loosely so it's not all so central and singular.
for some reason I'm thinking of the way Mead Schaeffer makes his images.

>are you the same anon who did that painting of a village that had huts with straw roofs, and that other painting of a fenced alley with a bunch of green ivy?

Yeah, that's me. Glad to see my "brand" is recognizable.

> one of the best pieces I've seen posted on /ic/ in my ten years of browsing this board.

Wow. I'm actually really flattered. Perhaps I am approaching the culmination of my efforts. Everything is clicking into place.

No worries, I can take it. I was drawing furry art back when Something Awful were the cool kids of the internet and artists were genuinely ashamed/afraid to draw anthro art for fear of being lumped in with a bunch of degenerates.

Nowadays nobody seems to give a damn anymore, and it's far more embarrassing to be a Goon than a Furry.

Lowtax sold his site for a fraction of what he could have gotten, got BANNED from his own site, ruined two marriages, and blew his brains out just to spite his wife and kids when the judge handed down the alimony judgement. Shmorky turned out to be an abusive psycho gender-bender crybully sex pervert. The remaining Goons are a bunch of hyper politically correct losers who accuse anyone who makes fun of them of being a Nazi. Basically the Goons became everything they used to make fun of.

Basucally the furries won, and it is soo funny to me.
