>Gustave Dore was an untrained artist, who never used a model and could not sketch from nature

does anyone know any more examples of self-taught artists?

Ayami Kojima is self-taught

I’m not buying it, what does “could not sketch from nature” mean? you’re telling me he can draw a human figure leaning on a rock, but if he’s looking at a human figure leaning on a rock, he can’t draw it? He can draw drapery, but only if there isn’t drapery in the same configuration in his field of vision? I have a feeling this amounts to being bad at portraiture/likeness or something, it literally makes no sense

engravers are just tracers. rub sketch onto the wood/metal and engrave. like inkers in comics.

How did he sketch then? Also, post source.

Don't believe blindly what others say. He was also a sculptor, do you really think he sculpted that without a model?

You don't need formal training with talent. And if you don't have talent not even all the training in the world can help you
