Post your work and anons will tell how much they'll pay for it if they were the buyer
>>
>>6056736
Anons aren't interested in buying art, they will pay next to nothing
>>
>>6056736
Artist always devalues art since they can just make it themselves not a good thread for ic.
>>
>>6056736
And they aren't even willing to pay for books and courses
>>
>>6056739
Yeah no one here has (a) money or (b) the naivety or motivation to spend money on art unless it is literally by an artist they worship and usually at that point the cost for a commission is too high.

Art has no value to society and is not real work
I'm sorry you all wasted so many years honing a worthless skill
but I hear there are plenty of opening for apprentices for trade jobs, start there
>>
>>6057085
Art is the only constant throughout of human history. Art is what separates us from animals. Your post is dumb cope.
>>
>>6056736
Old but def one of my most timely pieces
>>
>>6057094
Sorry but art has not done anything for humanity
all it has done is lead to a much of millennials thinking that can become artists so they can get out of work
I'm sorry your communist professor told you lies and made you have debt that will stick with you for the rest of your life
but it doesn't change the fact that artist is not a real job
hell even onlyfans whores do more work and add more value then artists and that isn't real work either
now wake up from this fantasy go get a real job and you can thank me later
>>
>>6057116
Art is not only what you see on the internet and what you don't like. Art doesn't exist since the 90s.
>>

>>6057123

truth hurts sometimes but all I want to do is help you all
I used to have a friend who wanted to be an artist, went to school took life drawing classes the whole nine yards
and do you know where he is right now?

he is still living with his parents drowning in debt, over thirty years old with nothing to his name and a bunch of scribbles
now do you want to be like him or do you want to be a grown up and a contributing member of society
making people happy by fixing their house or unclogging their drains
>>
>>6057151
I'm making people happy by giving them waifus to beat their meat to
>>
>>6057154
nope you are just wasting time at best and feeding an addiction at worst
there is a lot of demand for plumbers and electricians nowadays anon and you'll make so much good honest cash

>>
>>6057172
it's not even "his" tragic backstory, it's his friend's.
>>
>>6057172
Its not my story
its the story of all who go down the path of the artist
one that only has one road, that being living with your parents in debt
>>
>>6057178
It's a story you made about yourself to justify your actions.
>>

>>
>>6057186
I wish I had made it up then there wouldn't be a life wasted
that is why I wish to help those who go down this path
I mean just look at the art on this board all of it is total amateur kindergarten stuff that most four year olds can do
no one on this board will ever make it in this "career" lol path
sorry reality is tough but everyone hear needs to hear it

>>
>>6057085
art has plenty of value if you know how to present it/ sell it outside of it just being art. Paintings are great for decor, art is used as an asset for video games a lot, animation for entertainment, paintings for money laundering, nfts for money laundering, nsfw art for spanking the monkey, youtube thumbnails, concept art, etc.
To only look on the subjective side of art and judge it based on that is just plain myopic.

But then again anyone who stays in this place for more than a few years are probably begs in permanent stagnation, so they become spiteful and feed their ego by crabbing. It's sad more than anything. And they are easily baited by no life trolls too, as you can see in this thread

>>6059981
Well okay let's discuss this this since I know a lot of people are getting upset
so let's say I've got money right, so now what you've gotta do is convince me to give this money up
so if you set low like idk $5, well that means I couldn't buy myself a soda, and sorry I'll get way more out of a bottle of pepsi then I will your drawing
or if say you make it $100, well I couldn't buy a new game then and once again I'll get more out of elden rings then any drawing in the history of ever
this is why no one will pay for artwork that will be looked at for at most a couple of minutes vs even a soda pop that will give objectively more enjoyment then staring at lines on a piece of paper
sorry art has no use whatsoever hence why no value and not real work
/thread
>>
>>6060003

Lmao, what a try hard loser. You are using your own values and shilling this shit at every drawing knowing full well people will get upset even with the context and going back at trying to sound reasonable. I wound't put behind you samefagging with angry responses just to try to get another person to say something.

By your logic money has no value, it's just paper, what has value is gold because it's rare, food has value because it has nutrition, money? No, you need to add value to it so it has no value. but you are using something that has no value to judge how much things are worth. Stupid, hypocrite and try hard all for attention and internet points, that also have no value. Don't know if you use reddit but you fit right in.
>>
>>6060044
Money my boy is proof of labour
when I hand someone a pound it means that that is me transferring part of my labour over to someone else's labour so yes money has no inherent value mainly because its a trade medium
my goodness maybe you should have taken an economics class once in your life fool

Art has no value because it has no value and even the resources to create art is dirt cheap, couple of quid and you'll get every thing you'll need to make your silly lines, that's why art has no value
>>
>>6060057
Lmao, are you stupid or what? You don't need to work to get money, you can just get lucky, heck have you heard of interest? Are really serious? You think you are clever, that comming here and getting two responses calling you a dumbass somehow makes you a master troll? No, you are just the sort of person that ruined this website to the ground and you have fucking hundreds of you at very fucking second ruined all boards with any sort of movement.

Your logic makes no sense, anyone can find easily thousands of flaws and contractions, is fedora levels of "wow I'm so smart" and the only thing you can do is say the same thing over and over again time to time trying as hard as you can say someone is so angry like it makes any difference. Is that you masterplan? To be called retarded over and over again while you ignore everything is being said again and again to your face were you need to force any sort of reaction? Really clever and original, never seem anyone acting like this around those parts.
>>
What? Did you shut up now? Will be hilarious to see he posting the same shit again knowing full well that he got his ass fucked in three replies. What a fucking try hard loser.
>>
>>6060057
Money isn't proof of labour wtf u on mate. Go to a slot machine and win - where's the labor there ? Oh you might say you worked for the money. Maybe not,. maybe your parents gave it to you, maybe you stole it

Dude if you wanna make people cry don't claim their art is worthless. show them why. Dissect their style, their technical shortcomings , the limits of their imagination. But guess what you can't do that because you, yourself has none of those things. Ooof - keep trying though by pure chance u'll upset someone

$50-$100 cause never spend more than that on non-essential goods at a time unless it's literally going to help me earn money.

But if I had cash to burn I would spend up to $1000 on an original painting by an artist I really liked. Traditional only though. I just don't give a shit about digital commissions from other artists. I might as well just look at their other art and download that.
>>
>>6062061
everything i have seems fair, because everything they sell they sell commercially. as an individual, i can't compete enough to make a single-serve painting worth their time. i need those thousands to live, so i'm unable to properly commission the industry greats.

these are mega poverty prices though. Anon should charge at least double or triple what this artist is doing. Especially since they do NSFW art.
>>
>>6065493
>this is the lowball amount I'm trying to keep myself from offering
Kek I do tend to lowball myself, mostly basing prices off skeb rn since most decent nips charge 7k+ for a full color waist up.
>>
>>6065517
the world would be a better place if artists just charged skeb prices instead of going off what teenage girls charge
>>
>>6065529
To be fair on skeb you won't get harassed by asshole clients who complain about every little detail and ask for 30 fixes and then cry and bitch that your drawing looks nothing like what they asked for and demand a refund.
What you get is what you get.
>>
Cant take this board seriously. Shitting lowball offers is typical for ic
>>
>>6065543
Yeah skeb is set up to avoid that by design too, since it doesn't let commissioners communicate with artists beyond the initial art request. We need something like that for Westerners.
>>

if she is some slampig, do you draw her like that or give her a regular anime body?

>>
>>6056746
$40~$60
>>
>>6065938
Depends on how much comm you're getting.
$5~$15 is a decent starting point. If you're always full then you could raise by $5~$10 at a time.
>>
Charge no less than 50 USD for anything.
If you don't feel comfortable doing that, then you aren't ready to do commissions seriously.
>>
>>6066716
Yeah I would start with $10 an hour but weight all my prices so that people pick the $50 option.
Like:
I can get out a color figure in 4-5 hours and I want to do 2 of those a day so I weight my menu like:
Sketch: $25 (probably doesnt take 2.5 hours to do this but its weighted to be closer to full color)
Clean Lineart: $35 (same as above)
Full Color: $50

I know normies prefer color so they will just look at those prices and probably go for the Full Color if they have any interest in commissioning me. If I don't think I can offer $50 commissions then I wouldn't even start because the kind of clients that give you 5/10/15 dollar commissions are kids, teenagers, cheapskates etc that are more likely to demand $50 worth of your time on corrections and misleading requests. You will end up working all day on two $10 commissions.
And even if I get $25 or $35 commissions for sketch or lineart, I'm getting paid more than my actual rate for these so it becomes worth it.
Then if I get maxed on commission slots I raise my rate to $15 an hour or around $80 for a Full Color piece and scale my sketch and lineart options appropriately.

Also when you are starting from no commissions you should be posting examples of commission level artwork constantly that you just do for yourself but call them commission pieces so people feel like you have experience doing commissions and hitting commission deadlines.
>>
>>6066502
I don't even know how you price kirbys, do you even count them as characters?
>>
>>6066728
>this nigger seriously thinks he’s going to be getting 60 commissions a month, 720 a year
>at any price past $20
>>
>>6066850
No the maximum would be 10 slots per week of $50 commissions but it's unlikely the slots would be maxed out without a lot of exposure and if ever near maxing out = increase prices.
Goals would be:
- 1 commission per week on avg
- 3 commissions per week on avg
- 5 commissions per week on avg
- Try to increase prices if demand can justify it.
- Aim for less commissions without reducing overall commission income.

Commissions would be supplemented with:
- a part time job unrelated to art that you quit when possible
- try to get contract work by slinging your portfolio everywhere
- try to build up a community on social media by making your studies into 2-3 panel comics that engage people much better than a floating figure
- make a free simple visual novel type game to test interest for future patreon possibility (and just cause its fun)
- try out simple animation loops for social media engagement since people love using them for discord type memes
- I'd rather avoid cynical networking with people based on their ability to get your name out but it's another way to force yourself into success.

Basically I just think that you shouldn't be spending your time on commissions unless it is financially worth your time. You would be better off spending 8 hours learning a skill with future earning potential like animation or game dev like I said above than doing a $10 commission. Time is money.
>>
>>6066883
you’re doing it ass backwards, you don’t supplement commissions with contract work
and your economy is kindergarten tier, whether you can get 5 $50 commissions has zero bearing on whether you can get a $600 or whatever amount gig, your ability to fulfil a client demand is an entirely different factor to whether you can attract thousands of people with a steady demand for shitty character art
you 100% don’t earn a living with art
>>
>>6066917
There's more contract work than just fulltime studio gigs, which is probably what you are thinking of. If you can get a fulltime gig then yeah, don't need commissions.
The commissions are absolutely a starting point and the goal is to not even have to do commissions.

I know people working fulltime for animation studios for netflix that do paid commissions so I reject your premise that they are incompatible.
>your ability to fulfil a client demand is an entirely different factor to whether you can attract thousands of people with a steady demand for shitty character art
You are just inserting weird assumptions on the quality and the quantity of people needed to get commissions.
>>
>>6066932
no, I was not referring to in house work, but to the non kiddie pool commissions, I don’t know how $600 made you think of in house work
no, I am stating facts about the demand side of the equation
do you even do commissions regularly? or at all
this is some armchair shit
>>
>>6066947
Contract work is not commissions. Commissions are commissions.
I have no experience with any commission over $100 so cannot comment. I am only talking about starting out and going from 0 art related income to paying your rent with art.
It's supposed to be speculative and I didn't imply otherwise.
Happy to see alternative suggestions rather than implications and insults.
>>
>>6066973
commissions is what contract work was called before the word became synonymous with porn
it literally means making something for a customer
the sistine chapel was a commission
>>
>>6067013
To me commission is where the art is the end product and there's no context beyond that while contract work is coming in to make art as a small part of an overall project/product/media etc. Usually you are dealing with an art director and a company under contract instead of a single person.
I recognise that you can (and should) have a contract when commissioning though. Usually just emails are enough though compared to a more formal legal document with a company.

It doesn't, and in a way I hate doing it. Still in this cyberpunk world (and when I say cyberpunk I mean it: mass surveillance, propaganda networks, divide between poors and rich increasing) you got to do what you got to do.
Not only that, it's propaganda to not flip houses. Who benefits if middle class Americans don't flip houses? Ah yes, https://www.cnn.com/2021/08/02/business/family-homes-wall-street/index.html, the banks.
>>
>>6058246
Art is definitely a skill that could make you rich or poor. I, as a musicfag who made albums and plays piano and guitar, recognize that art is more versatile and marketable than music. You can just rip off royalty free music: you can't flip assets (at least, for characters. You can probably do it for environment)
>>
