Today's Challenge:
Did i transfer this elipse from the vertical to horizontal plane correctly?
>>6199328Yes, it's a perfect circle in perspective.
>>6199329I think i'm starting to get how the Scott Robinsons book works
>>6199328>>6199337Props. Did you use any method to check if the square on the ground plane is perfect square (as opposed to rectangle), or just eyeball it?
>>6199342This was done on a grid so i just extended the lines, then used the rectangle duplicating method in perspective but instead of duplicating it on the vertical plane, i duplicated it on the ground plane.
>>6199351Which allowed me to perfectly-ish replicate the vertical plane
>>6199316What is thatalso I clearly cant feel the form
this exercise is very unsettling for some reason
>>6199351>>6199354Ah, the brewer method grid. I see. Makes sense, tho I'm still a bit confused, what technique is there to transfer the square from vertical to horizontal? I remember the techniques used to mirror it according to a given plane and to rotate it at a given angle by drawing an elipse and changing the VPs, but I'm assuming you didn't use either of those. Sorry if I'm being retarded.
>>6199378I added some fun faces and texture to make it less unsettling
>>6199387cute
>>6199315>bringing back the discord google docdumbass op
beginner here, im looking to get a new display because of pic related (it's really distracting when drawing on a white canvas)would a curved display mess with my lines all that much? Mainly looking at a curved ultrawide because im also a degen gamer but wont bother if it fucks with drawing
>>6199399You don't own the board, it came to a vote last thread and was decided that I should re-include it. Imagine being so triggered by a discord link, imagine not knowing how to not click on a link, just just close your eyes retard. This is the last (you), that (you)'ll be getting from me.Sneed and Seeth faggot.
>>6199401I use a curved screen and haven't had any issues with drawing. Biggest thing is to make sure it's positioned properly.
fuck me noses are hard to draw, I'll get it soon though
First time trying to construct something from a ref pic. Should I keep doing stuff like this while I work on my basic shapes? Or do I just grind one of the figure drawing books in the OP?And yes looking at it now I can see a million little errors but I'm not even sure if I should be bothering with this for now.
>>6199404you missed an e >>6199414those boobs cannot be real I don't believe it any women in the thread want to prove me wrong?
Does anyone have experience with courses from Domestika? There are a couple architectural drawing courses that look interesting @ $8 for 3-4 hours of video.
>>6199385The same technique that is used for duplication of a rectangle along one plane can be also used to duplicate it on a new adjoining plane. It works the same way but you just draw the point to find the new edge on a different plane, going through the bottom middle point
>>6199430https://youtu.be/J4iRyRs68A0
Wew, boinked this so damn hard. But I know how to fix it up a bit, next time should be better.Ayy lmao.
>>6199430I'll draw an exam tomorrow, desu
>>6199404It's not staying in the OP, idiot. That's final.
How am I supposed to draw on a screenless tablet? Should I rest the side of my hand on the tablet or should I let my hand hover over it? The latter feels like there's less risk of injuring my wrist but it's much harder to make accurate lines.
>>6199441pyw
>>6199415I've seen better, honestly. The fact tits like this exist and gay men are a thing proves that humanity is doomed to fail.
Figured some artists might know who this guy is. I can't find the artist who made the original but there is a spasming demon-like creature who I remember looking like this. It has a strange head shape like pyramid head. And a white face constantly jittering like a broken tv screen. Most importantly the character is inky black and constantly convulsing. Anyone know the character?

I'll just add children's books prose to the long list of things I need to work on
>>6199465I wouldn't be running in that situationjust saying
>>6199452THANK YOU! Yes it's this one! I knew an artist would know of him.
>>6199435>>6199430Interesting, I will have to look into it. Tho I don't see where it's shown in the video. He just shows the same basic techniques scott does. I don't understand what you're supposed to connect/intersect. So you find the lower middle of your square, then draw a line trough there from a corner and intersect, what? Or maybe you mean that you have another square marked by an elipse on the other vertical plane, and extend that one's bottom to find the length of the other side of the square?
>>6199414>Should I keep doing stuff like this while I work on my basic shapes?Yes Yes Yes, keep doing these
It's not much but coming from literally nothing about a week ago this feels amazing. Right Side of the Brain's modified contour student examples look WAY more advanced than mine and it's a little discouraging but I'll make it there eventually.
Been working a little bit since >>6195508 and I feel much better about the shape of this one. Spent a lot of time looking at anatomy references and staring at my own hand.I have a habit of making things way too flat as I work on anatomy references, then I try to fix it and turn the thing into a blobby mess. I need to focus much more on the proper 3d form of things from the get go and refine them, rather than doing tons of details that I then fuck up and make look horribly alien as I make major adjustments after the fact.Mostly, I need to put in a lot more time and work. I've been investing like an hour every couple days. Don't have children if you value your free time.
Work in progress
>>6199519Reminds me of Dishonored. Very cool. Hairline seems a tad blocky though.
>>6199316Filtered more than usual as I never considered something like ice much less something within it. as I 'finished' it though I thought of a better way, but feels like it requires more effort and time at the moment.
>>6199523It's definitely Johnny Depp as Sweeny Todd.
>>6199486I kept correcting every little mistake and this one ended up looking traced. Should I stop being this autistic? It's been roughly 2 months since I started drawing and I don't know if that'd just end with me fucking myself over.I had a lot of fun but I feel like it became more of an accuracy exercise than a construction one by the end
>>6199621amazing progress for 2 months. Just keep doing what you're doing. Accuracy is a pre-req for construction anyways
>>6199623Thanks man. That one pic made me realize how much simple values can help with accuracy, so even if it was a meaningless construction exercise it made me learn something cool.
>>6199414Fake tits
any courses or book that teach about inking?
>>6199500You have a habit of shit proportions too apparently, measure the length of your palm and compare it to your fingers you'll see what I mean
Random pose made without reference to test myself somewhat. Legs are fucky, but I appreciate any other feedback I can get.
I don't mean to change the topic, but what do you anons think about Keys to Drawing as a beginner book to learn from?Personally I'm getting filtered hard by the second practice lesson about drawing your had pointed towards you. Ive been practicing for a month on just the first two lessons, but I keep fucking up. Nothing looks good. It doesn't even look like a hanf
>>6199686If you're spending so much time just learning to draw a hand, I would just switch over to larger, less complicated body structures for the time being. You could be learning more about multiple things in the time its taking you to struggle with the hand. Improve on perspective with things that dont have a million different parts. I also think the book is good, but if you dont end up actually enjoying drawing, you're gonna burn yourself out. Mix fun with studies
>>6199686It’s not supposed to look perfect anon, just keep going and reading further
>>6199686It's honestly not great. Don't bother with any of these boring copying books.Focus on learning how to draw basic shapes, straight lines and curves, then learn volumes and perspective.

Okay so I know how to draw shapes pretty good in 3D now where do I go to start drawing details like eyes and noses and hands? I feel like I'm so stuck in symbol drawing when I try draw any human detail
>>6199371This is great, makes me want to get out the watercolors.
>>6199699Yeah, you're probably right. The book just says to draw your own hand in a weird perspective, and after a month it still looks bad. Maybe I'll move onto the next lesson. >>6199702I guess I'll keep going, but how long did it take for you to draw like that? My hand still looks like tumbler fanart. Maybe even worse. >>6199729Do you have any alternative books or sources to study from you reccomend?

>>6199826>The Art and Science of Drawing by Brent Evistonnta but i was planning to read KtD after finishing brent's, currently starting his contour lessonshould i even bother with KtD? considering both of them are teaching observational drawingor should i just skip the book and continue with perspective?
>>6199315What books should I move onto after "You Can Draw In 30 Days"? Preferable something for a 'tard who's probably going to forget stuff instantly.
>>6199889There's nothing wrong with giving it a shot, you draw a lot of different things in Keys like your eyes at a 3/4 angle, although the drawing philosophies are different. Bert Dodson says don't worry about your line quality being shit, just focus on seeing and observing above everything else.In my opinion the natural progression after Eviston's Art & Science course is his Art & Science of figure drawing course. As for perspective, expanding on that is worth it if you really want to get into drawing good backgrounds with a sense of depth to them. If you want to focus primarily on drawing characters, just make sure you know how to draw, rotate, distort and combine simple volumes. If you want to learn perspective in further detail, watch the Marshall videos.
>>6199681I think you may benefit from studying muscular anatomy and how it changes depending on how the body articulates/flexes, particularly in the shoulders and chest area. For example his right chest muscle (pectoral) with the raised arm should be stretched upward and flattened out (see picrel), because the pectoral muscles connect to the front of the shoulder muscles (deltoids). Whenever you raise your arms this causes your pecs to flatten out. You can also see in the picrel that due to the angle of the pose, the deltoid is only barely visible from the rear because it is obscured by the arm muscles and pectorals.https://youtu.be/CGBvbYEtwH8This vid has a pretty good guide on shoulder anatomy, and groups it together with the back, chest and arm muscles, since they all work together.
>when you see yourself improving yet you feel nothingwhy even bother
>>6199902so quit lol
>>6199895thanks for the reply, anoni really have no idea what's the content of keys other than its about observational drawing still, i'll give it a try and might skip the things i've already known from brent's to save timealso some anon suggest and even loomis (from his book) to some extent that i need to learn perspective before doing construction which is why after learning obsv. drawing my next stop would be perspective then followed by construction
>>6199910if you've been doing brent's course, you've learned enough linear perspective to get into figure drawing.
Do illustrators like loomis paint the color in their work like a normal painter or do they use some other toolset? Wondering what the best way to get into color is.

>>6200174>>6199680I think it was the perspective. I'm using a bunch of references, including Anatomy for Sculptors, and was trying to take a flat hand reference for shape and proportion, but adjust it to a natural hand pose with slightly bent fingers, causing the fingers to extend out as far as they would when flat even though they aren't. A lot of people doing 3D tend to throw the reference underneath their model and just make the silhouette match exactly, but that seems like a bad crutch to me, and like something that will slow my progress long-term. It's important to me to really develop a good eye for form.

The only difference between someone with downs (which isn't real) and a 'regular' person is just the fact that one of them is too lazy to use their brain. I bet he doesn't even believe in bacterial infections simply because antibiotics are often prescribed when not strictly necessary.
>>6200478>age (31)Why on Earth do you think that's part of the issue? The only reason most of the old masters started as children (or "started" as in joining an art community, college or apprenticeship in their late teens or early twenties, having been self-taught up to that point) is that most people who would become masters were those with an inborn PASSION for artistry, as even during the era of patronage it was not an easy path through life for most. These were men who became artists because as children or adolescents in an environment where they had many choices of what work to which their hands would be dedicated (as in the case of da Vinci) or even in an environment where they were meant to be doing something radically different (as in the case of Michelangelo), they chose to dedicate their time to painting the things they saw. If you were not like this, and you want to attain mastery, rather than being a defeatist dwelling on the things you think might hold you back, the lesson I would take from their stories is instead that you should examine why exactly you wish to create art now when you did not as a child. Nothing is holding you back, but if you're starting at 31 something tells me that some social trend, rather than genuine passion, has stoked you to pursue this. The handful of names who started later in life mostly ended up doing art as an amateur (regardless of the fact that they became very proficient at it) after retirement, a career shift or a loss of another hobby, like Charles Dellschau and Grandma Moses. These were people who did not pursue drawing and painting out of an inborn passion for it before other subjects, but to fill a hollow that formed in their later lives.
>>6200513>comparing infections to taking medication because you have shit concentration and refuse to address it properlyamerimutts
>draw a gesture 3 times>turns out you memorize itso it is like this huhthis is what "drawing from imagination" is like?
>>6200522Yes. When you draw something several times, you store it in a 'visual library' which allow you to recall it when necessary. That's pretty much what learning to draw is. Of course there is mechanical skill involved, but what takes time is learning to exchange you 'symbols' for the real thing.Nice work, anon. Keep it up. You're gonna make it.
>>6200522Expanding your visual library to the point of gestures you've drawn before become ingrained is part of it yeah
He told me to try it myself and all I have is an abomination. Andrew Loomis you conniving bastard.
>>6199414I don't care if they're fake. They look great.
This Loomis guy might've been onto something
>>6200532>>6200529>>6200521Loomis is SHIT but you're literally doing the only thing he tells you not to - mindlessly copy his shit. Everything you posted looks flat as hell and completely ignores the point of the book.
>>6200529>>6200532Very nice, anon. You made heads with faces in perspective with recognizable facial features drawn from imagination. Now just draw more, and try to keep in mind the things that went wrong with these ones. Then do the same another 100 times and you'll see rapid improvement.
>>6200518I've always had artistic inclinations, be it drawing/doodling as a kid, playing the guitar/bass or even painting miniatures and making dioramas. The thing is, for some reason i've decided to come back to drawing after 13 years of not doing it and I've found myself I have a complete lack of focus due to how mentally fatigued I'm left after work. The other artistic hobbies I used to have werent so taxing (I didnt set myself the purpose of actually learning how to do it well) which is why im feeling so disheartened right now.As of purpose, the WHY, I dont really have one.As I said I always had artistic (even if tasteless) inclinations.I dont intend to work as an artist (altough I wouldnt mind, I really despise my job) and I take it as a hobby, but I desire to actually learn.Turns out that 'actually learning' how to draw is a job in itself.
>>6200478>>6200487>>6199230it's okay to be a hobbyist and draw whenever you like, you don't owe anybody on the planet a goddamn thing.
>>6200535Why do you have to learn how to draw? Just draw, m80. If it is something you enjoy, just enjoy it. Drawing with an empty mind is pretty relaxing. Do you enjoy playing sports? I'm shit at football, and if I compared myself to pros I am absolutely worthless. That doesn't stop it from being fun when I play with some buddies once in a blue moon.
>>6200535Why are you bothering then? Do you want to draw your funny quirky OC? Do you plan on getting commissions in the future? Maybe it's just a hobby? It sounds like you're learning art just because you're bored.
>>6200030https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visual_processing_abnormalities_in_schizophreniaHave you actually been diagnosed schizo? I still don't understand the following illusion and study but apparently it has to do with how the brain processes edges and in schizos its different so they don't fall for the illusion whereas a normal person will think the back of the mask is protruding forward even when they consciously try to see the back as the hollow negative protrusion.
>>6200553also another cool study is this one where faces dont look weird even if the eyes and mouth are flipped the wrong way when the face is upside down.
>>6200533>flat as hellYou can't blame me this is not my fault. Clearly, Andrew Loomis has misguided me.>>6200534Thanks, and may you be blessed by Loomis as well.
>>6200471It's really fucking bad but i'm too drunk to do it betterhopefully you'll understand what i'm trying to say
>>6200570Not that anon, but thanks for sharing. Had no problems understanding your explanation, so you're good on that front.
>>6200522It's the first step, drawing from memory. When you remember a lot of different things in a lot of different configurations, you gain two abilities: Mixing elements of those things to create new things and elements of those configurations to create new configurations (eg inventing poses from imagination; of course since there's a fairly small number of "natural" poses if you push that beyond reasonable limits you end up drawing jojo or mannerism pose shit), and being able to vividly imagine things you see in different configurations or from different angles that you cannot actually see. By benchmarking what you have seen based on your cumulative experience paying closer-than-usual attention to things, you're able to make reasonable inferences about perspectives that are not available to you or subjects that do not exist at all. With gesture the reason people stress lines of action or lines of force so much is that once you understand those it makes drawing CONVINCING poses from imagination a lot easier. You may not understand why, but a pose where the force isn't being distributed anywhere just looks stiff and floaty no matter how much you bend the limbs, how much motion you put into your lines or anything else. Even when you're literally drawing floating or hanging figures, it's the sense that gravity is tugging on any limp part, or that parts are being pushed by water currents, that helps sell it.
I haven't drawn much this week. But I'll do better next week. Definitely better next week...
Apologies for the shit lighting in advance, nothing in PS made it look any better. I'm still studying proper things, honest.Just needed a break with something else learning art is all about schedule control after all...
>>6200570Thank you for the imput anon, and don't worry, it reads well enough. I was assuming this was the method you were reffering to. But I haven't seen it anywhere else and I think it might just be an optical illusion. (sorry if I'm being a bother, I only wish to help). In picrel, i created 2 squares like you did, but in a 3d app (to make sure that the perspective would be correct), and checked your method. It doesn't like up. I checked multiple views, sometimes it doesn't even converge in the right place.
>>6200598Good idea. If you're always practicing and never draw the things you actually want you'll burn out real fast.
>>6200553I can see it both ways.>>6200554And in this one I'm familiar with the illusion (it becomes obvious when pointed out, but can trick the eye at a glance a lot of the time when well-executed), but this is a bad example since the original face is so uncanny. Because it's so wide and fat, the top lip doesn't look like a top lip, but two bottom lips side-by-side, and the extremely puffy lower eyelid and smooth top eyelid makes the eye as a whole look more natural when flipped even right-side-up (there are also some dynamics to do with the angle at which you see the eyelashes but that's less important here).Anyway, not that anon but I had visual and auditory hallucinations paired with severe migraines in the absence of hallucinogenic drug use when I was a teenager, but around the time I stopped growing those things went away. Apparently a lot of adolescents suffer from symptoms of schizophrenia, psychopathy and/or autism that vanish in adulthood, which is also why psychiatrists can't diagnose someone under 18 with ASPD (there are droves of teens that are textbook psychopaths, but literally grow out of it and become empathetic adults, with an ASPD diagnosis being potentially life-defining and -ruining, though it's certainly a good idea to keep an eye on them to make sure they DO grow out of it).>>6200588Cute!
>>6200603Is this perspective or orthogonal?
value study. been tryin forever to get better values but its hard.
>>6200615It is perspective, just a somewhat small FoV cone. Here's another pic of 2 more examples. ( Blue lines are leading to the VPs, red lines are marking your method, green lines are marking the actual line from one corner to another.) As you can see, depending of the FoV, it seems to work, while in others, it's not even close. The right image is closer to what you drew, and it almost lines up.
>>6200603You were doing it wrong,
>>6200629uhm. That's not what I was trying to showcase. Look at >>6200570's tutorial. I was not trying to extend the two planes, I was trying to see if, were I to attempt to transfer the vertical square to the horizonal plane (using the method in that tutorial), would that work.
>>6200628Notice how the blue middle line, which i have drawn at exactly 90 degrees, does not alight with the yellow middle line. I drew the tutorial and original image in the 2 point perspective, since the yellow vertical lines are tilted in this image, it means that it's in a different perspective.
>>6200644>it means that it's in a different perspective. You will need to account for the 3rd vanishing point in transfer and duplication
i think perspective sucks
>>6200661>>6200644My bad yes, I forgot 3d does that. I made this example specifically to be 2 point, by putting the observer at the same height as the object. It still doesn't quite line up. Where did you get this information that this technique would work.
>>6199315Anon, what's your most honest and brutal critique on this?

>>6200678>fkey 2010/10What did Anon mean by this?
>>6200688Did you account for the lens distortion?
>>6200693this is orthogonal view. By definition there is none.
>>6200675It sucks. The character just all around is bad. Anatomy proportions etc. Piano isn't balanced appropriately and while the floating notes is a fun idea they need to have some sense of rhythm and weight if you want to bring them out like this.
>>6200697then idkhow did bridgeman do it?
>>6200688To add to this, I even found the sweet spot where they line up. But as you can see, if I rotate it a little to the left or right, the two lines start to diverge ever so slightly. So it would see if you draw from this common, 45 degree-ish bellow horizon pov, it might seem to work, but as you rotate, it stops.
>>6200700Okay
>>6200675Very boring pillow shading.
>>6200701You mean Scott Robertson? Well he admitted there is no easy way. My pic in >>6200471 show the part where he demonstrates it. If you look carefully, he draws an elipse, knowing that an elipse is a circle in perspective, then draws the box around it. (Since a rectangle drawn around a circle is a square.) Not the other way around. This assumes you have experience drawing elipses (he says to practice this a lot.) For further study, the way scott suggest to draw a perfect cube is also by basing the faces around elipses.
>>6200707>pillow shadingI learned something today, thanks :)
>>6200702>if I rotate it a little to the left or right, the two lines start to diverge ever so slightlyof course they'll diverge when you forgot about the 3rd vanishing point in 1 and 3rd case
>>6200719
>>6200702>So it would see if you draw from this common, 45 degree-ish bellow horizon pov, it might seem to work, but as you rotate, it stopsYeah, anon, you're changing the perspective. Do you not understand how 3d software/irl works?
how is perspective real
>>6200720Drew all the lines from the middle top point to better illustrate
>>6200707That's literally not pillow shading. There are some missing shadows but it's clear that the lightsource is above her. Plus all the shadows have hard edges. Pillowshading is when all the shadows are on the "outside" with the highlights in the "middle" (so there's no clear lightsource; even if the viewer WERE the lightsource, the edges would still be illuminated) and all the edges are soft.
