The general thread for Manga / manga-styled comic-making, manga-style illustration and related comic work.

Support each other and talk about your work or the work of others that excites you. Inking, character design, paneling / layout, writing, planning, and other discussions are all welcome.
Post resources, questions, in-progress pages, breakdowns of other works, etc. If a work is not yours, credit the maker (unless it's fucking obvious like a full page of One Piece or something).
Thanks to everyone for making /mmg/ a level-headed and helpful place. Remember, drawing and making comics and manga are difficult endeavors, and we're all in this struggle together.

Some western / indie publishers of Manga:

Saturday AM ( https://www.saturday-am.com/ )
> Digital indie magazine, seems to be on the up-and-up
> Open submissions for long-form series; also distributes series currently being published elsewhere.
> Regularly publishes one-shots, making it a good potential outlet for already-finished work.

Noir Caesar ( https://www.noircaesar.com/ )
> Focuses on black (specifically African-American) content, but seems willing to publish anyone good enough.
> Seemingly series-based only.
> No "magazine" style updates; series are updated on their own schedule.
> Seems less regular than Saturday AM, but also seems larger in terms of readership.

Oni Press ( https://onipress.com/ )
> Technically indie, but at this point large enough by comic standards to be mentioned in the same breath as other publishers.

Antarctic Press ( https://antarctic-press.myshopify.com/ )
> Longtime large-indie publisher of OEL / manga-esque books.
> Seemingly taking submissions at present if http://www.antarctic-press.com/html/submissions.php is anything to go on.

Yen Press ( https://yenpress.com/ )
> Started out as a small indie publisher of original / Korean material, and has grown reasonably popular since.
> As of 2016, it is also one of the western arms of the Kadokawa Corporation, with Kadokawa owning a 51% stake.
> Editorial inquiries can apparently be sent to yenpress@yenpress.com, however, they apparently are not open to new submissions at this time.

Viz Media / Viz Originals ( https://www.viz.com/originals )
> *The* western manga publisher.
> Currently in the exploratory stages of setting up an English label.
> Submissions are open and several books have been announced. However, progress on the label seems to be moving very slowly.
> Still might be worth a shot anyway.

Shrine Comics ( https://shrinecomics.com/ )
> Small indie manga publisher
> Seemingly attempting to make the transition to physical volumes
> Allows crossposting to other sites
>>
Other open comic publishers:

Dark Horse ( https://www.darkhorse.com )
>Dark Horse still welcomes your submissions, and all submissions will still be reviewed, just as they always have been.
>All unsolicited story/series proposals must have a full creative team on board. Writer-only proposals will not be reviewed.

Image comics ( https://imagecomics.com/ )
>Image Comics only publishes creator-owned material. They do not contract creators; they’re only interested in publishing original content for which you would retain all rights.
>Image Comics publishes creator-owned/creator-generated properties and THEY DON’T PAY PAGE RATES. Image takes a small flat fee off the books published, and it will be the responsibility of the creators to determine the division of the remaining pay between their creative team members.

Drawn and quarterly ( https://drawnandquarterly.com/ )
>Please email a low resolution PDF with at least 20 pages of comics and cover letter to submissions. Do not send dropbox links, scripts, or proposals. Please read our submissions FAQ.

Fantagraphics ( https://www.fantagraphics.com/ )
>submission page: https://www.fantagraphics.com/pages/faq

Top Shelf Productions ( https://www.topshelfcomix.com/ )
>Regarding submissions, we're easy. Just email us a download link of what you'd like us to review. NOTE: We cannot accept cover letters, plot synopses, or scripts unless they are accompanied by a minimum of 10-20 completed pages (i.e., fully inked and lettered comic book pages).

How many mangaka are there who got their first publications in their late 20s with already some years making art before? The Usogui guy might be an example but early Usogui itself looks way more beg-tier than expected.

>way more beg-tier than expected
Please stop using this retarded /ic/ terminology. The work looks wonky and inconsistent but it utilizes many techniques a beginner would not be familiar with and the line control is far, far beyond that of a beginner. I'm not defending it, this manga looks like ass (I don't even really like the later art, far too tone-heavy), just arguing against the usage of nonsensical terminology.

>>6375640
Even that's not "beg-tier". If that person was a beginner then they were a fucking savant. An obvious sign that an artist isn't a beginner is that you can tell what they're trying to fucking convey. Kind of important in comics, no?

Conflating beginner work with shoddy/inconsistent/wonky/weird looking work is completely wrong and gives actual beginners an inflated idea of what a "beginner"'s work should look like.

>>6375637
Anyway to answer the question, probably quite a few of "alternative" mangaka whose drawings don't really need to look super pretty or refined. This doesn't mean it's impossible, but the mindset of editors is that they assume everybody who wants to become a mangaka does so because they love manga and could see themselves doing nothing else (because who would willingly become a professional mangaka with all that entails without truly loving it?). Therefore, if it is assumed that you either don't have it in you to make something interesting/good enough, or you're just lazy and in either case you're not up to snuff. There are cases where people have pivoted into manga from other fields such as the Usogui guy, the Ranking of Kings guy, the Maid In Abyss guy and so on, but it's generally quite rare and exceptional. This may be because it's really, really difficult on its own, and it may be because of the editor's mindset regarding old farts in or past their 30s.
>>
Threadly reminder that perspective is key. Your drawings can be horribly stylized as long as they’re in perspective it will work
>>
>>6375673
But that's very appealingly stylized.
>>
>>6375673
The perspective is shit, though.
If it was actually a well drawn background you'd have a point, but that requires skill.

texture fill, also called patterns or just tones
how it's done depends on what software you're using but in krita it's a checkbox under the options for the fill tool, then the texture selection is next to the gradient box in the toolbar

I dig your art, especially the backgrounds and screentone. The Islamic style architecture is interesting to see. The story's a bit slow for my taste, but I'll keep reading to see where it goes.

Hard to tell because potato quality but it seems like he place a vertical line screentone and then manually hatched on top of that with a ruler.

>>6376330
Your point is that perspective can be artistic, but the image contradicts that by still having correct perspective, not 100% perfect, but it doesn't look like anything is out of place.
>>6375673
In this, the perspective is not only slanted and curved for some reason. But it's also obviously incorrect, as the foreground is out of perspective.
That's not artistic liberty, that's being lazy!

In that case it's 3d.
Generally though the hard bit is figuring out what is actually in the environment you're drawing, which is more of a design problem than an actual illustration problem. The rest is just basic perspective and keeping things in proportion.

Thanks for the feedback, anon. I was trying to build up pace, but I can try to push events to happen faster, especially now that the girls are in a bad situation.

Is there a manga you consider normal or even fast paced? Want to see how they present things.
>>
>>6376881
I expect a sensical perspective instead of one lazily drawn. If you’re fine with low quality art, then that's you. But, I atleast expect good perspective.
>>
>>6376975
I can't think of anything specific... but all sorts of people have their own writing style. I get that you want the world building to show, but it's like 20ish pages untill we see the main characters. I feel like a chapter doesn't need to be it's own arc in itself, but it should have some tension building that makes you want to keep turning the pages. Early Gantz is fun, you get a sense of the main characters right away, some dramatic tension happens, then the chapter ends on a cliff hanger/mystery, which i think invites speculation/world building ideas from fans instead of being shown everything.

Volumes 1 and 2 are about 220 pages and 5-6 chapters each. Volume 3 is 200 pages in so far and will probably be about 220-230 when It's done. Volume 3 finishes an arc started at the beginning of Volume 2, so I want to make sure Volume 3 doesn't end on a cliffhanger or in the middle of the big climax.

Any reason not to use AI assisted art?

>feed a model enough images of your character
>pose a 3D model
>have the AI generate an image of your character over the 3D model in the desired pose
>manual adjustement of output
>cut and paste into panels

I was agains AI art, but then I realized I, the real me, has no idea how to decompress and denoise the input coming in via the optic nerve or which nerve to activate to move the hand. I know I could use tre AI to write the story but these generators leave a lot to be desired and paneling AI, while possible seems like waste of time.

Honor and dignity were invented by the upper classes to keep you down. Note that the elites never had too much of an issue keeping honor and dignity as they always could just throw cash at the problem unless it was a trully collosal fuckup while it was serious efford for everyone beneath them.

Animals in the forrest have no dignity, they just do what feels good, does not screw them in the midterm and leaves them options in the long term (as far as they can tell, they are stupid beasts). They are much happier than men.

Besides, can you eat dignity?

AI is absolutely handicapped when it comes to creating storytelling. Simply put, it can't. AI art is only good for creating a select subset of very specific images - portraits etcetera - and abstract piles. Those do not a comic make.

So, yes, the reason is that it's a gimmick that will take more time for a worse product, AND won't cause you to improve as an artist, unlike literally any other technique. Even tracing 3d models.

Don't buy into fads. You're better than the common rabble.
>>
>>6381089
>AI art is only good for creating a select subset of very specific images - portraits etcetera - and abstract piles.
Computer scientists have been talking about how the range that AI can output is severly limited, since it has to distill patterns from billions of images and can never branch out like human creativity can.

In other words, it's formulaic and will always be formulaic, which is the death for comics

i think you need a lot of practice yourself in both line work and understanding basic construction. it still looks amateur as fuck with how you scribble everywhere without even considering the different planes of the object. your so called “line weight” is also inconsistent and all over the place and resembles more like literal chicken scratches.

that zoomer is young, he’ll either learn on his own that his shit sucks and get better or he’ll drop the hobby for something else because he got a long life ahead of him. in some ways he is already ahead of YOU.

you on the other hand self proclaim yourself as a professional with these subpar work. if YOU don’t improve you’re going to have a rough time finding another gig just cause you got a lucky with some literal who. i’ll bet the “salary” pays peanuts compared to the work you’re getting.

Loomis - and artists from his time - were big on projection. It was just how it was done back then, and it still very much is, but usually with the luxury of 3D models rather than just sucking it up and doing the graphs yourself.

Personally, I prefer other books from the era.
>>
>>6382662
I think its more that they just specified the technical and architectural aspects of perspective and structure. Its not a bad thing, but a lot of ADHD artists can't focus on that. Especially in the manga world, where you've got assistants often doing background work, and using 3D models, and photo manips and whatnot.

There have been threads before, but they usually get deleted. Some people are pretty receptive, but some people are pretty against it, so whatever. Its just generally not really allowed, and to some, not even really wanted.
>>
>>6384283
I haven't personally, but it's allowed (usually but not by rule) and I've seen some very skilled independent artists dump theirs, usually contest submissions. The response is almost exactly what you would expect from /a/, 90% "it's not manga if you're not japanese", a few armchair weebs giving useless critiques, and a handful of genuinely supportive and appreciative anons.

>>6384309 is a good demonstration of what you're going to face on /a/, the majority of /a/nons aren't interested in manga as a medium, it's become a consumer board full of consolewarring on par with the worst /ic/ crabs

I'm referring to people openly advertising their own work. Dog Nigga and Tekno being good examples of creators who intermittently make threads to advertise own stuff and then self-bump for hours (responding in a hostile manner to any negative feedback), usually dying when they go to sleep because the janitors/mods don't care if it's not a frog/wojakspammer thread.
/a/ is, on paper, only for works of japanese origin, whatever you want to call them. But that doesn't mean the rules will be enforced in a timely manner. I made a quest on /a/ back in 2020 and it lasted two threads and almost an entire week before the thread was deleted and I was banned.
And I certainly wouldn't expect to get any valuable feedback. Most of the posters on /a/ will be hostile by default and the few who give you the time of day hardly have any valuable wisdom to share.
>>
>>6384327
You can't really post NSFW on /co/ as it is a blue board. However, there are the /hyw/ threads on /co/ and they sometimes have a "/hyw/ after dark" thread on /aco/ where they post NSFW comics and images.

Though, in that respect, its pretty much better just to post here, with all the hoops you're jumping through to make that happen. And the /aco/ threads aren't nearly as lively or often.
>>
>>6384340
>Dog Nigga and Tekno
don't know either of them, guess I don't lurk /a/ enough, maybe that's for the best

have to agree with this unfortunately

I don't know if this exists, and I'm not sure if it's what >>6384283 had in mind, something like a cross between mangadex and a booru would be my ideal hobby manga community, lower social media aspect (maybe an attached forum), less strict on content, easy for readers to just casually browse and comment
not that I'm unhappy with these threads, /mmg/ is pretty comfy

Just print it the same way manga is formatted if you're going that route, but you still have to mind your gutters either way.
Look at how professionally translated and scanlated manga are done and use techniques from them.
It won't be confusing if you know how to panel. It also wouldn't hurt to include to a "How To Read" insert page at the beginning.

The tab with the layer is called "layer palette". Every time you create a mask it appears a thumbnail of the mask near the layer in the layer palette.
If you shift-click that thumbnail you turn the mask on and off.
If you alt-click that thumbnail you can turn on and off the color of the mask (a shade of blue).
IIRC by default the color is on when you create a frame, if you have multiple frames it can be annoying.

Then, to divide frames you have to use either the "divide frame BORDER" tool or the "divide frame FOLDER" tool. The one that doesn't create other layers, folders, and frames, is the first one.

I hope it's clearer now.

Hayai is inspired by Killua and Luck, He even uses electricity but he has a different color scheme. I still need to work on his hair to make it look more different maybe blue or something instead of grey. Pic related is when I tried to draw him more realistic. I also know I need to work on Jin's design so he doesnt look so much like Gojo. He has blonde hair and blood red eyes but I think in BW he still looks too similar he's supposed to be "perfect" in every way and look handsome but I ended up making Julius look better then him.

I am a native english speaker and write my comic in English so I illustrate it and print it going left to right instead of how translated manga are right to left. I feel like it would be more cringe to publish it left to right as if it's retranslated from Japanese when clearly it never was. If I do ever get it translated in to Japanese like I want to, the plan is to just flip the page art. It might look really weird, but it's the best that can be done.
>>
>>6389254
>I feel like it would be more cringe to publish it left to right
*I meant it would be more cringe to publish it right to left imo

I see it as a comic heavily inspired by manga, but I'm also inspired by other comics from different places. Some people are really strict about the definition difference between comics from the east and west, but as far as I know manga just means "comics" in Japanese and Japanese people refer to western comics as "manga", so I don't stress about it.
>>
>>6389254
Don't flip that's retarded. There's a reason publishers stopped doing it. If you're marketing primarily towards a western audience then format it normally and call it a graphic novel because that's what its. It's not manga unless it's read right to left.

You can't write a story, period, that doesn't invite shipfaggotry. People have shipped historical figures after watching WWII documentaries. Fujos can mostly be avoided by simply not having men in your series, or at least making them more like men and not like boys. But the thing is, if you have a fanbase active enough to HAVE fujos and HAVE shipfaggotry, you have already succeeded beyond what ninety nine percent of people will ever accomplish. Plan for success, don't make backup plans for success.

Have your characters already in a relationship with a woman.
Keep those relationships in the background or kill their lovers off if the plot allows it.
You're making shounen not some romcom. I'm opting to doing this plus have most
males show some interest in women.
But, remember that most fujos are mentally ill when it comes to men.
And will ignore all hetero behavior to implant their homoerotic fantasies.

My main art goals are reaching pro level at illustration itself however, but something like this sounds like a fun plan. If anything goes well, I hope to finish the comic in 2 or 3 years.

I'm going to guess pretty fucking low. Gotta be exceptionally productive to keep your serialization. Ain't got no time for vices like drugs, you can only really do what you can acquire easily and can do while remaining work-functional.
Plus japan has a huge, huge stigma around drugs. No epic weed gamers over there.

a vice like meth keeps your more productive and meth is the #1 drug in Japan. It would explain all the sleepless nights these mangaka have.

>The yakuza's dominance in Japan’s entertainment industry is a subject that has long been a taboo. (In Japan, the yakuza are quasi-legal entities with office buildings and fan magazines. Their existence is not illegal and they are regulated like corporate entities. The 22 designated crime groups have roughly 80,000 members.)

They have their hands on all entertainment in Japan, obviously they would not leave a billion dollar corner of it untouched.

No. It's normal to cringe at ideas you had years ago, but it sounds like you're just being far, far too self-critical. One day isn't enough to distance yourself enough from an idea to really have a retrospective view of it.
>how do mangaka write "super attack!!!" without killing themselves?
I would imagine they just remind themselves that they're making comics for boys and not to take it too seriously. Or they just don't write stuff like that in the first place.

I finally understand what this guy was saying now.

When you draw a box with the panel tool, it makes a black square with a blue background around it, and making more squares will make more blue backgrounds, very annoying.

Also each time you make a box, it adds two whole things to the layer tab, which is VERY annoying.. Previously I was making a new box for each panel and the layers tab would quickly fill up with dozens of layers.

So the solution is to first hold ALT and click on the black square showing the preview on the layer "frame 1". This removes the blue background, you have to click the little preview image only to do this.

Now the cool thing, there's a subset beside the panel tool's tab that lets you cut frames. And now you can make boxes way faster than just drawing them individually. There are two tools here: "Divide frame border" cuts them without adding more bullshit layers, and "divide frame folder" makes new layers.

Now the question is, why would I use this instead of just the simple line tool and make my own squares? Seems like a whole lot of trouble for nothing.

Do you guys like the screentoning process? I've found I enjoy it more than ordinary coloring at this point, but I think I might also be going insane.

Also are you guys also doing this entirely along or are you in discords or something. I have 0 associates who do anything like this, despite having several who aspire to try one day, and I think it may also be driving me insane.
>>
>>6397506
I think screentones are fun, and I dont really talk to other comic maker because its depressing. Seeing people who were at it for years and got nowhere just makes me sad. I read their comic and its cool, but I want to be more popular than them which makes me feel guilty.
>>
>>6397506
>Also are you guys also doing this entirely along or are you in discords or something.
Mostly alone, but I interact with other comic creators on social media, Discord, and plebbit. Twitch and YouTube is also pretty good if you can find comic makers in a sea of vtubers. It's a good way to meet other comic makers but also readers (and potential buyers.)
>>
>>6397506
I don't do screentones I find it really hard to understand how to use them. I draw comics alone but I do have one person IRL who read my comics for me and sometimes I post a page or two on /ic/.
>>
>>6397506
>Do you guys like the screentoning process?
I tend to keep it quick and dirty. Whenever I'm working on something with a lot of tone work it feels like I'm just going through a checklist to finish the toning.

>Also are you guys also doing this entirely along or are you in discords or something
I've been doing this for approaching a decade and it was only very recently that I've had any interaction with others who make manga-styled stuff at all. Comics are just a lonely pursuit, unless you're lucky enough to have friends around you to work with or are successful enough to hire people to work alongside you. Even then, most of the time you'll be drawing on your own.
>>
I’m interested in how you guys would create a dialogue heavy manga? Like I was just watching a anime series called Monogatari , and every episode is pretty much mostly dialogue , characters sitting around having conversations. This also reminded me of HunterXHunter, which recently has gotten some criticism for its amount of dialogue/words. Which makes me wonder, How would you guys create a dialogue heavy manga where people are mostly just talking a lot? Would you try to condense every sentence as much as possible? Or maybe have extremely slow pacing so each chapter isn’t too wordy?
>>
>>6398008
I would just make it have interesting dialogue, due to translation, Monogatari is a bit boring since a lot of the puns and jokes aren't translated properly. So, I'd focus on the strengths of English to make it interesting.
>>
>>6398008
What's the point of the pictures then? Just write a book. Talking heads are not fun to look at over and over and over.
>>
>>6397506
I used to do manual screen tones the old fashioned way, with a craft knife. But they have become too expensive to import, so I just draw straight black and white or use ink washes now since I'm not switching to digital. Tones are an art unto themselves, it's cool to get all the way down the rabbit hole with them, I have seen some unreal effects.

I work completely alone, I have only had a couple of professionals give me any kind of critique since none of my friends read comics or manga and if they do, they are not interested in the subject matter I want to make.
>>
>>6398008
Just make sure it's compelling. There's plenty of movies that are mostly just people talking that work, it's the same for comics. You wouldn't make the "just write a book!" argument for movies, would you? Of course not, because they're totally different experiences. Comics are the same, even very text heavy comics are a different experience from reading a book.

>>6398017
Comics are a medium where you can make all kinds of visual metaphors and imaginative sequences around what would otherwise just be characters talking, but I would argue that you don't even necessarily need to get all that creative to make it work. Just use the visual medium to tell the story -- seeing a character frown and describing a character frowning are two experiences, so use that to the advantage of your work.

I remember a few threads ago, people got kind of interested in that book that had interviews with WSJ mangaka. One of the things in there recommended doing two page short manga based off prompts. I feel like this general has been even slower than normal. I'm curious if it would be a good idea to try and figure out some decent prompts, to try and drive activity. Of course, maybe people are just busy working on their own projects, in which case there's no real issue here.

Curious if anyone is interested. I thought it might be good to see how other people work on things, and try to figure out what you might lack (or be better at than normal) to try and improve.
>>
>>6398875
Here are your prompts:

>Sex_with_ducks
>Gaypond
>Hotdrakes
>Hardcore_duckrape
>Gay_Duck_Domination

Happy drawing!

>I've been doing this for approaching a decade and it was only very recently that I've had any interaction with others who make manga-styled stuff at all. Comics are just a lonely pursuit
This tracks. I guess it's just one of those things- even if you can assemble a couple of artist friends, not many of them will be irrational enough to throw themselves into the absolute grindfest that is comics itself. Rough.

To anybody working with webtoons 800pixel (times 1280 pixel) wide format I was wondering if you chop it up into 1280 parts before or after drawing it, if you draw at a higher resolution then scale down and how many pages a typical bi-weekly web comic is?

I don't often frequent these threads, so forgive me for not already being familiar with the people here and their respective stories. I'm already interested in your story just from that one sentence. Can you tell me more?
>>
>>6399960
I’m not a professional, but I can try to give you an idea. For one, make the source of angst something worth the term, angst. When we talk manga, evident examples are say, Kurapika’s clan being killed. That might be too extreme, but not many people would criticize him for it. Particularly because it drives his motivation. He angsts a bit, but he also acts. Without knowing the specifics of your story, it’s difficult to say how that can be applied, but I think it leads into general advice.

While you can make a character show emotion, whether it’s angst, sorrow, or something else, ensuring they are proactive helps to mitigate any issues people may have with it. I feel this can be done whether the angst drives the motivation, or even if the motivation is what is causing the angst.
>>

I don't use this board much, but if I recall, the bump limit is around 300. It seems some people want to do this, so coming up with a couple of prompts now would be a good idea if people wanted to do this next thread. A couple of ideas:

>A person goes fishing
>A person meets a ghost

Kind of basic, I'm no good with figuring out prompts that can be handled shortly. The ones from the book mentioned are:

>Two high school boys on their way home come across a purse snatcher and put a stop to the crime (how they do it is up to you).
and
>An employee (of any gender) who's just been fired from their job is moping in a public park. A concerned child gives them a stag beetle to cheer them up, which kind of works.

These two are much more specific, but actually can work. I'd like other opinions on prompts. While the open-ended ones are fine, the more specific ones sort of force creativity in a different way. But if people were gonna do this, I feel it'd be good to do something different than what has already been done in the threads.
>>
>>6400268
Thank you, that's solid advice. He does have something extremely traumatic that happened in his past, which ties into the main plot, however he doesn't have any real "motivation" he's more of a plot device than anything because he has a mystery aspect to him. He's a sympathetic character as well as a loose cannon for the MC, like he's a person that people skirt around to not push any buttons, I guess to put it bluntly like that weird schizo kid in school you're not sure if his family has access to guns. But MC sympathizes with him.

I hope that's okay, he does get proactive in the plot a bit because he has a lot of power to bring to the table as well as other resources other characters can't get, which is all about his relationship with the MC, but it does feel weird to have characters that are just plot devices now that I really think about it...
>>
>>6381833
Lmao. Not if >>6381782 is your work you aren’t.
>>
>>6401116
If I was to extend the first two prompts.

>There was an accident while your protagonist went fishing.
and
>The employee at a haunted house ends up meeting a real ghost.

Maybe not as detailed as those other two, but they seem fresh enough, while giving a more specific direction. I'm curious about how others in the thread feel, are those decent enough prompts for the 2 page short comic practice? You can pick one, or both (or whatever you want, honestly). It's just to get you to draw.

A few questions:
Is this art quality *good enough* or should I keep grinding for awhile before starting on a real project?

I'm using krita right now, if any anons have experience with both krita and CSP, how much better is CSP and is it worth the price?

Is it realistic to make a living as an indie comic artist or is this more of a passion thing for most people?
Tanks in advance.
