well, how its been doing copying for you guys to your imagination drawings?

>>6567215It's alright anon. I've made plenty of obominations while drawing pictures for the last 2'ish years. It's not all over. I used to copy FLCL screenshots. It's all about having fun.
>copy an artist you like :)I have too many I like with too many different styles and I let myself get decision paralysis. What now? Go back to fundies and grind empty boxes until I can figure out which artists I actually like and why I like them? Copy art at random without thinking about it even if it causes my bad, nonexistent style to evolve in an aesthetically pleasing direction that locks off my ability to commit further to a different one because I'm an amateur artist and not a professional who can emulate many styles while retaining their own?

absolute beginner here that wants to draw anime shit. what else should i do other than drawabox and keys to drawing as someone who wants to draw anime characters? I want to try and roughly plan out my pathway. Keys to drawing has been interesting for observation, and drawabox is helping with fundamentals as a complete beginner (I couldn't really draw straight lines before). Is there anything else I should consider doing along with these two? I'm trying to be mindful to not take in too much at a time. On the side, I do copies to the best of my ability of my fave official art drawings from anime magazines on yandere
>>6567456Just out of curiosity, do you happen to have an inspiration folder?
>>6567458I have a bunch of screenshots of my fave animators' work and official art illustrations from magazines saved but not all organised in one folder. I should probably do that one day
>>6567456Speaking of copying things, I forgot to ask how would eyes like Hyouka's be approached? Well, eyes on general. Would they be drawn from the shoulder or wrist? It's easier to do with the wrist for me (though with chicken scratching), but I can't imagine how an egg shape eye like this is done in one stroke from the shoulder. https://yande.re/post?tags=hyouka+nishiya_futoshi+
>>6567466Fuck, forgot to post image

Is it possible to overcome perfectionism? I look at pictures like this, zero in on the hands, and then think about how I shut down if I find myself encounter this problem. I don't think about how I could stylize it, I don't think about anything besides the error and berate myself and never get to the point where I color it all in and post it to be something popular that people will repost for years to come.
>>6569983yeah, get a job doing art it will force you to deadlines
So can I just pause anime, copy what I see, and then eventually get good?Feel like I'm too much of a brainlet for video courses and such.
>>6570029u have to draw ur own anime while ur at it
>>6570029Copying artwork makes you better at copying artwork. You'll eventually be able to recreate almost anything you see with a very high accuracy after a few months. It's not a useless skill and if you have fun copying then do that. But you won't be able to draw anything from imagination at all without it looking like prebeg even after months or even years of copying
>>6570103Isn't drawing from imagination mostly just a matter of correct anatomy before you go back to drawing things like they are meant to look anyway?
>>6570144Most people don't build a visual library by copying artwork. They just copy lines and improve accuracy. It's like watching a magician doing a trick over and over again, if you don't understand it you won't be able to replicate it no matter how many times you see it. So no, just copying stuff and anatomy is most likely not enough to draw appealing girls from imagination
>>6570186Then how do you draw from imagination?
how the hell do you draw limbs
>>6567162>>6567162Been copying anime for a while now, am pretty decent at it. Is just copying okay? How do I learn to apply construction to animeheads, should I just read loomis or is there a better guide? I've been copying by eye and while I'm much better than when I started, all I can do is copy.
>>6570144don't be like me that i fall into copying trap,i mean copying is great practice and can learn to breakdown artists (and actually make your own method to do it) but i copying too much that my creativity is dead. whenever i try to do art i just look into other artists art/pinterest and "oh i like this picture" let's draw it and tweak some of the part like arm, hand to make it not look like source.sure this will help you as a beginner but i recommend you try to practice what you want to draw from your mind too. i start to realize this when i try to make my own comic/manga and results that i can't imagine shit . That's when i realize that i've never train to draw from my mind. i just look into other artists art and steal composition, pose and tweak it into new one. sure this will help you creating new artwork but it actually not from your imagination.try to practice to draw from your mind too and use reference only when it come to fix mistake, details
>>6570314I'll devote a night of practice to imagination gesture drawing then.
>>6570307copying is a meme, everyone saying it are just fucking with you to make you waste your time holy shit, how nobody realizes this, is pretty funny tho.
>>6567868Try some different pen settings first. The whole point of a g pen is you can effectively vary the thickness in a way that stays in control and looks good for you. If the thickness is wobbling in and out or is unresponsive and you have to push hard to just get a weighted line, change your pressure curve. If a pencil brush already works for you, try to copy that brush as closely as possible but make it a pen. Based on that pencil brush's settings this might just be removing texture and changing opacity. Or you might have to modify another pen brush until it feels similar. But you like something about this pencil and how it responds to your pressure and speed.
>>6570297magic
>>6570447I've experimented with the pencil brushes and round watercolor sized down for line art but noticed my output looks shitty compared to when I just use default g-pen. What is so special about the g-pen (or pen type brushes in general) that most artists just either use it raw or make variations on it?
WIP MarisaFeel like I'm getting the hang of the face spacing and eyes. Guess it's just basic head construction that the eyes are on similar level, right?Still wonky, but I feel happier with it.
>>6570307>How do I learn to apply construction to animeheads, should I just read loomis or is there a better guide? Don’t get lied to by using shit like that. Just continue to copy anime and your favorite artist. >>6570438Fuck off constructoid
>>6570461I'm sorry anon but you'll have to give me your blog right now
>>6570501Ain't got a blog sadly, but thanks for the kind words, Anon!
>>6570320be sure to draw from copy too. since copying/studying is still a great way to learn secret or method from your favourite artists. but just don't blindly copy and still put what you learn to create your own from imagination. or else you'll make a habit of looking into other artists work to create something (like me) you should try to draw what you want and express>>6570438copying is not a meme if you use it right and understand how to breakdown it . example you want to know artists secret on how to stroke a brush or how they use tools.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AM69kS7y6Jc like this video. copying meanwhile thinking about how to do it by yourself i recently studying YD on how he use brush and kinda want to get a brush to achieve how his shading brushwork looks like. result is i get a brush output that looks like his works that suit my pen pressure but not exactly the same though. it maybe only me but as i studying/copying a lot i just know that you can't become copy machine you gotta learn and breakdown method by yourself, make your own tools even if you have that artist brushes results might not be the same since everyone use different pen pressure setting, weight ,hand stroke.know that YD just use default round brush with no fancy things but i gotta setting to make it suit with my hand pressure.
What if you both copy and learn constructionI'm going through Rinotuna's course and the fucker has 5 episodes of it dedicated to construction and the head one is literally just loomis with an anime coat of paint
>>6570549NOOOOOOOOOOOO YOU CAN'T DO THAT YOU CAN ONLY PICK ONE EVERYTHING IS BLACK AND WITHE!!!construction makes copying for learning how to draw animu useless since you can draw whatever is in your noodles.

>>6570287The answer to that question is pretty cancer but I'll tell you anyway. You have to learn to draw. That means you have to read up on all the various skills needed and actively try to learn them. But I do know a short cut on how to get better at drawing insanely fast. I'm talking about being able to draw cute and appealing girls easily in 3-6 months from imagination. By enjoying the process. >>6571409Everything, copy more anime
>>6571409You need to work on selling the form. For example, the collar looks like a sticker on a t-shirt even though you put that little bit of shading there. Try to think of how the real objects would lift off of the other things at different angles and it will help you get that 3D feeling.

>>6570590colors are really well donethe drawing is okay too but the features are in discordant perspectives like the far eye tells me her head is in that almost side profile view but the ear tells me she's in that 3/4 almost front shot view due to the back of the head being overlapped by it. also you didn't give her a jaw so the face feels very wide

So just keep copying? I gotta admit I'm getting discouraged but I won't stop. My copying is getting better, but the temptation to learn construction is bothering me, but I dont wanna WESTOID my shit up. It's hard, how do I know I'm learning? I can copy much better than a month ago. Faster too, but where do I go from here? How do I go BEYOND? I'm not gonna listen to that crab fag, I'm just gonna keep pushing.

>>6571798krenz said it best himself: after you study, recreate it from your own imagination. it's like a muscle. then apply the fundamentals to your own process of creation (you draw a head-like shape from your memory instead of from reference).you won't get better at imaginative drawing from just copying.
>>6571808>>6569288forgot to post again! heres the piece
>>6571798maybe try pick a specific artist and/or charcter and basically memorize how to draw a style or a character. a month of copies is probably not enough
>>6571814Wait, so I should learn basic construction then? Any reccs? Loomis is painful for me.>>6571816Alright, fuck gonna keep going. Just gonna keep doing it.
>>6571798>I'm getting discouragedYou know nothing about being discouraged. This pit is bottomless, it shows you newer and newer facets with each passing year. One day you think you are at your lowest and it can't get any worse. One month later you realize it absolutely can. What I'm trying to tell is being discouraged is normal when learning to draw and actively searching for ways to improve because of how painfully slow the process is. Get used to it.

Currently though I'm getting back into it and yeah I'd say it's proving to be very successful, even with other responsibilities stealing away my time. Copying/emulating a popular illustrator guy's illustration style for his rendering and design has proven to be extremely efficient in making my art better both technically and in terms of people liking my artwork. I would say its moreso a training direction than an actual art fundamentals course (the krenz courses are basically all I've been using since I posted them here, and since the anons reposted it for me after my friend took it down).

>>6572552>MagentaPink anon, fren >the shoulders are assymetrical, and the upper torso is fucked, like the torso gets too thin too quickly, not really showing any indication for the abdominal area. Also, I kinda feel the eyes are bit too different of sizes, and the hair needs more design.fair, it was a quick drawing but some more time spent and a canvas flip would have made it better. >I took the Naoki Saitou 3 month book challenge for about a month but had to sort of postpone it several times due to school. Currently though I'm getting back into it and yeah I'd say it's proving to be very successful, even with other responsibilities stealing away my time. Copying/emulating a popular illustrator guy's illustration style for his rendering and design has proven to be extremely efficient in making my art better both technically and in terms of people liking my artwork.Yeah, that's why I have been considering it this method of actually finishing pieces instead of unrelated drills that rarely get implemented. I feel like i will get more of doing things this way than theory crafting and mindless studies. either way it's nice to here that someone has some success with doing things this way. I already started it and can see were stylaztion has been lacking already.
>>6573091there's no indication as to from which direction you're looking his tongue from so it looks wonky.
>>6572430>>6572460don't fall for the dot nose bait, but also don't draw the entire nose bridge like that. especially not in a front shotin case of chun-li, see how lines are only for the nostrils while the rest of her nose is just a composition of different values. use hatching for subtle value changes instead of lines

What are some good streamers who really start every drawing from zero?

Is the widest part of the hair (almost) always around the eye level?I'm having a problem drawing hair because the figure loses "balance" is there an unspoken rule about anime hair (regardless of the style)?

>>6573743well maybe not in every case but I find it hard to find examples that break that "rule"it's almost always around the eyes or beloved, never above (not counting ponytails)

>>6567162can i get some feedbackfirst time finishing something in 5 years :/
>>6573789well the hair comes from the top of the skull, it would be unnatural if the hair is wide at the top and it gets thinner as it falls
>>6573695>Is the widest part of the hair (almost) always around the eye level?yes, because the middle/horizontal of the face(eyes lvl) is the widest part of the head/skull

>>6573816it's logical but anime haircuts aren't always logical, as talking more from a composition perspectivegranted I'm a retard (hence why I'm here asking this question) but I always had an easy time drawing the head from different angles and stuff but drawing the hair is hard no matter how many books about hair I read, I wish there were a set of rules

>>6570911I have failed you on the background. I got frustrated, even though what I was going for looked okay before I erased it. Overall I'm happy with this. Big difference in terms of quality from what I drew earlier this year and late last year. A bit of construction on the head does help alongside of viewing a favorite artist of mine. A lot of gripes though. Ikeep gravitating towards thicker brush sizes and weird brushes in general. I want to work with G-Pen since I see most artists I follow use it and the results look nice.

All I want from drawing is anime girls, right? So I thought to myself - what's stopping me from using AI to draw characters for me, while I focus on developing painting skills and learning to fix the errors it makes? That way, I skip the most annoying part.I've been doing this for a week now, and it's fun as fuck. I generate whatever I want to draw, spend some time making sure the output is good (pic related is a good example), and then shamelessly draw over the outline, minding the errors AI made and putting my own touches. Then I try to paint it myself. Before I couldn't force myself to draw, but now I can't stop. It's like a game. And I feel some improvement - my linework is getting a lot better, I'm actually finishing stuff instead of sitting upon piles of ugly sketches, and I'm starting to grasp the basics of shading.I dunno if you can call this being an artist or not, but it's fun.
>>6575791Not an artist, wdym. Being artist ain't fun /sI'd argue making shit sketches repeatedly do more than finishing sketches that you didn't do much on. Although I understand how difficult it'd be to practice.
>>6575791Well if you want to be a copyist then that's good for youBut we want to actually draw things here
>>6575791What exactly was stopping you from doing it before with an artist's existing work?
>can't even copy a simple chibi without repeating it many timest-that's okay right?
>>6575791The issue is that if you were too dumb/lazy to do something before AI, you're still too dumb/lazy to do it after AI. See >>6575812
>>6575791>just only copying anime causes /asg/ shitter to have a mental breakdown, and quit to use A.l insteadWho would have seen that coming
>>6575819what's the alternative
>>6575812Artstyles are less consistent, and you don't get as much variation. Plus, it's not fun to trace something that's already good, fixing things is part of the fun for me.>>6575819If anything, this allows me to step away from grinding anime figures and faces for once, and focus on painting real life objects. AI can't do backgrounds, it can't do correct shading either. So that's what I want to learn.
>>6575815Yes, that's ok. Don't give up.
>>6575828>Plus, it's not fun to trace something that's already good,Most artists are very capable of improving on the work they post, they simply don't fall into a perfectionist spiral. Aren't you able to see anything at all that could be changed...?
>>6575830Gotta admit, it's humbling to see what's essentially a simple set of strokes be so hard to follow.
>>6575833I'm not arrogant enough to judge a professional's work like that, as if I can do better. I can easily judge whatever AI outputs though, because it's incapable of keeping the detail consistent, especially in elaborate and/or fantastical clothing.
>>6575827Copy more anime

>>6575812The real answer is that he feels like AI sanitizes the art theft for him. He's the person who wouldn't slaughter a chicken to eat it, but will gladly order fried drumsticks at KFC.
>>6567218literally just choose one and go for it. get inspired, visualize a concept for something original you want to make using that style as a springboard and strike while the iron's hot and under NO circumstances should you ever copy without thinking. it's a waste of time, it's boring, it doesn't lead to creativity and it doesn't lead to better drawing skills either. styles are vastly overestimated anyways, you don't have to be a pro to branch out/experiment and you definitely don't need to know ALL of your fundies at a 100% before breaking some of the rules or stylizing, contrary to what some crabs might say i feel like 99% of posters here just sit on the edge of the swimming pool and keep asking themselves silly questions instead of jumping in and swimming
>>6576333Sounds reasonable. When you think about it, AI is like a more "2D" puppet tool.
>>6576261Doesnt have as nearly as many images
honestly not sure this is even the place for this but it should count as anime nonetheless >>6573695what you did was just following the skull, which hair naturally does already. i strongly advise you look up real hair, there's tons of haircuts that break up the natural silhouette of the head. try looking up bobs - there's ones that are wider at the top of the head (think the karen look) and ones that are widest at the bottom and create a sort of fanned out look >>6569949the anon w/ the critiques is right (except the part about the hair, idk what he's on about)that being said the design and style are both very appealing, do you have a blog?>>6571815>>6571905>>6571936>>6576077>>6573990these also rule
>>6575791This is not a place for youyou don't belong here
>>6576351NTA, but why?
>>6576370NTA but the dude is just mindless tracing over pictures and basically learning nothing. At least with a side by side copies he's improving observation and visual library. he should come back to the study thread when hes ready to take off the training wheels.
>これはなかなか、今までの本の中で一番わかりやすいです!https://twitter.com/i/web/status/1186964871880957953remember to study real anatomy
>>6576398You do learn stuff from tracing, albeit obviously slowly. Repeating something a thousand times always leaves an imprint, that's why people are told to just draw, no matter what. If that's the way for you to enjoy the process, it's a valid first step (and that's how countless artists began when they were kids).Improving observation shouldn't be done through cartoons, you need to observe anatomical models with visible musculature. Cartoons approximate the anatomy too much, you won't learn what you don't see.
