For me it's HB.
>>
If you like HB, what's the advantage of buying a Staedler over the regular yellow #2 pencil?
>>
My sketches are messy, H6
>>6849707
NTA but prob the lack of eraser feels better
>>
>>6849707
Not all HB are the same (e.g. Faber Castell is harder/lighter than Staedler). There are quality issues too: some graphite has some gritty bits that will tear the paper.

Get the basics first, learning to use a basic #2 efficiently/fully takes time already
>>
>>6849703
I always carry a 2H and a 2B with me for different uses

That being said I kinda like how you can get a surprising range of values from just HB
>>
>>6849703
HB has great range, hard and bold depends on your force. Finally an OP that isn't a faggot
>>
>>6849703
I used 2B for everything, but recently I went drawing outside (I never do that) and making light marks with it was suddenly more difficult to do than it is at home, or wherever I don't feel I'm at risk of being interrupted and judged by a stranger. Gonna get an H or HB soon, but since the Faber Castell's 2B are lighter than the pentel I always use I'm chillin.
>>
>>6849707
Staedtler is above Ticonderoga in terms of quality, probably. I think you don't need more than a Ticonderoga or an Oriole for every day use.
>>
For me its H-3H, but i feel like going softer into Bs soon. My sketches look like shit in Bs doe, too messy.
>>
>>6849910
>That being said I kinda like how you can get a surprising range of values from just HB
Almost like there's a reason it became the pencil of choice for every day use
>>
I started using b2 but since I'm new and didn't yet control my strength I ended up leaving the sheet all stained, so I decided to use h3 until h6. Now that the years have passed i use b2 Staedtler and it is my favorite, I like the control that pencil gives me, I am still a fan of h2/h3.
>>
>>6849703
B2 forever in my heart
>>
I'm on the 2B Staedtler Mars Lumograph team but I also like my 6B Faber Castell lead holder. Mechanical pencils are charming too.

Derwent 2b is the grade for me.
>>
>>6850240
I thought it's the everyday pencil because it's balanced enough to be dark without smudging. I doubt nodraw normies really care about the range of values you can get out of HB.

Hard pencils are extremely underrated. Retards don't go for it because they can only think
>le dark and le smooth = good
The hardness keeps the point sharpened for a very long time allowing you to do very fine cross hatching. It's kind of like silver point. In fact, the sort of ateliers which obsess over Bargue plates don't even recommend going beyond 4b.
>>
>>6849707
If you don't give a shit about anything, the cheapest pencil is the best.
If you want max glide
Blackwing>Hi-Uni>Lumograph
If you want max darkness
Hi-Uni>Uni Penmanship>Faber-Castell 9K
If you want max feedback
Lyra Art Design>Faber-Castel 9K>Lumograph
>>
>>6849821
I have a full Faber-Castell set and have only ever used the 4H, 2H, H, HB and B.

Is it fuck up ink if I use charcoal to sketch? Been embraced DYI art supplies lately.
>>
>>6852931
Try your question again in english pls
>>
>>6852895
I got a love hate relationship with charcoal because I love the way it blends and smears but I hate how it feels on paper and also I gotta use fixative and that's annoying
>>
>>6853172
>I hate how it feels on paper
Agreed, it feels like nails on a chalkboard and has a similar sound.
>>
>>6852895
The messy part isn't that much problematic, but
it's harder to control subtle value shifts, and harder for precise/small scale work.

Charcoal starts to become useful when doing large scales drawings
>>
>>6852931
>>6853125
Does it fuck up ink if you use charcoal to sketch instead of graphite?

I think so because fixative but I never tried it so idk rly

Light pressure for a 2HB-like darkness. Lead's soft enough to get a dusty look. Can always blend or go darker if needed.
4B is amazing.

thats funny because the pencil and 2b share the same letter and you posted the sexy image of my waifu

8B is the only pencil you can make a proper study with. You would know this if you, you know, attended literally any sort of competent place for drawing education in your life.

Why yes anon, hrb is used for making strokes.

Seriously tho.
If you never heard of hard round brush I have really bad news for you.
Or maybe you heard of it, but you are just too dumb to make the connection?
Which one is it?
>>
>>6857015
In particular on a trad thread, you can assume people are unfamiliar with digital-centered abbreviations
>>
For my money, 2b is the lightest I will go.
I want to be able to erase without leaving anything behind, I can't do that with HB oftentimes.
>>
>>6857144
We are on ic. Whoever is not familiar with hrb is a newfag. Or simply too dumb to make the connection.
>>
>>6857193
HB is lighter than 2B though.
>>
>>6857198
Yes, that's why I said 2b is as light as I go instead of HB or H something. HB is so hard that the marks stay while 2B vanishes
>>
>>6857195
You sound like a smart kind of guy. I must be dumb then.
>>
>>6857222
I'm just shitposting. Of course nobody is dumb for not making such a connection lol.
>>
>>6857288
>shitposting
Sociopathic traits ain't good for your brain anon.
>>
>>6849821
Sets like this are retarded though, since you're going to need significantly more B - 6B pencils than anything esle innthe kit. I mean its cool to have the variety to start with, but youre going to jave to return to buy more of only some of these.
>>
>>6849703
Why?
>>
>>6851195
>If you want max feedback
How do you define feedback for a pencil? Like the sound or feeling of using it?
>>
>>6849703
If it's not 2B, it's not to be.

What's your opinion on the top 15 highest customer-rated "drawing pencils" on Amazon?
>>
>>6863519
Staedtler>Prismacolor>Derwent.
All others are trash and should be replaced by Faber-Castell, Uni Mitsubishi, Lyra Rembrandt, Cretacolor and maybe Blackwing if you like wasting money.
>>
>>6849748
I've only used the Faber 9000 B and 2B and they were really smooth, expensive though, it's insane they're charging €1.40 for a single wood pencil, I've been using mechanical pencils for ages and will continue to do so.
>>
>>6863519
They're going to be rated mostly by parents buying stuff for their children and hobbits who aren't really going for the highest quality. That's going to be the case for almost all supplies of all hobbies and such.

That said, it takes a certain type of person to be too anal with their pencils, so long as it makes marks and their grading goes harder to softer, I'm happy.

would one up this and say charcoal is the way to go but 8b is good enough
>>
>>6849703
If I had to pick one, like a B7 or so. If you're good at controlling pressure, and you can sharpen it, it does the job of several pencils.
>>
>>6864431
Why so many?
>>
>>6864489
I buy them from aliexpress so I have to buy it in bulk. everything I buy from China takes a whole month to get here
>>
>>6864438
>only person ITT who has any knowledge of values unironically
You can get an almost pitch black with a HB/2H/2B set and proper technique. There are multiple issues with too soft graphite (nothing that cannot be overcome but still)
>>
>>6849703
gtfo it's 2B or nothing you fucking pleb

If I don't have any experience with drawing pencils beyond some Faber-Castell 2B & HB .5 leads in a Kura Toga (no good for drawing/sketching) would you guys recommend I try out a pack of picrel to decide what I'd like to buy in the future? I wish there was the option to go to a store and test out individual pencils from different brands. What's the best way for a noobie to get familiar with the types and grades of pencils that they prefer?

Some stores do let you try. You just need to find one that's committed enough to being a good art supply store. College towns are good for that, something close to the campus.
>>
>>6849707
Regular basic bitch No. 2 pencils smudge.
Not much of an issue when writing an exam, calamitous when drawing.
>>
>>6866805
They're supposed to blend. Your pencils are full of chinesium powder if they're don't smudge at HB.
>>
>>6866587

>staedtler lumographs

Yes. I work a lot in graphite withbfull-ass rendering and I vastly prefer the lumographs over other brands. Tombow monographs are good too but tend to be less available
>>
HB is the same thing as B
>>
>>6866587
Get a 2H, HB, 2B, eventually a 4B.
>>
>>6866855
You don't understand what I mean.
When I say "smudge" I don't mean "gets' a nice blend going." I mean "If you even so much as glance at the markings the entire canvas looks like a coal miner just got done with it.
>>
>>6861063
Pencil make a subtle whine when you use them. Lyra Art Design's pencils WILL make you deaf. Beware.
>>
>>6866587
Find a decent brick and mortar store and they'll likely help you out.
>>
I like it when I'm also plan on inking stuff in pen
