I want to draw a horse humanoid monster and am practicing drawing horse heads from the front view where the front is the tip of it's snout

Should I narrow the mouth and nostrils a bit? I feel they're wide to the point of looking a little uncanny but a horse is naturally going to look a little bit uncanny in this view
>>
>>7196427
your art already looks leagues better than mine

I did some of Betty Edward's Right Side of the Brain book exercises but I think you're already good on that

if anything I'd just draw whatever I find cool. That's what gets me going.

Any feedback for me? I'm the guy who drew the horse head in the post right below yours

the way her hand rests on her hip feels a bit weird

There are multiple measurements.
I should have added:
None of which are perfect but give a general idea of where you are.

If you can execute complex poses and compositions with proper fundies you are at least mid int. If you cant but fundies are there, mid to high beg . Ecc..

Exmple: A person drawing B&w obviously can not demonstrate colour theory.

Style will happen naturally over the course of you making the comic. It's not something that you necessarily need to be concerned with at the start. Finding whatever shorthand methods work for you is how you develop your style and is something that I personally love about the medium of comics.

No one cares. Too bad, not everyone can do anything, most people realize that long before age 25.

>I don't know what to do. I'm 25 and I've always wanted to draw and every time I try, I just end up with this and it makes me want to cry out of frustration and helplessness
Change what you do every time otherwise you're just sissyphusing. Chances are you just won't ever be able to do it in which case go do something more useful with your time like volunteer work or overtime.

So, should I give up on literally any hobby ever? Then am I not interested in anything at all? Because this is what it's like for everything that I've ever tried doing even for non creative hobbies or just anything in general.
I have literally tried doing several artistic hobbies and gave up each of them immediately when I was a teenager.
>Gave up on Source Filmmaker
>Gave up on GameMaker
>Gave up on FireAlpaca
>Gave up on Photoshop
>Gave up on writing
I didn't know how any of them worked or what to do. I don't even know basic trig. Even when I look art guides, I literally cannot comprehend them or figure them out. I don't want to be stuck with no creativity or being unable to express myself. This is what it's like for literally everything I try doing. I'm not able to try and keep up with any hobby. Even writing, I do it sporadically and very rarely. Stop giving me this reductionist bullshit. There's only one logical conclusion with what you're presenting here, and I know even you don't believe that. So give me actual fucking advice.

May I ask you a thing? I have difficulty drawing those tiny short lines that define creases. I am not sure how to ask, but just simply how you recreate this effect consistenlty? It the angle of lines, how they curved? Their position? Their width? I tried to use them but with no success. They just taint the image

First, talk to your doc about your meds. ADHD/ADD meds aren’t supposed to make you a jittery, impulsive mess. If anything, they’re designed to make you chill the fuck out in terms of executive decision making and ESPECIALLY when it comes to motor functionality. Maybe try lowering dosages or trialing a (non)stimulant. At the very least get reevaluated if you were diagnosed as a child. t. daily 50mg vyvanse user

Second, if you’ve been on /ic/ or any art community ever, everyone will tell you they wish they started earlier. The best time to begin is probably as soon as you have some kind of control of your motor skills as an 8 year old or some shit. The second best time to start is now. Time still moves and you’ll be 35, 45, 55+ with or without any artistic capability.

Lastly, this kind of ties into the previous point but think about WHY you want to learn and git gud. Fulfillment is an extremely important part of learning anything and will be stronger than any impulse you have to give up. If it’s just for external validation then that’s fine but just know your journey will be an empty one that will inevitably rob you of the positive relationship you may develop with how you express yourself through art.

Just make what makes you happy, anon. For me, it’s anime girls.

I've been medicated on stimulants for my entire life and this has never gotten any easier. Was on adderall, it stopped working recently, then switched to Vyvanse, didn't work. Now I'm on Focalin, still doesn't work.
A lower dosage of focalin, anti anxiety medication. My mind and my body locks up and prevents me from actually doing anything. Usually either out of anxiety or my mind and my body simply just locking up and telling me "What the fucks the point"? And just making me look back at my phone again or just stimming and staring at a wall.

Legitimately NOTHING has worked. I felt better for a week and then nothing. This has gone back all the way since I was a teenager too. I had thyroid problems that got fixed, but this never got any better.

I don't know how to get the motivation to do anything. Even when I do happen to try my hardest in doing something, it's always half as good or even just 2% as good as anybody else doing the same thing, because me being purely retarded and unable to learn or focus. Even when I try, nothing good happens. My entire body feels sore and I rest for the whole day. I've been working out for 2 years and lost 20 pounds as well.

My body still shakes even when I'm on the right amount of stimulants that make feel relaxed. Right now I'm on a lower dosage than I was previously because that dosage made me feel sleepy. Now I'm on a lower dosage and it still makes me jitter a bit. I don't know what to do.

Since this is an asset that would be used in any situation. I want it to have the most basic lighting possible.
But, someone said I should have a consistent light source.
I try to keep in mind to keep things like the shading simple since character has multiple skin tones and outfits.
>>
>>7196958
Unless your monitor is significantly worse than mine I don't see anything wrong with the reference you're using.

Just keep grinding. You're on the right path, you just need to train your vision and your muscle memory. Take some time to look at your drawing vs your reference, look back and forth between them very quickly and play spot the difference.

Tips for shading in ProCreate?

I hate being a 'what brush do you use' anon but I genuinely can't figure out a way to make it work for me.

I've had some luck with a spraypaint type brush but the sensitivity seems way too high to where I need to manually select each shade of gray I want to shade with. Is that how everyone else is doing it?

It seems like the optimal workflow would be to start with black and then adjust how hard I'm pressing on the screen to blend my gradients.

Also any general tutorials on light and shading that you think are good would be helpful. I'm actually starting from 0, grinded figure studies for a few years but completely neglected rendering because I thought it was tryhard shit, only to now realize its the spice that gives illustrations their soul.

>>
>>7196949
You absolutely need to stop focusing on the 2d outlines and start seeing things in 3d as well as breaking down simple shapes before you can do anything.
The cactus is clearly broken down into hexagons but they're not edges more like grooves. The face is an ovoid shapes, don't go straight into drawing the outline, break it down into shapes, the face the nose, the lips, the cigar, the hands. Notice how each of these interact with the light sources. You might be biting off more than you can chew here.
Go back to basics.

And stop drawing hard edges on everything, get comfortable doing curved strokes. Remember, it's not a stylistic choice if it's your only choice.

Screened ones are "problematic", unless you have one of those huge arm stands to position them in the right angle, you will be destroyed crouched all day on top of those things. I don't like that working position. I like to draw with my pen flat and horizontal on the table an my sight on the a big monitor in front of me. That's non negotiable. So screenless are my preferred option. Btw, the brush is the standard krita "sketching-2 large".

>and shade them separately.
This might end up badly. Don't use this approach. The shapes merely help you map out interactions between the features and the light source, not to distinctly cut out each one. In my opinion you should just drop shading for now and focus on better visualizing the subject. If you absolutely need to shade do so by outlining the shaded area, like cel shading, but don't actually shade it so you can better understand your own shapes and hopefully improve them.
Go check out the thread on art books sometime, it has some good ones for getting a grip on this sort of thing early before it ruins your process, or worse, your drive.

if your goal is to have character editor with multiple lights, you have to keep it simple use grayscale, split the image in base color and shading layers then use your game engine to blend both layers, use overlay ( both screen and multiply at the same time). then you can have your palettes and lighting as indexes you can refer in game.

Also split the figure in multiple parts so you can change it, for example face, arms and body in this case.

measure the limbs more accurtely with shape construction
her forearm is really extended/too long on her left arm.

I have to agree. Cell shading would be more suited for this. I just a bit autistic about how cell shading looks with my lineart. But, it's best to just keep thing more simple.
I also made hand shorter. Not sure if it's enough.
>>7196984
Thanks. I based off key art from the Utapri anime. The way I shade my hair here is slightly different than how I currently do it. But, it's basically the same effect. I'm not skilled at giving advice but, I use the base color as my highlight and the shade with the darkest color before adding the midtone on top.

your eye for negative shapes and vertical proportions are good enough, work on your horizontal proportions, use vertical proportions to figure how wide are others, for example head height vs torso width or lower leg height vs shoulder width, play around and you will find something that just clicks for you.

This may be a strange question, but I'm a total beginner (as in, this is my first time really giving art a shot after thinking "hmm... it might be cool..." for years on end); how do I know when my basic shapes (cubes, cylinders) are "good enough" to move onto other things? Is it just a matter of whether or not what I'm attempting to draw looks good?
>>
>>7197102
I used to study from a really old perspective book that a lot of the great masters used. The advie there was to buy a wooden or plaster cube and to draw it from life. Then, you were supposed to trace the cube from life, onto a piece of glass, and overlay that glass tracing on top of your drawing. You were then supposed to repeat this process, unti you could draw a perfect cube from memory, from any angle. (Ernest Watson's Creative Perspective)

The second way is to extend your vanishing points all the way out and make sure they land on a shared horizon line. (Famous Artist's Course)

You can do the above steps much easier if you draw digitally. Just paste a picture of a cube onto your canvas, then drag your drawing on top of the reference, right in the art program. You can just screenshot the cube from blender or some other 3d art program and then lower the opacity, so you can overlay your drawing over the ref
>>
>>7197108
Will a Rubik's cube work for this? And is "Creative Perspective" available for download anywhere?

I think you are referring to the fat pad lines on the belly, if so this is a region in women where there is a high accumulation of fat so I used some lines to define it, now for the lines themselves I used a gpen where I reduced brush size to give a softer look
I found these examples that show how to use lines to define the belly fat pad and the gracilis, which is a muscle that stands out when the leg is spread

you can move onto other things immediately. it'll be a long time before your basic shapes are perfect. I do one full page of cubes cylinders and spheres, as well as one page of the basic shapes combined into more complex shapes, every day. And then I just draw whatever I want after that.

Thanks anon! That's a hard question. Maybe you can start by just not trying to draw details, just forget about details. leave "gaps" if you're not sure "what to do". Just try to "reach the idea" by "safe approximation".
Other thing is, there's a big difference when someone draw what he "sees", and when someone draws "what he knows". The one who knows expresses confidence and have much more chances to tweak lines and shapes in a successful way. You could say "..what about those who doesn't know shit, but they are so bold that they just go at it like they know..", well, for me, the result of that combination is SOVL. They know what they have in their head, their are looking at it in their mind. They BELIEVE in that shit they are drawing because they can "see" it, and amazing shit happens. That's a different breed I guess.

In picrel, I was about to do another of those beach girls, but I just chose to do whatever and see what happens. I'm searching random shit there, it looks sloppy because of it, and that's fine. At some point she looked like playing an instrument, it wasn't planned like that. But if I wouldn't have some basic knowledge about anatomy I could not do those fun exercises. You have to grind figure and anatomy till you die, fail, drop it, start again, drop it again, start again, till one day you can draw whatever and made up poses out of your ass, and "make it work" some how.

when you force yourself to not lift a pen until its done, you give up on "perfection" and your line gets that alive feeling. basically by doing this you are training gesture according to nicolaides training regime. that is why despite it looking rough or cartoony, it feels nice to draw / look at. this is why some art books shill so hard gesture as the most important thing ever

for me the most intuitive is to pick any brush and set its opacity to like 10 or 20%. then you simply paint over same area until it gets dark enough. ofc there are million ways how to do it. the most straight forward is to use color wheel: start with light gray, then pick darker gray and continue until you are done

"Drawing gesture bullshit" (no ref) is a great exercise, the best one. But you have to know what to draw using those lines anyways. That's why I think "gesture" is an advanced exercise. Nothing will give you more power points than figure and anatomy grinding. You can't avoid that, with out grinding anatomy, those lines means nothing to your brain. Just squiggly lines.

Ohh, ok. Sorry anon. There you have in picrel the tool set up. That's for Krita. I don't use PS much.
On Krita there's that dynamic brush tool, wich is like a "general stabilizer", very simple. Each brush in krita has their own dedicated stabilizing set up, but I never mess with those, too "advanced" for me. The general one works just fine. You may want to test the best set up for you. The levels that I use may not work for you. You will have to play with it and see.
>>
Are all the clean lines posted here just abusing stabilization?

I don't like stabilization I don't use it, What I do is to set the brush in greater blending mode (krita or compare density csp) it gives me the closest feeling to a real pencil. I'm >>7196821 so take it with a grain of salt.
>>
>>7197294
It depends on the brush, some sketching brushes in krita already have some kind of inbuilt "drag" or "stabilizing" behavior. So those wouldn't need "extra stabilizing". Try them, they are great for sketching. But if you grab a "pen" brush, it will behave totally different. Then I use that Dynamic Brush tool and work with pen brushes.

>>7197020
It's good that you're shaping the torso more but I don't think you're going about it in the right way. The way you are only narrowing the waist gives an odd abruptness to the upper ribcage and ruins the rhythm of the torso as a whole. Her being flat-chested only makes this more obvious (not that there is anything inherently wrong with that, flat girls deserve love too), that's just a personal thing I would change. That aside, I really like your coloring and design work. You have some really harmonious, saturated colors that work well together.
>>
>>7197286
That depends on the user. For example if you use that set up there >>7197285 you may start to do some crazy wobbly lines all over the place, and you would say that the stabilizing is shit. So you would have to crank it up from 0.12 to, I don't know, 0.50 maybe? It depends on your level of confidence in your line work.
In example, the more I crank up the stabilizer the more it affects my "performance", it slows down the line, and it is like someone grabbing my hand and stopping me from drawing. I need less stabilization to work faster, but enough to make it clean. So no one is "abusing" the tool, but tuning it to match their own personal level of skill with line work. I need it to be fast, so I need those stabilizing levels low. Some other needs to do an slow and steady work so they need to up the levels of stabilization. The stabilizer won't turn you into some Kim Jung Gi clone, it doesn't work like that. It will only match your level of shittiness. So you can make a total turd with an steady clean line LOL.
There's no magic tool, yet. "AI" was supposed to be that, but still you're just asking someone else to make an image for you.

stab reduce line jitters so it more smooth. but clean is how you draw.
but in some way slow smooth high stab nudge you to go slow and not scratch. so it result in more clean automagicaly.
I cant good lines so high stab just stay in way of my scratchy habits and I do not like lack of fine control so I try to keep it at minimum. but it could help with final lines. high stab or lot ctrlz this how it seems for digital if you want neat and smooth

>did you actually learn to copy like the dude on twitter grilled you or will you just wallow in self-pity till the end of time?
>The reason you cant see shit is because you never learned it

No I didn't. In fact I didnt draw shit today or last night other than shitty doodles because I was tired from wageslaving/training and could only staer at my tablet out of pathetic self-wallowing.

I know I need to do more, practice more, grind more but I come home exhausted and afraid that the couple hours I have left will be misused because I can't do shit and will only get worse while everyone else gets better.
/blog

Pathetic, isn't it? I wanted to draw something for someone's (2 days late) birthday and all attempts have come as grotesque insults.

Also, realizing that I have learnt absolutely fucking nothing all this time and still can't even grasp what fundies are or how I cant even get a fucking frontal face done correctly only exasperates me even more.
I am scared of seeing others pick up their pens later than me and get way way better like it is fucking nothing, like the easiest thing in the fucking world while I just stay as bad as ever.
It is my own fault really. I want to get better at something that needs dozens of hours a day of practice just to have a chance at it and I don't even try. I receive many beautiful redlines and well-written replies and I can't get myself to reply out of shame and disgust because they keep telling me to get better and easily point out how to get better but I can't learn from it at all and it makes me feel like I am fucking cursed. That I was meant to just stare at everyone else getting better while I stay shit in my own shitty corner.
I can't describe how bad I feel. I commute to work thinking about drawing, I stay at my wagecage thinking about drawing while doodling dogshit here and there on my papers, I train while thinking about drawing and once I arrive home with a mere couple hours before bedtime I am so deathly scared of confronting the canvas again and realizing that the artists with talent who made it or are making it in front of me right on my fucking nose already drew all day while I am tired and exhausted and angry and sad and scared just about to pick up my pen.

So I realize that I have wasted years doing everything wrong and must go back to the very beginning to xerox shit and grind boxes in the hopes this dumb fucking animal learns correctly for fucking once WHILE EVERYONE ELSE DOES IT LIKE IT IS FUCKING NOTHING. AS IF THEY HAD BEEN BORN FOR IT EXCEP MOTHERFUCKING ME. A CHICKEN STARING AT HAWKS FLYING LIKE ITS THEIR GOD GIVEN RIGHT.

God, please grant me mercy or give me talent.

This conversation is not even unironically fun to continue, 90% of men watch porn if you don't there's something wrong with you like you're "asexual" (arrested development) or bought into some alt right bullshit (retarded loser), so which is it?

the other guy isn't me. I usually only masturbate to art/hentai/anime so it's hard to get references unless I copy other people's artwork as reference which feels weird when I'm doing draw requests

Is it true that if you study shots of porn, you get better at drawing human anatomy? I’m seriously considering it.
>>
>>7197689
I think that's exactly what that guy uses, he used to say to copy your favourite doujinshi twice
>>
Also this is a question about studies in general, what are you supposed to do with finished sketches after drawing them from porn? I don’t really want to keep it in my computer so I want to delete them, is this bad since you won’t track your progress and growth or does it not matter because you already gained the experience?

>>7197995
The tiny muscles in your hand get used for drawing and tire. Same for your brain being forced to put them to work. As with everything else related to muscles: practice, rest, practice, rest, and provide your body the nutrients needed to grow and regenerate. Don't label it as issue at all.

Since for this you just need to use the muscles, draw nonsense while watching animes, or listening to movies. It will go away after several months or years.

I think both low and high stabilization have their charms. The wobbliness of low stabilization gives character to the lines.

>I cant good lines so high stab just stay in way of my scratchy habits and I do not like lack of fine control so I try to keep it at minimum
It sounds like you're using and not using it both for the wrong reasons. In the case of no stabilizer, the benefit is having more natural flow to your lines, but instead, you're using it to scratch. In the case of high stabilizer, the downside is it inhibiting your lines, but your reason is because it doesn't allow you to fall back into your scratching habits.
So I agree with your methods, but not necessarily your reasoning.

Your only hobby is whining on the Internet
>But I wanna draw :(((
No you don't. Action is desire. Maybe some part of you wants to draw, but the fact that you don't actually do it proves that you would much rather stare at walls or whine online. You made the decision to do these things with your own free will.
