I've been thinking about trends in what kind of art people value and how "merely beautiful" art fits into that. I'm wondering how on/off people think these ideas are.

art that is made for the primary purpose of expressing/capturing beauty, as opposed to telling a story, overt or more hidden and symbolic, if given any meaning at all, would in general seem to be ranked lower in potential than narrative-driven or symbolic art. most people wouldn't look at a 3/4 portrait with a neutral expression, say, and ask "but what does it mean?", whereas a work, say, with one person looking down and away from another person and holding their hand up so as to dismiss them, while the other person is a ways away, looking down and apparently crying, would (understandably) be assumed to have a deeper meaning, even if not fully understood. with the last example, assuming it's not a commission or something, the work obviously has a deeper meaning to the artist: something about their worldview, what grabs their attention, what they value, compelled them to make it. but the same is true for the unassuming portrait. not only that, but that compulsion could be one of the deepest drives within the artist - in their capacity as an artist or in general as a person. I imagine some people here have had this experience at one time or another, but being in awe of a beautiful artwork - whether visual, audible, written - can invigorate you and make you want to (continue to) live life and make you appreciate the life and opportunities you have - and what can be deeper than that? I don't think people *have* to have such appreciation for beauty, but it does seem like most people underappreciate how deep beautiful art can be; I really think describing art as "merely beautiful" is a misnomer.

Some people use "merely beautiful" as a nice way to call things technically-skilled but uninteresting. They're not actually calling it beautiful, it's a backhanded compliment.
That's not what you described in the rest of your post, I'm making a split here between "how people talk" and "substance."
Your img you posted would be nice as a decorative element in architecture, like a mirrored pair of sculptures of such on corners overlooking an inset door. Art that you described as capturing beauty is best as ornamentation, but people often pick them because it has some sort of meaning and association to them that isn't in the work itself.
The art-object is not the entire art-experience, and the subjective nature of art means that the individualized art-experience is formed from the observer/possessor bringing his life into play and fusing it with the art-object to complete it.

The sad thing is that what you describe is kind of a "solved problem." Go into hobby lobby and you will see plenty of things that fit this critera in some way, just in cheap mass-manufactured forms. Your image could be one of those mass-manufactured as canvas prints and sold for 10$. The art-experience is cheapened by this, but that is due to how you encounter it. In isolation if you saw it in someone's house, say, while cleaning a recently-dead relative's estate, you would not have the negative context of that and would possibly associate it with how the relative displayed the piece, who they were, etc.
>>

I used to draw a lot, I know how good I can get if I practice and get back to that spot.

My question is whats the current art everyone gobbles up and is willing to spend a shit load of money on?
Anime? Furry? Traditional? Stylized? Landscape? Porn? Fanart (and which series)?

I no longer get pleasure out of anything in life, just a sense of "yeah, that's objectively good looking, and it makes others happy", and I'm willing to spend my time on art again.

.... Did you skip the first sentence? I used to be almost intermediate before I lost all sense of joy and motivation from my life, and I know I can get back to that point.

Anyway, I have schizophrenia, both the meds and the disorder itself just comes with anhedonia. Not much I can do about that. At least I'm not on the meds I was on when I first got diagnosed where marksmanship and hand stability practice would've possibly helped.

Heres today's drawing, looks like polished dog shit.
>>
>>7246693
I gave up halfway through, in case anyone things that's a "finished" practice.

I don't know what it is but since my first episode I always over shade the eyes and I noticed other people with schizophrenia tend to put too much focus on eyes too. Probably something to do with paranoia or some kind of psychological phenomenon.
>>
>>7246693
I did not skip it. Good art requires authenticity. You cannot create authentic art if you are anhedonic, and your question in the prior post was entirely about inauthentically catering to others for profit.
Basically, you have the same motivation as a megacorp.

Try thinking about whether art is something you WANT to do or if it's something you feel like you "should" do because of having gotten decent at it, skill-wise.

But really talk to your psych about the anhedonia. If it's that bad you're going to be fucked by life.
>>
>>7246701
Art is and was something I want to do. I would say I get some sort of joy that I completely can't recognize but feel drawn to to create things. It's not necessarily money I'm after, I'm paid enough to just exist and also don't get much joy out of getting money, but it seems like the logical "conclusion", I want to create something that makes others happy, so I might as well also get money from it so the people I know in real life are happy that I'm doing it.

I've talked to my psych, the meds are doing their job, I'm not in psychosis, I'm not rambling about nonsense, I can form a coherent sentence, and these are the only meds out of all of them that do that the best with the least side effects. Antidepressants are out of the question because it's schizoaffective bipolar and antidepressants will trigger (medical word, not internet word) the bipolar.

Only other thing I could try is sometimes alcohol brings back the emotions without psychosis, but that's not a good solution and my drunk art sucks major ass.

to preface, none of what I'm about to say is meant with any malice. I appreciate anyone responding to my post, I just want to respond to some of the things you said and clarify things here and there.
>Some people use "merely beautiful" as a nice way to call things technically-skilled but uninteresting. They're not actually calling it beautiful, it's a backhanded compliment. That's not what you described in the rest of your post, I'm making a split here between "how people talk" and "substance."
I should've been more specific here. I agree that sometimes people use language like "merely beautiful" in a backhanded way, but what I had in mind in particular were people who have an ultimately positive view of "merely beautiful" art, who genuinely mean 'beautiful' when they describe it as such and find it interesting, but seem to find it necessarily limiting in its potential. my thinking was sparked by a portion of an interview between Proko and Stephen Bauman: https://youtu.be/G3YgDf1wvuk?si=H5oiQj6YyxgoOyQW&t=2179. as meaningful as making beautiful art is to Stephen, he seems to have a relatively shallow sense of what it can do: "improve people's lives." which is not *nothing*, but there seems to be an underlying assumption about how much further something more narrative-driven can be for people that less conceptual art can't; and Stan, who works in a similar vein to Stephen, seems to agree.
>Your img you posted would be nice as a decorative element in architecture, like a mirrored pair of sculptures of such on corners overlooking an inset door. while I enjoy the image I posted, and the one in this post as well, I myself don't consider them pinnacles of fine art. I just often like including artwork I like in my posts when I post here... (1/2)
>>
>>7246643
Do you have any (former) obsession or job? Anything you're knowledgeable about? Something you were raised with/your parents or peers liked that you consequently picked up? Do that in art form or if there's an equivalent art community for that (for instance, military is overrepresneted in art/vidya)
I have elected to draw for a fandom. I can't say I enjoy it, but it's become a running system in the back of my mind. It's comfortable, I can retreat into it like a comfort zone, even though I don't get any or any emotions from it anymore (have I ever though? Idk anymore).
/ic/ is pretty anti-fanart, but if you're ever concerned about originality, fanart for existing IPs is really a digestible way to explore elements of your own thoughts/original ideas through an existing canvas that people are already familiar with.
>>
>>7246710
...and while the examples I gave are more likely to be ornamental, my thoughts apply to art in general; any piece has the potential to be considered beautiful.
>The art-object is not the entire art-experience, and the subjective nature of art means that the individualized art-experience is formed from the observer/possessor bringing his life into play and fusing it with the art-object to complete it.
often times yes, but, and I'm not sure if you've ever had this experience, but some art experiences are truly transcendent in that you momentarily lose your sense of self and are fully immersed in the object itself and its beauty. Schopenhauer has some interesting thoughts on this, though I imagine there are more recent scientific studies and other research into such sublime experiences which corroborate some of what he wrote on it.
>The sad thing is that what you describe is kind of a "solved problem." Go into hobby lobby and you will see plenty of things that fit this critera in some way, just in cheap mass-manufactured forms. I'm sorry, but I do not see how cheap, mass-produced artworks some normie might hang up on their wall "solves" my "problem," even acknowledging that you loosely mean that, given the scare quotes. not to say any of my misunderstanding is your fault. (2/2)
>>
>>7246711
Yes, art, I drew every day for 4 years right before the psychosis. Also history, Minecraft, programming/game dev (I suck), linguistics and languages, knitting and crocheting (when you're disabled, what's it even matter to have "feminine" hobbies?), and I would like to make some cosplays or costumes some day, maybe a full suit of armor.

My mother was also into art and most of my friends were made in art class, though we long parted ways.

I think my favorite subjects to draw about are (hard) sci-fi, fantasy, and futuristic, I like the idea of mixing classic fantasy (dwarves, elves, orcs, etc.) with sci-fi/cyberpunk, I just don't think there's much of a market for that outside of cat/dog girls/boys, or appealing to LGBT people (hot orc dads in your area or whatever) or to furries.

I very much still have an imagination, I can make original things, just that I don't know what I'm feeling and I don't know if I have emotions anymore, I definitely get angry, and I laugh at things that feel like they're supposed to be funny, I cry without knowing why I'm crying, but shows I used to enjoy are no different than watching some guy walk past the house.
>>
>>7246712
>I do not see how cheap, mass-produced artworks some normie might hang up on their wall "solves" my "problem,"
It's not solving "your problem", but solving the problem of "people not valuing merely beautiful art as much." They do value it, they display it. They are curated to normie tastes, but the lack of meaning and simple beauty is what is there. The issue is that the context (as you even noticed) of them being obviously cheap and mass-produced makes them seem less interesting.

Overall my point is that even art-objects that are "merely beautiful" are still subservient to the subjective experiences of the observer.

The closest thing I've had to the experience you described is when I stare up at the clouds after a bike ride. But that is in part caused by the context, the endorphins and sweatiness and large amounts of focus and attention needed giving way to simply... "ah, cloud..."
>>
>>7246725
Unironically write shit down, may help you process it.
If you want to mix those themes, do so. If you build it they will come.
>>
>>7246725
Well, I think you have things laid out for you then. There are art communities who center around making tributes to history (and naturally
, history and linguistics are intertwined).
The second part is a problem for everyone who doesn't 100% fit into a mainstream subject. But your sci-fi genre doesn't seem too niche, I think you could make it work.
Genres can change with as little as a different art style and art style makes up alot of what's marketable.
>>
>>7246749
>solving the problem of "people not valuing merely beautiful art as much." They do value it, they display it.
it's not that they don't value it at all, just that - even going beyond their own tastes - most people seem to think of it as having less potential depth than entails a narrative, overt or hidden.
>The issue is that the context (as you even noticed) of them being obviously cheap and mass-produced makes them seem less interesting
while I think mass-produced art is more likely to be considered in lower regards than a unique and conventionally beautiful piece found at a museum, say, and the context in which it is bought might lead someone to ponder it less than the piece at the museum, the context doesn't necessitate people do so; you can have the most reverence for such a work procured in that context. and that still doesn't speak to the person's broader conception of how deep non-conceptual, non-narrative but beautiful art can be.
>Overall my point is that even art-objects that are "merely beautiful" are still subservient to the subjective experiences of the observer.
I might agree, but I would need to inquire further what all you would consider a "subjective experience" for the observer. I think it's hard to fully eliminate the social from the biological and do a proper science experiment when considering why a given person acts the way they do or has the experience they do, but I think it could be possible that some people are simply wired differently from the outset and primed for certain personalities attributes, irrespective of certain experiences we have. and so in some contexts we really could just be at the mercy of the object itself and the event where we might encounter it. though in all honesty these are vague considerations and I don't think I know nearly enough to get to the bottom of it, or at least as deeply as some others might be able to do.
>>
>>7246805
You also do have to consider that there's often art which one may think is simply narrativeless, when the actual narrative is just not apparant due to - again - being divorced from the context and prerequisite knowledge.

The subjective experience of the observer is the unique nexus of that person's mood, energy, current activities and responsibilites and so on at the moment they observe the artwork, and how their mind connects what they see to their life at that point.

There are so many factors that can go into it that it's not really something you can test for or control. It simply is.

Does anyone know if this old website, I believe it was run by an actual cartoonist, and it gave you art advice about how to draw Western style cartoons? The only things I remember from it are that it was very old school, like 90's-early 00's style webpage and some of the first things it showed you were drawing a pear shaped body and making pupils pop off of eyeballs for comedic effect.

just calibrate you pc monitor, avoid any marketing filter like those "game" configurations for color and shit, and that should be fine, on the phones is similar buit they used to have particular color configurations so yeah is more hard, but in most of them you van adjust that if you lurk some time in their configurations settings. But trust more a, IPS screen, in their default fabric configuration, most of them are ok, so a simple calibration solve all. If you have an old monitor like TN or CRT, yeah, avoid that, since most of the modern world use at least ISP
>>
>>7249690
Sorry i mean IPS screen, now we have new things like amoled and other shits, but the amount of people that use that is minimal, since most of the modern world use phones that are at least 10 years old, yes, IPS is the standard for the screen. Back in the day i could say LED, LCD or TN, but since most of the people use phones instead of pc monitors, is better focus on that one.
>>
>>7241479
No, your art will not be stolen, so draw with no worries. Just... avoid going to untrustworthy websites to download games. There are enough relatively well-known sites out there that the community uses, so if you don’t know one, it’s better not to use it. Also, don’t open suspicious links in your email. Still, stealing your drawings is the last thing anyone would be interested in
>>
>>7242559
gaming, laptop is ok but most of the time you will be connecting shit so while time passes the port will come loose over time and be more complicated to replace, i guess, it depends on the brand, but yeah, in the traditional pc case is easy to replace all those things, just buy the proper port and connect, done. Also laptop screens are smaller.

>>7244917
It doesn't matter, each person has his own methods. In general, people use more layers because that way they can adjust more in the late phase of drawing, that's for multiple reasons, coul dbe that they just dont think much in the beggining and adjust later while the whole drawing is appearing, or that they are making commissions and tend to adjust more things because of the demands of the commissioners, or whatever. Some guys use layers but they constantly merge them to they ended with just a few, or some just use a minimal amount or work in one layer. All of them are valid ways to do it.

ordered this print on canvas of "Fight with Cudgels" and was a little worried about the print quality and how well it was packaged
it arrived today and i got it mounted above my bed - pretty impressive from a distance, but spots with "thin paint layers" look a bit off / blurry... its noteworthy how the sharpness is just as important in this case, as with paintings with lots of details
all-in-all im satisfied, although i would prefer to pay more for a more detailed print - i wish i could find a trustworthy online store/workshop with the top-tier printing hardware

Ice is foolish. Dr RICE himself even agrees. Especially since it’s almost certain that part of the cause of anon’a pain is from inflammation from poor circulation, not fully flexing and stretching the arm. A heating pad would help more than ice.

A ‘compression sleeve’ or just a sock with the top cut off may help. But overall, the solution is to stretch and strengthen.

I like how it's coming along, but I'm going at a snail's pace and it can be hard to keep going at times because of how much more I need to do. Should I stick with it to completion or should I move onto something more manageable for my skill level? destroying my wrist between having a tech job and drawing after work. Overhand grip helps but I need to do tripod to copy accurately for studies and that seems to aggravate things. Lots of copying for studies really fuck me over, but it's also the best way to learn.

Occasionally I just need to take a few days off from drawing but curious how other anons lessen wrist wear.
>>
>>7259302
Drawing from memory, your 2 previous steps should allow you to do it, the level of quality depends on how good you were at doing the tracing of the structure, for a quick start:
>Open canvas, enough size for your ref and your drawing
>Directly do a drawing on the blank canvas space (no tracing)
>Remove the ref, hide the sketch, and do it again, make your best guess then compare results when you've finished
It will force you to make measurements of proportions by eye and test if you remember them.
Bonus: Slightly change something of the original ref, like the arm bending in a different way, or having something foreshortened, it will very likely be wrong, but from experience it's a good habit to make educated guesses from trial and error so you can compare with a real reference later (if you have done enough poses you'll develop more of an intuition for this), some people may disagree and may want you to stick to references 100% of the time, but sometimes you won't find one or not exactly as you imagined, so it will help you escape being overly dependant on references, and not feel like you can't draw what you want, it's better to get it out of the way instead of waiting it out forever to make that drawing/illustration, you can find resources or that sneaky ref later and try again in your next study/illustration, or directly post it here and someone will tell you exactly what's wrong with it (among other things).
>>
>>7261072
I've been drawing for 4+ years, every day for 3/4ths of the last year, and otherwise am mostly at my desk on my computer often typing something, and I've virtually never had wrist pain. I mostly use the overhand grip or I'll grip towards the end of my pencil with my index, middle, and thumb (for shading) but sometimes use the tripod grip for finer details. what exactly are you doing at your tech job? if you haven't already, I would invest in an ergonomic keyboard and mouse. and while you can still be reasonable about your spending, you probably don't wanna be a cheapskate and get the least expensive stuff you can find; invest in more quality stuff. that aside, with the tripod grip you can still avoid using your wrist so much: you could assume that grip but lock your wrist (lightly, without exerting yourself to do so) and move your pencil with your shoulder or elbow. and with finer shading, say, you can still move your fingers as opposed to your wrist so much with that grip. idk much about exercises that could help, but I'm sure they're out there as well.

The regular shadow or form shadow is caused by how light follows the 3D form of the object. If light can't reach it, it will be in shadow. Because the sphere is round, the light slowly wraps around the form smoothly until it hit the point where light can't reach anymore. Where the light stops or terminates, is called the terminator line.
The core of the shadow is the dark part of the form shadow near the terminator line. Because light bounces around, some of it hits the ground plane, loses energy and will faintly light up certain parts of the shadow. This make the 'core' of the shadow appear darker, hence the name. Depending on the situation, this effect can be very obvious or more subtle.
Cast shadows are caused by an object blocking light and projecting a shadow onto another form. In this case, the 3D form of the sphere projects a 2D ellipse-shaped cast shadow onto the ground plane.

When I look at other's art and see the superfluous (for lack of better word) elements in the composition, I get what it is and why it is there, but when it comes to my own drawing process, my brain does nothing.

it would probably be a good first step to track your daily habits if you don't already, and try to make your schedule as consistent as possible as you track it (though I know that's not necessarily easy, especially depending on if you work overtime and if your band doesn't have a set practice and performance schedule). this will allow you to see where you can realistically fit drawing (serious and non-serious) into your schedule, or whether you can even do it in the first place. keeping a daily to-do list is also a good way to increase the likelihood of doing things you don't have to do. it has helped me quite a bit, but thinking long-term and setting up my schedule with the long-term in mind. that way you have a clear schedule which (you) yourself know will make you feel good/better about yourself when you go to bed; and your future self 1 year, 2 years, 5 years down the line will appreciate you for. all that is mediated by thinking more about the long-term, which can more easily be remembered by a physical object, a to-do list, that you see every day. there's also techniques like the 5-minute rule which can work well and also putting drawing, say, earlier in your schedule such that you're less likely to put it off and at the end of the day say, "well, it's towards the end of the day, I can just do it tomorrow," and "tomorrow" is like a week or maybe even a month later. you said your life situation keeps changing, which is why you need to keep as much normalcy as you can. that gives you the best opportunity to be able to successfully work around the volatile aspects of your life. also, perhaps you should consider the importance of certain goals and which you want to prioritize. if you find it difficult to fit drawing into your current schedule, but feel particularly strong about it, then you have to necessarily move away from other interests. again, think long-term and be honest with yourself.

Now for my random stream of consciousness that I'm going to save to my notes
Hmm yeah, my work is definitely consistent but music not so much. I can schedule my solo practices since my band isn't every day though. A to-do list shouldn't be too hard either... Long term is also good. I haven't heard about the 5-minute rule before but honestly it sounds so useful. I've definitely had issues with days turning into more... But yeah no you're right I should get a better grasp on my day to day life's schedule instead of just flying by the seat of my pants lol. Thanks again anon
>>
>>7265244
no problem anon. to add, you can also keep a long(er)-term to-do list in conjunction with your daily to-do list. for instance, I have a monthly to do-list that I keep, where I am to write each month general things I want to do (draw, exercise Tuesdays and Thursdays, read x, y, z book, etc.) but also specific entries for one-off events I have to deal with, whether that's a meeting, getting a gift for someone's birthday, etc. the long(er)-term to-do list is meant to be used to create your daily to-do list. you can update your monthly (or whatever time frame you set) to-do list as necessary/desired. this just makes it easier so you don't have to try to always remember everything you need to/want to do: it's all written down somewhere you can reference at your leisure; and if there's something you think of that you need to/want to do that month (say), you can simply add it to your list. if you plan to keep a daily to-do list, I recommend faciliating that with a monthly (or longer) to-do list as well. I have two separate, physical notebooks for either purpose, just to keep things organized. I would also recommend trying to write out your daily to-do list the day before you plan to do all those things. with me, I even put down in my daily list to write my daily to-do list for the next day. it's one of the last things I do before I go to bed. and in general try to be explicit about your tasks, that way you have a clear idea of what to do when it's time to do it. however much or little of my advice you end up taking, I hope you can make things work anon. all the best.

My art is loved by non-artists but hated by artists who draw realism.

Am I bad or do realism fags just hate me?
>>
>>7265387
I'm more of a realism fag, though I can appreciate cartoonish styles. that said, while I don't know you and don't hate you, this drawing is very basic technically - even within the scope of cartoonish styles. the rendering of the hair, the arms and hands, the skirt: it's just very basic, to be blunt. the face is the most appealing part of your figure, but even that is messy a bit and simple.
>>
>>7265392
so not bad just...basic?
>>
>>7265407
I didn't want to be too harsh, but I would say the areas I mentioned in particular are bad, perhaps the hands the most. it's very sloppy. even a mediocre artist I would assume/hope could pull this off in less than 10 minutes tops.
>>
>>7265415
specifically what makes it sloppy? if it wasnt sloppy how would it look different
>>
how many/how long do i need to draw circles, spheres, squares, cubes, and cylinders before i become confident in them and able to do them easily and be able to move onto actual drawing?
>>
>>7265556
>confidence
there's no perfect formula. all we can say is that the more you properly practice them, the more comfortable you'll get.
>actual drawing
you can start "actual drawings" at any time, but that doesn't mean they'll be good. do whatever you like, perhaps some combination of serious study of progressively more complex fundamentals, and full-fledged portraits, figures, landscapes, architecture, etc. if you wanna gain skills beyond mediocrity, it's realistically gonna take you multiple years, perhaps close to a decade before you mostly like what you draw. but if you're in it for the long haul, you'll do the work necessary to get that far.
>>
Is drawing custom dakimakuras a good niche? I won't make it my main niche, but it seems like some nice side revenue (if profitable. Is it?).
>>
Should I do realism and do cartoons etc? Like should i know the anatomy and human figure and study how and why specific things do that and when I feel as if I'm ready break the rules?
>>
>>7266195
do what you want and what your desires demand. you don't *need* to know all the major anatomical parts of the figure, their names, their insertions, and how they function to get good at drawing figures realistically or cartoonishly, but that knowledge can help you - especially, but not exclusively, with imaginative work (including animation, say). if you want to do realism, do realism. if you want to do cartoons, do that. if you want to do both, do both. you don't have to do one before the other, but it's probably easier going from realism to cartoons than the reverse: if you understand the normal structure of something well, it's easier to make similar and appealing simplifications. the point at which you might branch off from realism to cartoons is always your choice.

is it possible to learn how to draw when you're constantly depressed and reminding yourself of how much of a failure you are? I cant even pick up a pen without a million intrusive thoughts telling me how pointless it is
>>
>>7268853
if your depression is so severe that it's incapacitating you, then by definition no it's not possible. perhaps what I had at the time wasn't technically depression, as I was never formally diagnosed, but a some years ago when I first got into art I was so constantly and extremely discouraged by my inadequate drawings that I would only go a day or two and end up quitting for up to a couple weeks or more before giving it another go. but the same thing happened a few times and I eventually gave up for about four years. I was disappointed in my inability to draw what I see and didn't have a clear path of going forward. but after four years and some effort spent working on my self-loathing and lack of industriousness, I realized I didn't want to go my whole life not knowing what could've been had I gave art an earnest try. it's been an additional four years since then and I've been quite consistent, even so far as to draw every day for most of this past year (non-calendar). it wasn't necessarily easy, and it's not like I don't struggle with it to some extent today, but I've gotten better at being "schizophrenic" with myself. I try to realize that these negative feelings don't have to be "me" and that they conflict with my long-term goals. to the extent that I can keep my ultimate goals in mind, it's easier to be consistent. also seeing some progress made a big difference in my motivation, but that can take a little bit of time. for pretty much everyone most progress is hardly discernable in the moment. whether you want to call it faith, an assumption, an educated guess, you necessarily need a grounding belief that you can make progress through conscious effort, otherwise you will simply find it hopeless.

You should only be buying artbooks by artists who you like. It's assumed that if you like them, you want to incorporate whatever bits resonate with you into your own art. The image you posted would be a useful ref for the glove cloth for example, or perhaps you like how he does hair or eyes or the specific colors and shading and such.

That specific type? That's an asset. Oldfag mangaka use preset sheets of screentone or physical clip-art to paste in. It's why you don't see that kind of thing before the 90s or so when that kind came around.
Nowdays most just use stock assets or their own photos and there's a feature in CSP or other programs to just convert it to halftone or pure b/w. Inio Asano (Goodnight Punpun, Dead Dead Demon's Dedededede destruction) is a good example of the "using his own photos" since a massive amount of the stuff he did in those was that, but then photobashed, converted, and often printed out and drawn over before being rescanned.

I sculpted an écorché out of polymer clay (Super Sculpey + Sculpey III) that turned out too big for my home oven, together with the base it is around 45 cm tall. I baked it one time already in a home oven but that was without the skull, and it only fit sideways and I had to bend the armature a bit. Now that the skull is on there, that is not an option, and not to mention that the skull is attached to the neck by muscles so the entire thing needs to get the final bake as one. I found a place nearby that has a kiln service but obviously kilns for ceramics get much hotter than the around 100 degrees Celcius that polymer clay can stand. I called them and explained and the lady told me that they can set the kiln to 100 degrees but I need to find out myself if polymer clay can go into a kiln and if it doesn’t damage the kiln? I don’t really get what she was asking, because if it doesn’t get hotter than the 100 degrees I specified nothing bad would happen to the clay or kiln, or am I mistaken? I would be really bummed if I can’t get this project baked, I put a lot of fucking hours into it…

This looks beg, the shading with graphite brings it down too, whatever you thinks represents your art in the simplest way would be good enough, like a character doing mundane things or whatever in a medium shot like those quick doodles artists give when they sign their books, if it's quick and simple you can fill it with more implied detail so it'd be more impressive than a large drawing that looks half finished, even chibi sized is a simple and cute approach, watch this video (it has subs).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c29NN-03mjM&ab_channel=%E3%81%95%E3%81%84%E3%81%A8%E3%81%86%E3%81%AA%E3%81%8A%E3%81%8D2
Just make something small like in post card size and use one medium (less is more, especially for a quick sketch, and you seem not very comfortable in trad so don't trip yourself over), I'd say use lineart because it seems you are better at it.
Also I personally don't think there's anything wrong with digital printed work, but I'd use it for more finished stuff.

is there a good resource for drawing figures from imagination that midwits can understand, or is the idea antithetical?
I spend most of my drawing time drawing humans and can draw comfortably with reference, but I want to be able to draw the poses first and then use reference to correct them instead. I don't want mathematically correct perspective, just for it to "feel" right. I try doing copies and then redrawing from imagination for poses I like, but it's still a lot of time copying. Currently drawing from imagination is like pulling teeth because I didn't do it enough when starting out a few years ago, and I want to reconnect with it. If there is a disciplined idea such as forcing myself to draw only from imagination for a week or a month to break this, that is ok too.

"good" is necessarily relative to some end, whether it be imitation, simplicity/complexity, uniqueness, appeal to some person or group, etc. you need to figure out what your end(s) is/are first in order to then figure out whether your style is good in that regard.

>trace shit
>copy an image, then noise the image, then do another copy, then apply heavier noise to it, copy, repeat until you are copying from an incomprehensible reference. (Yes this basically training yourself like an AI model.)
>draw thumbnails of any pictures when you set up, so you are used to "zooming out"
>use MULTIPLE references in one pic, combining them for different things IE character reference, an outfit reference, a pose reference, an expression reference, a hairstyle reference, a lighting reference, etc. Try for just 2-3, more is not necessarily better. This forces you to gapfill with your imagination

What is the tried and true method of improving/seeing progress when it comes to art?

>>
>>7279112
>is there a good resource for drawing figures from imagination that midwits can understand, or is the idea antithetical?

There's nothing to it but to do it. When drawing on your own you're usually relying on the formulas and techniques you've learned over the years. If you earned figure drawing then you know many methods of constructing a figure from imagination, what really would stop you would be light& shadow because while drawing formulaic would help, there are little intricacies that would slip our mind so reference would be helpful.

If anything practice figure drawing deliberately. Think about what you want to draw, do a bunch of studies on it then put the studies away and draw it from imagination. Simple but not easy. Good luck.

Wisdom and/or Mindfulness.
Your observational skills and your hand skills advance at different rates. With wisdom, understanding, mindfulness, etc, you can always at a meta-level account for this discrepancy.

Sometimes you may also need to take a break and touch grass to gain inspiration and allow yourself to rest to cement your art-gains, or you may need to do the opposite and go hard in pushing outside your comfort zone, actually using the skills you are building. In either way, seeing how high your baseline has risen afterwards is highly encouraging.

>How do I work on making my stuff appealing? Is anime style a shortcut to it?
no style is appealing by itself, it's always gonna depend on the viewer. anime is fairly popular at the moment, so looking at trends in certain anime styles and their popularity wouldn't be a bad way to go.
>No matter how technically good my stuff was, it always looked uncanny and janky
I don't mean to be rude, but this is either a cope or simply ignorance. if your work were technically good it wouldn't be uncanny and janky, by definition. it might not be appealing to you and some other people personally, but if it were technically sound it would necessarily look coherent.

Thank you for the quick answer. I limited myself and mainly drew based off western work in the past, so looking east might help me grow in a better direction.

I don’t think it’s rude at all to say that, I realize my claim might sound ignorant. But I guess a better way of describing it is I might be competent enough that viewers might say “hm nice” on one component of it, but highly lacking in others which handicapped me. Like good line work but terrible coloring. Regardless, I’m gonna strive to improve everything now

Why is it that so many artists nowadays seem too... comfortable in the standard? Lacking in experimentation or whimsy?
When I look at various artists online, I see many who are technically-skilled and they're doing some manner of combining concepts in novel ways, their work is ultimately boring and doesn't really seem to do much.
>Anon that's vague.
Some examples...
I saw some dude built this whole damn art desk into a spare room of his house, built in copic racks, and so on. DIY-looking but impressive. And he uses it to just... draw media characters, like, the kinds of shit you'd see on T-shirts at Hot Topic. There's nothing really emotionally-compelling about them, it's just things like "[character] as a [different franchise] robot!" or lone-pieces of iconic equipment.

I've seen people who are prolific digital painters and they have the ability to render really cool shit, but that's 1/1000 things they post, the rest is just scifi landscapes that could be shuffled into different artstation accounts that would never be noticed.

This also happens with coom art, where even niche fetish artists seems to fall into this hole where the characters get LESS expressive as they improve, the additional rendering and shading precision isn't contributing to stronger movement. I suppose they just start basically adding additional detail that your mind would otherwise fill in, and in doing so collapse a lot of the appeal?

I'm pretty /beg/ still, but whenever I do odd shit out of the ordinary people seem to be shocked and impressed by it, plenty of my art posted in the same kinds of discord servers as higher-tier people gets more discussion than people who are legitimately better than me. It just feels weird - I'll focus hard on the emotion of a piece, or do something that's rule-skirtingly offensive, or because I used an odd medium, or had some wacky r34/r63 idea that nobody else has done yet, but few people better than me by leagues seem to try anything like that often.

most artists of all time periods followed conventions; fewer broke away from conventions but minorly; fewer still broke away majorly; and fewer still broke away virtually completely. this is the way it's always been, this is the way it always will be.

I remember things being more interesting several years ago. Even a bunch of artists I used to look up to seem to have just gotten complacent over time.

memories can be wrong/incomplete

No, I've gone back a few times to look at some older galleries and there were far more interesting things from certain artists for longer stretches. Maybe it's just the areas I've been in, maybe it's because people I looked up to got frustrated/old or something. I know some over the years ended up just fucking off and quitting, so I can't say how they'd have evolved if they were still making art...

I have mentioned this offhandedly to some of my art friends from time to time in a less-thought out way (but brought actual examples up) and they agreed. But that's again just people close to me so idk

Why is he drawing standing? What is the benefit?
>>
>>7280830
Better posture and also easier to draw from your shoulder, you also can't really rest. You're standing so you have to draw.

Sitting for really long periods of time is also just really unhealthy in general, from blood clots in your legs to various other issues.

I was wet sanding cured polymer clay outside and forgot to wear my sanding mask. I know you should never sand ceramics, but polymer clay is ok to sand. I stopped immediately when I noticed my no mask.

How fucked am I? I'm scared that theres going to be some mold in my lungs because I know traditional clay does.

I suspect this is more of a >>>/diy/ question but you're probably fine. The water cuts down the dust and being outside means its "well ventilated."

Just don't do it again and keep tabs on your health just in case. But you're probably fine for one instance.

I believe that social media and easy access to alternative revenue streams could play into this. Any decent artist can make a patreon or take commission requests. You want to have a brand and identity so that people know what they're getting, and you want to reach either the largest audience possible, or a specific niche, so having a concentration is important. 20 years ago, digital art and the internet were much different places, and unless you were using it for commercial work you were probably just a hobbyist. Think about it like early youtube compared to now, all of these things have been "solved"
>>
>>7281468
I know this is a factor in it. Hell I know it's why even some niche artists stopped drawing specific things, they stupidly believe it leads to lower income. But it doesn't explain the artists that seemed to like, they keep the same niche but their art get worse as they get technically better. Like their rendering "improves" but then looks boring/ugly.

One common thread I saw among multiple coom artists is that some hit a point where they start morphing from having decent line art to doing more internal painting of figures, but then end up adding all these extra shines and hatching that makes skin look like crinkled plastic instead of weighty, smooth, soft/firm and so on.

Maybe a bunch of the artists I see and have paid attention to are actually high-/beg/s or something. I know there's the ctrl+z plague, maybe that's it? I could see someone who uses so much mental effort to do one piece decide that optimizing the workflow in silly ways is the best option instead of having to do a lot of practicework.

What are some effective moralization/whitepill techniques to ensure the rapid improvement of my artistic abilities?

how much time did you spend breathing it? did you feel the smell of it? did you feel the smell of it and then suddenly stopped doing so? be specific
>>

most importantly when did this happen? if a day passed I'd say you're fine, look, just rest and breath clean air, do not repeat

How do I keep my computer cool during the summertime when I don’t have AC at home? Other than: Get AC; Don’t use the computer. Even in cooler seasons my computers cooling fan gets really noisy and the computer itself becomes hot to the touch. I’m very cautious with my electronics but I also need to be able to do digital work for more than hourly increments with an hour long cooldown between them. I was only able to get like three good hours of drawing in today.
How can I keep my computer cool so o don’t destroy it with heat?
>>
>>7281683
connect a copper wire and direct it to your refrigerator, jk
use 2kg of ice cubs to absorb all the heat, jk (but not really)
the easiest way would be a fan moving the air current for it to be constantly cooling, you want high conductivity, search convection if you want a clear idea, basically just make air flow
more complex systems could include heat dissipation with good conductors but that'd be expensive or unnecesarily complicated
>>
>>7281683
Remove the side panel if you are a cheapskate.
Don't cover it, keep a good airflow.

If you have money buy proper refrigeration.
>>
>>7281683
do this >>7281713
except affix a box fan to the side instead of leaving it uncovered

Also you need to cool down your whole home. You can open 1 window and then open another window that's across from it. Put a fan in one so it's blowing outside. It will pull a breeze through the home and hopefully cool things down.

rest it on a weight plate or two. you do lift in your home gym, right? or some flat, thick metal as a heat sink. also minimize the amount of unnecessary semi-hidden auxiliary datamining programs and 'apps' running.

Looking for a painting, I drew it from memory but it's basically a dark gargoyle/demon creature in a garden. I thought it was by Henri Rousseau at first because of how I vaguely remembered the way the nature was painted but he doesn't have any art like it
