Does /ic/ like Sculpting?
>>
>>7352605
Yes! But we rarely have threads on sculpting. Not enough sculptchads here and it takes a long time anyways.
>>
>>7352605
I want to get into it but it's too expensive to mess up
>>
Isn't sculpture a rich person's hobby?

I can imagine trying to convince a blue collar father that I needed to express myself with iron girders and concrete slabs.
>>
>>7352626
>>7352657
A block of sculpey firm is around $20 on Amazon with the wire being $15 (wire is optional if sculptures are tiny)
Clay can be re-used as much as you want and lasts forever which gives you infinite material to practice with (unless you bake it but thats up to you).
Tools you need are really just a paperclip and maybe a spoon. Art is cheaper for sure though as you just need a paper and pencil
>>
>>7352605
yeah, but I dont want a bunch of clay lying around my apartment
>>
is there a point to it beyond a hobby?
>>
>>7352794
the people who make anime figurines are sculptors.many very good figures
>>
>>7352663
doesn't it get horrible from reusing it?

does anybody know what i can search to get more of these grey anime figures? i find that they're the best to draw from since really easy forms and value

there's websites like the one in pic rel. but i don't know how to search said websites
>>
>>7352799
find one on pinterest and that's all it'll show you
>>
>>7352796
aren't they done digitally?
>>
>>7352605
all of this weeb shit is sculpted in 3d
the only figures that get sculpted with real clay are prototypes from shit like sideshow collectibles you know where a single statue sells for like 600 to a gorillion eurodollars because they're handpainted and usually quite massive

cool bro but actual mass production isn't going to be wasting time with this shit when 3d sculpting is way more efficient
>>
>>7352663
I've used super sculpy in college and it was an involved process. You needed a solid foundation of wood with thick steel to form a skeleton that can only be bent with a blowtorch and then sawed down with a powersaw. You then use thinner wire and aluminum foil to build the basic form of the sculpture which you can finally use the sculpey to carve and mesh around. You can't just bake it in a regular oven either, so good luck getting access to a kiln.

If you skip any of these steps your sculpture with literally fall apart unless it's super tiny. Anything that's about a foot or so big is a lot of fucking work and will cost hundreds. You need a dedicated workshop if you're going to take it seriously.
>>
>>7352827
Are you sure you weren't using Oil based clay? What you described sounds exactly like that. The packaging for sculpey has instructions for using it in a normal oven, you can even use a heat gun.

The videos in >>7352813 make these figures with mostly just the clay and wire (though they do have a space to make them in). I've made sculptures a foot big out of sculpey in my bedroom and they were fine, though that probably is the absolute maximum size you should have.
>>
>>7352626
What are you talking about? Unless you're using air dry clay or green stuff, you can resculpt until it's right.
>>7352797
Sculpey isn't really made to be reused. If you want some reusable clay you want some oil based clay, which is iircc cheaper by the pound but tends to come only in larger amounts. Eventually enough crap will get into it to nessecitate buying fresh but you can get plenty of use out of it first.
>>7352804
Some. It's really sculptors preference, since digitizing is almost trivial.
>>7352827
You can use aluminum wire for most sculpting that isn't massive. All of my 12 inch~ sculptures were exclusively aluminum wire and I never had a problem with movement. In college I made a three foot sculpture, and there I just used some cheap metal pipe to make a stand for the armature to attach to(which was also aluminum, just thicker and twisted).
>>
>>7352799
I have over 10 000 anime figure references, from lol is to oppais, from clothed to nude and from gray to colored.

Pinterest + ehentai + twitter should do it, just follow one guy and the algorithm does the rest
>>
>>7352626
Oil clay is cheap and you can just reuse it over and over. If you want something nicer, monster clay is great but it isnt for beginners.

Also I love jordu schell and want to be like him
>>
>>7352799
Anime figure prototype
Anime figure blank
Anime figure garage kit unpainted
>>
>>7352891
I thought sculpey can be re-used indefinitely so long as you don't heat it/bake it
>>
>>7353402
It can, but it's less than ideal for reworking in bulk. You can just microwave oil clay and melt it back into blocks.
>>
>>7352626
>>7352657
>too expensive
nigga just dig up clay and refine it or buy cheapest plasticine and mix all colours then just start sculpting. As for tools, take knifes and spoons from kitchen + your hands it's all you need. Nice bonus is medium hard wire for armature or scrap wood for bust size sculpture.

>>7352827
>with thick steel to form a skeleton that can only be bent with a blowtorch
WTF? It's bullshit. For sculpture of model 1:1 in clay you need steel rod but even thin, 160 cm tall girls can bent that staff without problem. So you are weak as faggot or your instructors were retards that gave you wrong materials.
>You can't just bake it in a regular oven
Nigga what? You can fire supersculpy in regular oven unless it's to big but using kiln build for ceramics it's overkill

>>7353402
Nope, it's get worse with time. It's recomended to use part of it (kneed) for sculpture and bake it.
For re-using I recomend just clay or plasticine of course you can use wax base but it's a bit higher skill in using that.

tl;dr for someone who wants to start with sculpting, get clay or plasticine, use cutlery and other tools form your home. Try few times, make some photos and then start thing about lasting materials.
>>
>>substrative sculpting
ok, you are sculpting

>>metal skeleton and clay or whatever on top
you are a faggot, dont call yourself a sculptor

If you are not taking a solid block of something, and turning that shit into something you are just playing
Play-Doh

just passing by itt, but whatever you call yourself, this is way cool
>>
>>7352796
Ironically those who sculpt anime in Zbrush tend to be good at drawing in Clip Studio or Photoshop otherwise you end up with malformed westoid looking figurines.
>>
>>7352794
Couldn't the same thing be said about drawing
>>
>>7356430
No, because there are many industries employing visual artists. Use your brain before posting.

You are making it sound like the only other reason to take up art (than a hobby) is to get a career out of it. There are careers for sculpting too (though less than art, but also less competitive). The reasons to get into art can easily be the exact same as getting into sculpting. Though if you are getting into the arts for a career you are a fucking moron.

Do not call anyone brain dead when you have 0 knowledge of the subject. I'm going to have to wash my hands after replying to your garbage post just to get the filth off. Never post here again

By definition those are the only two ways you can do anything, esl-kun

Where are your MEN
>>
>>7352605
Yes, but sculpting something takes time and our ic/ egos are too big to sculpt simple things and show them.
But if they made threads more often we could just talk and share some shit
>>
>>7352626
If you are new you don't need it, I'll be honest with you, if something turns out bad with cheap clay it will also turn out bad with more expensive materials because you have no idea what you are doing.
Just like drawing it is a whole process, so don't overthink it.
When can I consider better materials and tools?
When you need it, as you advance in your artistic journey inconveniences will begin to arise, "maybe I need these modeling tools" "I should create better finishes" "I think I should paint with an airbrush now" things like that, normally when you want everything in one go you are not taking things seriously and you just don't want to do it.
>>
>>7353002
>I have over 10 000 anime figure references
Could you put them in a zip?
>>
>>7357991
Seconding this
>>
>>7352813
great so i also have to be able to draw in order to sculpt. cant do 3d or irl 3d without 2d. i hate 2d
>>
>>7361409
Yes, anon, you don't have to be good at drawing, but at least have the perception of what a good drawing is and the basics of anatomy. Over time, you will become natural at both.
>>
>>7352614
thats caz >>>/3/ exists
>>
>>7352605
God those toes are so cute, imagine having this figure and being able to suck on those tiny little feet all day, god I'm so fucking jealous.
>>
>>7354977
Ok have fun with your shit getting squished, melting, and falling apart trying to support heavy clay while my anime girls stand tall and strong with wire and foil skeletons.
>>
>>7354977
>what is an armature
genuine peak dunning-kruger, or bait
>>
>>7357786
My problem is my retard dog keeps trying to steal and eat the clay so I have to put it away until I have a space for sculpting that he cant get into (he can open doors and my door doesnt have a lock)
>>
>>7352605
Nobody here knows how to do it.
>>
>>7369784
Its easy, just try it.
