Can someone point me in the right direction with my art?
I've drawn for a long time now but have no direction with my art. I want to get better at faces and heads since a good face can carry the art. Hell even getting eyes good would be a boon.
Anyway I've only drawn from imagination and haven't learned fundamentals (It's obvious) so where should I begin? I've tried going through the advice given to brand new artists like using fun with a pencil or drawing boxes and shapes and such but nothing clicks or it just seems like busy work that I can't apply to my draws. I'll post more art if it helps diagnose my shit. thanks

Who do you want to draw like?

Ideally like these artists.
33dotdot, k_o465, fuyafuyu, cyjalway.
So a more eastern japanese/korean artstyle.
>>
So you want to draw like half a billion people who produce stuff so similar that they resemble AI slop before AI was even invented?

Why why why why why.
>>
>>7372065
copy
>>
>>7372078
Because It's what I like and I draw like shit and will draw like shit for a LONG time so why wouldn't I want to draw what I like? Besides having a "unique" artstyle means what exactly?
>>7372079
I've tried that before but nothing sticks. Maybe I'm doing it wrong I've tried both tracing, eyeballing it, drawing guides over the original and then using those freehand on a new drawing but since I'm making up my own formula when it is a new angle or something it breaks.
>>
another drawing i just did today. any guiding appreciated o7

wtf are you doing
you're not even trying to be like your goals: no variation in line weight, no rendering or accounting for other light factors aside from a simple shadow and a highlight, just huge balloons instead of using anatomy knowledge
>>
>>7372132
oh I wasn't studying them I was just drawing like I usually do... I was waiting for some advice or videos or something to try. or someone to illuminate why the things ive tried so far havent clicked. like copying or referencing artists i like and the such. so you suggest doing a draw like they do? I'll give it a shot but that's never done anything for me, or it might be okay for 1 draw but then i need to find reference for each time i draw? that's less drawing time..
>>
>>7372136
It doesn't even need to be a study, you could simple use them as a way to 'quality-check' your original work.
You compare them against yours and know what is missing from your attempt, like what I wrote in the previous post. Then you go back and try again.

>>
>>7372061
honestly I think you lack fundamentals on form, it seems like you're symbol drawing bodies kind of, I'd say learn structure of the body (anatomy) and practice more life drawing; learning structure is never a waste of time and will level you up hard

I tried redrawing the original and trying to imitate the tanned bikini girl draw. the eye shading I did more like the fuya draw on the bottom. what would be a good way to practice line weight? I can never do it right I don't know what exercises to drill to improve it either.
Also thank you for the video I will check it out o/
>>7372145
Yay o/ that's good glad ya enjoyed. but I want to get even better.
>>7372148
Yeah I only know very generic things from drawing a ton on doing figure drawing but even then I feel i cemented shortcuts and errors. Any recommendations to look at for structure of the body and fundamentals?
>>
>>7372162
nice, now that you're trying to match the goal, you see more clearly where you could need to improve: linework, like you say (you're going way overboard with the outline, instead of being selective), perspective (for example the mistakes in the positioning of the cat ears), and anatomy (he clearly defines the deltoids and arm/hips anatomy with value, while yours is still lacking)
high gmi energy, just keep at it, always comparing against your goal

Sometimes I feel like faces and heads are the peak of anime drawing. Sure drawing elegant bodies with good linework is very challenging, but getting real emotion out of simple features whilst also being very stylistic is a pain in the ass.

My advice would be to trace and copy anime girls. Ideally, you want to focus on the eyes from multiple sources and angles.

>Any recommendations to look at for structure of the body and fundamentals?
I haven't delved deep into body structure, so I don't know any good resources yet, but (of course) Loomis is always a good option
>>
If you want improve with face and heads then draw (master copies) face and heads using reference.

The trick is that there is no trick just draw.
>>
>>7372321
I recommend a classic, Michael Hampton's Design and Invention.

I read the whole book once, these days it's a guide I use whenever anatomy gets complicated. Alternatively, I recommend downloading Jap and Korean books from the artbook thread and copying the drawings. Sometimes the art is self-explanatory, even though it's in another language.

Yeah I think having the drawings behind my drawing is kinda helping me judge my work as I go. this drawingf i tried using these 2 as the inspo. I will be making more of these charts by saving whatever images i like when im scrolling twitter. maybe this is the way...? also do you have a recommendation for a csp brush to play with line weight? I'm using a pencil called 8100 pencil @ 8px and it doesnt have much variety in line weight.
>>7372302
Yeah I agree. I'll give this more of a shot. I saw a video talking about doing turn arounds in boxes and I could combine that with heads for double duty practice.

i know brushes shouldn't matter but I really do think it helps capture feel.. anyone have some brush recommendations to get a similar feel to any of these artists? Also is there a basic round brush for csp?
>>

You're trolling.

Round Brush is default in every program.

Try the "pencil marker" (ctrl + F, search it on the page) for a slightly more interesting round brush
Since I doubt you've ever customised or imported brushes, Download and drag and drop the pencil_marker.sut file into your tools.
>>
>>7374562
whats the name of the basic round and under what tool is it? the only ones i found kind of similar is an edited airbrush to have higher hardness and the brush called paint and apply under thick paints in the brush subtool. I'll check that one out thanks o/

A HARD ROUND is basically "Pen" with the Pen Pressure off.
Saying "Basic round" is vague af.
Can you show me what kind of stroke you want? And tell me what its for (lines, shading, flats etc)

I genuinely wanna help you. But good luck.
You don't klnow how to make a basic brush, why the fuck do you want special brushes?
>>
>>7374614
it's a filtering process at this point, he'll learn the hard way or quit, like most people who think brushes are everything.
>>
>>7374586
I could give you their exact brushes but you still wouldn't have their style. They're just using hard round with or without a little bit of texture you can find thousands like them on the asset store. what you're really asking for is their skill not their brush

i know is not perfect but took me a few tweaks on the same brush that i used for everything on csp to emulate these brushes. the color one was done with default settings, but i changed the shape of the brush to a square. as >>7374627 said, these brushes will not make you draw like anyone on your image, what you need is learning to break their process and how to apply that to your own.
Also, all of these "styles" are incompatible between them, while the first one is just simple lining for manga pages, the second one and the one on red are more focus on line work, the red girl is a lot much simplier than all of them, is basically using lines as a guide and u can literally see where he delete the lines to reshape. the brown girl is by far the most unique style because this is just sketch to render, the line work means nothing as the color re-shape the whole thing, i cannot see any of these lineworks paired with that render

I say so myself I know brushes aren't what make a drawing good but I'd like to try brushes that give a close feel. Where do you get the impression that I "think brushes are everything"?
>>7374652
Oh yeah that does look good! but again I don't know where you get the opinion that I think brushes are everything comes from.. i say it myself in this very thread >>7374532 "i know brushes shouldn't matter but I really do think it helps capture feel" I just want to try something similiar because I know the brushes I use atm don't have the properties I need to recreate the same effects, some people are saying to learn how to make brushes but I just want to draw and practice. learning the brush engine and how to configure it takes time out for just drawing and improving

pressure on opacity?
fine then forget brushes give me some exercises to improve hand control. having pressure on won’t help me if i only know how to go from 0-100 with no gradation

Play is ok, but you should know the basics of tool creation (how to make a round brush) before going for custom brush styles.

>what did you use to make the gradient on her hair?
I used a multiply layer and airbrushed (with a low hardness brush) a dull purple from the top of the head down, since its a kind of shadow. *TIP for the sketchy lines or to cut shapes in the gradient, set a shortcut key for picrel. It will let you use your current tool as an erase.

>>7375341
I think you've seen the light, though you're current hand isn't too bad at the moment.
Draw straight lines, then curves and circles.
Focus on keeping control of the pressure throughout the line (you should keep pressure on for this)
Also practice drawing angled lines smoothly. I would turn off stabilization for this, as it makes switching angles for sharp corners difficult, Notice that you have to stop to get a sharp angle, and the faster you go the smoother the corner.

Im not the best at line, so there must be more exercises out there. Just play a bit.
