>>7464561>The water looks like cum.heheh, this is a good thing because it is not water
Somewhat pre beg here, been practicing the fundamentals for a fair bit and somewhat understand them but my by biggest issue is what believe is referred to as "line control". I can free hand random curves, lines, and ellipses but trying to place them accurately to make for example the petals of a flower I end up with several petals that are way too different from each other like length and width wise. Any advice or does come down to drawing 1000 circles like the memes say?
>>7464497what brushes do you use?
>>7464587Sketch until you get the correct shape. Use an eraser. Then ink the final sketch. In Scott Robertson's How to Draw he suggested drawing a few dots, and try to draw a smooth curve that passes through all the dots. pic unrelatedThere's a bunch of line exercises here too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBE-RTFkXDkAnyways, this is something you will get better naturally as you draw more.
construction plus clothing practice plus stylising a reference How’s the sketch looking so far, any glaring issues?
>>7464354I plot down the top and bottom line and a rough gesture to capture the reference. Then I Blob over the gesture on a new layer to get the shilouette, if the shilouette is right everything should fit inside or at least that's my logic. Then I swap to a hard round brush and draw/erease to and from the blob trying to mold the shapes the body would create into place. I made a copy of my blob to help visualize it how it looks before and after. After that I refine the lineart by drawing over some of the lines that aren't fully opague and check in detail where i have to push the line in/out to create a better shape from line placement/thickness, I didn't do this here fully, because it's the part that takes most of the time.
>>7464598The pose is static but that's not a drawing mistake. It looks good I think, hands might be too small. You're probably gonna change this for final line work, but the lines could use some confidence, drawing a calf with 8 lines is never going to look good.Face is very cute :3
How can you tell if art just isn’t the right thing for you and then KYS
>>7464595Thanks. The dots do help greatly but I dread the idea of having to rely on them but I assume overtime I won't need it

My biggest tip is either keep your pencil sharpened at all times or buy a mechanical one to save yourself the trouble.
>>7464743he's probably just being humble. and how much have you been drawing in those 6 months? i doubt even an hour every day.
>>7464744Fuck off with this trolling>>7464745It's not about pencils at all, the first anon intuitively understands how this fucking torso lies, he even managed to position it without a box
>>7464748That's why Keys to Drawing and Betty Edwards' books are recommended for beginners. People we consider talented basically born being good with drawing from observation. You need to train your eye and hand to reach their starting point.
>>7464692Honestly, I thought shit like that was self evident, it didn't even cross my mind that anon could be struggling with the fundamentals of building a sketch. Fair enough then, my bad
>>7464735>just draw anon, talent doesn't exist
>>7464754The sketch is much more complex than the boxes, you must have a developed sense of form, I don’t know how to draw such sketches, everything is just flat and ugly

>>7464735I also feel filtered to hell and back anon. It's a weird reference
>>7464748It's harder to understand what you're doing when your lines are thick and messy, specially if you're just starting. I'm not gonna tell you to draw more boxes and do more studies, you've probably heard that a thousand times in here.>he even managed to position it without a boxYou can clearly see the box in the first anon's drawing though.

>>7464765I mean, again, a lot of it looking good is just practice. >you must have a developed sense of formI mean, isn't that kind of answering your own question? You said it yourself, you need a developed sense of form, so develop it. It just takes time and practice.I really don't mean to pick on you, and if it came/comes across that way, I apologize. It's just that I really don't think there's some big secret that will automatically make you able to draw like that other anon. Obviously, what you(?) linked before -a general process to lay out guidelines- is helpful, but it's just a tool to help you learn faster. As an example, picrel has been my progression since I started again. My "then" also looks pretty flat and disproportionate. Obviously, my "now" is still not amazing either, but it's better. And my process hasn't really changed. You >>7464771 say that you aren't improving, but what did your figures look like 6 months ago? I am willing to bet that you have improved if you compare then and now.
It feels like no matter what I do I just can't understand perspective

>>7465071the boots look too heavy and combat type for the bowties to work on them. You probably went for heavier boots to pair them with her more boyish pants. I guess you wanted the bowties on the boots to add more points of interest on that area and pull the look back into more cute than boyish, but I think it doesn't work too well. It would work better with a bit more elegant or cute heel-/boots if you wanna keep the bowties. Your previous sketch showed them as those more pointy types also the bowties were placed above the ankle and had ribbons.
>>7465105Your sketch. You make an initial sketch using the reference. Then you transform, liquify and redraw until the proportions look good.

Just dosed 300mg DXM Hbr to get my mind into that low, first plateau, "free play"learning mode. feels good mane. I am rewatching Vilppu's head videos and wow, a lot of stuff I'd forgotten. Side note, I don't know if anyone else struggles with looking at digital, or feel like your digital lineart doesn't come through like your traditional: Try inverting the colors on your monitor + grayscaling it and drawing in "chalkboard mode" where your white is basically black, because you know once you finish you just re invert the colors on your display and viola, you were drawing in the correct normal way all this time! This really only works for lineart though, if you try to do it with colors inverted you'll go a little crazy i find.
>>7464447I stopped enjoying this one almost immediately so I'm going to take a break from figures I think.

20 minutes is plenty of practice for the day. How bout you and I go play some videogames? We'll have some potato chips too. You have years to improve, so what's the big deal?
>>7465186Will mention not to to do a dose like that unless you have weed on the side to smoke because the nausea from those 6 dollar whatever dye free Robitussin knock off CVS brand syrups + gelcaps is palpable. You want to smoke weed if its your first time, but ultimately, throwing up DXM is part of the trip. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6-XBTHiBHY if you try to tackle it without the weed, its harsh man. You can, try to hold it down, but when yo ufeel nauseas, just puke it up bro.

I don't get why people don't invent an overhand/underhand grip attachmen for wacom pens. Like 3D print it or something. Surely it would make the transition easier, and possibly better ergonomically.

how do i know if i've learned enough fundies to move on to something else?
>>7465762try drawing
>>7465762All you need is observational skills. If you know how to copy you can draw everything with enough resources. If you get into the mindset of grinding your fundies you're on the way to self destruct. In the worst case it's like trying to become a fighter by doing martial arts katas only.Plan a drawing, identify what you have issues with and then isolate those parts as studies and immediately try to apply it to your project.Use all the tools that aren't outright tracing to achieve it. Use as much reference as you can possibly get unless you absolutely don't need it. Don't expect it to be a fast process especially when you lack skills.I'm gonna repeat you will have to understand and have experience with observational techniques. If there's a single fundie you should do it's bargue.
>>7465320Thanks, the best thing I've found for getting things accurate is checking negative space a lot and starting from the torso to use it as a reference point. Negative space is probably the main thing through.
>>7465781that makes sense thank you
>>7465762You can never have enough fundies so you should move on whenever you feel like it. Realistically you'll spend your whole life revisiting them, so it's more important to find satisfaction in what you're doing so you can practice consistently and not burn out.>>7465752This is cool, it makes me want to try compositional stuff.>>7465733You should stop trying to line your drawings for a bit. It looks like you rushed ahead on a shaky foundation because you want to follow a prescribed digital process. Practice sketching things well first and avoid tracing over your lines until you build up confidence. You should try using an eraser instead of undo as well since it'll help you be more mindful about what you're doing and it's an active drawing tool instead of just a delete.
>>7465738Can I have one too?>>7465683Faces are one of the hardest things to draw nicely and you've done a good job. you've layered your colours in an appealing way but the face is sliding off to the left a bit. Flipping the drawing and taking breaks from looking at it is the best cure for that.>>7465620Using Hard Round is praiseworthy, especially if you're not used to digital. You can get cleaner shapes if you cut into them with an eraser. I'm not sure what's a worse feeling when you draw, boredom or frustration. Probably boredom.
I feel like there is a clash between different classes, like mages and archers (these are arbitrary examples)So, a mage says that you need to draw a pentagram and recite a spell for conjuration. And the archer says, Who needs a pentagram? You should have a strong back and watch the wind direction.
>>7465800I get what you're saying. I don't think either is wrong, just different.>>7465472This looks like the beginning of an ambient occlusion study so that's where my mind went. It looks good, cohesive.>>7465470I really like your weird proportions, but it looks a bit like hes wearing high heels and the stance is a touch feminine.>>7465455The finished one is really good but I kinda like the dopey face on the sketch more.>>7465379Is that proko's kangaroo?

first time on /ic/ so be extra mean. need construction advice/critique for this sketch. I especially dislike the legs, her feet. the shoes look off, can't visualize the right orientation, or perhaps the problem stems from how the legs are positioned.
>>7466057cant help with what's wrong but its very nice
After weeks of bashing my head against everything I can find on fabric folds and getting nowhere I've finally realized they're not so bad if you picture the original state of the fabric and then transform it step by step with tension and gravity instead of trying to magically derive the folds straight from tension and gravity. I feel stupid now.

I still can’t draw this ref, I don’t understand how to position the torso and pelvis, I don’t know how you do it, I’m not trolling, I really hate it, fuck all talented faggots...
>>7466248>I’m not trolling, I really hate it, fuck all talented faggots...I hope you're trolling. It doesn't even matter what you draw if you measure.Let me guess your process is to start with a form like the head and then you try to draw other connecting forms.
>>7466246you're not the boss of me now
>>7466268No, I’m not trolling, first the head, then the rotation of the torso, then a difficulty arises with the space between the torso and the pelvis, the pelvis itself is located very strangely, it’s impossible to draw a line of the spine to it, it’s impossible to imagine it as a meaningful structure and connect it with the torso from such an angle, you have to draw the beginning of the legs and add the pelvis to them
>>7466248There's many ways to start but you can simplify things with an envelope. Remove the negative space. Much easier to measure. Once you have it measured you can go loose and fill in forms without having to worry about proportions too much anymore. This is a beg thread and there's much better artists taking their time measuring proportions before laying down anything.
>>7464470Fuck drawing. Shitty hobby.
>>7466277I think the leg on top being raised towards the head is throwing off your sense of where the pelvis is. Focus on the leg that's touching the floor and then add the other leg.
>>7466222cute
>>7466280>>7466283The torso and pelvis, the perspective of the lying torso, the curved abdomen and sides and the pressing pelvis, these three aspects are dead-end

>>7466112What are you into? I'll take a request for the next thread
>>7466289Have you tried doing the pose yourself?
>>7466248the problem you're encountering is forced perspective, refer to pic rel, you can rotate a bent form in a way to make the curve invisible, without shading or wrapping countour lines (which you can implement naturally with drapery) it will look weird, as if the curve isnt there>>7466280you cant honestly think this is a good approach
>>7466315>>7466248also you have no right to talk about talent untill you've been drawing for a couple of years

i know you're supposed to >just draw and >just put yourself out there, but if you want to make it, what do you anons think should be the time split between improving and marketing, 50/50?do you think there's a skill level which makes the latter trivial?
>>7466345Yes, look at this>>7466347 fucking trapezoid inside the pelvis, even returning to autism of crooked boxes does not help, you can secretly brag and be proud of yourself, talented worm

>>7466370What am I doing wrong? Tell me, okay, what’s my mistake, that all the fucking bastards draw this damn ref better? Your fucking curved beans don't help, try using them yourself
>>7466371thats unavoidable with a tablet because it has no tractiondont listen to crabs telling you to that using a tool is bad, every great digital artist uses ctrl z and confidence is not gained by throwing yourself into the line of fire it's gained by getting better, you wont get better by not using ctrl z, you'll use ctrl z less when you get better>>7466380the bean is exactly what you shouldn't have been drawing you retard, that was the point of the picture, it showed you the failstate and the post gave you 2 ways to avoid it, but you're a retard that can't read or comprehend so it doesn't matter, leave, throw out your pencil and get on welfare because you're legally retarded

Don't feel like drawing but I recently made a vow to draw everyday so here's my shiet
Are there any comics or manga you think give you passive gains? Like just from seeing the human form in different poses over and over. I wanna say Slam Dunk but I haven't read many sports manga. Lots of Western comics are all about the figure though, for example I found a large collection of Question comics at the library, while reading it it kinda occurred to me that it was just figure studies over and over.
>>7466792Usually it varies because of lighting, perspective, outlines to emphasize important subjects, where forms touch (ambient occlusion), texture/details/material changes etc. It can differ depending on the medium and style too. So analyze the art with lineart you like, ask why is it thick or thin here and try to imitate their line art.
>>7466806akebi chan is the only manga that maybe me wanna study it, it looked quite unique. i do pick up the odd interesting thing from those with good art but passive gains is a stretch, i never feel like i've learned anything.
Are beg&int threads any different from the draw general?

>>7466826Dunno I'm too scared to post there
Okay I put a bit more effort in
>>7465806>ambient occlusion studyhow does that work in 2d?
>>7466831They are both caused by lighting, so they are related and coincide with each other. When forms overlap and create a crevice, no light can get into the crevice so there will always be a line there, no matter the lighting situation. If the light moved, the lineart for the shadows would change but the crevices wouldn't. Some lineart styles choose not to change the lineart when the lighting changes but will still have the lines or implied lines for the crevices. Where an object meets the ground plane is a very common situation where you can put a line for the crevice, instantly grounds the object to the surface it's on.
I'm not gonna make it....

So if you autistically copy shit you like over and over you will eventually be able to draw your own shit? How many years before I can draw anything other than mediocrely plagiarized crap?Am I right feeling suicidal because I cant sightsize copy this sketch the artist made fucking blind?
>>7467002>So if you autistically copy shit you like over and over you will eventually be able to draw your own shit? This is why drawing from memory exercise is important. Check the reference, close it, draw from memory. It trains you to draw from the picture in your head. If you can do that, then of course you can draw from your own imagination.

>>7467084Yeah I see what you mean. Thanks friend.
>>7466854this is method based on real time GI approximationit makes good looking result in a tight time windowalso it is better to consider 'bounced light' as roughly localised lightmap instead if taking it literallyand rim light iirc comes from the fresnel term and sometimes can be extremely inaccurate depending on the materiali have not so much experience in drawing but just speaking in terms of graphics
>>7467104A lot of the terms get conflated because 3D engines/shaders had to use simplified/combined versions. Pretty sure rim lighting was a photography term first. Rim lighting is from an extra light on the rim of the object. Fresnel is from the Fresnel Effect which is about how light reflects off surfaces at certain angles. So it depends on what the material is made from and where you view it from. Sometimes these were combined into one shader, and one term was used for both.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WmGrbEepFG4https://www.dorian-iten.com/fresnel/

>>7467261You really picked a tedious task. There's no fast way to do it unless you abstract the whole city into splotches of light and shadow. For accuracy you shouldn't do building by building, but section part of your painting off and then keep subdividing it. If you guess the proportions of every single building and join them together errors will compound.
>>7467271yeah subdividing makes sense. i did building by building and some of them ended up being like 3 times bigger relative to the ones i drew much earlier.
Almost 3 hours for sketch that's anatomically wrong and little bit of incredibly low quality lineart. I am really mad at myself i am not better.
How do i make the cape looks actually good here
>>7467275Just render without lineart. Saves so much time.
>>7467275i like the hair, the mouth feels wrongalso i think it should show part of her head behind/below the ear idk
>>7467277it looks more like a shell right now. like one of those nautilus Crustacean add some breaks
Draw this sketch for practice, kinda mess but i try to improve
trying to force myself to commit to a line
seppuku>>7467381not bad, keep going at it anon
trying to make myself less afraid of more advanced angles by doing shitty drawings from them
Aaaaa aaaaa
>>7467277capes (really any fabric like it) are supposed to have little waves that cover one another. you've gotta imagine the fabric's form, yours has got some folds, but they don't change the outline at all.what i'm saying might sound retarded. in that case, i'd recommend simply studying capes in art and IRL.
>>7467135>dont know the slightest thing about drawingokay I'll do more studies then what should I start with
I could probably make this way better with a bending stump. Awkward second hand study watching 2 artists stream without access to the original.
I still kinda feel like I'm just drawing characters in voids but i'm glad I can add a little flare to it
I'm looking for some artists to try different artstyle / something to emulate. What is the best way to explore and discover new artists ?
>>7467625Spend too much on art supplies for retail therapy dopamine, then look up how to actually use them.
>>7467132how did you learn to color?
>>7467657Answered to the wrong post?
all i make are trash and i wish myself to die tomorrow while i sleep because i am a fucking coward
>>7467683You don't have to shit up the board though, leave and die.
>>7467685thanks
>>7467621it's great.I like the coloring especially. What'd you recommend to get as good as you at it (besides practice, naturally)
>>7467692
>>7467703
how would you draw her torso and pelvis with boxes? could i see some examples please? it's confusing me for some reason.
>>7467713You monster
>>7467717Why is vagina so ugly?
>>7467621I really like that
>>7467702I was trying to do something like that.>>7465999It's like two tones with some lighting on top.
>>7467728All fitness chicks have these ugly vulvas. One more reason to prefer a homely chubster
>>7467196
>>7467675No. That's how I find artists. The retard in me buys shit I didn't need, and the jew in me forces me to research how to use it. This exposes me to new artists and new equipment, which I buy without needing, perpetuating the cycle.
>>7467717why do some of you always choose to draw women who look like they're on deaths door
>>7467728she's old
>>7467753she's just at a healthy weight, american
>>7467735I have noticed that non porno nude models tend to turn me off, not just sexually, but to wanting to draw. I don't know what it is, but that's part of it. I just get my drawing subjects from /pol/ slide thread OP images. If they hit the bump limit, you know they work. Pic is an example. Retarded thread, but a lot of people clicked it.
>>7467762its the opposite for me, strange, isn't it
>>7467785>>7467785>>7467785>>7467785>>7467785
