using colors and sharing for the first time ever

i’m still a beginner and i havent touched colors or shading until now

i was mostly just using a pencil this whole time with fineliners and i switched to digital two months ago but haven’t touched colors yet because it all seemed so intimidating and i didn’t know where to start

i didn’t want to do a background on my own as my first illustration so i just picked a stock photo from google

how did i do? anything i should keep in mind? this is my first illustration where i can say that it’s finished

also, my monitor fucking sucks and it wasn’t that dark on my monitor

i need a proper IPS one asap

You do not need a color accurate monitor. No one else has a color accurate monitor, and you don't have to keep to brand colors. Either you have to just adjust your monitor settings, or it's stuck in HDR mode. Either way, colors are relative, just adjust it afterwards if you need to.

Also, your darks aren't dark enough.

nah my monitor is just really bad, it’s a 2018 Samsung gaming monitor… the colors are so blown out it’s awful to work it, literally can’t see the difference between a dark red and a bright red, both are super bright

and i tried to calibrate it but i can’t get the VA look out

so you’re saying i need more contrast in my colors?
