Nice work as always. So do you have to remake the whole model for the new outfit, or is it like the outfit is a separate piece from the body? >>20206871 makes it look like you're overlaying clothes onto a preexisting nude model, which by the way looks excellent from what I can see. Cute little navel, well proportioned torso, and of course some VERY alluring breasts and buttocks. It's worth pointing out that Satoko's Ryukishi style figure has a noticeable cameltoe in her tights. The only minor issues I can make out are a slight unevenness where the thighs meet the hips, plus the crotch looking a little squished. Neither is noticeable though, especially when clothed.

Very nice. There's a few minor imperfections here and there, but overall it's a very solid model. Nice attention to detail with stuff like her shoulder blades, hipbones, spine, etc. Though of course the most eye-catching part of a nude is the erotic areas, and you did a great job there. Her breasts look a somewhat smaller without the clothes, but they're nicely shaped, like two immaculately curved orbs. Her buttocks look VERY full, especially from that angle. Their shape also successfully conveys a feeling of softness, and it makes me wonder how they'd shift about when she walks.

>Her breasts look a somewhat smaller without the clothes

Yeah, talking from experience putting even just a later of cloth on a model always gives a clear upgrade on the tits size. The naked breasts looks right to me but not sure if I should maybe make them a tad smaller for the clothed look.
Which imperfections were you thinking about? Model is still in progress so I'm always on about tweaking stuffs at this point. Guess I could model a more proper vagina too, same for nipples.

Was there any official shot of Satoko's school underwear, besides >>20206933 ?

Hm, yeah. I think you're right. As much as I love big-boobed Satoko, if you're going for her official look, then her clothed chest might be just a tad too big. The nude size is right on the money though, so maybe it'd be a good idea to make a separate nude version from the one used for outfits.

As for imperfections, the biggest one that catches my attention is how high her hips are. It makes her torso look small compared to her lower body (each thigh being roughly equal to her waist in size.) I think if you kept her the same height and just lowered her hips a little bit, it'd give her a more balanced figure while still retaining her full curves.

As for official pantyshots, school or otherwise, I can't think of any off the top of my head. There was one anime bonus clip where the wind's blowing really strong. Shion gets a pantyshot, but Satoko keeps her skirt pinned down. I'll keep looking though. There might be one I just forgot.

Lambda and Erika are definitely up there, but come on. It's gotta be Beato. Sayaka Ohara's portrayal was the most standout, Not only with regards to her performance but also the sheer amount of lines she had to do. Beato's VA could make or break the whole thing for anyone still on the fence. They need someone with a very wide range who can capture all of the different moods and demeanors Beato has. From the trollish cackling, to the regal stoicism when she gets serious. Even handling stuff like Kuwadorian Beato and all the other versions.

Yeah, I think that's better. Still stacked as all hell for her age, but more in-line with her canon depictions. It's still a bit too big for her PS2 look, but it matches Ryukishi's original look for her, so I say it's good.

As a side, this animation kinda looks like she just took off her bra with how her breasts slump down. I can see her doing that for some punishment game.

>It's still a bit too big for her PS2 look

All the girls got breast reduction for the ps2 anyway.

It's like Hanyu who is very stacked in the manga adaptions (of 7 & 8) but when you look at the Anime & Alchemist designs she's almost flat. Don't think I need to mention which version I'm planning to base myself on when I'll get to her.
>>
>>20207762
Bless you anon. Don't give in to those titty hating character designers. I was alway uncertain on whether Hanyuu was meant to be bigger or smaller than Satoko. Everyone else is clearly sorted. Rika < Satoko < Rena <Mion/Shion < Takano. Only Hanyuu is uncertain. Of course, another fun thing to play around with is the shape, giving variety to each figure in more than just proportions.

I also found this. While not official art in and of itself. It IS drawn by an official artist. I'd say it's semi-official, like that one R-18 topless Eva pic Kei Natsumi drew.

You're welcome. I'm currently working on a more normal-sized Featherine, though honestly that look suits her surprisingly well. I could see her casually lounging nude in her rocking chair, surrounded by piles of well worn pages and leather-bound books. She'd show no concern for her state of dress, glancing up and beckoning you to her.
"Child of man, I'd like to hear your thoughts on this new tale..."
She'd ramble on unconcernedly, eventually noticing your lack of focus.
"Is something the matter? You seem out of sorts."

They probably did that so it rhymes with Shannon. Most of the pronounciations are going to be different anyway so I don't see the big deal, do you want them to call Battler ''Batora'' as well?
>>
>>20210085
I wonder if they're going to give Beato a new nickname, since the nickname only makes since with the Japanese pronunciation of "Bay-uh-toe-ree-cheh".
>>
>>20210072
I noticed that too, but I waved it off because it sounds more natural coming from English speakers and rhymes with the English pronunciation of "Shannon". Most of the human cast have Western names and they're going to be pronounced in a Western way rather than "Batora" or "Jooji".
I don't expect this dub to be the best thing ever. Even if it far exceeds expectations, I'd still continue suggesting new readers to play Umineko without voices.

>>20210099
You have 5 seconds to explain why new players shouldn't use voices.
No, it being the way you listened to it isn't a valid reason
>>
You know, that delay is a huge red flag by itself. If they want more stuff, by can't it be additional stretch goal? Surely the initial stretch goal shouldn't be affected by some "very positive reaction", right?

And that decision was made public like few min before it was even supposed to start. Frankly, I think they fucked up something and are tinkering the initial stretch goal, not just extra stuff. And we know how things go ugly with incompetent people handling KS stuff.
>>
>>20210128
I believe it disrupts the natural reading speed by forcing the reader to wait for a line to finish being spoken and I recommend it as an incentive to read Umineko again because it feels like a story that has to be read more than once to get the most out of it. I think the voices are terrific and I have no problem with people reading Umineko for the first time with voices, I just suggest it for a second playthrough.
>>
>>20210142
they already broke my trust desu
>>
>>20210153
I personally don't wait for the whole voice line to finish
>>
>>20210142
I don't think it's so much that they fucked up, more that MangaGamer (the company most readily able to contact and collaborate with Catbox) asked them to push the Kickstarter back a week for advertising/promotion purposes.

Catbox is doing an AMA in a couple of days, so part of it might be that they want to fully clue in the community before opening the floodgates.
>>
>>20210168
I find that unusual, but that's your preference. At least it's not skipping through text on a first playthrough like a faggoat.
>>
>>20210128
Because voice acting can disrupt someone's normal reading either making them wait until the voice line finishes or making them cut off every line halfway through, which at that point it's kind of pointless. A visual novel designed entirely without voice acting in mind has its own reading cadence and pace that is different for every person. And perhaps some people don't want to use English voices? Plenty of people would prefer the Japanese voices or none at all, for the same reasons why some people prefer subtitles over dubbing of other media.

Why even complain about it if you know that.
>>
>>20211636
Just giving the artist some worthless feedback. The shadowing/texturing/whateveritscalled is obviously unfinished, but the mesh shape, which seems finished, is also bad.

Transforming 2D anime hairstyles into 3D (figures, 3D models, or otherwise) is hard. If the model manages to stay true to original 2D, the hair strands usually end up looking like plastic turds.

It depends. There are about 2200-2300 total sprites in the original version, though most characters have only a couple poses with various face swaps. Same for the Steam version. The PS2 version added a bunch more poses for characters, ending up with about 8100 sprites.

As for backgrounds, there's about 900 for the original/steam (they both use the same ones). Just looking at the files, the PS3 version has about 2500 "backgrounds" though this number is a bit misleading as it also includes all the CGs as well as various effects like the golden butterflies, magical barriers, the meta world's flowery overlay, etc. As with the sprites, there's various versions of many PS3 backgrounds, showing a single location in different situations like morning, night, storming, etc.

>Rika older than Satoko
I always thought it was the other way around. That makes Satoko's early puberty all the worse. The wiki lists birthdays for each of them, but i don't know if they're accurate.
Mion July 10 (February 11 in matsuri), 1966
Rena July 28, 1967
Keiichi April 13, 1967
Satoko June 24, 1972
Rika August 21, 1972
Seeing as Higurashi primarily takes place in June of 1983, that'd put Mion at 16/17, Rena at 15, Keiichi at 16, Satoko at 9, and Rika also at 9. Mion(?), Rena, and Satoko are all within about a month of their next birthdays, while Keiichi already had his.

>Would Satoko's body work for Lambda?

Honestly, I was planning to "mostly" keep the bodies the same, since the only clear physical differences we have are the tits, and even those fluctuates depending on the versions. Also why I wanted to make Satoko's body as good as possible, so that I can just reuse it for all the other girls with minimal amount of extra work needed. Already have enough work on the other assets (face, hair, outfit, poses), no need to remake from scratch parts than can just be mostly copy pasted.

>>20214461
well yeah, based on the ps3 sprite that was likely the idea, but it hardly works based on the original drawing, we would definitely see the hands.
>>

Clever. Though you may need to make more than just a few changes for some of the wildly different girls. The current model could work for any short gals like Satoko, Lambda, Bern, Erika, Dlanor, and maybe Rika with the right tweaking. But for ones like adult women you'd probably need to make the whole figure taller and more mature. I do agree that you likely won't have to make any totally new ones from scratch though.

>>20214499
Yes, definitely pantyhose. What she wear underneath (if anything) may be a mystery, but that much I can say for certain.

For the anon who asked about Dunning Kruger, you basically just get over the hill with continued experience. It's just a chart that measures people's confidence by experience levels in any given discipline, and you'll naturally be able to estimate your ability better as you gain competence in a field. If you have a confidence problem, remember that acknowledging a problem is the first step to solving it, so you're already on the way to correcting distorted estimates. Practically, just remember to copy the old masters until you've caught up to them. It's that long rite that grants you the divine (inviolable) right to actually do what you want, though that's all the way at the end of the exp metric.
If you mean Dunning Kruger regarding cognitive ability, where dumb people can't properly judge their own intelligence, that's a depressingly genetic algorithm so you're largely stuck where RNG puts you! But obviously with hard work you can cultivate your intellect to its max potential and estimate yourself better. Don't be self conscious about something you can't change when you can bruteforce your way through most challenges unless you're actually just average-dumb.
>>20210025
I'd basically just be as Erika is to Bern but for Lambda/whoever Lambda is playing as except only appear for two scenes or something. Battler is already a decisive avatar of hers, as avatars are, like how Kalki is strongly reminiscent of Vishnu's preservative epithet. A witch sponsor can sort of play this role, since witches are very much akin to gods. Lambdadelta and Bernkastel especially are fundamental forces of nature, and that makes them supernal. They have universality.

Rigged model are kinda split in two kinds, the basic ones more made more for video games, and super advanced ones that even includes muscles system deformation and other shit for movies. Those requires lots of people working on each bits.

>>
>>20214764
Oh but being a witch does take some level of metaphysical and hermeneutical prowess, especially to be nominated by a witch herself. No witch will sponsor somebody who has no understanding or achievements. In some cases (Erika), it's basically just a familiar or splinter of the witch's will, so he'll be a witch if he actually understands stuff instead of just drawing about it. Drawings are thaumaturgical so he's halfway to the theurgy and a bit further from the real magic, assuming he knows that drawings are sigils or name tags. It's actually very reminiscent of alchemy. Sigils are crude metals, what lies beyond is truly noble, and what's even further is transcendence, but even in transcendence you still have to remember you started as basic elements. Nagarjuna did say part of attaining nirvana was realizing it was not actually separate from samsara. In other mythoi, even the most noble man is still made of dirt, clay, dust, whatever else. Willpower is the aether of beatification, though, so it's still the most important part. You can't get anywhere if you don't move or try!

The results look nice. If you ever do end up uploading the models somewhere I'd probably try and learn the software so I could play with them.

Wouldn't you suppose that an artist has already elevated themselves to the level of Creator? Art is just willpower over recollection, after all, and through it entire worlds can be constructed. Yeah, the magical hierarchy refers to numerous things, and what you're talking about is the metafictional stuff I would talk about at the beginning when I told people to read Borges. One of the main meanings of the witch->voyager->creator hierarchy is about the line from character to critic/reader to author, and it's an excoriation on arrogant readers. Part of the reason voyagers have a fear of apotheosis and "eat" stories but have the ability to attain it any time is because of how burdensome being an author is, but how any reader has the chance to become an author when he or she desires, and how easy and free excoriation and consumption are in comparison. The meaning behind it is manifold, and what you're referring to is absolutely one of the main ones.

>>20214935
Oh no, I've already put forth the exact same ideas as this anon. These things are the core of metafiction, and Umineko is hugely metafictional. Invitation to the Beheading's metafictional strategies are eerily reminiscent of Umineko's, too, which is why I also suggested it once upon a time.

It'll be so nice to have a Clair anon peer in these threads, though my specialty is actually eastern religion and esotericism, not /lit/ (though it's splendid and spellbinds me like nothing else, the linguistic cosmology). But yeah definitely stick around and help raise the discussion quality cause I'd like to see you more as a peer than rival if you're actually this voracious and inquisitive.

Of course! Honestly I've been wanting to discuss things like this with someone for a while. Any pretenses of rivalry were simply an approach to be peers filtered through a bit of witchy pretentiousness (or pretentious witchiness, I wonder?) rather than out of any place of genuine smugness or malice.

I'll admit my own specialty is in Western occultism rather than /lit/ as well, which is why my last bit was a more elegantly-worded "oh fuck I've got a backlog". Any texts you'd recommend for the Eastern side of things?

So I want to get my friend to give Umineko a go, but I'm afraid the slow start will turn him away. Do you think it'd be okay to show him the kickstarter promo video to get him hooked? Or does that reveal far too much?
>>
>>20215574
Just show him the very first opening.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f184GruHq9o
>>
>>20215574
Nah, since that'd spoil the first deaths. I suppose the OP would be safe to show though.
>>
>>20215574
The promo gives away the first victims, but chances are your friend already expects people to die if he knows it's going to go murder mystery at some point. If he knows, he might get a little impatient waiting for the first crime to happen while it introduces all the characters, shows the cousins playing together, and the adults negotiating about inheritance, so having him jump straight into the deaths with the promo might work to reel him in and immediately get him thinking.
I say it depends on how little he knows and what he expects. Be honest about the slow start and talk it over, see what he thinks and wants.
>>
>>20215246
Huh? Pretentiousness? Don't you know pretentiousness can only be used in reference to unearned airs? If you're arrogant but fail, you're laughed at, but if you're arrogant and back it up, it gives you a passive charisma buff.
And yeah I like occultism. I refer to it here and there and use the Tantric consideration of Baphomet to map the scale of religions (religion to occultism). I like Kabbalism, too, but I don't know it as well as my focus. I'm looking forward to learning about these things from you, though. I know others who like occultism and you guys are always so eclectic.
For eastern tradition I like to have Umineko readers start with Schopenhauer and Wittgenstein because Vedanta will become intuitive to them and Wittgenstein wrote about the same magic as in Umineko in his Remarks on Frazer's Golden Bough. Here's a shortcut to a core of western thought you can expand on and the perfect harpoon to drag the eastern leviathan to your desk/place of study (I mean turn it into something you can understand). Borges is great because he loves Schopenhauer, has eastern influence, and is the master of postmodern metafiction, which are all either pivotal to Umineko directly or understanding the ancient writings behind it. Also he's super fun to read and easy for new readers because of the short story format. This might be like a dialetic razer for me. A go to strategy.

Thanks for the replies lads.

I've had him play the first 30 minutes of the game but he was turned off by the 'anime' characters, and complained he couldn't get into it. I figured the promo might appeal to him, but I'm not sure if it's revealing too much.
>>
>>20215706
If he's not even into anime Umineko might not be for him. I hope things go well though. It's always fun introducing a friend to something you enjoy.
>>
>>20215706
I understand not wanting to spoil anything, but sometimes the premise alone isn't enough to catch one's interest. A concept that only shows up in a later episode such as Mystery vs Fantasy and the Red Truth could be just the thing. If you feel it's necessary, spoil a little more and see if any of it sounds interesting enough for him to want to stick with it. That way revealing a few things upfront and seeing disinterest is better than wasting hours only for him to end up dropping it.
But if the 'anime' thing is his major turn off, it might not be worth the effort for either of you. If he feels forced to read it, he'll likely come up with more reasons to want to drop it. Giving him the right hook in the beginning can help him stick with it and give it a chance, but don't be too forceful and know when to give up.

The anime thing is kinda problematic for non-anime fans. But if they get past some of the antiques, you will be fine.
I usually go for the original sprites without voices since they are far more neutral in that regard.

It helps that you don't need to worry about them wanting to kill Maria with her annoyingly voiced UUUUUUUUUUU.

Just make sure to read the first chapter or a bit more with them, mentioning how well presented is the whole cast from the very beginning and hyping up stuff a bit.

Based on different sources and my interprations of the heights in Higurashi:
Satoko 137cm
Rika 137
Hanyu 150
Rena 161
Mion 163
Shion 163
Keiichi 164
Chie 165
Oishi 173
Irie 175
Tomitake 180
Okonogi 185
Akasaka 187
Kasai 190

The biggest inconsistency I saw is Hanyu, who is barely more than Rika sized in the Anime but Rena sized in the Alchemist games. Frankly all those numbers doesn't amount to much since the authors themselves didn't seemingly agree on a proper height chart.

On the side note, Hanyu and Hainiryun have the same height based on the ps3 sprites heights, I find it hard to believe.

I suppose you're right. In that case, I'll wear my pride with pride! Though I should do my best to avoid the Dunning-Kruger effect, as well. "All I know is that I know nothing" and such.

My primary focuses are Gnosticism and Discordianism, which I find very relevant in Umineko. From the Gnostic side of things, there's Witches as embodiments of Platonic ideals who make a game out of playing Demiurge, and how the Meta-World ties in with the World of Ideas, for example. On the Discordian side, Umineko's magic fits within a chaos magic framework, and Eris as presented in it isn't exactly unlike a Witch herself. It's a big read even I haven't finished yet but the Nag Hamaddi scriptures are the closest to a "primary source" for Gnosticism. I've been reading Marvin Meyer's revised translation. For Discordianism I'd recommend Principia Discordia, its "holy text", to set the stage. I put it in quotes because Discordianism is, for lack of better words, full of shenanigans. It's more of a work of metafiction that makes itself a holy text through its own rules, much like Umineko itself. After a certain point I find my /lit/ and my /x/ to be one and the same. It seems you've already read The Neverending Story, which is more influenced by Crowley's writing (which was inspired by Gnosticism anyways) so I'd recommend the Illuminatus! trilogy and The Invisibles. While it's more of a quick read at only ten pages long, Pop Magic! (also by the author of The Invisibles) is worth reading as well.

I'll admit that most of what I've read is on the subject of "practical use" of this knowledge, so to say, rather than the history or philosophy of it, but that just means I have more to read and more to learn. There's something fun in always having new knowledge to chase after!

So... which is the highest level of meta?

-Featherine as the creator of the entire kakeraverse, self-inserting into reality as mysterious female characters (Nomura and Ikuko).

-Ikuko is a simple writer who wrote Higurashi, Umineko, Higanbana and RGD.

-Everything is a fictional live-action show and the characters are just actors playing different roles. The Higurashi tea parties are the highest level of meta we've seen so far.

But that makes no sense. Keiichi, Rena and Mion and clearly supposed to be high-schoolers. Hell, Mion leaves the club to Keiichi and Rena at the end of Matsuribayashi because she's busy studying for her college entrance exams.

There is no way Rena is 13 or Shion is working in a maid cafe at 15. That would mean Rena was literally younger than Satoko and Rika when she attacked her rapist friends in her previous school and was sent to a mental hospital. It would mean Mion was 10 in Himatsubushi, which makes her sprite look absurd (it makes sense if she was 12) and her personality unrealistic.

Everything about Rena's story implies that she lived outside Hinamizawa for a long ass time and had a mental breakdown as a teenager. She can't possibly be 13 during the story if she has been in the village for more than a year (she was familiar with Satoshi when he disappeared in the previous Watanagashi) and before that spent nearly two years in therapy after her mental breakdown.

She must have been 12 or 13 when her friends tried to rape her in the ass and even younger when her mother turned into a whore.

I understand the confusion with the Higurashi ages, although the game makes it obvious that the lolis are around 11 and the others are around 16. But how do some people assume that the characters in Higanbana are anything other than fifth or sixth graders? Doesn't the context make it obvious that it's not a high school or anything of the sort? Doesn't chapter 5 mention that the younger students can't understand evil intent while the protagonist is just old enough to comprehend it?

>friends tried to rape her
How do you know she wasn't a paranoid wreck by that point? The fact that the kid didn't press charges after literally losing an eye is suspicious, but maybe Ooishi made that up.

I think Keiichi and Rena make the best couple because they are both fucked up people. Rena is a self-harming, two-faced bitch that belongs in a mental institution and plays around in literal trash piles wearing a dress. And K1 has a sadistic side that led him to hunt young lolis with a BB gun as a middle schooler. He didn't even have the excuse of the Hinamizawa syndrome.

Mion is pretty tame in comparison, which is crazy because her family literally murders and tortures people for a living. And she is supposedly learning all about that so she can become the next head. Honestly, her cognitive dissonance regarding this shit is pretty disturbing. She is the friendliest person you'll ever meet, but she doesn't hesitate to force her sister to rip out her fingernails when she's acting as the Sonozaki heir.
>>
Would a Sonozaki Oryou sprite have worked at all? I was always saddened by the fact that she didn't have a sprite, but I wonder if Ryuukishi's style would fit a character like that. I love his art, but all his character look kind of goofy in a way or another, which wouldn't fit Oryou at all.

Could you imagine Leo or Meijiu drawn by Ryuukishi? They would totally lose their presence. Now I understand why he let different artists work on RGD. It's a very different type of story that wouldn't work if every single character had that certain goofiness that comes with his art.

Infodump anon here.

Pretty sure our own Meta is the highest level Umineko has ever reached. and it's mostly mirrored from what we could expect from Rokkenjima Prime.

To be more specific:

1- The highest layer, Our “IRL” world:
We, the goat readers, and Ryukishi, the writer, are part of the story in a pretty not so subtle way in our own game, the same we see happening with Ikuko and the goat theorists from Rokkenjima Prime, except Ikuko is a complete asshole who never gave the full context for the readers (to be fair, one of the few things she did for a good cause in the story). We, instead, got context for everything about the story inside the story, and even the outside of the very story (not to mention extra hints, contents and the manga confirmation in the real world), which bring us to...

2- Kakeraverse, the Sea of Fragments:
This is where the metafictional concepts, alternative interpretations of real world personalities and concepts, such as Willard and Dlanor.

And of course, potentially even Ryukishi himself as Featherine, although not necessarily Ikuko, as well explained by Featherine that she isn't necessarily representative of her actual Witch self, a Writer, much like Ryukishi wouldn't quite be represented by her in the Kakeraverse, nor Willard with real world Van Dine in the eyes of this given author who created the character based on an alternative "futuristic" version of him after getting along with the times posthumously.

One could easily consider it being heavily influenced by some of the concepts of a Jungian Collective Unconscious interpretation of a sort, much like you would see in a Persona game or even Fate Stay Night to an extent. Umineko being a ridiculously more complex example of such, but my best bet would be that Japanese people just love Jung dearly. There's also Remember11, but that one is quite the more explicit alternative take. For a very similar example still not quite as deep as Umineko's own rabbit hole, see Stephen King's “The Dark Tower” (specifically, Books 6 & 7).

Regardless of that actually being relevant to the topic or not, this is the actual layer that connects our very interactions between fiction, reality, our own imaginations, concepts, theories, and even feelings towards a determined element of a particular work, as well as their impact on the story per se depending of what kind of elements are put into play for us to interfere with them in such a direct way even from our Real World perspective.

See for example, EP8's Battle of the Golden Land section, with the Rokkenjima Prime goats eating up the “Catbox” with their own theories, since, contrary to us, they have absolute no idea about which answer they should be getting from Ikuko as for the truth behind the incident, and Ikuko's own decision in that layer that brought them to drop out of interest because of her ultimate coup-out as the writer.

That would be an example on how the meta of the meta worked to create modifications on the very plot because that. In the case of the counterpart with our real world, it could be Ryukishi's personal experience in life influencing in the final product of his own creations, as he sure used those elements a lot in his visual novels and books thus far.

I could give some examples later, but as this went for too long, next would be...

3- Rokkenjima Prime (the “IRL” in Umineko, where the Rokkenjima Massacre took place for real)

I love how you can instantly tell which series a characters comes from just by their shading and color alone.

Higurashi characters have flashy, shiny hair colors and massive eyes. Umineko characters are drawn with softer outlines and colored with the Paint bucket tool (basically uniform colors with barely any shading). And Higanbana characters are a mix of the two styles with super dark, practically black shadows.

I would love a silly non-canon crossover where all the characters keep their original visual style in different worlds, making them feel alien and out of place because of the clashing styles.

Now, this is where things get interesting, from the perspective of the actual world inside the story. While the Kakeraverse can contain all Ryukishi’s… hell, all of the world authors’ works and their respective readers’ collective ideas and interactions surrounding said work’s not so timeless interpretations, influences and in their respective imaginary circles, Umineko’s, as well as other Ryukishi’s works and alternative interpretations of our reality, are but a fragment of that circle of his, which includes the IRL people who enter in contact with it, and naturally, the author himself.

Meaning, if this world is mirroring our own world, including the Kakeraverse in our plane of existence which connects real world and the collective unconscious, it would naturally have its own. And that’s also where things get REALLY tricky. Since Rokkenjima Prime has its own set of interactions with the imaginary inside the imaginary, and not only that, the imaginary of the imaginary of the imaginary gets played as well, from Tohya’s personal perspective, it really is not that difficult not to lose track of what the hell is going on with each scene and their proper classification in terms of meta layering.

Therefore, let’s enter inside of those later, and explain from the higher layers what was presented to us from the lowest on the get-go (ever since the perspective is given to Battler, at least).

Ryuukishi, most likely “represented” by Featherine, which is explicitly “represented” by Ikuko inside the Rokkenjima Prime layer, is writing stories from her personal perspective and interpretations about the reality that happened during the Rokkenjima Massacre, with the help of our not quite survivor Tohya, which would be Battler Ushiromiya’s identity from there on, after getting his brain damaged after his nice boat scene with Yasu in the Magic Ending of EP8.

These stories are own their own world’s perspective situated in a lower layer that mirrors the Kakeraverse especifically inside that very fragment which would be Umineko. Inside that very fragment Umineko, there isn’t any possibilities of the tragedy not happening, ever, as stated by Bernkastel in EP7. That may not be true outside the Umineko fragment in OUR kakeraverse instead, since there are other people who could interpret it in a non-canonical way in there, and that’s our reality to us. Tecnically, one could say even Rosatrice is canon to how Umineko as a work functions, but not necessarily inside what could be called the “Canon” kakera/fragment for it, which Ryukishi’s shared with us in visual novel form.

In each case, as this kakera has also this mirroring of our own kakeraverse, that means the layers in which these stories are contained into are different as well. And amazingly, as if the rabbit hole couldn’t go any further, we reach the Gameboard scenarios inside the interpretation of what Tohya’s reading within his own personal view of what those bottled stories about the Rokkenjima incident were all about (which prompted him to co-write Forgeries with Ikuko, get Eva’s Diary with the actual truth in her own perspective (EP7’s tea party would be Bernkastel interpretation of the content inside of it) at some point in time in Rokkenjima Prime before Ange’s personal investigation, which brought her to meet Ikuko).

Soooo, to make matters not that confusing, since Rokkenjima Prime has SO MUCH going for it overall:
Rokkenjima prime mirrors our real world, including its own version of the kakeraverse in which Umineko is contained as an existent work.

And, because of that bellow it, we of course have:

4- The Imaginary of Rokkenjima Prime’s own self-contained reality as a fictional work in our world (let’s just go with the Imaginary Kakeraverse):
As I detailed so much of what our Kakeraverse represents already, this will be relatively short. It’s pretty much the very same thing, except that it is contained exclusively in the fictional reality that is Rokkenjima Prime’s (Umineko’s) world.

Meaning, concepts, imaginary friend, mythos, collective unconscious of those imaginary characters towards fictional concepts of that world that mirrors our own, are all in here as well. That could include Sakutarou’s existence as a creation of one’s imagination, as well as the reflection of Kinzo in Natsuhi’s own hopeful interpretation of his figure and feelings towards her as a member of the Ushiromiya family, as shown in EP5.

It also houses all of the books, and the respective kakeras that are created regarding the authors of that very word and their own interpretations and influences of their own work inside that layer. Which naturally bring us to:

Oh but Dunning Kruger only matters if you're unaware of it! Nobody aware of Dunning Kruger will forget that, as long as they can still look to the stars, they're not done learning yet, and that anyone with a true appreciation of their discipline will know even the deified geniuses of the past took still decades of tireless discipline learning from their predecessors. They've sacrified themselves to beat a true path for us, the posterity, and in return we follow it until we've mapped it all out. Only a fool will go off the beaten path for the sake of originality, the meretricious cloak of the untalented and naive.

You'll probably get my focuses just by reading old threads, but I'm mainly into Hinduism (specifically Vedanta and Shaktism) with Mahayana and Daoist teachings secondary. I like divination, too. Mainly yarrow stalk and tarot. Divination has incredible wisdoms behind it, especially as a recognition and exploitation of the greatest human archetypes. I've come here from the Schopenhauerian strain, especially Wittgenstein and Borges. Dante/German literature to round him out, also all providing easier close reading for Umineko. I use Gnostic, occult, Hermetic, and Kabbalist thought as peripheries to consolidate the universality of the rest. And yeah, /lit/ and /x/ will always eventually coalesce; occultism is just philosophy with confusing and miscontrued theory and practices. Alchemists were more metaphorical than chemists and wanted to explore self-actualization but that mirrors that physical science, in a sense reminscent of Nyaya-Vaisheshika. The philosophical take on it became Hermeticism; the alchemical take chemistry. I'd like you to teach me some more on Gnosticism and Discordianism some time, and I'll let you read of my beliefs in relation to Umineko throughout the threads. I know Discordianism has its meta traits and draws from Daoism, so I'll get into it easily. Also thank you for you recommendations, and please tell me more about how Gnosticism connects to Umineko, like how only a select few pieces will perforate maya and catch moksha, to apotheosis, and like how only a select few pieces will take Sophia's desperate lifeline, the divine spark, to beatification.

5- The written layer inside of Umineko’s imaginary Kakeraverse, inside of Rokkenjima Prime’s reality, inside of our own Kakeraverse, inside our own reality, let’s put as (Layer inside the kakeras of Rokkenjima’s Prime Kakeraverse).

This would be what represent the Rokkenjima Prime for us, in their (the people of Rokkenjima Prime) own perspective. Being more specific, the layer in which their own “Umineko”, the “Golden Witch” series of forgeries based on the bottled manuscripts written by Yasu and found/studied by the Witch Hunters ever since.

However, there’s a catch this time around. Their own perspective doesn’t quite englobe what the very authors have as referential material for which to effectively determine what is to be considered canon for their “Umineko” or not. They are just as much of theorists as us before the conclusion of the story (and also we got answers, while their readers did not) and they don’t quite know what the real factual story is based on the Rokkenjima Massacre’s reality in their very real-world perspective, different of us, who have everything elaborated as one huge story in which these concepts are contained and properly explained.

Meaning, for each particular “Episode” (inside the Rokkenjima Prime, not the ones in our own IRL world), such as Yasu’s manuscripts and plans, as well as Ikuko and Tohya’s forgeries to an extent) we have YET ANOTHER LAYER to be aware of, that being:

6- The Meta-World/Purgatorio (Tohya’s own interpretations and perspectives while self-inserting himself in his own memories and connecting them to the Rokkenjima Prime’s “Umineko” kakeras, specifically, his own take inside even the stories he is writing or being part of with his old self).

Some may consider this as a fragment on its own inside the Rokkenjima Prime’s Kakeraverse, inside the… let’s denominate… “Witch Hunt” circle, but of course, still not canonical to what Eva’s diary (canon) has to say about the reality in which the book was based on, in her own memories and life experience of the tragedy. However, this layer is created inside each of these “Episodes” kakeras by Tohya in order to solve the puzzle behind his very own interpretation of that text, of which only he and us, readers of Umineko who can see his own perspective, can see.

Therefore, this is a layer inside the layer that represents each individual reality regarding the Bottled Manuscripts AND EVEN Ikuko’s and Tohya’s own forgeries, in Tohya’s very unique perspective as an amnesiac with memories of a person he doesn’t consider himself, and yet, was a part of this incident of which he is trying to find answers for, and he is where he confronts Beatrice as a concept of his mind, who is more than implied to be Beatrice’s posthumous existence inside Rokkenjima Prime’s kakeraverse visiting his own plane of interpretation… or maybe that’s what one who’s chosen the Magic Ending would say, a Trick person would coldly regard as his own delusional damaged mind trying to reconstruct what Beatrice should represent for him as the culprit for the incident, as well as what does she mean to him, who is she, what are her reasons, in his skeptical point-of-view, at least initially.

And the places in which he “impersonates” himself as Battler Ushiromiya, and our VERY FIRST perspective in the whole story from Episode 1 (not counting Kinzo’s prologue scene) is:

7- The Gameboards
I think I don’t even need to explain this one. This is what our perspective in the story was mostly all about, which was solely being analyzed from Meta-Battler’s perspective from the first Tea Party onwards. Piece Battler is his detective perspective following what was written in the manuscripts and his own research material, hypothesis and recollections (in short, their forgeries).

And there we have it. All Umineko’s seven metafictional layers. ABRIDGED (there are many details to pay attention for even with all of this information, so consider this as being a TL;DR of a sort).

Umineko is just too vast.

Wouldn't the Meta-World and Gameboards be, to an extent, not only Tohya's interpretations and perspectives but Ange's own interpretation of the texts of what's written with what little she remembers of her family, and the hope of meeting them again? While you might consider Ange telling Battler to come home in EP4, as Battler fighting Tohya and trying to resurface, in EP7 and EP8 it serves as a way of showing Ange's reaction to the Rudolf family theory, and retrospection of the memories she has of the Ushiromiya family, which pushes her to move on and realise all the pain that Eva was shouldering.

Yes, this element for example is more or less what I intended by saying that this is a short version of a sort.

In the case of Ange's timeline of events (in my opinion, one of the trickiest part of the visual novel to understand, regarding the meta narrative), she was guided by Bernkastel, who could be considered Featherine/Ikuko's piece/cat, towards Tohya's own fragment of reasoning and especulation (the Purgatorio layer). Since I wanted to maintain a more neutral discourse for both sides, and this is one of the parts of the story that actually needs you to accept the magic side, I've decided to leave it be for that longer explanation eventually.

I'm yet to find a counterpart for a fool-proof trick interpretation of that scene which would link Ange to Tohya's own reasoning and would somehow make her meet with him in that particular purgatorio fragment without Bernkastel/Featherine's direct helping hand by the end of EP3 to the end of EP4.

I prefer not to use the manga in my explanations, and when I do, I mention it as a reference. Mostly, just not counting some goodness from the Confession, the content is all there to be found in the VN if you search hard enough.

But I don't blame anyone for not rereading such a big and complicated VN, and respect the manga as an easier "answer book" alternative.
>>
>>20225834
I reread the vn before reading the manga, but that's mostly because it wasn't out at the time. but I still think the manga is more than just an easy answer for those who don't want to think. In my mind, it's more of a way to check your answers AFTER taking the time to come up with your own interpretations and theories. It also serves as a way to enjoy the story again in a new way that makes things feel fresh.
>>
>>20225858
A great one at that, I agree. I think I'm just too bitter since the manga went so explicit with some things, zero subtleness. I actually really loved it and would give it a 10 easily. I just dislike how now people recommends it over the VN for being "the complete version" or something, when it isn't really the case, and it doesn't come close to being a VN alternative, and more of a complement (and only by EP7 & EP8, at that).
>>
>>20225904
I would never recommend it as an alternative (except maybe Episode 8, but even then only tentatively). It's more like something I'd recommend to those who've finished the vn and want more.
>>
>>20225730
I mean because lambdadelta herself is so small but since the edit is so well done it still looks good
