This is a Japanese language learning thread designed by and for those interested in traditional otaku media such as anime, manga, light novels, and Japanese video games.
If you have no interest in otaku media or want to request a translation, this is not the thread for you.

Read the guide before asking stupid questions.

>>20216884
start off learning japanese by reading
watch raw anime as well so when you read your brain knows how japanese is supposed to sound but don't expect to learn much from it with your low vocabulary and poor listening comprehension
as your japanese ability grows from reading and your listening compression grows from watching raw anime, you'll gradually start understanding the raw anime you watch and you can begin learning from that as well
>>
>>20216911
learn words not kanji
>>
>>20216914
Is it better to watch stuff you've already seen subbed?
>>
>>20216918
for sure for learning, but it's more boring
>>
>>20216918
don't force yourself to rewatch stuff that you don't want to. actually being interested in the anime you're watching is the most important thing.

i would argue that it's actually better to watch new shows. when you rewatch a show, there's not much motivation for you to pay attention and actually try to figure out what people are saying since you already know what happens and can follow along anyway just based on your memory. when you watch a new show for the first time, however, you'll be more likely to pay attention to the dialogue since that's your only path to figuring out the plot (besides whatever surface understanding you can glean from the visuals and such).

just pick up a bunch of shows at the start of each season and drop whichever ones don't hold your interest.
>>
>>20216949
what do you do when the show drops a huge info dump on you?
should you just ignore it in the beginning and move on?
>>
>>20216966

it's up to you

you could ignore it, or you could try rewinding, trying to catch words and then looking those words up in jisho and seeing if you can figure out what was said. i think it's a good thing in general to try to catch words which you feel are important and look them up, but don't overdo it to the point where you're constantly pausing and rewinding or your watching experience will just feel like a chore and you won't want to do it (pic semi-related).
>>
>>20216966
Either watch with Japanese subs or google the script and read that.

devilman crybaby
goblin slayer
gridman

>is this really their best effort?
Can you do better without needlessly complicating it, and preserve the original intent of being a light/fast jab at the character? That's not to say there isn't a better way, but it's harder to find perfection than it is to settle for something that mostly works. If you learn Japanese you're going to be able to understand the intent behind the words much better than any translation can communicate, so I'd say to just keep at it.

What do you do when you get to the point where you can't fulfill your new words quota for the day? I do 30 new cards/day but the input of new cards has started to slow down and I can't read for hours on end because I've got university + a side job so more than one hour a day is kinda impossible. Should I get a secondary deck to draw from or just accept there will be days where I don't get 30 new words?
>>
>>20217732
if you're not mining enough either don't worry too much about constantly having new words on your backlog or lower your new card load, why do people ask such retarded questions

No damage is permanent except for brain damage.

The concept of permanently crippling your language ability is retarded.
There are only 2 modes. Learning and not learning=forgetting.
If you're properly reading and listening you're learning.

If you're fucking around and doing things that don't work it's simply the same as doing nothing. You're just forgetting.

>>
>>20217987
Once you form the connections in your brain they're there forever. People relearn languages they stopped using as a young child and have since forgotten and have a much easier time of it than learning a language they never knew, which means they're reactivating parts of their brain that have gone unused for decades. God help you if you cripple yourself by reading shitty grammer guides

I don't know the context of that video but it's just that that person never actively practiced pronouncing Japanese correctly. Nothing that can't be fixed with some effort.

It's just that most people are satisfied with being mediocre and don't put in any effort beyond that. Just look how many immigrants in yurop and murrica still have a heavy accent after living there for over a decade.

Yeah now sitting on the bench outside stores also counts as eating in, which has 10% tax on it rather than the 8 you pay by merely taking it home.
But of course some questions are bound to emerge: what if you stand up in front of the store's bench? is that eating inside? as soon as you define "イートイン" as something that doesn't necessarily happen "イン", then people are going to find some way of not paying the extra 2% in tax

work between 8-12 hours a day so I don't have as much time as I like. Usually, around 6am I do a few pages of my Genki workbook or put on a podcast of aJapanese show. (terrace house probs). IF I get a break from work, I work on lingodeer or message some folks on Tandem (kind of like hello talk). After work, I hit the books studying whatever it having trouble with(grammar atm). I put on a good podcast again and go do some Japanese vocab drills. I also practice my speaking and listening skills. When I am off work I treat it as a half day study session starting at 6 or 7 am and ending around 12 or 1pm Those days consist of Genki, JFZ, Flashcards, heavy Japanese drills and talking with native speakers.

it's been an issue for me too. i'll say that after about a month of reading i went back to the beginning of a text i was reading and i could more easily parse the words, even if i didn't know/couldn't remember what those words meant. so your ability to stop seeing japanese as infinite combinations of random words smushed together will improve with time, as impossible as it seems at first.

That's probably not a bad thing if you're trying to get to a conversational level in a few months. I watched someone pretty young who seemed perapera in multiple languages including J and K. Not even a language e-celeb. Learned jap through university courses.
>>
>>20219877
conversational Japanese is very vague - could he talk on every normal topic or was it just the basic questions about the weather and where the bank is?
>>
>>20219868
I don't exactly know how they define passive listening, but I listened to a lot of j-rock and j-pop for years before learning anything about Japanese and it made me aware of the sounds the language can produce.

Though listening to music is more like active listening?

this is a very nebulous benefit that Matt goes on and on about but I doubt it ultimately does much for you

nuke's been passively immersing for years and he's clearly not "aware of of the sounds" of Japanese in any way
>>
It must be weird for people immersing in a language that literally has more sounds in it than their own.
>>
>>20219909
Plus even if he gets a few guinea pigs to delay reading for an entire year and they end up having good accents it wouldn't be enough evidence that reading cripples anything, because their results would be confounded by the fact that only a highly autistic (and probably smart) person who values their accent would force themselves to go through with it. Maybe they'd end up sounding good either way.

I was commenting on how someone who had different goals from a typical /djt/er could probably benefit from doing something different from what's recommended here. I've only seen a short self introduction type monologue in Japanese that seemed obviously unrehearsed but it was barely behind her Korean which benefits from her going akatt by living in korea. She's not a language or otaku e-celeb so I don't have much to base on aside from diction and word choice from a short monologue but since it was a requested aside from her typical content I don't doubt that she's at least on a normal conversational level in nip. She's definitely that in korean.

not really because they're never used in the same context, if you use のは like that after a noun it's possessive:
彼のは嫌い = I hate his (thing)
but のこと does something different and refers to the noun itself:
彼のことは嫌い = I hate him

maybe you're thinking of just こと when it comes after a verb, which is sorta comparable to の

when people think of "average" they think of their family or peers. so if you come from a decent place (have a good number of family members who went to college for example), who you think are average are actually above average.

if you come from a truly average place you understand just how stupid the average is and how easy it is for a foreigner to acquire more vocab than a native.

You can learn how to identify words without even knowing what they mean, which makes this process easier. Find someone or something on youtube that talks clearly and enunciates, bring up the CC for it, and follow along. Repeat a clip many times to get a feel for what is being said. Podcasts are nice for this.

Also unironically 真夏の夜の淫夢 parts 1-3 if you're having trouble deciphering conversation. The recording quality is shit and they mumble, but everything is fully transcripted and you can use it as a jumping off point for similar quality tv stuff scattered around the internet. The more junk you listen to and decrypt, the more used to the language's sound you will get.

How much are you actually reading each day?

Just saying you've been reading for 6 months doesn't actually tell us very much. That could mean you've read anywhere from 90 hours to 1800 hours if you don't give us an idea of how much time you usually invest each day.
>>
>>20223145
There are some days I go without reading but it isn't often. Sometimes I read for 30 minutes sometimes I read for 4+ hours or all day. I think it would even out to around 2 hours on average each day
>>
>>20223171
You're only at around 360 hours in that case which isn't all that much in the grand scheme of things. I wouldn't get too stressed out about still struggling with stuff at this stage, and I definitely wouldn't worry about outputting.

Consider that well-know AJATTers and people like Moogy who got good in relatively short time-frames would basically read and listen all day, so by the time they were reaching a high level around a year and a half into the process, they had probably invested a bare minimum of 2500 hours into learning Japanese by that point. Most likely they had put in in excess of 5000 hours.

Anyway, you might benefit from reading something easier than VNs and LNs like manga (doesn't mean you have to drop VNs and LNs, you can read more than one thing at a time). Since the language in manga is more simple, it should allow you to focus in on the basics more easily than you can with VNs and LNs which tend to have lots of long sentences and broad vocabulary ranges. You'd probably do well to watch some raw CGDCT anime as well.
>>
>>20223090
you need to practice production to get good at it unlike what smartasses will tel tell you
>>
>>20223199
Thank you for the help, I'll take your advice. I think the reason I didn't spend more time on manga was because I thought I understood it well enough and wanted to move onto something more challenging, but perhaps I may have sped through things and skimmed over the basics when I hadn't really learned them as well as I thought I had. That is reassuring though, my worst fear is ending up like those redditors who spend 5+ years learning Japanese and are still at JPLT N4. I thought I should be making more progress by now so I figured I was doing something fundamentally wrong.

If you know 1500 words it's not going to be worth going through 2k and the smaller vncore, and you're going to run into newspaper words if you keep doing 6k/10k. I think your options are either to keep doing the newspaper words or quit and start a mining deck.

conscientiousness is negatively correlated with iq though, so those with big thick manly brains may accidentally assume that 6 hours a day ankidroning is mandatory and then get disheartened when they burn out and don't have the will power to study more than 30 mins every day.

conscientiousness aside, the gains wouldn't scale linearly either. if you're smart and are making great gains with 30 min/day study, don't think you'd be making 12x more progress with 6 hours/day.

>>
>>20225248
https://apps.ankiweb.net/docs/manual.html#falling-behind
If you fall behind in your reviews, Anki will prioritize cards that have been waiting the longest. It does this by taking the the cards that have been waiting the longest and showing them to you in a random order up until your daily review limit. This ordering ensures that no cards will be left waiting indefinitely, but it means that if you introduce new cards, their reviews won’t appear until you’ve gotten through your backlog.
>if you introduce new cards, their reviews won’t appear until you’ve gotten through your backlog.
>their reviews won’t appear until you’ve gotten through your backlog.
>their reviews won’t appear

considering that anyone who uses monkey with enough new cards per day absolutely definitely will hit the review limit you do need to set it to a value that you're not actually hitting every single day

and if it's just a tiny bump you can deal with it and do all of your reviews

or you could just not use Anki
>>
that's one hell of a freudian slip but I'll buy it
>>
>>20224788

>>
>>20225293
that's why I set it to 20% above my average reviews. Ideally anki would do this for me as well as turning off new cards whenever I actually hit the limit. The point is to prevent that oh fuck there are this many reviews when you miss a day or two not hit it every day like an idiot

Thinking about it, this is the ultimate resource for learning Japanese.
You have audio and text, and thousands of pages.
What more do you need?
>>
>>20226003
You're missing the compelling content.

What could be more compelling than slaves, whores, plagues and sin?

They even have a downloadable zip with Japanese and English in parallel.

Not when I'm watching for fun. I will if I treat that time as reading time.
>>
>>20226009
you have to have a pretty good understanding of the bible to truly appreciate the holy works of romeo tanaker
>>
>>20226025
If you need the english you're probably not at the level where you should read the bible to be honest
>>
>>20225951
islamic countries weren't really doing much by the 16th century
>>
>>20226032
I didn't say I need it I said they have it.
I'll recommend this for beginners from now on.

One chapter a day, when they're done they should be fluent. All thanks to Jesus.

They're using the Gini coefficient to try proving income diparity or whatnot but Japan is one of the top-ranking nations when it comes to this metric https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_income_equality

Yet another full of shit sociology article that tries too hard to prove the point it's trying to make

japans not in a bad spot guys you guys are all gonna learn japanese and go there and do some nakadashi with some average looking sluts take responsibility and repopulate the country and build it even better than it already is (pretty good)
>>
>>20226337
https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2018/10/14/business/economy-business/japan-pledge-2019-tax-hike-address-debt-mountain-reports/

10% sales tax dude. They won't be able to afford condoms and that's how they're gonna solve the population issue.
>>
>>20226324
Lower=better with this metric (0=perfect equality)
baka
>>
>>20226337
this is my plan actually
they don't even have to be average looking
>>
>>20226343
yea everyones still ok tho they can afford it

japans actually a pretty wealthy country and thats why rap looks so retarded when people try to act like they live in and eat out of the garbage

of course theres homeless and stuff but thats less due to poverty and more to do with mental illness
>>
>>20226337
What would happen to the honour of the family of a girl that get's nakadashi'd by a whiteman who doesn't take responsibility and escapes the country instead?
>>
>>20226347
Japan's metric in 80's - 0.345
Japan's metric now - 0.462

????????????????????????

>>20226337
Plus they have a lot of the right steps in place and they'll just pass more laws to boost pop and immigration later. It's going to bring in good people. In 200 years it will easily be the smartest nation. When the economy dips the otaku are going to go into rabbit mode and breed the hell out of them females. I suspect a pretty big population boom in their future.
>>
honestly thered prolly be more issues if people didnt just kill themselfs as much as they do

suicide is pretty popular right now more than usual ftl : (
>>
>>20226371
Suicide is actually pretty cool. In the west there is this notion every needs to live, but not everybody is cut out for it. Life is a challenge and it should be.

right life is a challenge so you should just live it out and die with your boots on

but kids are mad pussing out right now because current generation of youth has no strong morals
