it's an amazing parallel compared to slutrisa with her boob window (not that there's much boob to see)
>>
>>47924400
such posture, too
>>
God I wish I was there
>>
>>47924413
Really? Look at her! Sitting with her back straight, leggs almost crossed and her hands on her lap. Not one impure thought in her.
Not to mention that Reimu is wearing a shorter, more revealing dress.
>>
>>47924410
The boob window is CUTE and STYLISH
it in no way is any more slutty than reimu's armpits hanging out for everyone to see, gawk at and touch themselves later while imaginine huffing the 'mu fumes.
>>
>>47924400
How polite! Good posture, polite manners, a nice smile, professional clothes, what a woman!
>>
>>47924433
While I agree with the boob window being cute, it takes a special kind of pervert to get excited over armpits.
>>
>>47924098
reimu wearing heels is really cute since it's never something I've imagined
>>
>>47924098
They all look very cute and nice here. I like Reimu's skirt and Sanae's professional tie. No idea why Marisa is wearing something a little revealing when she has no assets to show though
>>
>>47924463
...and also sumireko is there
>>
>>47924471
Hey now, Sumireko always wears her uniform in public. She also didn't bring her cape, even she wanted to look somewhat respectable. Also, you should appreciate her effort to stay quiet, an effort her blonde colleague didn't make.
>>
>>47924098
I always forget that Youmu and Sakuya do have social lives outside of being patsies to a bunch of monsters.
It's rare, but they aren't tied to the hip to their master outside incident solving.
>>
>>47924537
Sakuya's got a lot of 'social' apperances alone, but Youmu doesn't, so it's rarer for fanworks to present her outside of the netherworld, Grimoire of Usami did tell us that at least Sanae considers Youmu kind of cool
>>
>>47924537
We already know that Youmu has a shit workcontract. She doesn't get vacation days, free weekends or payment for her hardwork
>>
>>47924834
Does she? We do see her a few times at Reimu's shrine alone, but most of the time she is just doing stupid shit that Remilia asks for.
Like trying to kidnap Lily White, or find her master's ugly new pet.

>>

Reisen is the only lunarian the villagers see regularly (maybe except for Kaguya, but they might not know she is one), they probably think it's moonie fashion.
>>

>>
>>47927638

She runs from Marisa because you would too if she wanted to talk, but Reisen did turn around and ran back to her when the midget dropped the hard R(abbit) and needed correction. I wouldn't say she's not doing a good job, she's just not nearly as stressed out as she was before and she's comfortable with being an earth rabbit. So who cares if her ears flop out when she's putting on the medicine seller role?
From the villager's perspective, Marisa is harassing a hard working girl trying to make an honest living. You just don't do that! But what can you expect for the manners and tact of a forest dweller?

I can't remember if this is before or after Akyuu started writing mystery books as Agatha Chris Q, but if it's after, they're probably that. If it's before, it could be anything (but given Reimu, I wouldn't be surprised if they're ultra girly romance novels)

Ah, I see why all the bosses are female. It'd be unrealistic for Reimu and Marisa to fight a male. I carpent the wood, I do this because I am the carpenter’s son. My dad, too, was the carpenter’s son; his dad, too, was the carpenter’s son; his dad was a seamster, thus, his dad shunned him from the family, raising his baby boy as his own and taking his wife, too. Poor great-grandpa didn’t deserve it in my opinion, he was just clothcurious, is all. Happens to the best of us… A dark time in the family’s history.

But that’s in the past, and today I get to make a real table for the cute blacksmith with the weird multi-colored eyes (not saying they’re ugly!). That’s why I find myself carrying a heavy log of wood through the roads of my beloved village. But not just any log, this one’s special, it’s Kōyamaki!

It’s funny, I used to hate when dad made me pick up the materials and carry them back on my own, to, as he said, “toughen you up”. I didn’t get it at the time, but look at me now! I can lift the entire Forest of Magic on my shoulder if I put my mind to it.

I really ought to trust my father more. He’s a full fledged carpenter, while I’m a novice at best.

Another nugget of knowledge my father holds over me due to his years of expertise is the type of wood. I suggested- is someone watching me?

I look behind me, very careful to not move the wood too much as to not hit someone by accident, and see no one. “Hm, that’s odd. Surely there was someone, I do have a very keen sense of danger after all,” I say to myself. Out of the corner of my eye I spot a nice lady with long brown hair, glasses, and a leaf stuck in her hair. What a klutz!

“Excuse me, miss?” I approach her while waving.

The lady looks at me for a second, then a sparkle of recognition appears in her eyes. “My world… you must be the carpenter’s son!” She walks towards me, holding her index finger to her chin, still analyzing me. “Not a single doubt about it. You have got his nose!”

I stand taller and puff up my chest. “Yes indeed, that’s me!” Feels good to be recognized.

The lady eyes me up and down. “Hm, most certainly you are.”

Yep. She can tell I’m my father’s kid thanks to the massive wood I carry around me at all times! But the way she keeps staring starts to make me feel a bit self-conscious. I’m still growing, my wood isn’t as large as what dad carries, just yet at least.

I steer the conversation to the matter at hand. “Excuse me for the weird question, but have you seen someone following me around?”

The inquiry seems to snap the lady out of her trance. “Ah? No, don’t worry. Say,” she glides over my concern real easy, “is your father still married to that… your dearest mother…” That your dearest mother? What an odd way to talk. Maybe she’s not from around here.

“Yes, of course. Mom and pops are very happy together!”

She looks to the side. “Darn. The same as back in Geidontei, then…”

“Hum, you don’t seem like the kind to go there.” Only old dudes frequent that bar. Probably to ogle at the girl working there. Some people have no respect for women! Their mothers would be very mad!

The lady gives a very elegant laugh. “Oh my, whatever do you mean by that, boy? Are you, perhaps, implying I look too young to be one of the usual patrons?”

I tilt my head to the side and give her a once-over again. “But you are, right?” She doesn’t look like a perverted geezer.

She smiles. Wow, that’s a mighty wide grin she’s got there, impressive face muscles! Could do with a little better dental hygiene. “It might shock you to hear this, but I’m the exact clientele for that particular establishment, perhaps even more so than you could possibly imagine.”

Wait… could it mean… she is a MAN! And OLD! And, most crucially, PERVERTED!

In hindsight, I should have known. No woman would go out smelling of cigarette ashes and booze, at least to that degree.

The realization dawning on my face makes her giddy, for some reason. “You know, you aren’t part of our usual… group of interest. You’ve no job, age, or wife. However, if I don’t go out for the exotic, maybe someone else will,” her face turns sour. “Heavens forbid some stinky vixen got her tick-infested paws on you before I.” She - or he - holds out a hand, her face returning to a smiling one. “Come in me.”

Doesn’t she mean come WITH me? “Do you know something about who followed me?”

The lady(?) shrugs. “Eh, sure.”

“Sweet!” Normally, this’d be very suspicious, however, my very keen sense of danger is telling everything is a-okay.

I grab her hand and begin following her - him, dang it - into a dark, very deserted alley and- there it is again!

Perhaps she - he… it? - felt it too. “Actually, I better depart!”

“Wait!” The person runs away remarkably fast for an old geezer.

I slowly turn, until the log I am carrying makes contact with the narrow walls, stopping me. “Ah, dang it. One second!” I shout to whoever is behind me.

I swear I can feel eyes rolling. “Hurry up. I don’t have all day,” replies a female voice I heard somewhere before, maybe in a festival?

“Be right there!” I lift the material with both hands and begin carefully rotating my body.

“Just drop the stupid wood and pick it back up!” She sounds very frustrated. Geez.

“THIS wood?” I give it a few slaps, “No way! I’d rather me dropping to the floor than-” The words die in my mouth as I finally catch a glimpse of her.

The first thing I see is her big red bow - instantly telling me who this is - tying her straight black hair into a ponytail, probably because of the summer heat, I am shirtless for that same reason after all. My gaze goes lower to her face, all but perfect, like a porcelain doll without being uncanny, as her brown eyes, sometimes red if the light catches them right, stare right at and through me; her unblemished skin, as if she were born yesterday; her nose, perfectly proportionate with the rest; and her thin lips, currently in a frown that somehow looks good on her.

My gaze tries to travel even lower, but I stop it. Remember! The ladies above the neck, like mom taught us!

… maybe I could’ve looked at that old guy’s boobs, now that I’m thinking about it.

Either way, that’s… “The shrine maiden!” I quickly finish turning to face her fully and straightening my posture. Hum, she looks smaller now that I’m seeing her up close.

Reimu looks to the side briefly. “Yeah, that’s me.”

“If I may ask, what are you doing here?” I gesture to the dark alleyway.

“I don’t know,” she answers a bit too fast. “What are YOU doing here?”

“Oh, well, this all started with the blacksmith asking for a new table, - I’m the carpenter’s son by the way - so my dad - he’s the carpenter - sent me to buy-”

“Get to the point. You talk too much.” Bit rude, but surely she’s very busy taking care of the shrine. Her time is very valuable.

“I felt that someone was following me-”

“Really?!” she screams. She clears her throat, “Really?” she says, calmly.

“Yes. And I know I must be right because my very keen sense of danger never fails!” I proudly proclaim.

“Well.” She crosses her arms and looks to the side. “It failed you because no one was following you.”

I raise an eyebrow. “And how would you know that?”

“Uh…” She puts her hands to her hips and stands up with a determined face. “The Hakurei God told me!”

My mouth opens, agape with wonder. “Wow! That’s so cool!”

“I know, I’m pretty awesome.”

“Did he also tell you to come into the alley?”

“Uh, yes! He told me there was something I was looking for.”

“And what is it? What is it?” I feel like a child, pestering her with all these questions. I can’t help it though! Other gods are neat and all, the mountain god did some stuff for the village and her shrine maiden is very nice, but no one has seen the Hakurei God in any way for decades! Plus, my mom keeps telling me stories of how cool he was back when she was my age. I just can’t waste this chance!

“Hum, I was looking for…” she looks everywhere. “My pet! That rat!” She points to a point in the ground.

A very dirty looking rodent lies there. “Cool. What’s its name?”

She thinks for a second. “Nnnnnnnnazrin, yeah, that’s her name!”

“Oh, a pretty…” well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, or something like that, “lady…”

A black cat jumps from the shadow and snatches the rat.

“Nazrin, no!” I scream, but I am unable to do anything to save Nazrin from her cruel fate. As in the end, I am still a boy with a log in an alley.

“It’s okay, that’s my pet too.”

“You feed your pets to each other? Why?”

“The Hakurei God told me to.”

“Ah.” I’m not gonna try to understand divine reasoning, it’s above me. “And what’s its name?”

“That’s Che- no, wait, that’s Rin. Yeah, that’s more fitting.”

A crow comes and begins pecking Rin, forcing her to drop Nazrin, only for the crow to steal her prey.

“That’s Marisa. That thief.”

An… axolotl? Here? Rests there in the middle of the street, the sun beating hard on it. It perishes because it is too lazy to move to the shade. It died as it lived, pathetically.

“That’s, heh heh, that’s Yukari!” Reimu giggles. The most melodious laugh I’ve ever heard.

“What a dumb looking creature that Yukari was, eh?” A part of me feels really bad making fun of an animal who just died. My parents taught me to respect nature, however, Reimu’s laugh has entranced me like a siren’s song. I need to hear more of it.

“Yeah, stupid crone!” She keeps laughing at some joke only she understands, but, as good music makes you dance along with it, I begin laughing at humor I don’t get.

Soon, she also doesn’t understand why she keeps laughing. She just does because she feels like it, because she feels giddy. In an alleyway, Reimu and I laugh for no reason.

I crack my eyes open to witness, perhaps, the most gorgeous sight I’ll ever see. Reimu Hakurei, slightly hunched over, holding her palm to her mouth as she laughs, her cheeks tinted a pink hue and her eyes with very small tears that somehow somehow catch the sun in the exact way to make them look like diamonds.

How? How is she this beautiful? It vexes me, almost scares me. Just how does a girl like this come to existence? It’s like she was handcrafted by the gods and sent down from the heavens to make us joyous we even get to bask in her presence. Every eventuality that may make her anything less than perfect accounted for. May she laugh, frown, cry, she’ll be the fairest of them all.

I’d wager her radiance rivals that of the goddess Amaterasu herself. Maybe that’s why the sun always seems to light her the right way, that’s Amaterasu looking to steal some of her splendor away from her.

But she isn’t a heavenly deity, she is human. She is here…

With me…

Ugh, what am I thinking? I’m just the carpenter’s son.

My silence seems to snap Reimu out of her laughter, and she realizes I’m staring at her like a total creep.

“I, uh,” I find myself tongue-tied. “I’d like to thank you for your service!” I snap a salute with my free hand.

Her joy instantly returns. “You’ll donate?!” Her eyes shine gold with avarice.

“Hum… I meant thank you orally. Like saying the words thank you.”

The frown she appeared with resurfaces. “If thank yous were made of gold I’d be set for life.”

“Uuuh…” I pat my pockets. Empty, of course. Good wood ain’t cheap. Wait… good wood ain’t cheap! “Here!” I rip out a good chunk of the log with my free hand. I’ll have to tell dad it came like this, I doubt he’ll approve of me wasting material on a girl I got no chance with…

She crosses her arm. “Why would I want some dirty wood?” I toss her the piece and she catches it on pure reflex.

“It’s not just any ol’ wood, this is Kōyamaki!”

“I don’t-”

“You see!” She tries interrupting me again, but I continue. Sorry to bother you Miss Reimu, but you must understand the value of that wood! “This sexy little number is gonna get turned into a table for a blacksmith. And I hear blacksmith, so I think, Akamatsu, right?”

“Hum, I guess?”

“I mean, resistant, reliable, everything you want for someone with a heavy job, right? Well, wrong!” I begin moving my shoulders, pretending I’m walking with swagger. “In comes pops, and you know what he tells me?”

“What?”

“Kōyamaki.” I do a surprised expression. “Kōyamaki.”

“Kōyamaki?”

“Kōyamaki!” I laugh in exasperation. “He says, ‘she’s gonna be putting white hot iron in buckets to cool it, it’s gonna be steam city up in there! She’s gonna need something that can handle hot vapor!’” I recount in a crude impression of dad. “I mean, sure, it makes sense. One teeny, tiny issue.”

“What is it?” Reimu leans forward, waiting for the answer.

“Kōyamaki is only one of the Five Sacred Trees! And my father just happens to know a guy who sells them!”

Reimu inspects the chunk in her hand. “Sacred? Really?”

“Yeah, duh, sacred! If I knew it’d be this easy, I’d never have made my life goal to hunt down one of each!”

She looks at me with skepticism. “What do you mean by that?”

I put my hand on my hip and look at the sky at an angle. “The Sacred Trees. The most coveted of all wood in the land. It is said that only the best carpenters may use them. Legends tell that, once upon a time, a skilled carpenter traveled from the very depths of hell to the cusp of the heavens in search of all five, once he managed to get all he combined them into a little box. The box, once completed, closed itself. Inside was the thing he desired most in the world.”

Reimu remains unamused. “So you’re chasing a fairy tale? I really doubt this wood is special in any way.” She looks at her donation once more. “Pretty sure I’ve seen this somewhere else.”

I scratch my cheek. “Well, y’know, you’re probably right. Still wanna get all the Sacred Trees.”

“Why?”

“Why not?” I shrug. “It’s a goal for me to work towards. Keeps me productive and gets me to work more in my passion. So what if it’s useless? It’s better than being in bed all day!” That seems to have an impact on Reimu, she looks slightly stunned. “Anything is possible with hard work, diligence and punctuality-” I look at the sun, now beginning to fall. “Shoot! Gotta go!”

I run past the silent Reimu.

“See ya later Miss Reimu!” I wave as I speed through the roads and away from her.

She stands there, holding the piece of a so-called Sacred Tree. Her cheeks go from pink, to red, to as crimson as her clothes and she covers her face. “What a dumb carpenter’s son.” She whispers very quietly, perhaps embarrassed someone will find her so flustered. “What the hell do I even do with this?”

“My, oh my.” Someone does find her, as a gap opens behind her. “So, naive, kind, not jaded, and most of all passionate. How can a boy like that exist here, eh-?”

“Shut up axolotl.” Reimu finds a use for the Sacred Wood as an improvised shiv.

Maybe more innuendo and less spelling it out would do you some benefit, with the leaf-lady looking at him no need to draw the paralell directly to his dad twice or even once. Just having him stand proud with his wood and shrink under her gaze achieves the same effect after already drawing the comparison with his nose.

Unless the man who put the baby in Sumireko also too her last name, Renko is probably not a direct descendent.
>>
>>47937157
Usami line is hatlineal: if parent from Usami side had a cool hat, the descendant takes up their surname. Those Usami, who don't acquire a cool hat in time, leave the family and assume spouse's surname.
>>
>>47937157
It's more likely than not. They wear similar hats and their names follow the same naming convention.
Beyond that, it would be too anticlimactic if Sumireko, who has magical powers, connections to Gensokyo, the same surname and a similar look to Renko, ended up only being her grand-aunt while neither of her actual grandparents are even implied to exist.

With the leaf lady specifically, it's clunky by design because she speaks weird. But I have noted it and tried to implement some suggestions in this new chapter.
>The rat to axoltot pipeline seems a bit broken, did you accidentally leave out a paragraph?
No. My intention was for the humor to come from how out of place it is. The progression goes from 1, 2, 3, and 7123. But it's a valid point, as indeed, some paragraphs were cut. Mostly filler, the beginning was longer with the carpenter's son encountering various Youkai in disguise and his keen sense of danger flaring up when Reimu stopped them, but I realized that it'd be too much time wasted on filthy Youkai women instead of in nice humans girls,

Today, I carry wood again. This time in a finished state! A huge cabinet of some sorts, made up entirely of a very precious type of material called Jindai Sugi, coming from trees said to be thousands of years old! Suffice to say, even a single log costs a fortune, that’s why they’re usually used in small, ceremonial items. Wonder why you’d make a cabinet out of this?

On the way to my destination, I find myself conversing about the topic with a tiny girl, wearing a khaki flat cap over a head of shoulder-length black hair. Her business card reads “Aya”, but written in an odd way…

“By the way, why do you have such pointy ears?”

“These are my reportage writer’s ears! They help me scout for scoops!”

Weird, but my keen sense of danger isn’t flaring up, so she’s good. That being said, just before she can show me something regarding the quality of the wood, it does flare up.

“Oh, it’s Miss Reimu!” I turn to see Reimu walking towards us with purpose.

“Wow, what’s got her so stormy all of a sudden?” Aya waves at her with a beaming smile. “Good day, shrine maiden.”

The girl in question stops in front of us, looks down and sighs. “You have a knack for getting mixed up with all kinds of shady folk.”

I look appalled at her. “Hey, I’m not shady, I’m honest! I am an honest boy!”

Reimu raises an eyebrow, unamused. “Not you, idiot. Well- yes you, but not the shady one.”

I tilt my head. “Then what do you mean?”

“Hehehe, how adorable.” Aya intrudes into the discussion. “Wait, you must be that boy the rumors talked about, the one who spent the afternoon alone with Reimu in a dark alley!”

I almost drop the cabinet. “Huh?! That’s not what happened!”

“Got anything to say about that, miss shrine maiden? Are you even a maiden anymore?!” She seems to almost float up to Reimu.

Reimu stares at her in the eyes, sporting a very deep frown. “I hope you aren’t trying to bait a reaction out of me. I really don’t care about what your kind gossips about.” She grabs her by the collar, Aya remains composed however. “I better not see one of your so-called ‘articles’ about this come tomorrow, or you’ll be writing the next exclusive with two fingers less.”

At the mention of losing her ability to write properly, her easy smile drops for a matching frown to that of Reimu’s. “Fine. You got it, boss.” She grips Reimu’s wrist and tears her hand off her.

She begins walking away, not before looking at us one final time with the grin she started with. “Have a pleasant day you two, and remember where all the hottest and most factual news is found!” Then, right before my very eyes, she vanishes, leaving behind a dust cloud and a newspaper.

“Geez, she’s a fast one!” I look at the discarded piece of paper. “Can’t pick it up…”

“Can I have it?” Reimu keeps eyeing it with avarice.

“Uh, sure. We already have a reputable newspaper.” The Village Happenings, written by the very respected Master Builder himself. Without him, how would we know that the rumors of Tengu and Tanuki in the village are untrue?

“Sweet!” She kneels to pick it up with a predatory smile. “Free toilet paper.” She shows the improvised bathroom appliance with pride and a glint in her eyes. How thrifty!

As she stands up, I clear my throat to catch her attention. “Do you think what she said is true? About the…” I look to the sides with a slight blush, “rumors?”

Reimu scratches her head, remarkably unbothered. “Eh, probably? I don’t see Aya lying about this. Either way I wouldn’t worry about it.”

“Why?”

“The information flow she uses is quite different to yours. Doubt anyone worthwhile will hear about it.” She chuckles. “Especially now.”

I try to remember that day. “Any idea who could have begun the rumors? I don’t recall anyone seeing us.”

Her demeanor shifts to irritation. “I’ve got an idea of who she might be. Damn gossiping crone.”

“Tell me about it.” All of mom’s older friends spend their days spouting nonsense about other people in the village behind their backs. This one is dating this one, he’s cheating on his wife, the teacher has meet ups with a boy from her class, this one lady is actually a Tanuki in disguise. Ugh, worry about your own stuff!

Reimu’s mood simmers down a bit. “Where are you going?”

“I need to go back to my dad’s shop.”

“Where is it?”

“Right down the road.” I point with my head.

“What a coincidence, I also happen to need to go in the same direction.” She gives a carefree shrug. “We might as well walk together.”

“Ugh, sorry, I can’t. First I need to leave this sexy beast,” I lift up the huge cabinet, “in Mr. Kirisame’s emporium, which is in the complete opposite direction. Rain check?”

Reimu crosses her arms, holding onto her aloof attitude. “That’s funny. I also need to go see Mr. Kirisame.”

“For real?” I ask excitedly. “But why?”

“Hakurei God told me; I need to buy something; gonna tell him Marisa is still a virgin- doesn’t matter why, let’s go.”

“Cool!” I get to walk alongside Reimu! Even if there’s no way she’ll look at someone like me as anything more than just another villager, it’s still a massive opportunity talking to her. Maybe she’ll consider me a friend one of these days!

I feel giddy as we make the short trip to the store. Reimu seems oddly quiet, looking down to the ground. Hm, is she worried about gossip? Thought that wouldn’t bother us. But to be fair, she said it won’t bother ME, she’s probably in every information flow.

I frown a little. Dang it, should’ve rejected her offer to walk together. She probably did it only to be nice. Now she’s gonna have to deal with baseless rumors.

I must be more mindful!

Kirisame's Mega Emporium is one of the biggest buildings in the village, beaten only by the Hieda’s estate. It’s one, or perhaps THE one, center of commerce. Sell or buy, you’re better off doing it through Mr. Kirisame.

“Place gets bigger every time I see it.” Reimu grimaces while scratching the back of her head.

“Well, Mr. Kirisame is very respected around here. Guess he’s gotta show that.” I shrug, slightly annoyed. “I really don’t get it. He doesn’t even know the first thing about carpenting, wouldn’t let him work with Sugi!” I crack up in laughter.

Reimu snickers. “I’m gonna have to take your word for it, crazy woodman. Shall we?”

I try to control my laughs. “One sec. Let’s go.”

Entering the store, we’re welcomed by rows and rows of items, neatly arranged on shelves I remember dad made some years ago, three stories high up to the ceiling. At least 5 clerks stand behind the counter all around the floor, ready to deal with customers looking for a deal.

The man himself is sitting on a chair, scribbling something in some paper. He notices us and stands up. “I’ve been expecting you, boy!” He comes towards us. He’s a very rotund, short man, and the years have not been kind, leaving his once fiery red hair grayed beyond recognition. However, he holds a jolly face and a very well groomed mustache.

“There was a little delay on the way. Hope that’s not a problem.”

“Of course not. And you,” he turns to my companion. “If it isn’t little Reimu! I thought you wouldn’t visit for another couple weeks. Did,” he swallows a blob of saliva, “did something happen to my girl?”

Reimu nervously waves her palms. “No, no! Marisa’s fine. I was just giving company to this guy.”

Mr. Kirisame breathes a sigh of relief, years seemingly lifting from his body. “Thank goodness. That girl will be the death of me.” His jolly face returns. “Well, what are you waiting for, boy? I paid you to bring that to the backroom, come!” Well, technically he only paid to make the furniture, me bringing it is just courtesy, but eh? What’s a little more work? He leads me towards said room, Reimu following in tow. “You man the front.” He orders one of the workers.

“But I’m on break sir…” The poor soul says very quietly. He knows protesting will get him nowhere.

Upon the door opening, I’m assaulted by what I assume is the aftermath of a hurricane.

“I paid for installation,” no he didn’t. “I want it in that corner over there. Make sure to not break anything or you’re paying, these items are very valuable!” He looks away, assuming I’ll just do as told. “Tea, Reimu?”

I look at her for help. She looks back, smug. “Yes, please.” Before leaving me to my task, she waves with an impish grin. “Have fun!”

I sigh and put down the cabinet to begin sorting the garbage.

Reimu enjoys a nice snack in a side room.

“So, Reimu,” Mr. Kirisame begins the conversation.

“Hm, what?” Reimu answers with a mouthful of some very expensive food.

“You say you came because of what exactly?”

She tries to keep her cool. “Just making sure this idiot doesn’t get mugged by some stray Youkai.”

He raises an eyebrow while sipping his tea. “Really now? But you aren’t one to involve yourself with the personal matters of the villagers.”

She closes her eyes in irritation of both the interrogation and the idea of getting involved. “Even if I don’t, it’s still my job. If a villager goes missing or something, then it’ll be more of a pain. Better prevent it.”

“Better to be prepared, eh? Smart girl.” He takes another sip, thinking of his next careful angle. “So you like him?”

Reimu chokes on some tea, her face red from embarrassment and the hot tea in the middle of summer. “I - cough - WHAT? NO!” She slams her cup on the table. “What-? How do you even-? Eh?”

“It’s okay if you do, girl.” Mr. Kirisame leans back in his chair. “You’re of age.”

Tears sting in Reimu’s eyes, she looks at him with fury. “You’re crazy! Him?! Never!”

He hums, enjoying the chance to tease a growing girl. “You kissed him? Hm?” He begins throwing kisses in the air.

“Agh! Stop it! Ew!” She covers her tomato red face.

“Uh, I’m finished sir.” At that moment, I knock on the door.

“Already? You can’t rush a job!” Mr. Kirisame sounds outraged. “Did you do it right?”

“Hum, I think so? You can come and check if you want.”

He stands up and marches to the door. “If a single thing is broken, I’ll get a full refund!”

He finds himself stunned at the sight of all the clutter neatly organized in piles and the cabinet placed exactly where he wanted.

“My boy, it’s excellent! Such efficiency! This shall be the new employee standard!” For some reason, I feel like I’ve doomed some people.

It takes Reimu a few more seconds to compose herself enough to come out. “If you fail at finding the Sacred whatevers, you can be a great maid.” She cockily mocks, trying to regain control.

“Are you sick, Miss Reimu? Your face is all red.” I stare at her face with concern on my own.

Her facade breaks. “J-just the sun. Burns my skin.”

Turns out that when we were talking, Mr. Kirisame had left.

“So,” Reimu asks. “What’s that for? Pretty odd place to put a fancy looking cabinet.”

I shrug. “Beats me. Dad won’t let me work with something like this. Haven’t even opened it.”

A greedy glint appears in Reimu's eyes. “That's for the rich, right? So what if I put all kinds of furniture that looks just like that around the shrine? Maybe it’ll drive up donations from moneybags!”

“Seems pretty costly. The material would make it not worth it, let alone actually making the thing.”

“I’ll just use normal wood and paint it dark brown, I’ll do the carpentry myself. I fix the shrine all the time, how hard can it be?”

Maybe the fact that you gotta fix it all the time is an indication of that…

Mr. Kirisame returns with something wrapped in a blanket.

“What’s that?” Reimu asks.

“You want to see?” Mr. Kirisame waits for the nod. “Well, come.”

While the both of them approach the mysterious cabinet, I stand awkwardly. I think this isn’t a moment for me, maybe I should leave…

Mr. Kirisame sighs. “You too.”

Great, because I’m dying to see inside. Been carrying that thing on my back for hours!

He opens the doors, revealing a very ornate interior, however, its function still eludes me. That is, until he pulls out what was hidden in the blanket.

Some kind of golden locket and a painting of a woman I’ve never seen before.

Reimu seems to catch on as to who that might be. “Is she?”

“Yes.” Mr. Kirisame somberly says. “Yes she is.”

It’s not a cabinet, it’s a shrine to remember those who are no longer here.

He lights up a few candles and puts the mementos in the middle. “It’s been so long…”

Both Reimu and I feel uncomfortable due to this display, her because such raw, honest emotions make her uneasy, and I because, well… I don’t really know Mr. Kirisame.

“So long…” Reimu manages to speak. “And you’re still hurting? What even is the point of loving someone, if when you die, you’ll just leave them alone to suffer.”

He laughs bitterly. “I don’t know girl, I’m no thinker, just a merchant, that’s why both Rinnosuke and Marisa left me behind. The way I see it, the few years we spent together more than paid for the following misery. I don’t regret a thing.“

“Hm.” I find it impossible to tell what is going through Reimu’s mind. Is she even listening? Her gaze is lost.

“Although, there is one thing I’d change.”

“What is it?” She looks back to him.

“All the time I wasted doing useless things. I should’ve spent all my youth with her. I could’ve, but I thought I had time.” He laughs again. “There is always time, until there isn’t. If there is one thing you two can learn from this old man, look for the things you really want while still in your prime. Fight for them, every second you can.”

That lesson leaves us at a loss for words. She looks back to me with an uncertain look. Just what does the Hakurei Shrine Maiden long for? Peace? Donations? What? Nevertheless, she looks at me.

“I know what I really want,” I say, resolute. “You’re right, sir. I’ll fight for what I want, and I’ll start now!”

Reimu looks flabbergasted. “Y-you don’t mean?”

“You know what I mean.” I beam at her.

“I…” she looks down to the floor, a slight pink in her cheeks. “I do…”

I pump my fist in the air and proclaim to the heavens. “I’ll find the Five Sacred Trees, make the little box and become the best carpenter there ever was!”

Mr. Kirisame and Reimu look shocked at my absolute resolution.

“Where can I find someone who knows?” I ask.

He stops to think for a second. “Rinnosuke maybe? He knows about magical wumbo jumbo.”

“The merchant from that shop outside the village, right? Okay!” I begin sprinting out of the store. I’m not gonna waste one more second!

She looks to where I’m heading. “He’s going the wrong way, idiot.”

“I’m sure he’ll get there when he runs into you again and you point him in the right direction.”

“Not gonna happen. He’s on his own.” She crosses her arms and tries really hard to look aloof.

“That’s your fight, good luck.” He laughs and goes back to the front of the store, leaving Reimu alone.

“What a dumb carpenter’s son…”

Yes, Sanae is the purest.
Sakuya was a surprise for me too, but look at her, she's basically holding her dress up. There is, however, a point to be made about Marisa trying harder to be a slut.

That's a good attitude to have when writing 2hu. Sadly, the 'tism bothers me when my gay fanfics couldn't realistically happen in the drunk man's ramblings. The answer was that Marisa's father and mother are both alive. People only talk about the dad, but she does mention having parents. Would've had to redo the entire thing. I've been exposed as a fraud and a filthy secondary...

>>47939385
She's prowling her hunting grounds. As everyone knows, Fairies go for the Oji-sans, Hermits and Oni go for the shotas, beast types go for everything with a penis. However, both the Kitsune and Tanuki prey on middle aged family men, they call it husband-hunting. As the supply for this very specific type is very low, this causes disputes between the two groups.

>>47939399
Reimu can be cheeky when she wants to!

>>47939412
She's still young and focusing on her career, give her a break! Romance comes later! hopefully all the mushrooms didn't mess her up too badly...

Eh, she probably will at some point. Can't be a Touhou fanfic without the mandatory characters and something exploding.

Not being able to work in carpeting is really a bummer, but I guess you can’t always do what you love, lest you’ll get sick of it! Though that’s only partially true, as walking to Kourindou requires traversing some forest, so there is some relation. But these are trees, not logs. Lumberjacks are the ones who deal with the trees. Too barbaric for my taste.

Luckily I still get to do something else I really like, that is, meeting new and interesting people! This girl in particular ran into me while I was lost trying to find the store. And she…

“I don’t get it. Why have boring, regular carpenters? That’s lame. A magical land should use magical wood that molds itself!”

Well, she’s from the outside. I can’t blame her for her upbringing that spawned WRONG opinions.

Sumireko. I’ve seen her from time to time, rarely alone however. She’s always with some pretty big shots, so I kept my distance.

I think back to how I’m beginning to hang out with Reimu often and begin walking with more confidence. Heh, maybe I’m becoming a big shot too. Perhaps I can end the suffering of the most oppressed group of all, persecuted by lesser artisans using equally lesser materials.

As we walk and converse, Sumireko pulls out a strange glowing box and looks at it. “We better pick up the pace. English will end in 40 minutes.”

I look at her and raise an eyebrow. “So you say you come to Gensokyo while sleeping? Then why are you sleeping during class?” I’d never do that in Ms. Keine’s. One kid did that and she headbutted him- now that I think about it… Whatever happened to her? She’s never around town lately, and when she is, she just hangs around in the background not talking with anyone. Maybe she’s depressed because she's not married yet. Mom says that unmarried, old women get really nasty. Poor Ms. Keine…

Sumireko crosses her arms and smirks. “I don’t need to pay attention to school, it’s a waste of time that fills your head with useless knowledge. Why even learn a foreign language when, in a decade or two from now, Japan will be the number one superpower!”

“You really think so?” What can people with the Japan superpower do? Maybe shoot sun beams from their eyes.

“Yep! Just you wait, in the future, Japanese girls will colonize all the boys! The other races can work raising our children.”

What an odd superpower to have…

We speed up and continue on the path to the shop. A Youkai attacks us, so we beat her up. Another happens to be doing something in the path we’re taking, so we beat her up too.

Pretty normal Gensokyo trek.

As we approach Kourindou, Sumireko stretches with a satisfied smile. “I love coming here. I can just attack people and not have some fat, foreign blondie crying to the principal to send me to mandatory counseling again. The geezer said that next time, I’m going to juvie,” she barks a laugh. “Joke’s on them, I’ll just spend all day here!”

I’m concerned about this girl. Hope she doesn’t have children, who knows how they’ll turn out…

Entering Kourindou, Reimu is there, expectedly. She looks at me with a mix of surprise and relief.

Now, I may not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but I can recognize a pattern when I see it. I cross my arms and lean on the doorframe with a smirk. “This is the third time we’ve run into each other by pure chance, you following me? Waited for me to come here?”

“I was at first, but then you never showed up!” She rushes to me, fuming. I flinch, thinking she's gonna hit me, but instead begins looking me up and down, checking for any damage, all while frowning. “Where in the hell were you? We’ve been looking for you for two days!”

“I’ve been lost for two days? That explains why I’m so hungry!”

“Didn’t you notice the days pass?” Sumireko asks, finding the situation hard to believe.

“I was all fired up trying to find this store. Once I put my mind to something, the whole world becomes a blur!”

Reimu finishes her evaluation and stands up, still fuming, her face red with anger. “Idiot! You could’ve run into a stray Youkai!”

I put my palms up to calm her down. “I never wandered too far off, I only ran into small fry.”

She points at the door. “You need to go back to the village!” Geez, she sounds like mom…

Hmm, mother Reimu- stop that brain! I must be really tired if I’m thinking that way!

“I’ll do it, just have to get something real quick-”

A book slams shut. The man behind the counter finally enters the conversation. “A customer?! A real one?!” He stands up and puts on a smile that doesn’t really fit his face. “Welcome to Kourindou, the best curio shop in Gensokyo! Please buy something!”

“Well, I don’t really have any money.”

The man instantly slumps back to his chair. “Of course. Why would you? No one who comes here ever does.” He speaks like a man resigned to his fate. “And why are you here?” He points to Reimu.

“I need to get my clothes fixed.” Reimu shows a big gash in her sleeve.

“And you?”

“For the vibes.”

Rinnosuke sighs. He adjusts his glasses while looking at me. “Are you the village’s carpenter? You look moisturized.”

I stand tall. “His son! Proud carpenter apprentice!”

“Okay then.” It seems that Youkai, especially ones not used to being around many humans, have a hard time distinguishing the finer details that tell age. To them, even dad must be like a baby!

“I’m looking for information about the Five Sacred Trees, sir!” I don’t waste another second.

“This isn’t an information store, but…” He strokes his chin. “Five Sacred Trees? I’m not very familiar,” Reimu interjection of ‘no one is’ goes unnoticed. “Can you name them?”

“Well, there’s the Kōyamaki, the Nezuko, Pea-bearing Cypress-”

“That’s the one.” He snaps his finger. “Knew I heard the term somewhere,” he says while rummaging for something behind the counter. He puts a wooden cup on it.

“Wow!” I rush to see the cup up close. “Where did you find it?”

“I traded for it. The man said the wood was special and wanted a good price, I checked and it was true. Somewhat…” He grabs the cup and inspects it. “It’s only really unique in name only, but it is found outside of Gensokyo, so I kept it.”

“What do you want for it?” I anxiously ask.

“Well, if you have no money, then I’d be willing to give it up for something of equal value. I don’t really care much for this cup.”

I stroke my chin. “And what could that be?”

“Another cup?” Reimu answers.

“Yeah. Pretty sure I’ve seen ones just like it at the convenience store,” Sumireko adds.

I turn to the girls, massaging my eyes in exasperation. It’s not their fault, they don’t know the real value of this. “If I had a cup made of one of the Sacred Trees, why would I ever trade it?” I close my eyes and go back to pondering. “Think, think, where can I find something like that…” I suddenly slam a fist into my open palm. “I got it! The only place I can think of that could have an item comparable to the Pea-bearing cypress is the fanciest house I’ve ever visited.”

Reimu’s sharp intuition already tells her where. “No.”

“Yes!” I point northwest. “The mansion by the lake, that’s where I’ll get it!”

Reimu seethes for a second before rebutting. “No way, the people there are crazy!”

I tilt my head. “Really? They seemed quite pleasant during the parties they threw, especially the head of the house. She was pretty interested in the finer details of carpentry. If you don’t count the time she tried to kill everyone, she’s one of the nicest Youkai I ever met!”

“It does sound a little excessive for just a lame old cup.” Sumireko supports her friend.

“Yeah! Tell him Rinnosuke!”

Rinnosuke, for his part, remains silent, thinking he has a chance to trade something he finds worthless for an item of much higher value.

I shrug. “I’ll be fine. Dad goes there all the time to drop off increasingly more decorated thrones. I can handle myself.”

She plants herself right in front of me and hits me with a very deep frown. However, it’s hard to remember she’s one of the highest authorities in Gensokyo when she has to look so high up to meet my gaze. “I’m coming with you.”

My eyes light up. “Awesome!” I grab her by the hand, utterly shocking her, and begin sprinting towards the lake. “This’ll be fun!”

“Wait! Slow down, dumb carpenter’s son!” Reimu’s scream fades in the distance.

“Looks like it’s just you and me.” Rinnosuke turns to Sumireko, only to see she had already ran out of time and vanished.

He sighs and takes off his glasses. “I like solitude, but it’d be nice if someone came by to actually keep me company once in a while.”

The door opens again. In walks the fearsome Flower Master of the Four Seasons, Yuuka.

“I take it back! Give me my solitude!”

Walking to the mansion slowly, mainly because Reimu doesn’t seem to like sprinting very much. Her stamina recovery is off the charts though! As soon as I stopped running holding her hand, her face went from very red to just a little less red almost instantly

She’s exuding a very dangerous aura as she stomps through the shoreline, pretty much guaranteeing no Youkai will atack. On the one hand, that’s a good thing, this far from the village there ought to be stronger folk, so I’d have to run away. Now on the other hand, I do feel really bad that I made her walk all the way out here in the middle of summer, all to protect me.

I grimace. Better show her I can take care of myself and she doesn’t need to focus on some carpenter’s son.

As we approach the gate, we see the gatekeeper leaning on the wall, reading a book with a colorful cover.

She looks up, sensing intruders, but she eases when she notices I’m with Reimu. Whether it’s because she’s welcome or because she couldn’t stop her even if she tried so no one will be mad at her for slacking on her duty, who knows?

“Oh, it’s Reimu.” She walks up to meet us halfway, positioning herself between the gate and us. “What brings you here? Did something bad happen?”

“It might,” Reimu answers. “Let us through, we need to speak with Remilia.”

“And who’s your friend?” Meiling turns to me. I feel a little intimidated, as I’m not used to people being taller than me, let alone a woman!

“I’m the carpenter’s son, ma’am. I actually came to a few parties.”

She analyzes my face for a second. “Don’t remember you, sorry.” Rude.

“Can we come in, or no?” Reimu begins sounding irritated.

“Uh, the mistress can be very busy. Let me check her schedule.” She pulls out a notebook and reads it. I manage to sneak a peek and notice that it’s filled with nothing but activities like ‘Free Play’, ‘Tea Time’, ‘Chasing Wheelchair Pervert Out of Basement’, ‘Hug Payments’, and such.

“Well.” She closes the book. “I’m sure the mistress will receive you either way.”

Before we move on, I again notice what she was reading. “What’s that?”

She holds it up. “The latest Tengu manga, a brand new series!” Meiling’s face fills with excitement. “Came out just yesterday in the mountain, but the mistress managed to nab a copy for us to read together!”

“Then why are you reading alone?” Reimu raises an eyebrow.

Meiling scratches her cheek. “Hehe… just couldn’t wait. It just looked so interesting, see!” She holds it up to our faces, the cover features a girl with very little defining features being carried by a man with muscles that seemed a little TOO defined. The title reads ‘Arms Like Trunks! I Fell For Some Mob Carpenter?! Vol. 1’.

“Wow! It’s a story about a carpenter! Check it out, Miss Reimu! Miss Reimu?” I look at her and notice her face is tomato red.

No matter how hard Meiling fought, she couldn’t save the manga.

Finding the throne room was easy, we just followed the huge line of Fairies and goblins. Inside, we see Remilia hugging a little green fella.

“Can’t you two not see I’m busy?” She turns to us, annoyed. She lets go of the goblin prematurely. “Salaries will resume tomorrow, you all will get what you’re owed. Now, go back to work.”

Everyone goes somewhere else, except the goblin she was hugging. He looks up to his mistress.

“Sorry Gobby. I can’t give you another full hug, as it’d be improper for the head of the house to play favorites.”

Gobby runs out of the room, wailing. He won’t get over this easily…

Remilia walks back to her throne and gives us a pleasant smile. “What compels you two humans to seek an audience with the devil? Completely unannounced, too.” She speaks with authority.

“I need to find a cool thing.” I point at her. “You seem like the type to have cool things.”

The vampire crosses her hands. “I do indeed. In fact, one of my best artifacts is in my possession right now.” She summons a huge red spear out of thin air. She uses it to reach for a bag that was a little too far for her to reach with just her hands. “This,” she pulls out a strange thing, with three prongs coming out of its sides, “is a hypnosis device from the outside.” She grabs it in the middle and pushes one of its prongs, making them spin.

“That won’t work,” Reimu comments. “Rinnosuke is overflowing with those useless trinkets. The outside folk seem to be getting bored of things too fast these days.”

“Hm, okay, got anything else, ma’am?” I ask the girl who seems to be transfixed in the spinning.

“Remilia?” Reimu asks, getting a little annoyed. “Ugh.” She throws a needle, destroying the alluring artifact.

She effortlessly ignores her blunder and crosses her legs. “How demanding. Sakuya?”

“Yes, Milady?”

“Ah!” I jump from the voice suddenly appearing behind me. I turn, only to find no one.

“Please, take our guests to the room where we keep all our cool things.” An idea enters Remilia’s mind. “And make sure they’re very heavy too.”

I turn again to see who Remilia was talking with. No one, apparently.

“Do you even have something like that?” Reimu seems unfazed.

“Now we do, please follow me.” Remilia stands up and guides us down a corridor I could’ve sworn wasn’t there before. At the end, I see an ornate door with a maid standing beside it. Sakuya, I think. Despite claiming to be a human, she has an uncanny aura to her that always made me keep my distance. But now that I look at her closely, I’m sure she’s telling the truth. No Youkai could be that attractive-

Agh, my keen sense of danger just flared up big time! Better keep my gaze away…

The maid performs an elegant curtsy. “Good morning, guests.” The door is closed one second, then the next it’s open. “Right this way, if you please.”

“Neat!” I begin walking through, when Sakuya appears in front of me.

“Are you no longer surprised?” A very polite smile adorns her as she stands in front of me. She is not as tall as Meiling, but it’s still impressive for a lady to be face to face with me. Now that I think about it, the Fairies were also the tallest ones I’ve ever seen! Seems Remilia only hires tall people, wonder why?

“Not really. I assume that’s your ability.” Miss Akyuu wrote about it. “Got used to it by now.”

She disappears once again and shows up back in her spot, this time covering her mouth with one hand and laughing very elegantly. “How easily you people born in Gensokyo get accustomed to the unusual, eh?”

“Sakuya, what did I say about teasing my guests?” Remilia chastises with a smile and not really any edge to her words. “It is improper for a noble to make her guests feel uncomfortable.”

“I apologize Milady, he just looked so clueless!”

I take offense to that. Reimu too by how mad she looks.

Remilia finally guides us inside the newly made treasury. Various charms, weapons, armor, and a seriously huge amount of gold litters the floor. Reimu almost faints at the sight of it all.

However, the weirdest thing is a girl, sitting atop an out of place chair and focusing heavily on a book. “Pache?” Remilia calls out.

Pache looks up from her books and her eyes widen. “Where am I?”

“The mistress’ orders were to bring anything cool and heavy,” Sakuya explains with a kind smile. “Now, what Lady Patchouli lacks in coolness, she more than makes up in heaviness, fiu.” She wipes some sweat off her brow.

The librarian looks flabbergasted at the statement, while Reimu and Remi share a laugh. Now, that’s kinda rude, one shouldn’t make mention of a lady’s weight! Hope I don’t have to carry her all the way to Kourindou, though…

“Marvelous work as per usual, Sakuya.” Remilia grandly gestures to all her treasure. “Young man, this is a test of your might. You may choose any one item and it is yours, that is, if you can carry it all the way to the village-”

“Actually, it’s going to Kourindou.”

“To Kourindou.” Remilia continues as if nothing happened. “So, which do you choose?”

“Can I pick anything?”

“Anything at all.”

“Including the girl?”

“No you can’t,” Pache sharply refutes.

“No he can’t!” Reimu even more sharply refutes.

Remi shrugs. “If you can carry her.”

“Impossible,” I concluded without a second thought. The girl in question doesn’t look happy. “What is the single most valuable item?” I have to match the cup!

“Ah,” Remi looks at a hammer, currently breaking through the floor. “Mjolnir, the weapon of a powerful and violent god. Be warned, no mere mortal could ever hope to budge it!”

“Cool, that’s the one!”

“Let’s take it outside then!”

“Remi wait,” Pache stands up and walks to Remi. “Are you really going to give away such an important artifact on a stupid game?”

“Yes.”

“Sounds fun. Let's do it.”

A huge crowd has formed right outside the gate, composed of the members of the mansion, Reimu, me, and some random Youkai that wandered in.

“Who’s gonna bring the dumb hammer?” Reimu asks.

“I had Meiling, Flan, and Pache do it.”

“T-those three?” I nervously look around to all the people watching. “Just how heavy it actually is?” It just occurred to me that I may not be able to carry it on my own. I don’t wanna embarrass myself in front of everyone.

Remi puts her hands on her hips. “Don’t worry. I just went overboard to make sure no one strains themselves too much. Even just one should be able to bring it with enough effort.”

“Faster!”

“You’re doing it wrong. You’re too slow.”

I turn to see Pache and Remi’s sister, Flandre, giving helpful advice to Meiling, who was left alone to very painfully bring Mjolnir.

“If I keep going, I’ll drag this thing through the flowers!”

“The gardener will fix it, just do it.”

“I am the gardener, young mistress!”

“Even better, now we won’t have to fetch her!”

Meiling silently cries as she is forced to kill her flowers. “My camellias…”

Eventually, she reaches the assigned position, and then plops herself down in the shade to nurse her arms.

Remi walks up to the weapon. “Behold! Molnir!”

“Mjolnir,” Pache corrects. “She said it correctly before…”

“Mjolnir! Son of the Carpenter, are you prepared?”

“I guess…”

“Then come and carry with all your strength, or suffer the humiliation!”

I hesitantly walk to Mjolnir and begin inspecting it. “Why is the handle so short? Isn’t it supposed to be a warhammer?”

“It wasn’t made correctly,” Pache explains.

“Cool…” Enough stalling. I begin trying to lift it with everything I got. Then I try dragging it. Then I try pushing, and putting all my carpenter strength into it, I’m able to tip it over just enough for it to fall on its own. “This’ll take a while, but I think I can-”

“Also it has to be on one trip with no break.” Remi adds.

The hammer returns to its original position. “What? Why?”

“It’d be boring to watch you very slowly turn Mjolnir all the way to Kourindou.” The crowd all make sounds of agreement.

“Can’t argue with that…” I begin thinking again. But I’m not very good at it…

“Hey.” I feel Reimu’s hand grabbing my forearm. “Want me to do it?” The crowd boos. “Shut up!”

“Can you do it?”

She shrugs. “Probably. Look,” she has a very understanding face, “you’re a good guy, I can tell you don’t wanna do anything bad with this dream of yours. How about you let me do my job and you’ll do yours, eh?”

My job? Oh yeah, carpenter. Just the carpenter who asks her to go look for dangerous things. Just another villager to bring her problems… “No.”

“What?”

“I said I’d prove myself to you!” I rip my arm from her grip. As she remains stunned I think harder than I ever thought before! I can only tip Mjolnir, how in the world am I gonna make it reach Rinnosuke all on my own. Wait…

I think back to something Pache said. “Got it! Be right back!” I sprint to the village as fast as I can.

I return carrying all my tools and a frankly disgusting amount of something equally disgusting, bamboo. I needed something light and flexible. I apologize to my ancestors…

I drop everything on the ground and begin sketching a design.

“What is this all for?” Reimu looks in awe at the sheer number of bamboo trees I managed to get in such a short amount of time.

“To finish the handle.” I focus on my work, doing the dimensions.

Pache glances at my paper. “That math seems correct. I’m impressed, villager.”

“It’s not math. It’s carpentry.”

“Really? I’ve got a carpentry question then.”

“Shoot.”

“Let’s say I’ve got a piece of wood 37 centimeters long and I wanna cut it into 8 smaller but equal pieces, how long would they be?”

“4,625 centimeters.” I answer without looking up.

She looks pleasantly surprised. “Correct. Now, what if I have to combine the length of all sides from two square panels, and then I cut it by the multiplied lengths of a single side from the first and one from the second, with 1 centimeter added on top. Can I know for certain that the result will also be a square?”

I stop to think for a few seconds. “Yes.”

She nods. “Exactly. One last question, what’s 9 plus 10?”

“Oh gee… I’m terrible at math, 21?”

She sighs. “No, no it’s not.” She walks back to the crowd.

I put the finishing touches in my plan. “This ought to work.” I finally stand up and stretch in preparation for some hard labor.

“What’s the plan? Gonna build a catapult or something?” Reimu asks.

“Nah, for that I’d have to get something equally heavy and somehow suspend it in the air. I could barely manage to make Mjolnir tip over.”

“So?”

“So I’ll make it tip over and reach Kourindou!” I begin constructing faster than I ever did before. Soon enough, the handle of the weapon was extended up to the sky. Without my noticing, the sun had begun to set and most of the Youkai got bored and left.

“Done!” I proudly exclaim, grabbing the attention of everyone who’s still here. I notice that it appears like Reimu never stopped looking.

“Finally!” Remi snaps closed a manga, one that didn’t throw Reimu into a wild rage, she was reading with her gatekeeper. “This had better be worth it.”

“You’ve got some skills, carpenter’s son!” Sakuya praises. “Would you become the official SDM carpenter?”

“If all his buildings look like they’d collapse from a stiff breeze, I vote he doesn’t.” Pache looks at the precariously balancing thin tower of bamboo.

“It looks so boring, all green like that!” Flandre adds. “Couldn’t you have put some more color?”

“So…” Reimu looks up, finding the top hard to spot. “You sure this will work?”

“Nope.”

“And if it doesn’t?”

“Then I try something else.”

Reimu doesn’t respond, leaving me to make the final push. I stretch my arms, feeling the exhaustion of these past few days all rush at once.

However, I push and I pray.

“Ouch!” Can be faintly heard in the distance.

Mjolnir has reached its destination. In a way.

“You did it!” Reimu begins giggling and jumping on the spot while clapping. “Can’t believe it actually worked.”

I ignore how everything hurts and stand tall. “Of course it did! I am a proud novice carpenter!”

“With that display, I reckon you might be a bit better than that.” Pache studies my plans, finding them quite interesting to look at.

“You’re right. Now I’m a halfway decent carpenter!”

“Eh, sure whatever.” She discards the paper and goes back to her library.

“Lame.” Flan makes her own exit.

Meiling had fallen asleep while reading, something Remilia didn’t notice.

The little devil, however, claps. “Outstanding ingenuity! A much more fun conclusion than just carrying it. The hammer is yours, son of the carpenter.”

“Sweet! Now I just gotta figure out a way to actually get it to the shop.”

“Don’t worry, as a sign of hospitality, I’ll do it.” Remi walks up to the hammer and tries to lift it. “As a sign of hospitality, Sakuya will do it.”

“I can get some shopping done on the way.” Sakuya appears with a cute cloth handbag with a cartoon bat stitched on the front. She cuts the bamboo handle, picks up Mjolnir and puts it in her bag. “Reimu, carpenter’s son, shall we? It’s getting dark already, and the shopkeeper doesn’t like it when I show up during the night for some reason.”

Reimu and I look at each other and shrug.

Sakuya has joined the party(temporarily).

Walking in the middle of the forest at nightfall would be almost a death sentence for a villager like me. Walking with the Hakurei shrine maiden and the devil’s head maid would be a death sentence for anyone but me.

“Would you care to explain just how in the hell you did that?” Reimu asks our new companion.

“Did what?”

“That.” She points to her bag.

“I’m glad you asked! With a needle and some colored threads! The puppeteer helped me in exchange for a book about curses,” Sakuya happily explains. “Also, I think she has been trying to curse you.”

“Who? I don’t know any Alice.”

“Short blonde hair, we met her during the spring stealing incident, not Ran. She holds a real grudge towards you.”

“Damn, didn’t know Lunasa felt that way- wait, I’m not talking about that! I mean Mjolnir!”

“Oh! The mistress found it in a bar.”

“No! How did you lift it?!”

Sakuya looks at her confused. “With my hands? How else do you lift something?”

“I think she means,” I interject, “how did you manage to pick it up when no one else could?”

Sakuya softly hits her forehead. “Now I understand. Why didn’t you say so in the beginning? You should really learn how to speak better, Reimu.” The girl in question grumbles. “It’s simple, Milady made a request of me and I, as a proper maid, fulfilled it perfectly and elegantly,” she says with poise. “I take pride in my work, wouldn’t you agree, carpenter’s son?”

“Makes sense to me!”

“Whatever.” Reimu gives up. Sakuya is an impossible enigma.

“And you know why it hurts?”

Rinnosuke doesn’t respond, too distracted by the painful hump growing atop his head.

“Because you’re so weak!” Yuuka insults his strength. As she has done from the moment she walked into the store. She does that when she’s bored sometimes.

“What a headache…”

“Shopkeeper!” The door flies open, almost certainly breaking it in the process. Oops.

“Great, it gets worse.”

“I’ve come to collect Sacred Pea-bearing Cypress!”

“The what? Oh, yeah, the stupid cup.” He grabs it from under the counter. “What do you have to trade?”

“This! Miss Sakuya?” She comes out from behind me with a pleasant smile, upturning her bag and dumping the hammer, utterly destroying the floor.

“What-? Why did you do that?!”

“Did you want me to put it on a table and break it? Good grief.” She carelessly shrugs.

“That is the mighty hammer Molnir!”

“Mjolnir.”

“Thanks Reimu. Mjolnir, only the most mighty may carry it!” That catches Yuuka’s interest. “I know this doesn’t compare to the Sacred cup, but it’s the closest I could find in these lands…”

“Ugh, you spent way too much time with Remilia.” Reimu shivers.

“It was only a day.”

“That’s too much for ANYONE to spend with her, you weird maid.”

Sakuya puffs up her cheeks, crosses her arms, and looks to the side. Cute-

Sense of danger!

“Did you say Mjolnir?” He walks up and kneels to inspect the weapon. “Hm, yes. This is the legendary hammer of Thor. I’m not surprised Remilia possesses this specific item.”

“Why is that?” Reimu asks.

“She also has a spear called Gungnir and a sword named Lævateinn, does she not?”

“Yes, indeed,” Sakuya answers.

“These three are weapons from Scandinavian legends. I read about them from a book that was a collection of various myths. It recently came with some others, like one about a girl being hunted by people with buttons for eyes. All from the same author, wonder what happened to him that made his work end up forgotten?” He stands up. “This is indeed an item of immense value. Now I just need to figure out a way to move it…”

“Heh.” Yuuka perks up. “A pathetic excuse for a Youkai such as yourself could never hope to even budge it.” She shoves him aside. “Only the most mighty, eh? I shall do it with one hand!” She grips the handle and tries to lift it. “O-only with…” She tries a few more times, before attempting with both hands. “Come on, piece of…” She tries and tries, eventually screaming in effort and frustration as her attempts turn fruitless.

Reimu and Sakuya snicker as she fails to move it. “A nice showing from the Master of Four Seasons, I must say!” Sakuya mocks.

“Watch your mouth, mutt!” Yuuka takes a break from failing to sneer at Sakuya. “I am one of the strongest in the land!”

“Yeah, like 10 years ago,” Reimu retorts without an ounce of fear. “Stronger folk just keep popping up.”

“The first time we met, I also had to fight a Shinigami and the Yama, those were scarier than you.”

“The first time WE met I was 11, and I beat you twice.”

“I wasn’t taking it seriously!”

“This happened before the Spell Cards rules, right?” Sakuya asks. “Then your incident must not have been that big of a deal. I mean, the mistress forced the rules into existence with hers!”

“I-!”

“And also,” Reimu continues the attack, “Tenshi can definitely beat you.”

“Her-?!”

“And the young mistress.”

“And the moon people.”

“And that delicious looking inchling, if she used her mallet.”

“And the weird t-shirt goddess. Hey, if you’re so strong, why don’t you go to hell? That’s where all the strong, fight-hungry ones hang around?”

“Because…”

“I can also defeat you.”

“You-!”

“Me too. I did when I was a child.”

Yuuka, the Youkai Master of power creep, looks down in silence.

“Waaaaaah!” Yuuka, the Youkai Master of Moe, begins crying. “It’s not fair! I used to be a big deal! Back in Makai, when Alice wasn’t a total failure! Now I don’t get to do anything anymore!” She kicks Mjolnir and hurts her foot.

We four watch as she falls to the floor and crawls into the fetal position.

“Now I feel bad, and I didn’t say anything. You smell real nice Lady, cheer up!” It’s true, I’d have never guessed she was a Youkai. She seems so nice.

“Well, guess that’s what happens when your one character trait gets outshined.” Sakuya shakes her head with a ‘what can you do’ expression.

“I hope she stops soon, she might scare away clients…” Rinnosuke says.

“…” Reimu remains silent for a few seconds. “Alice? I thought your friend’s name was Elly? Who the hell is Alice?”

I keep spying at the cup, tantalizingly standing on the counter. “Hum, sir? Can I?”

“Oh? Sure, go right ahead. The cup’s all yours.”

“Sweet!” I run to grab my prize and hold it up in the air. “Pea-bearing Cypress get! Four more to go!”

Reimu smirks. “Where to next, woodman?”

I blink in surprise at her. “Hum? I’ve proved I can handle myself, you don’t need to babysit me anymore, don’t worry!”

“Eh? No.” She frowns. As usual.

“No-?”

“I said no! I…” She looks down and whispers. “I want to…”

I lean close. “Can you speak up?”

“I want to… see all the trees!” She looks up, her face red like a tomato. “I mean, you’ve already wasted my time so much, I gotta see it through!”

My mouth opens wide in surprise. “Are you saying… you’re interested in the Sacred Trees?”

“… yes?”

I hug her tightly in excitement. “Oh, this is gonna be so much fun!” Reimu remains very still during the hug and after as well, almost frozen. “Where should we go look?”

“What about the bamboo forest?” Sakuya suggests. “The princess there has some Sacred Treasure, maybe she knows something about the trees.”

Reimu clears her throat to regain her composure. “Could work. Probably worth exploring.”

They must be referring to the clinic. I went there on occasions, but never liked it. The doctor creeped me out and the bunny called me a short-ear under her breath. But if a lead could be there, then… “Let’s go!”

“Wait!” As we begin to depart, Sakuya stops us. “I’m going with you!”

“Don’t you have duties to return to?” Reimu asks with a voice that’s a tad too sharp.

“The mistress was awake all day today, surely she’s asleep by now. And the way the carpenter's son talks about the trees made me very curious!”

“Oh, well! Can’t say no to a fellow person passionate about their profession, welcome aboard!” For some reason, my keen sense of danger is flaring up slightly…

“Do I get a hug too?”

“Of course! Come-” My blood runs ice cold, the hairs at the back of my neck stand up. “Actually, maybe not…”

“That’s for the best~” Sakuya smiles cheekily. What is she hiding? “I’m glad you two welcomed me, let’s work well together!”

Sakuya has joined the party(permanently!).

As we walk to our next destination, Rinnosuke remains with Yuuka.

“Hey, it’s… okay. There’s more to life than being strong. There’s, uh, book collecting, pondering, uh, you like gardening, right-?” She grabs him by the neck.

“You’re now my husband.”

“E-eh?!”

“If I’m seen alongside someone as weak as you all time, I’ll look strong in comparison!” A manic smile adorns her face.

“B-but, we barely know each other and-”

“Then let’s get to know each other!” She throws him to the floor. “Reeeeeeeaaaaal well, haha!”

To this day, some people can still hear the pained moans…

A beautiful full moon hangs above us as we make our way to the Bamboo Forest of the Lost. I look up in awe. “Wow! How pretty! I’ve never seen the moon this big before.”

Reimu grumbles. “I’ve got a bad feeling about this. Nothing good ever happens on a full moon.”

Sakuya happily sighs. “I love the full moon. Makes me nostalgic.”

“You’re really starting to piss me off with those vague hints to a complex past you never elaborate on.” Reimu glares at her.

“Oh? Would you like to know about my story?”

“Yeah?”

“What would you like to know exactly?”

Reimu looks at me in shock. She doesn’t know what to ask, so I take the lead, “Where were you born?”

“To answer that, first we need to talk about parallel universes-” Sakuya is interrupted by a dark ball of fuzzy hair sprinting by us while crying.

“I can’t let anyone see me like this!” she wails and sprints far away.

“That girl… she seems familiar.” Reimu scratches her head with the tip of her Gohei.

“It’s that werewolf we found during the miracle mallet incident a while back. Though it looks like she has gotten lazy with personal hygiene as of late.” Sakuya giggles.

It’s really uncomfortable when people begin reminiscing about events I wasn’t there for…

“But why is she out of the forest?” The answer to Reimu’s question becomes clear as we approach the place.

“You can’t kick me out of my own damn house, you moon whore!” Tewi, the leader of the rabbits, screams at a thick mass of bamboo. “Lift this spell right now or you’ll regret it!”

Alongside her we see dozens of fellow bunnies, plus various animals and insects all hanging out right at the edge of the forest.

Reimu frowns. “What’s happening now…”

“Oh my.” Sakuya covers her mouth with the tip of her palm. “Looks like a real zoo, how did they get all these creatures out here?”

“What’s a zoo?” I ask the pertinent question here.

“Heya guys!” We hear a voice coming up from above. We look up to see Marisa floating down atop her broom. “Any idea what’s going on out here?”

A bit of Reimu’s annoyance vanishes at the sight of her long time friend. Only a little. “We just got here, what about you?”

“Wanted to have this weird mole checked out, see.” She lowers the neck of her shirt and shows a pretty big black spot that does look a bit odd. “Started botherin’ me real bad last night, couldn’t sleep a wink! So I came here but no matter how hard I try, I can never get to Eirin’s! Tried flyin’ in from above, but nothin’.”

“That’s strange,” Sakuya comments. “All of us know the way to Eintei by heart by now.”

I whisper self-consciously. “I always get lost.”

“Whatcu say, big guy?” Marisa hops down from her broom and walks up to me. If I didn’t know any better, I’d think she was a fairy! “Wow, how’s the weather up there?”

I think for a second. “Pretty nice.”

She barks a laugh and extends a diminutive hand. “Name’s Marisa Kirisame, watchu called?”

“We never asked for his name,” Sakuya points out, amused.

“It’s-”

“I’ll burn this place down in five seconds if you don’t come out!” Tewi kicks a trunk. “I know you can hear me!”

“Ugh!” Reimu flies up and to her to run interference, Sakuya follows soon after.

“Uuuh…”

“Can’t fly? Or can’t remember? Happens all the time, hehe.” Marisa scratches her cheek nervously.

“The former…” How DOES one learn to fly? It’d be helpful to carry logs great distances!

“Well,” Marisa presents her floating broom. “Hop in!”

“Don’t you need it?”

“Nah, I can manage well on my own. But witches need flyin’ brooms!”

“Can’t argue with that!” I excitedly jump at the chance of soaring through the air, even for a little while.

The novelty wears off quickly as I realize that maybe I shouldn’t have tried to use it the same way Marisa does and should, instead, fly sitting sideways. Ouch.

We land near the threatening rabbit, but it proves unnecessary as her words appear to work.

“Inaba.” The mere sight of her runs my blood cold as she walks out of the thick forest. Standing even taller than Sakuya, she looks down on us earthlings like worms. There’s no one in Gensokyo I fear more than the genius pharmacist, Eirin.

Because I really, really hate needles…

“Yagakoro.” The small Tewi squares up without an ounce of doubt. “You’re making a big mistake, huge!”

“I just need you to vacate the premises for one night.”

“MY premises! Which I let YOU live in! You don’t kick me out, I kick you out! You son of a bi-!” Tewi gets interrupted by Eirin holding a bag full of coins. “Well hi there.”

Reimu salivates at the bag.

“Ya can’t burn down the forest.”

“I know. Just let me dream for a second…”

“This should make things even, right?” Eirin smiles, with an air of smugness to her.

“Yup, thanks a lot, hehe!” As she snatches the bag and begins counting the money, Tewi adopts a more playful demeanor. “Just gonna have to get our hammers real quick-”

“No!” A rare instance of Eirin losing her composure occurs, before clearing her throat. “I’m afraid you can’t pound mochi for the night.”

Tewi, smiles. She’s not gonna let that slide. “I don’t know, master. The guys and gals get reeeaaal antsy when we don’t pound, on a full moon of all nights!” She puts her hands on her chest and adopts a helpless expression. “I’d never go against your wishes, and I’ll do my best to make sure others do as well, but I can’t control everyone!” She smirks. “And hammers are so easy to find these days~”

Eirin doesn’ respond, choosing to stare her down in attempt to intimidate her. After a short battle of wills, she sighs and hands her a second bag of money.

“Maybe…”

“You can’t, Miss Reimu! You’re the good guy!”

“I know… I know…”

Tewi tips her nonexistent hat. “Much obliged, master.” She whistles loudly and all the rabbits follow her away.

Eirin begins walking back into the forest, but Marisa flies in front of her. “Wait just a sec!”

She stops, purely out of courtesy. “We’re closed, come back tomorrow.”

“Oh, that solves things!” I happily state, glad I can use tonight to rest and continue my hunt come morning. “How about we head back?”

Reimu grimaces. “I still wanna know what’s going on. Those moon people are really shady.”

“Yes. They live on the dark side of the moon.” Everyone ignores Sakuya.

Eirin tries to step around, but Marisa keeps stopping her. “Can’t do that, got this crazy mole that doesn’t let me sleep! Just gimme somethin’ real quick and I’m gone!”

Eirin looks up to the heavens while taking a deep breath. “You earthlings are so lucky I can’t afford to have anyone dying this close.”

“Then ya better check, I might drop dead right now!”

The doctor thinks for a second. “Very well. Show me this mole.”

“Right here!” She pulls down the neck of her dress and Eirin proceeds to examine it. “Appeared around two weeks ago.”

“Hm.”

“Didn’t pay it any mind at first, but then the little bugger started itchin’.”

“Yes, that makes sense.”

“And then last night it REALLY started botherin’, so I-”

“Cancer, terminal. You’ve got a couple of hours to live. Don’t worry.”

“Wh-? Don’t worry? So you can cure it!”

“Yes, I can cure it. Don’t worry, as in, you can’t get me to do it no matter what, so don't even try.” Eirin takes advantage of Marisa, who’s still processing the news, to slip past. “Get your affairs in order.”

We four stand in silence.

“Hm, I don’t think you’ll make for a good steak, but I bet ramen with Marisa stock would be delicious for the young mistress!” Sakuya breaks it with a cheery statement.

Guess we can’t wait until tomorrow after all…

>“Yes. They live on the dark side of the moon.”
That's a very canon Sakuya thing to say. Her sense of humor is... spacial.

Not in a bad way though, she definitely the funniest 2hu from all the canon stuff I have read

>I think the only time when Sakuya's backstory is brought up is in an ancient ZUN comment in IN.
It was in Eirin's profile in IN. It said that she was surprised to see the 'kuya, but only she knows why.
Funny you should mention both Tewi's past and Sakuya's lack of one. The former was kinda vaguely alluded to last chapter and will play a larger role. Still pretty small.
The latter is exactly my Sakuya's past headcanon, - because everyone has one - I like to think that Sakuya is kind of an anomaly in time, that's why she's so mysterious all the time, as her past is forever changing. One day she'll be a Lunarian, the next a vampire hunter, the next an orphan. She would hint towards different things, often contradicting each other. This plays into the reason she's so loyal to Remilia, as with her ability she gave her a concrete future, so to speak, and she's grateful to no longer be drifting through time.
I'm telling you this because this was originally all gonna be in the fic, but it went way beyond the scope. The line of parallel worlds is kind of an allusion to it and a reference.
Sorry Sakuya, but this is a Reimu story. Your time to shine will come!

Meido humor is the best. I don't think I'd be as invested in writing this story every day if it weren't for the 'kuya.

“I can’t freakin’ die yet!” Marisa freaks out. “I still haven’t gotten around to dealin’ with my bad karma! The Yama will send me straight to hell! I need to return all the books! I need to apologize to a lot of people! I need to finally kill my father!”

“Marisa, calm down!” Reimu shakes her by the shoulders.

“But imma die Reimu! Imma kick the bucket!”

“Actually, wouldn’t it be best if she did do all that stuff?” Sakuya comments.

“You are not dying! I won’t allow it!”

“Stop shakin’ me! You are drainin’ my life force! I’ll have to skip apologizin’ to Alice!”

“WHO THE HELL IS ALICE!”

“Miss Patchouli sure would appreciate having those books back.”

“SHUT UP SAKUYA!” They both shout at once.

Sakuya puffs up her cheeks and crosses her arms. “I was just trying to look at the bright side. Now I won’t help.”

I feel like I should do something… what is father’s advice for dealing with hysterical women? Run away. Can’t do that. “Hum, gals?” Two pair of eyes, one furious and the other one terrified, glare at me. “How about we all just relax for one second?” I look to Sakuya for support, but see her still offended.

“Ya don’t get it man, I wasn’t plannin’ on going out ‘till at least 25! This ruins my life calendar!”

“Oh no, you aren’t dying before me! I’m NOT mourning you. You’ll live up to a 128 and you’ll like it!”

“What am I supposed to do for a hundred years if I’m not allowed to go full Youkai?”

“I don’t know!”

Why are they arguing? They both want the same thing. “Then we should cure her.”

“Yeah, we should! Let’s get to Eintei!”

“Yup, we goin’!” Reimu lets go of Marisa, and the witch fixes her clothes.

“So, we need to find a way around the spell,” Reimu says.

“I reckon first we need to figure out what the heck kinda magic we dealin’ with.” Marisa strokes her chin.

Uh? They’re calm all of a sudden? “Are you two okay?”

They look at me with incredulity. Marisa says, “Uh, yeah, why?”

“Well, you were freaking out about the whole… death thing just a second ago.”

Reimu shrugs. “We got used to it.”

“Yup. This kinda thing is nothin’ for us incident solvers.” Marisa winks. “You’ll figure it out, village dude.”

Figure out what? Being on death’s door? I must look like how outsiders look to me, clueless. “So what’s the first step?”

“Rush right in and see what we find!” Marisa grabs her broom and flies into the forest at amazing speeds! About ten seconds later she flies back out. “Same as before… no matter where I turn, I always return here.”

Reimu taps her chin with her Gohei. “Maybe an illusion. Could be a fake forest.”

“Then we should explore carefully.” I begin walking into the forest, but Reimu puts her weapon in front of me to stop me.

“I can’t let you go in. It’s too dangerous, I mean it,” she speaks in a tone I’ve never heard before. This must be her ‘Youkai Exterminator’ voice. “Who knows what Eirin is planning.”

“I…” So I still haven’t proven myself enough for her? Dang, that must be why she wants to come with me so much.

“Come on, Reimu!” Marisa grabs the stick and pushes it aside. “It’s my life we’re talkin’ about here! I want all the help I can get!”

“He has proven himself capable before.” Sakuya breaks her vow of silence.

“Besides, he’s from the village! No one will dare kill him, they’ll just rough him up and scare ‘im a bit!”

“Wait, is that true?”

“No.” Reimu turns to me sharply, before returning to Marisa just as quickly. “I just… don’t want him to get hurt, that’s all.”

Marisa tilts her head. “Why?”

“I just don’t, okay! Am I not allowed to care?!” Reimu explodes and turns back to me. “You wanna come, fine! Be my guest!” She gives me a rude invitation before stomping her way into the forest.

Oh boy, I did something wrong. Have no idea what, but that doesn’t really matter. Dad would hide away in a bar when mom got like that, but I’m not gonna do that! The problems must be dealt with face on with no fear! I must prove myself even more! I sprint inside.

Marisa and Sakuya stay behind for a second. The witch says, “What’s crawled up her butt this time?”

“The perfect illusion she had is showing cracks when exposed to the harsh world. Her fantasy is crumbling and giving away to realities she’s too stubborn to accept.”

“… what the heck? What kinda answer is that?”

“That, or the problem lies not in what’s crawled up her behind, but what hasn’t, fufu~”

“Can'tcha say a single thing that makes freakin’ sense?”

Sakuya begins walking into the forest with great poise, while still giggling.

“Hey, don’t leave me behind! I’m the one dyin’ here!”

As far as the eye can see, only bamboo can be found. “It’s grown thicker somehow.” So much so that to walk we have to push it aside. “Wasn’t like that when I came before for the materials.”

“Taller too!” Marisa looks up. “Couldn’t see a darn thing!”

“What’s the plan?” Reimu sharply says.

“I got it!” I don’t really got it. But this is my chance to redeem myself in the eyes of Reimu. All eyes turn to me. Okay, think! “So, no matter where we go, we’ll always end up back in the beginning, right? But the scary lady can walk all the way to the clinic.”

“It wouldn’t make sense otherwise,” Reimu says.

“So, there MUST be a correct way back!”

Reimu rolls her eyes. “Or she’s using magic. I can try working around it-”

“No!” I must prove myself!

Reimu turns to me, even angrier. “Just stand aside for once.”

“I can figure out a way! Don’t you worry, Miss Reimu!” I proudly point at myself.

She looks like she’s about to say something, but sighs. “Whatever. Go ahead.”

Okay! Now what? I better think quickly. “Hm, how about we take some of these bamboo and lay it in the ground, and as we go we attach a new piece. That way we can never end up getting turned around.”

“That sounds suspiciously similar to your plan for Mjolnir,” Sakuya comments. True… but if it ain’t broken!

“I’ll just need some of these-” I try to unearth a bamboo trunk, as I’ve done just this morning. “Hum, kinda hard.”

“Are you sure you can do this?” Reimu sounds irritated.

“Yes!” I step back. “Looks like I’ll have to use my secret weapon, the [Unleashed Master Chop(unmastered)]!” I line up the bamboo with my palm sideways.

Sakuya gasps. “And what can the [Unleashed Master Chop(unmastered)] do?”

“It can cut even the terrible Saigyou Ayakashi!”

“I’d like to see that.” Marisa smirks while crossing her arms.

“Whatever.” Don’t worry, Miss Reimu. You’ll surely be impressed!

“HI-YAH!!!” I chop with all my might and something breaks!

“… the bamboo barely moved,” Marisa points out.

I swallow a wad of saliva and remain with my back turned. “It seems… there is something my [Unleashed Master Chop(unmastered)] can’t chop.”

“So it’s [Unleashed Master Chop(leashed)(unmastered)(chopless)], then.” Sakuya giggles at her own joke.

“Also.” I finally turn and show my hand, bent at an odd angle. “I need to see Miss Eirin…”

“Ouch, that’s gonna leave a mark!” Marisa jokes around. “First wound, buddy! Don’t sweat it, it happens to all of us.”

“Not me.”

“I know for a fact that’s not true, Sakuya.”

The girls’ discussion goes unheard by me. I’m too busy focusing on Reimu’s expression. When I showed my broken hand, in a few seconds she went from surprise, to concern and settled in quiet, simmering anger. I’m prepared for her to scold me.

What I’m not prepared for is the silence. “I think I know what the spell is.” And her ignoring me.

“Imagine how cool it’d be to have another solver who chops- eh? You do?”

“The princess must be using her ability to make the bamboo forest eternal.”

“So that’s why he couldn’t cut the bamboo! How do we deal with it then?”

“I believe I can,” Sakuya perks up. “I can get us to a specific point in space by modifying our time. I just need to know where.”

“Wait, you can do that? How? Since when?” Marisa asks.

“Time isn’t a constant, it’s intrinsically connected to space. The ‘now’ at this spot can be the ‘then’ of another. So by placing our ‘now’ somewhere else, I can bypass Kaguya’s spell.”

“So you can go to a place where you can see the dinosaurs?”

Sakuya looks at Marisa confused. “What’s a dinosaur?”

“I think I can get you a direction. Give me a second.” Reimu closes her eyes and begins focusing. Soon, her body turns somewhat translucent and she peacefully floats up.

“What’s Miss Reimu doing?” I ask Marisa.

“She’s usin’ her ability to float away from Kaguya’s.”

“Wow! Miss Sakuya and Miss Reimu have such powers, what can you do, Miss Marisa?”

“Well…” Marisa scratches her cheek, but before she can answer, Reimu falls down and points somewhere.

“That way. Saw a clearing, probably Eintei.”

“Allow me.” Sakuya gracefully steps forward, extends her arm, snaps her fingers. ‘Now’ we’re somewhere else.

We stand right outside a very rickety looking shack.

“This ain’t Eintei,” Marisa points out.

Outside, we see a huge sealed tub of some reddish liquid, with what appears to be a person inside. “Hey-” her speech gets cut off by her vocal cords dissolving into nothing, “guys-” again, “little help-?”

Reimu grimaces. “Knew the clearing was too small.”

Carefully opening the top, we see more clearly who’s inside. A half-dissolved corpse that casually steps out of the tub and instantly regenerates back into the immortal Mokou. “Thanks.”

“What happened to you?” Reimu asks.

Mokou slaps the side of her head to make a bit of acid, stuck in her ear and melting her brain, come out. “Don’t know. I remember being knocked out and next thing I know I was trapped, constantly regenerating myself, making me unable to escape.”

Marisa looks nervous. “Being dissolved for all eternity… I really need to get to Eirin…”

“Not all eternity. Just until my remains become too much for the container and it leaks. Happened to me before.”

“It did? Guess when you can’t die lots of things end up happening,” I say.

Mokou turns to me. “I’ve never seen you around here. Who are you? How do you know about me?”

I puff my chest out, put my hands on my hips, and bite back on the whimper as I forgot one is broken. “I’m a halfway decent carpenter from the village! Read about you in the Gensokyo Chronicle!”

Mokou grimaces. “Ugh, that garbage written by the child with too much imagination and not enough sense? I’d rather you not know me at all.”

“Hey! Don’t talk about Miss Akyuu like that! The Hieda line is very respected in the village!”

“She does go off the rails sometimes,” Reimu comments.

“Well, she’s only human. You can’t expect her to know everything!”

“How about her speculation?” Sakuya adds. “She says I’m a vampire hunter. How rude, I’ve hunted more humans than vampires, and more leprechauns than humans.”

“The problem is that you all don’t give straight answers!”

“How about the fifty page rant about the dangers of human/Fairy reproduction?” Marisa also voices her concern.

“That’s common sense.”

“We agree on that, actually.” Reimu nods. “With Youkai too. Can’t tell you how many times some guy tried to get it on with a man-eating monster. Men can be so impulsive.”

I, also, nod. “True.”

She turns to me, angry for some reason. “Oh, is it? Is it true? They can also be mindless, and try to fix every problem that isn’t theirs, and can’t step aside to let people far more qualified do their job, and rush into things without a second thought!”

“Talk about the pot calling the kettle black, fufu.” Sakuya covers her mouth.

I look at Reimu silently for a second. “Are you still mad at me?”

“Oh, you think?”

“What did I do wrong?” I just don’t get it. “How can I fix it?”

“Agh! That’s what I’m talking about! Right there!”

“How fun is gonna be listenin’ to that for a while longer.”

“Almost makes me forget you’re dying in about…” Sakuya pulls out an ornate stopwatch. “Well, the doctor said a few hours, and it has been one hour so far.” She closes it and smiles at Marisa. “I say you’ve got an hour, give or take what you ate this morning.”

“One hour?!” Marisa exclaims, beginning to feel faint. She leans on a bamboo for support. “Guys, can the counselin’ wait?”

Reimu turns to her, before snapping back to me. “See?! You’re making us waste time.”

I start getting irritated. “How am I at fault here? I’m just trying to help. Excuse me, Miss Marisa.” I walk up to her and offer to carry her, but I almost let her fall due to shooting pain in my hand.

“Look where your help has got you.”

“You-!”

“Okay, okay.” Mokou steps in between us before we can escalate further. “You two are making me miss the days when I was isolated. We all need to get to Eintei, right? So let me take you there. Kaguya’s spell has no effect on me.”

“Why do you need to go?” Sakuya asks.

“Gotta ask a few…” She lights a fire in her hand. “Questions regarding that tub of acid.”

With that, she begins guiding us through the eternal forest. I manage to find a way to carry Marisa without upsetting my injury. It helps that she’s so preciously light…

Hum, normally my keen sense of danger would activate by now, but nothing. I feel… odd…

I look around. Sakuya and Mokou have a conversation.

“How did you bypass eternity?”

“My control over time gives me control over space, the two are connected.”

“No, they are not. Time moves forward at the exact same pace no matter what. It’s the perception of time that warps. You’re misunderstanding the concept.”

“My control over time allows me to do whatever the fuck I want. See, I can even swear!”

“Sh*t, she’s right!”

I turn to see Reimu, her eyes locked forward, stepping with absolute purpose. However, I can tell she’s still mad at me… for some reason.

I shrug and keep analyzing the girl in my arms. She’s not just light for me. Standing very short and with arms so thin I worry she might break, she awakens a very deep protector sense in me- still no danger? Odd.

It’s funny how much firepower this small girl carries. Everything about her is a contradiction, from her unassuming body possessing massive magical strength; her rough exterior for the interior of a pretty little thing who likes frilly dresses and sparkles; her brash personality hiding a very caring side- if the sense of danger doesn’t come soon, I’ll start talking about her boob window! Though there isn’t much to say about that area…

However, it never comes, leaving me with an empty feeling inside.

As we get closer to Eintei we start to see a more familiar road. A rabbit named Reisen, - the one with purple hair - stands in our way. “Turn back now, you short-ears! The master doesn’t want any intruders!”

Reimu takes one step forward. “I don’t have time for this.”

“Y-you don’t scare me! I may have left my comrades behind before, but not anymore. The master has given me a home, and I will never, ever, forsake-” Reimu takes another step, her sheer energy makes Reisen ‘eep!’ and run away to hide in the forest.

Sakuya giggles. “And to think that Sanae nominated her to be part of the Main Character Club.”

The clinic is on sight, but it seems Marisa is running out of time… “I see it… I see the light…” She waxes poetic in my arms. “I see the big boobs of the Shinigami… I see the small boobs of the Yama…”

“Quit being so dramatic. I die every other day.”

“UGH! Mama! I’m comin’ mama! Mokou, when I die, I wantcha to fill my body with explosives and throw it really hard at my father’s shop.”

“Why me?”

“Because Reimu is in a mood, I don’t really know the carpenter’s son, and I don’t trust Sakuya alone with my body…”

“You are not gonna die, look, we’re here already.” Reimu points to the… overly decorated entrance of Eintei. There are colorful balloons, streamers, and a large HAPPY B-DAY sign. We also see a big table with a bright cloth up top and lots of food neatly leading up to a giant cake. Moving tirelessly around it all, is one old lady making minute adjustments while another sits looking bored as she criticizes it.

“Boys at that age don’t like this stuff,” Junko, wearing a party hat, says.

“Oh, because you’re so good at caring for children,” Eirin responds in an overly sarcastic tone. “How would you even know? Yours died way earlier.”

“Excuse you, I know exactly what boys of all ages want. I’ve kidnapped plenty.” She appears to hear us, as she turns all of a sudden. “You are not supposed to be here.”

Eirin sharply follows her gaze. “I can’t believe this.” Instead of addressing us, she turns to Junko. “Can you somehow kill them without making impurities? Purifying them to nothing, maybe?”

Junko thinks for a second. “That’ll just make them pure Kegare.”

“Of course.” She takes a very deep breath. “How can I help you?” she says to us with a strained, polite smile.

Before any of us can speak, Marisa throws herself at the doctor’s feet. “It’s over doc! I’m through! Prepare whatcha need for the funeral! For Reimu, I leave all my wealth! For Rinnosuke, all my junk! For Alice and Patchouli, all their books I borrowed in the form of a big pyre! For Mima, find her and demand she gives my 20 bucks back!”

Eirin kicks her away. “Don’t touch me, earthling, you are not dying.”

… “… I’m not?”

“No, you imbecile. I said that to get you to leave. I thought you were gonna try to make amends on your last moments like a reasonable person.”

Marisa jumps up from the ground. “Ya moon people don’t understand how far we humans will go to avoid the consequences of our own actions! But if I’m not dyin’, what is it?”

She pulls out a cream and tosses it directly at her face. “You just scratched your mole until it got hurt, then suffered a mild infection.”

Marisa happily applies the medicine, but the second it touches her skin, it burns. “Is it supposed to do that?”

“No. I made it hurt. You deserve it for interfering with my plans. Now get out of here.”

“What plans?” Reimu steps forward, ready to beat the answers out of her if necessary.

Eirin stays silent. The tension in the air rises as it’s clear she won’t collaborate.

But before the worst happens

“Eirin? I hear voices. Have the guests of honor arrived?” The most velvet soft, gracious voice I ever heard comes from inside the building. It sounds somewhat familiar, but I can’t tell you from where…

“Ah, Kaguya.” Eirin turns away from us, completely disregarding Reimu as a threat. “No. I’m just dealing with some pests.”

“Hey!” Mokou perks up.

“What did I tell you about calling them pests?” Even scolding, Kaguya’s voice still sounds like music.

“Thank you.”

“The correct term is pets.”

“You-!” Mokou steps up to her. “Whatcha think you’re doing, pulling out that acid trick? That’s a dirty move!”

Kaguya smiles, somehow finding Mokou’s anger amusing. “Please, do forgive the unorthodox tactic, but I just had to make sure this evening wouldn’t have any untowards events occurring. But now that you’ve cunningly escaped - and granted you promise to behave - you are hereby forwarded an invitation to the festivities!”

“Behave? I’ll show you behavior-!” She is interrupted by Kaguya suddenly grabbing her, one hand on her feet, the other at her throat, before throwing her up into the sky, hard enough for her skin to melt and for a sonic boom to knock us off our feet.

Kaguya looks up. “I did warn her.” She turns to us with a beautiful smile. “And you all? How did you bypass my unchanging eternity?”

Sakuya speaks up, the only one who understands the odd question. “An unchanging eternity is a single instant, a single ‘now’. So we moved to a different ‘now’!” And also Mokou just dispelled the forest, but that doesn’t sound as cool.

Kaguya laughs. “Really now? How funny and admirable that the earthlings work around superior magic! You’re invited!” Much to Eirin’s horror, Sakuya begins happily munching away at the snacks.

“I-I helped too!” Reimu salivates at the delicious looking food.

“Did you really? Then you’re invited! Just make sure Lunar cuisine doesn’t make your food taste like dirt, or you may starve!”

“I almost died, can I eat, too?”

“Of course!”

“Kaguya, my princess.” Eirin leans close to her. “I believe you should reconsider. Their impurity may affect our ACTUAL guests.”

“Oh, come on Eirin! Hasn’t our time on Earth taught you that a little impurity can be just what a pure being needs? I’ve personally come to enjoy it, and you too, otherwise you wouldn’t murder so many people!”

“But…” Eirin looks at Junko for a brief second. “My plan.”

“So that’s what this is about.” Kaguya looks at her with a very cheery smile. “Well, how auspicious of me!”

Eirin stands back at her usual height, a smirk plastered on her face. “Is that because you’ve seen my reasons?”

“No. It’s because I couldn’t give less fucks about your plans!” She declares with joy. “Let them eat cake!” The girls cheer at hearing that, even Junko seems to have gotten her spirits lifted due to the princess energy.

Eirin remains stoically in the same spot. “As you wish, princess.” Her pleasant smile looks strained.

“Do you not speak, boy?” Kaguya refers to me. “What has gotten you so timid?”

I avert my gaze. Looking into such pretty eyes is hard… “Hum, sorry, Your Majesty.”

“What brings you to the party?”

“I’m, ahem.” Get it together man! Can’t embarrass myself in front of royalty! I stand proud. “I am a halfway decent carpenter, on a quest to find all Five Sacred Trees and become the greatest carpenter there ever was!”

Kaguya giggles. “A hero on a quest? Oh, but how quaint!” The way she looks at me makes my courage walls crumble in an instant. “Makes me very, very… nostalgic.” Her voice turns sultry, dangerous.

Oh cool, the keen sense of danger is finally back, but worse! “Hehe… I know it’s kinda dumb, but it’s my life goal, so… yeah…” Suddenly I feel very self-conscious.

“Hm, yes. Back then, men like you were a dime in a dozen, so hungry for glory, they gladly threw their lives away. Nowadays, men don’t seem hungry for anything other than food, here and on the moon, willful slaves to their masters.” She appears right in front of me. Even though I expected something like this to happen, I still jump back. “I’ve really missed men like you. I feel like a lion who was spoiled with a pack of gazelles every day, being forced to gnaw on bones for hundreds of years…”

“I, yeah?” The hairs at the back of my neck stand.

“And now, the most juicy, delectable, DEVOURABLE, little piggy has appeared right in front of the lion, do you understand?”

“I… wh-what’s a lion?”

Her smile grows even more predatory somehow. I hear a loud noise coming from above. Some kind of giant metal bird is slowly descending into the clearing.

“One of the trees is the Nezuko, correct?”

“Y-yes!”

“I can help you get it.” The bird lands and opens its mouth. Inside I see four silhouettes, two men and two women. Kaguya turns and points at one. “You see that girl, the one leftmost? Her fan is made from Nezuko.” She turns back to me. “She is one of the strongest Lunarians that’s ever lived, first daughter of the great Dragon God, creator of the land you call home. You want the wood? You just have to take it from her.” She turns her back to me and walks back to the table, swaying her hips in a very hypnotic manner. “You’ve my blessing, if those will save you that is~”

… I can’t believe moving Mjolnir is gonna be the easy one…

… and I forgot to ask Eirin to fix my hand…

---

I like this dlifffhanger more. Shoulda done something like that for Mjolnir. That was presented and resolved in the same chapter, here we can be all like "How's the carpenter's son gonna get out of this pickle!"

This Kaguya is definitely dangerous yet strangely arousing

I wonder what Reimu is thinking throughout this whole exchange
>>
>>47970245
>The sages didn't account for a maiden's fragile heart when they designed the system. If this goes on, Yukari may have to interfere physically!
That certainty sounds like an Experience, lets hope the calamity that is Yukari Yakumo doesn't interfere with Reimu's love life at the Hakurei Shrine

>>47970250
>“How about the fifty page rant about the dangers of human/Fairy reproduction?” Marisa also voices her concern.
Of course Marisa is pro human/fairy reproduction, everyone knows Luna Child is her mom.

>Of course Marisa is pro human/fairy reproduction, everyone knows Luna Child is her mom.
It was just fifty pages of height charts featuring Marisa. Quite convincing, though.
>>
>>47972998
A very persuasive argument indeed, additionally what sort of pervert would be attracted to fairies in the first place, everybody knows fairies aren't respectable parents and forget things easily.
You really have to wonder what sort of corrupt man Marisa's father is.

I think she's too distracted by the food go notice what's going on
>>
>>47970258
>“Behave? I’ll show you behavior-!” She is interrupted by Kaguya suddenly grabbing her, one hand on her feet, the other at her throat, before throwing her up into the sky, hard enough for her skin to melt and for a sonic boom to knock us off our feet.
Guya stronk!!!

I bet she could win against an Oni in arm wrestling

Really should've left this chapter for Tuesday as planned... sorry for both missing yesterday and today for the chapter being only what I wanted.
Goes to show present procrastination only means future work!

>>47970393
Get out! This is the human woman thread. Where we only like nice, normal, human girls!

>>47971585
Reimu currently doesn't like the carpenter's son. A young maiden's heart can such a fickle thing, one moment she's mad at him who knows the next.

>>47971833
Woe be upon Yukari if she does pop up again. She might get more than a shank.

>>47971890
We'll see if her blessings are enough to counter his bad streak.

>>47972053
She's a Lunarian. They're all absurdly strong, smart, capable, perfect, yadda yadda. they still lose to human men astronauts, as usual.

>>47972317
What's the word for being very scared and aroused? That's what he's feeling.

Even gazing upon these people, I feel like an insect. I hesitate to even call them people, they feel more like gods than those who walk Gensokyo every day.

The truth as to how I appear so brave is because there’s very little that is truly unknown to me. Miss Akyuu does a wonderful job documenting everything, even if she sometimes adds her own… opinions. However, references to the Lunar Capital and its inhabitants are sparse. The only times I ever hear about them is through hearsay of the fallout from something they did.

And considering the two Lunarians I actually do know about… suffice to say, I’m scared.

I glance back to my companions, all stop eating upon noticing the new arrivals, watching them with worry. Even Sakuya, normally so aloof, seems to be on high alert.

The Lunarians don’t step out of the bird, instead inspecting the surrounding area, which gives me a chance to really look at them. The rightmost couple consists of a serious looking woman with a seriously dangerous looking sword, standing very close to a slender guy near my age I assume, wearing some sort of large talisman covering his whole face; leftmost is another woman, who in contrast to the first, looks much more friendly and approachable, with her arm lovingly linked and her body pressed up to a truly gigantic man who looks done with his life, fat, hairy, and an expression that screams he’d rather be doing anything else.

That woman has the fan I need. Despite her easy-going smile, I can’t shake the feeling of wrongness everytime I look at her. Like she’s hiding a terrible secret.

I calm my nerves and force my legs to stop quivering, steeling myself to… to what? Ask her kindly for her fan? Not like I have a better first step in mind.

Before I can even think of taking a step, Reimu grips my forearm. “You shouldn’t talk to them alone.” I’ve never seen her with such a serious expression. Even all the other times she’s told me not to do something, she still had that ‘above-it’ aura to her. Like it didn’t really, actually concern her too much.

“Okay.” I feel like a coward for feeling such a relief at having Reimu’s support. I’m an embarrassment to my ancestors…

Each step we take makes me feel more queasy, the very short walk feeling like a true trek. “Let’s try to engage with the sisters first. They can be quite reasonable.”

Before we can get anywhere near close, the serious looking one unsheathes her sword. “Not one more step, impure beings.” I see the left couple murmuring something.

“Yorihime, it’s me,” Reimu says.

“I don’t know you.”

Reimu looks at her unamused. “We fought some time ago.” She points back. “Those two were also there.” Marisa and Sakuya wave.

Yorihime stops to think for a second. “Oh, I remember.”

“Took ya long enough…” Marisa grumbles.

“And who is that?” She points her blade at Junko, sitting while resting her elbow on the table and looking very bored.

“Me? I’m no one,” she says

“Can you put your sword down?”

“We can't let humans-”

“Humans?” the boy beside her asked. “Real humans! Oh, but they’re speaking! Who taught them?” He excitedly runs towards us.

“Milord, wait!” Yorihime goes after him.

He stands face to talisman with me. “How did you learn to talk? What’s your name? Is she your mate? Oh, I’ve got so many questions about Earth!”

I take a step back. “Uh…”

“Step back, sweetie.” The older sister comes with much more grace, contrasting with who I assume is her husband. “He’ll get scared.”

Well, she’s not wrong. “Ah, apologies mother.” He goes back to his group. “I’m just so fascinated by these creatures. Father won’t speak of his time walking these lands.”

“Afraid I might miss it,” the father grumbles.

“Welcome, honored guests.” Eirin decided this was the time to make her entrance. “And good birthday to the boy.” He looks ready for some kind of physical affection, but the most he gets is a nod of acknowledgment. “Please, enjoy our accommodations and… don’t mind the company.”

The sisters and the birthday boy say their respectful gratitude. The man stays behind. “Quite the odd guests you decided to bring, Yagakoro.”

Eirin matches his gaze. “What, do you perhaps know any beforehand?”

“No,” he answers without hesitance.

“Well, you should still say hi. Junko? Please come here.”

The woman rolls her eyes before walking over. “What?”

Eirin gestures to him. “Do you know this man?”

Junko looks him up and down. “No. Should I? Who is he?”

“Me? I’m no one. Just a hunter.”

“Hm.” Junko goes back to the table.

“Is that all, Yagakoro?”

“I suppose so.” If she’s rattled, she has had plenty of time to get used to the rattlings after all the events of today.

“I feel like we’ve heard stuff we weren’t meant to…” I say. “Maybe they forgot we were here.”

“Or maybe they don’t care.” Reimu goes to join the others, I follow her.

Sitting on the table, we see the hunter’s son already assaulting my companions with questions. “How long ago did you all discover fire? Did you do it on your own, did you have help? How does it feel to know you’ll die one day?”

“Wow, slow down there buddy!”

“Who’s speaking to me? Is this the voice of nature I’ve read about?” He looks side to side. Can he even look through that?

“Down here!”

“Oh goodness! You’re one of those magical beings, aren’t you?”

“Yup, I’m an ordinary-”

“A gnome! You’ve got the height, the demeanor and the pointy hat!”

“Uh?! No, I’m a-”

“Do you live in the forest? Do you collect various mushrooms?”

“I… well, that’s true, but that doesn't mean I’m a gnome! I’m a witch!” She pulls out her broom. “See?”

“Oh, that’s right! I must make sure to clean the dust from the warmest corner of the room to appease your whimsical ways!” He moves his hand to grab the tool. “Allow me!”

“Milord!” Yorihime sounds scandalized. “You shouldn’t be cleaning! That’s improper!”

He sadly retracts his hand. “Okay…”

“Oh come on, sister,” Toyohime says. “It’s just a game.”

Her sister crosses her arms. “Nobility such as his don’t rest.”
>>
>>47983107
“Wow.” The hunter doesn’t even look up. He lazily eats snacks. “Even on his birthday. You people, I swear.”

Junko makes a vague grunt that can be interpreted as agreement.

“You still haven’t answered who you are.” Yorihime directs her attention to Junko, who ignores her.

“If you don’t know, you don’t know,” the hunter says.

“Lady Yagakoro, I… don’t want to doubt your wisdom, but why invite her…” It’s hard for her to even voice her doubts.

“Trust me, it’s better you remain ignorant in this matter.”

“But…”

“When have I ever led you astray?” The hunter barks a laugh at that one.

I can feel piercing eyes on me. Kaguya, she is subtly gesturing to the fan. Okay… I gotta play this right.

First of all, there’s no way I can just take it. I’d have to be a mighty warrior or a sneaky thief. I should try to get it diplomatically, that’s for sure. Could just ask for it, maybe it’s not important. Now that I think about, I may be able to avoid the fan altogether if I manage to get from where she gathers the wood, then-

“Hey Toyohime. This guy wants your fan.” Kaguya turns out to be quite wild…

The woman in question laughs. “Do you now? Why would an earthling want such a destructive weapon?”

Weapon?! “No, no ma’am! I just want to know about t-the wood! I’m a halfway decent carpenter, you see-”

“How about we play a game for it?” Kaguya please!

“A game, eh? How bold of a simple human to ask that of me.” She seems amused.

“I didn’t-”

“Sister, even the chance of such destructive capabilities falling into the wrong hands is unacceptable.”

“I agree,” Eirin says. “But I don’t think he’d do anything malicious with it.”

“Thank you.” Finally, someone reasonable!

“He’s too dull to figure out the intricacies of our technology. Odds are he’ll kill himself.”

“Hey-”

“Can it be a competition?! Can I compete?! I want to test a human’s full potential!” The hunter’s son stands up and plants his hands on the table with excitement.

“Yes! And whoever succeeds, gets my hand in marriage!” For some reason, Yorihime throws her a very nasty glare.

“I just want the wood-”

“I just want to play!”

Kaguya’s eye twitch.

“Absolutely not, Milord! You shouldn’t engage with such peasant activities.”

“Get that stick out of your ass,” the hunter perks up. “Or maybe into it, dunno what’s gonna fix you. Let the kid play for one night.”

“Wise words, Mr. Hunter,” Sakuya says.

“Have I seen you anywhere? Feel like I have… what’s your name?”

“Me? I’m no one. Just a maid.”

“Funny girl. Didn’t ask who you were, I asked for your name. That answer doesn’t work.”

“Shouldn’t I-”

“See! Father says I can play!”

“No way, Milord. I apologize.”

He crosses his fingers and begs in a cutesy voice. “Please, aunty~”

The ice cold girl melts instantly, hugging him and pressing his head into her bust. “Okay, but only because you’re such a good boy!”

“But I don’t want to compete…” I whimper.

Yorihime turns to me with killing intent. “You will not go against Milord’s wishes.”
>>
>>47983117
I slump in my chair as I watch preparations being made for a competition I never agreed to. “Man, they wouldn’t even let me speak…”

“That’s just how the Lunarians are.” Reimu shrugs. “To them, we’re nothing. Bunch of stuck up pricks if you ask me.”

“They’re a scary bunch too!” Marisa exclaims. “I heard they talk about blowing up the Earth all the time.” I gulp.

“Don’t be scared, carpenter’s son.” Sakuya tries to cheer me up. “Your loss is inevitable, so why be afraid of it?”

“Geez, thanks for the vote of confidence…”

“It’s obvious the opinions of a simple, insignificant villager would mean nothing to beings such as they. Do you ask the ant whether it wants to be crushed?” Junko says.

“Didn'tcha hate the Lunarians?” Marisa asks.

“They don’t mean anything to me. All I care about is Chang’e. I’m a committed hater. Hecatia, on the other hand, is more of a free hate kind of person. She hates the Lunar Capital in general.”

“That makes two of us!” Somehow, the hunter hears her.

Sakuya gasps. “She’s a tuls!”

“But why are you sitting with us?” Reimu raises an eyebrow.

“To socialize.”

“The preparations are ready.” Eirin comes and states matter-of-factly.

“I’m surprised you’re going along with this nonsense,” Reimu says.

“As long as it makes my grand-nephew happy.”

“You missed a few hundred greats!” The hunter has some very keen ears!

I think of arguing further, but the slight twitch in Eirin’s eye tells me that the last thing she wants now is arguments. I follow her, and soon, the rest do as well.

The hunter’s son and I stand in front of a semicircle of all guests. I notice that Yorihime is wearing a headband and a white shirt with his talisman-clad face painted on it, all while holding a couple of glowsticks she’s flailing around. “Wooooo! Go, Milord!”

The hunter steps forward. He reads from a piece of paper. “Brave contestants, blah blah blah, to get the prized, yadda yadda, you must do this and that and some other bullshit.” He throws the paper over his shoulder. Kaguya looks offended. “Here’s the deal. There’s gonna be seven tests; the Tengu test, Youkai test, Moon test, ‘Hermit’ test, God test, Master test and Dragon test. Got it?”

The hunter’s son nods. I raise my hand. “I have a question.”

“Each test awards a point. Whoever has the most points, wins. For the first test, you must get a single feather from Lord Tenma and bring it here, any questions?”

“No, father.”

“Actually, I-”

“Good.” He walks back to the crowd without a second thought.

How frustrating! It’s like I don’t even exist! Like I’m some sort of toy! I look at my rival with contempt.

“Oh? What’s wrong?” He must’ve felt my gaze.

“Why do you care?”

He analyzes me for a second. “Your hand. It hurts, doesn’t it? May I see it?”

I roll my eyes. “Not like I can stop you.” I extend my broken hand.

He hovers his own over it, some kind of light emanating from them. In seconds my hand not only feels cured, it feels better than ever!

“I can tell you don’t like me. I just want you to know that all I want is for us to have a fun time!”

“I…” Maybe I was too hasty… I must be just as much a mystery to them as they to me. Who can blame them for not knowing how to act? “I’d like that too!”

I can feel his smile through the paper. “Great! Let's begin at the count of three, shall we?”

I smile back at him, feeling comradery already growing. Maybe I do have a chance, he seems to believe I do! Together we count 1, 2, 3-

From the corner of my eye, I see him briefly blink out of existence and back, now holding a half naked girl sniffing a large feather. “I thought, before confronting Lord Tenma, I may as well check everywhere to see if I could find his feathers somewhere else.” The Tengu lady he brought looks frozen.

“Point for the hunter’s son!” Kaguya announces.

… Then again, maybe I don’t…

This whole "Youmu gets no free time" stuff is nonsensical, and if anything it's intentionally misleading because the source is a fucking Aya article. Either ways it doesn't apply to Youmu. I'm back. Still thinking about all the free time I had on Tuesday to write this... lots of lessons will be learned this chapter, mine is the consequences of procrastination.
Also, I don't have space for the end of chapter notes, so I'll put it here. You should read it after finishing, or not, kinda chaotic in the end, I know. It's my poor planning. Too ambitious, too many characters, too much to fit in a 3k limit. All while I was very busy? I really just want to move on from this arc and get into something more fun.
This is a Reimu love story, the unlove part has overstayed it's welcome.
Sorry for the kinda disjointed structure, I've learnt from my mistakes and try to keep things simpler.

The Youkai test stands before us.

“This is mayonnaise. You must replace Yakumo’s cellulite cream with it, got it?” The hunter says his part and leaves again.

I look at his son, he looks back. “I really don’t wanna do that…” he says. “That lady sounds really nasty.”

“My problem is with being mean for no reason. I don’t see how this tests anything about us…”

“We both fail the test and no one gets a point?” He offers me a handshake.

“Deal.” Y’know, I think I could do this test. But it’d be unfair to him being forced to compete.

“Oh, come on!” Eirin shouts. “The one event I was looking forward to!”

“Wow. Never seen Eirin so… with emotions.” Marisa looks a little creeped out.

“How interesting,” hunter’s son says.

Well, I didn’t get a point, but neither did he. I’m counting this as a win.

I go back to where my group is sitting as the hunter prepares the next test. “Not a great start, but I’m sure I’ll turn things around!”

“Unlikely.” Junko crosses her arms. “You stand no chance. Any more trying will only lead to further humiliation.”

“Again.” Reimu glares. “Why are you here? You’re not part of our group.”

“I’m not part of the other group either. I’m only part of the ‘Kill Chang’e to Death’ group.”

“And what sort of activities does that group do?” Sakuya asks.

“Fantasize about killing Chang’e to death. I’m the only member.”

“Figures,” Marisa grumbles.

“But she’s right,” Reimu says. “You won’t win. We need to think of something.”

She doesn’t appear quite as mad at me anymore, and now that my hand is healed, I shouldn’t bother someone like her with my requests. “Don’t worry, Miss Reimu. I’ll handle this on my own.”

She doesn’t react for a few very long seconds. “Okay. Do what you want.” She grabs her chair and drags it away.

Dang. “What am I doing wrong?”

“Eh, don’t worry buddy.” Marisa pats my arm. “She gets like that sometimes. She’ll come around.”

Yeah, for you. I’m not her friend, not an equal… “Thanks, Marisa…”

Reimu chooses to sit in the middle of both groups, purposefully staying away from anyone. However, there is one person who happens to be close enough. “Well, I don’t believe we’ve greeted each other properly,” Toyohime says.

“Hm.” Is Reimu’s only response.

The princess smiles. “I feel like someone’s upset.”

“Mind your own business. Don’t stick your nose where it doesn’t belong.”

“Oh, but my nose is very sensitive! It can smell conflicted feelings, crushed expectations, guilt, and blood from kilometers away!”

“What was the last one?”

“Brave contestants!” Kaguya’s announcement interrupts her. “Come forward for your next challenge!”

“That one’s my son, you know?”

“How exactly did you have a kid? I thought you Lunarians were all about avoiding any life and such.”

She smirks. “Well, things can be so unpredictable. Sometimes, it’s better to just let go of control for a bit. Even if deep inside you know it’s…” She eyes the hunter like she wants to make him the hunted. “Wrong.”

“Ew.”

For the moon test, we have to point at the former Moon Sage… whoever that is. “Hey, hunter’s son.”

“Hm, what is it, friend?”

“I’ve no idea what a sage is.”

“It’s a color.”

“Thanks Sakuya. I mean what they do or where to even look.” I offer my hand with a smile. “Wanna skip?”

“Oh don’t sell yourself short! There’s no need to give up so easily!”

“But I’m not giving up…” He was the first one to suggest such a thing.

He puts his hands on his hips. “It sure does sound like it. Surely we can figure out who the Sage was if we put our minds to it!”

At least one of us knows who a ‘Sage’ is. “All I know is that they supposedly made the Great Barrier.”

He places his hands in front of where his mouth should be. “I didn’t know that! You’re so smart! Now we just need to think separately who it could be. See, teamwork makes the dream work!”

I scratch the back of my head with my newly healed hand. “I don’t know. Having company is cool and all, but if the actual work is done by another person… kinda loses its meaning.”

Hunter’s son doesn’t respond for a second, seemingly very deep in thought. Is he listening? Maybe I should focus on my task-

“But you’re still doing the work. Letting others handle what you can’t is, like, common sense, I guess?” He seems to be kind of out of it.

“There is nothing I can’t do with enough time!” I puff up my chest. “Even if it takes me a hundred years, I’ll achieve my goals with my own two hands!”

He surveys the crowd. “But why though? Why do you have to be the one to do it? If someone wants carpentry done, they come to you, why not the other way around.”

I shrug. “Don’t wanna be a bother. They’ve probably got more important things to do.”

He begins pointing at each one. “But what if they WANT to help?”

I raise an eyebrow. “What do you mean? Of course they want to help, otherwise they’d never offer! They just don’t need to, so I’m taking the weight off her shoulders!”

“Her all of a sudden? I thought we were talking they.”

“I-”

“Great Aunt Yagakoro!” He suddenly points to the woman in question. “You’re the former Sage!”

Wh-? “Exactly! Great job, son! Yagakoro is the FORMER Sage, no longer in control of anything, everyone give it up!” He begins slow-clapping.

She crosses her legs in a very refined manner. “Your attempts at insults are quite amusing. I thank you for the half-time entertainment.”

The hunter grumbles, before speaking up again. “Well, Kaguya, announce the points already!”

“Wait, hey! You were distracting me!” I accuse hunter’s son.

He innocently tilts his head. “Did I? I told you to start thinking about who it might be.”

“Yeah!” Yorihime exclames. “Milord doesn’t scheme! He only wins honorably!”

“If you feel that way, I guess I could forfeit the point…” he sadly says. “It’s… not a problem, even though it’s my birthday…”

I put my palms up. “No, no, it’s cool! I’ll just have to make a better comeback!”

“Great! Another point for me!” He goes back to his usual self like nothing.

The test is to drive away a Kishin who is on the surface hunting Hermits. Hunter’s son says he feels bad for last time, so he’s guiding me to the Kishin and letting me have the first shot.

“Is this it?” I say upon noticing an Oni-like person hiding in the bushes, wearing a very professional suit.

“Yes. Do you see that?”

“The unattended child standing down a precariously balancing cage?”

“That’s a Hermit trap. Works a hundred percent of the time!”

I’m not sure about that. The only thing the nice Hermit lady who used to come to the village devoured was food. Wonder what happened to her, one day she just banished. Hope no Shinigami got to her…

“I’ll let you get the first shot at it. Sorry about the last test, again.”

“How am I ever gonna make a Kishin go away?” Even the idea seems far fetched.

“You can just ask him. The Kishin work for the natural order of life and death and are very focused on it. Surely by saying he’s disturbing you, he’ll go back to Hell.”

“What if he gets mad and takes me with him!”

He taps his forehead in exasperation. “Didn’t you hear? They won’t do anything to upset the order. That includes killing you before your time. Besides, there’s my family close-by, they’ll help us if things go wrong! Trust me friend!”

“Okay…” Just asking shouldn’t be too bad. Either he gets mad and I run back to safety, or he agrees and I get a free point. Heavens know I need it…

I get close and call out to no avail. He did say they’re very focused, so I tap his shoulder and-

My newly healed hand shines bright and vaporizes his shoulder, leaving his head dangling to the side. “Rude,” he says.

“Ah! Sir, I-I’m sorry! I-it wasn’t my intention!”

I notice from the corner of my eye a blue blur snatching the little boy and running away. The Kishin sighs. “You’ve just cost me that wicked Hermit. We’ll see what the Yama thinks of this.”

“Wait!” Hunter’s son comes running. “It’s not his fault!” He grabs my hand. “I mended his wounds with my divine power, so it must’ve reacted with your demonic being!”

“It did?!” I tear my hand away.

“So are you taking the fall for him?” The Kishin wants a clear answer.

My healer bows his head. “Yes. I will stand any punishment.”

“You know,” a sly smile appears on his dangling face, “you could’ve just remained quiet and no one would ever know. Even at the final hour that sin would not be relevant.”

“Order must be maintained at all costs. I’m no outlaw.”

“Good to hear. I will come back soon.” He gets swallowed by the earth.

Wait…

“Point for the hunter’s son!” Crud. Now because I didn’t do Yukari’s test, I can only hope to tie, and that won’t give me the Nezuko. And I didn’t even attempt that test because…

I point my finger at my rival. “You’ve played dirty in every game!”

Yorihime jumps up. “That’s not true! Milord would never stoop to such lows to win!”

“You’re right aunty. Don’t be a sore…” His talisman slips a bit, revealing a vicious smile full of rows of sharp teeth. “Loser.”

“But he was totally cheating. It was obvious.” Reimu converses with her unlikely friend, Toyohime.

“I wouldn’t call it THAT…” His mother, as expected, comes to his defense. “It’s more like using, ahem, unorthodox methods.”

“It still isn’t honorable or whatever.” The contestants go back to their groups. While I get pats on the back and gentle words of encouragement, hunter’s son is praised and paraded. It’s the only time the hunter doesn't seem to want to die, probably because of the way his son won rather than the fact he did.

“Shouldn’t you be with your friend to cheer him up?”

Reimu huffs. “He never needs me apparently. It’s not even like he’s my friend or anything, we barely know each other,” she says, annoyed.

Toyohime hums. “Talking about my sister, it’s pretty sad isn’t it?”

“Were we talking about your sister?”

“She has this image of my son, borne from little more than appearance and bias. Stubborn girl needs the world to conform to her ideas, so any time he does something she doesn’t accept, she gets angry, not at how he is, but at how he isn’t.”

Reimu stays silent for a second. “Why are you telling me this?”

Toyohime ignores her. “And what a shame too. Maybe they could be a good couple, but her childish crush won’t even let them be friends.”

“Alright, alright!” Reimu stands up. “I get it, okay? But he better have learned his lesson too!” She begins walking towards her friends. “No need to use your sister and son as a made up example couple, gross!”

“Made up?” But Reimu was too far away to hear.

I sit with my head slouched, defeated.

“Why are they celebratin’?” Marisa grimaces at the other guests, currently praising their superiority over humans.

“So, did you learn your lesson too?” Reimu goes to the point.

“That life is meaningless, I’ll never win anything, and I should just kill myself, or worse, become a seamster?” I say.

“You shouldn’t think like that,” Junko comments.

“You’re right!” I look up, puff up my chest and flex my arms. “Life is precious, every failure is but a step to success, and I’ll live forever!”

“What-? So easily?!” Marisa looks flabbergasted.

Reimu puts a single hand on her hip and smirks. “You really want to have to deal with Kishin after today?”

“Of course! Now I have a weapon!” I hold up my palm. “This baby can reap the reapers, Reimu!”

“What happened to the miss?”

I avert my gaze and scratch the back of my head. “I don’t mean any disrespect, just…” I look at hunter’s son. “I really ought to stop changing my behavior for someone based on a title.”

“So you did learn a lesson, after all. I take it you’re gonna be rude to me now.”

“Yep. Super mean.” I laugh at my own silly joke, Reimu joining in with a small giggle.

Junko, surprisingly, looks pleased. “It’s good you don’t let a failure define you. It’s not a good life.”

“How did you reach that conclusion? From what I heard, you were an uncontrollable, destructive, delusional, luciferian ball of anger. No offense,” Sakuya says.

“Thank you for not wanting to offend.” Junko rolls her eyes. “I’ve had time to ruminate. I don’t believe I’ll ever be able to fully let go of my grudge, but I can at least prevent people from doing the same. That’s why I told Eirin that she needs to stop thinking about that sake.”

The hunter hears from so far away. “What sake?!” From the distance, I can see every Lunarian making a nervous expression.

“The sake Yukari Yakumo stole from the moon and gave to her? Reisen told me ever since then she’s never being paranoid.”

“That useless bunny!” For the first time, Eirin screams.

Toyohime hurries to us. “You need to leave immediately-” She turns her back to us as an explosion occurs after the hunter makes fun of Eirin further. “Thanks for coming!” She shows her open palm to us and, in an instant, we’re outside the forest.

“Where’s Junko?” Marisa asks.

“Toyohime’s pure magic doesn't work on Junko, far purer.”

“How do you even know that, Sakuya?”

I collapse in the soft grass. “Man, what a couple of days you guys…” I close my eyes. “I could sleep for a year.”

“Did you learn another lesson?” I crack one eye to see Reimu daintily sitting beside me.

“That trying to stay awake for three days straight is a bad idea?”

“No. That you shouldn’t have done it for two of those days completely alone.” She flicks my nose. “You know how boring my job is? I could use a break that doesn’t involve some trouble-maker.”

“I’ll think about it. I’m the opposite of a trouble-maker, after all. I’m a solution-destroyer!”

“Dumb carpenter’s son.” For some reason, that feels lighter than before. Without the anger from before and the baggage from the start.

“Well.” I sit up. “Even though we didn’t get the wood, I still have to thank you all for the help. Reimu, Sakuya, oh, and Marisa too!”

The last girl looks offended. “Almost forgot me, eh? Well, you asked before what I can do, right?”

“Yes, I think?”

“I may not be able to cheat like these other girls, but…” she searches for something in her pouch. “I can play dirty like them Lunarians!” She presents the Nezuko fan!

My energy returns as I jump back up. “Wow!”

Reimu stands up with less. “How?”

Marisa points at herself with her thumb. “While the older sister turned her back, I snatched it!” She throws it to me. “My pleasure.”

I catch it and hold it up to the sky. “Nezuko get! Three more to go!” My muscles ache. “Tomorrow…”

We feel the morning warmth begin to appear. “Yeah, gettin’ kinda late. Or early.”

“Milady will wake up soon.”

“See you all later!” I wave my goodbyes as we all go our separate ways. Except for Reimu.

“I’m escorting you to the village,” she says, and she means it this time.

“Thanks!” I smile.

In the boundary between reality and fantasy is a room, unreachable to anyone but a few. Inside this room there are seven chairs, each one belonging to supremely powerful individuals. Sitting on those chairs is… no one.

Okina sits in her own wheelchair and Yukari stands.

The Youkai Sage looks to where her companions should be. Okina is busy spying on a couple of fairies bathing (as usual), Tenma isn’t here (a blessing), the Master Builder is probably drunk while making frilly doll dresses (as usual), Kasen is dead (or at least she’ll wish she was once she comes back and has to do all the work she left), the Dragon Sage (not a real dragon) sent to spy on Remilia after her rampage betrayed them and stayed with her, Yukari is here (a curse), and lastly-

“Ugh! Can’t you make a window or something?” The Moon Sage is also here!

(Bigger curse…)

“Well, well, it’s been far too long-”

“Hold that thought for a sec. Is it true you mind broke Yagokoro with some sake?”

She looks side to side, confused. “Yeah, why?”

He laughs. “Oh man, that’s too much.” It takes him a full twenty seconds to compose himself. “Anyways, you might wanna look for my son.”

Yukari frowns. “Why?”

“Because he’s gone missing,” he says without a care in the world.

“And how is that my problem?”

“Well, his aunt decided to go look for him before someone can, quote, ‘steal his virginity that she’s worked so hard in grooming all these years for’, unquote.”

“Uh huh.”

“Then, his mom declared that all boys' virginity belong to their mothers because they have dibs. Junko agreed with her.”

“Why was she there?”

“Only for Kaguya to jump on the bandwagon. I think she wants to marry him for winning a competition.”

“…”

“Also, Eirin wants to kill him for revenge. You see, I insulted her. She’s killed for less.”

She looks at him unamused. “Your family is so messed up. Where do we begin?”

“We? Who’s we?” He smirks. “More like you begin. I’m here to take Okina to a brothel.”

“Hell yeah brother!” The woman high fives him.

“What-?! But Gensokyo as a whole is at stake!”

Both perverts look at her as if saying ‘yes, and?’ “I can just ask my father-in-law to make a new one. Maybe he’ll make a new Yukari too.”

“One with a flat chest!”

“Saggers all the way. If you argue with me on this, we’re gonna end up fighting.”

“Don’t get like that. I’ll even hook you up with a VIP room in one of those nasty Hell brothels run by the mob. I know a guy who knows the boss, he’ll get us in!”

“Awesome!”

“Wait!” Yukari calls out to the two, already at the door. “Aren’t you worried about your son?”

The hunter shrugs. “Let him live a little. Besides, this place is a joke.”

“Dunno, man,” Okina says. “Stuff’s changed, people moved in.”

He looks incredulous as he rolls Okina out. “Who could’ve possibly moved in in the last couple years who could pose a threat to a pure-blooded Lunarian?”

Yukari is left alone. “Well, if everything gets destroyed, I can at least live inside Eirin’s head rent-free.”

A few weeks have passed since we got the Nezuko. The next wood we’re (well, mostly me. Marisa and Sakuya are busy and the thought of slogging through books of information about trees makes Reimu faint from exhaustion. Her loss) looking for is Hiba, one closely linked to Youkai, or so the Hieda’s library and Reimu’s turtle grandpa say.

I looked into every tree I could think of that has something to do with Youkai, but alas.

“So,” Reimu says with a mouthful full of the snacks I bring everytime I visit the shrine. “No luck?”

I sigh. “Not yet. Tried everywhere, but nothing. I even went back to Kourindou on the off chance he had the wood in stock.”

“How is he by the way? Haven’t visited him in a while.”

“He apparently took up gardening. His store is full of flowers all of a sudden.”

“Weird.” And with that, we fall back into silently sharing tea. It’s comfortable in a way. Just sitting on the wooden entrance steps, watching into the horizon. Sometimes we see some tiny specks in the distance, those being Fairies flying. Other times we just decide to watch Aunn go around her day, the girl too kind to accept our invitations to join us. We even go to the back of the shrine for a change of scenery and to converse with the wise turtle living in a pond.

I grimace a bit. “Never thought I’d be around so many… weird folk. The rumors were right, this is a Youkai shrine!”

Reimu glares at me. The fact that she hates when someone points that out makes it much more fun to tease! “Well, not like it’s that different from the village.” She dismissively shrugs.

“I still can’t believe it…” A little after Eintei, I was brought to the shrine and made to be part of ‘The Group’. “You were very forthcoming about the whole thing…” Youkai disguising themselves in the village, businesses serving them in secret, the respected humans like Akyuu and the Master Builder being in cahoots with them, even sweet little Kosuzu was in on it! I thought her sudden battlelust was puberty.

“Well, last time I kept secrets and it ended badly.” She looks at me and gives me a lazy smile. “If you’re gonna hang out with us, you’re bound to find some of it out sooner or later. This way you won’t get manipulated that easily.”

We laugh for a bit, but she gets serious all of a sudden.

“You know you can’t tell anyone. If it seems like too much, you come to me-”

“Yeah, yeah. Not this again.” It was made very clear the importance of maintaining the masquerade. “Always knew there was stuff I wasn’t meant to know, even now I feel like you and me are still in the dark, but honestly? I felt the same way when dad told me the meat I was eating was the chicken I cared for since birth.” I shrug. “That’s the way things work, and that’s that.”

Reimu smirks. “What a simple-minded outlook. Expected from a dumb carpenter’s son.”

This is my revenge for the Youkai shrine comment. “I told you my name already! It’s-”

I look to the side and see Reimu with her eyes closed, happily enjoying the breeze heralding the end of the dry Summer and the coming of the pleasant Autumn. She looks peaceful, and I’ve come to learn that peace is something she always craves.

I heard a lot of her friends saying it’s just because peace means she doesn’t have to work, but I think better of her.

“I love autumn. Finally I have someone here to hear me say it.” She has a wide smile. “It’s nice and cool, the gentle rain helps me sleep, and most importantly, no annoying girls screaming-

“Reimu!” The annoying Sanae came running and yelling.

“Jinxed it.” I smirk at the grumpy shrine maiden frowning at the cheery shrine maiden.

Sanae comes up to us and catches her breath. “Ah, good, carpenter’s son is here!” She puts her fist up, stars appearing in her eyes. “I’ve come to give you a hint towards your next wood and then join your party with the other human girls!” She looks around. “Where are the other human girls?”

“Marisa is studying a book she stole, and Sakuya is doing… whatever the hell she does,” Reimu answers.

“Oh, well, more time for me then! I still have that clue!”

“Awesome! What is it?” I excitedly ask.

“Got something that might interest ya, stranger.”

“Why are you speaking like that?” Sanae ignores her.

“The Habi wood, eh? A fine piece of material! You’ll need guts to get it, as it’s found near Youkai!”

“I know that,” I say. “But thank you!”

“W-well… then surely you’re interested in the secrets of this land, stranger-”

“Told him already.”

Sanae loses some motivation. “Wanna look in Youkai Mountain? I can guide you…”

“That’s the first place I looked. What else?”

To our surprise, Sanae drops to her knees. “It’s not fair you all get to go on epic quests without me! I thought Gensokyo would be more exciting, but all I do nowadays is clean up after Lady Suwako’s boyfriends and console Lady Kanako about Lady Suwako’s boyfriends.” She crawls to Reimu and hugs her legs. “Please! I’m getting old! I made a RE4 reference! Sumireko told me they made a remake, and I said ‘but that game’s still relatively new!’”

Reimu looks conflicted between kicking her or comforting her. She looks at me for help.

“I guess we can take another look.”

Sanae jumps back up, pumping her fist in the air. “Sanae has joined the party!” Even more stars appear in her eyes. “Let’s go!”

As we begin making our way, I notice a coin laying on the ground. How lucky! I kneel to pick it up, narrowly avoiding a log which was swinging at me.

Reimu looks unimpressed. “That’s the eight one this week.”

“But it’s Monday,” Sanae adds.

“I really don’t know what’s causing these traps to attack me.” I scratch the back of my head with my right hand. “Not one worked thus far. Maybe I’m blessed with good fortune! Things are going my way all the time lately!”

“Maybe you pissed someone off during your search for the Youkai wood. Can you think of anyone?”

“Not really.”

Yuyuko had left in search of master Youki. She said, “He’s had long enough. I’m getting all the sword classes I’m owed, no matter what.”

That saddened Youmu. For some reason, back when her master was with them, Yuyuko was very diligent with her classes, going every night and not coming out until morning. But now with Youmu she won’t even entertain the idea…

“I must train harder and prove myself!” She has a mission. Protect Hakugyokurou from intruders, and of course, its Youkai Tree, Saigyou Ayakashi.

Nothing short of Yuyuko will make her tear her eyes away- “Youmu.” Well, she’s her close friend, so she supposes it counts.

“Lady Yukari. Lady Yuyuko isn’t here, sadly.”

“Ugh, this complicates things,” she mumbles. “Now I won’t be able to have her bail me out and pretend I planned it all along…” She looks straight at Youmu with severity. “Where is she? Tell me at once.”

“Uh, she said she was looking for master Youki.”

“Damn it all!” Yuakari says in a very non-elegant manner. “Good luck tearing her away from that one… looks like I’m on my own.”

“If I may ask, what’s going on?”

“Youmu, I don’t mean to alarm you, but there are several supremely powerful individuals looking for a single thing. If that thing gets found, there’s a very high chance we’re all gonna die.”

“…”

“Inform as soon as she gets back and takes a bath.” The gap she appeared in begins closing. “She liked to make me jealous by shoving her scent in front of me. Never even shared him one time, selfish bit-” The gap finally closes completely.

Youmu feels panic creeping up, but she stamps it down. “I have a duty. I can remain collected as long as I keep protecting Hakugyokurou and Saigyou Ayaka-”

She finally turns back to her post.

“…”

Poor Youki. He's gotten so old that he can barely lift his sword anymore, but Yuyuko still insists on having swordsmanship training from him instead of allowing him to retire.
Or perhaps she's just upset about the rumors that he's been spending his time teaching new, younger proteges, and insists that she's a much better student than they ever could be.
