I have one of the 16in fixed stock rifles, once I got the gas all figured out she runs great with a grab bag of ~2k rounds fired so far. I think I’ll get a prism soon.
>modernizable
Not to rag on you in particular, but I don’t really get this one when I see it. You can get an optics rail, MLOK, folding stock, QD sling swivels, etc etc. Granted there doesn’t seem to be many aftermarket buttstock options, but LOP on the default one works well for me so I haven’t shopped around. If anything the FAL feels more “modern” to me with conventional charging handle placement and BHO. Besides, if you just want .308 for the best price and ease of modification, just get an AR10 and call it a day. Otherwise, your heart/autism guides you to a battle rifle, whether that’s a G3, FAL, M14 or whatever else is out there.
>mags
you aren’t wrong about that one, DSA steel mags soon(?) hopefully

I wanted to tell him all this and more, but I didn't have the vigor or energy last night. You can get all you described and more at DSA directly. PTR store has like 3 things for the PTR, and the rest you have to fish for yourself from multiple outlets, multiple stores at all kinds of crazy prices.

As a platform, the FAL is superior to the PTR. But I don't know about accuracy. I've seen things said about both being 3moa to 1.5moa rifles using the right barrel plus the right ammo. It's a hodgepodge of varying opinions. I have been able to hit 1.7moa on my FAL with a like new barrel, but the results were too inconsistent. With plain cheap ammo, I'm at 2moa to 2.5moa on demand.

M77 $1300 on Atlantic, is it available cheaper anywhere else?
>>
>>60886667
That’s all completely valid, but the options are a lot more expensive. I’m very interested in para FALs but they’re very expensive bone stock for what they are in my opinion. My autism just heavily leans FAL.
In saying that, would you recommend the jungle warrior/any of the cheaper variants?
>>60887219
That’s pretty good yeah. Idk I don’t mean to be autistic I swear. It’s just something I’ve really wanted but I’m a stickler for spending more on something than it’s worth but again I’m just being autistic
>>
>>60887597
To add to this, my main point is I can buy a ptr 101 GIR for 1200 dollars and mount my optics no issue.
With a DSA, and particularly a para 18in one because I like those, I’d have to pay about 1800 dollars (I also can’t find one available) and then an extra 130 for the rail mounted receiver, and idk how well those hold zero honestly.
I’m not trying to be a faggot but you see what I mean, right?

DSA sells them directly. But for an 18” PARA it’s looking more like $2K I think, last time I checked.
If the rail had issues then people would complain and DSA wouldn’t sell them. They work. You’re overthinking this
>>
>>60889055
So the bush warrior 18” para is 1800, but the Congo para is 2000. They’re really cool. It’s just a lot of money. Plus the 100 for a railed receiver. I could have a ptr for that kinda money plus an optic, you know? I am overthinking it, but then again it’s like a 600-800 dollar difference so it’s worth thinking about I feel

Okay, maybe $1800 + $100 for optic rail is a big ask. Sig Treads are top line performers and can be found for $1300. Ruger Sfar, for $1000 if you shop around. XCRs go for $2200 with sales and if you buy it in parts. This is definitely a (You) problem.

I'm not against it, your original approach made sense. Idiots can't stick to that concept and then wonder why jannies don't make a special exemption for them. Someone on FalFiles this morning said that they called DSA, and DSA said they had some forged Type 1 receivers available. I'm tempted to call and see if they have any Type 2 sitting around for my kits, it's hard for me to justify the $1000+ asking price of a stripped DS prefix receiver.
>>
>>60889698
I already did and they said they're not making any type 2 gendarmerie marked receivers.
I would settle for a DSA forged type 2 because $5something is better than a grand plus like you say for an old one.
>>
>>60889116
No I get it, I was in the same spot.
Besides the rail you would still have to buy a scope, sling, mags, etc. You might end up spending 3 bandz if you go the FAL route. 2 with the G3.
You’ll probably just end up getting both desu
>>
>>60889765
No that's exactly what I'm talking about, just normal DSA forged Type 2. I think the forged Type 1's they have currently must be leftover G1 marked variants or something. They did make some Gendarmerie Type 1's, but I don't think those were forged.
>>
>>60889852
>>60889765
Sure enough, they do appear to have forged "normal" SA58 Type 1 receivers in stock right now. It's a shame my kits are both Type 2

Over $4000 in custom work and parts, just so he could have his ideal DMR rifle. All the while, I was wondering why not just get a XCR or Bren 2 which look much the same and fulfill the same role. Not really. For most practical purposes, 5.56 and 7.62x39 outclass .308 in just about every way. The LARP factor is a huge motivator for a lot of people, though, and it’s not like .308 is a bad caliber choice. It’s just that it only outperforms the intermediates in very specialized roles.

There is apparently an aftermarket rear sight that uses all diopters. Alternatively you can adjust the rear sight height so that the 200m sight is sighted in for 100m.

>>60900186
It’s a bad design feature to make the charging handle responsible for locking the action if it makes it so difficult to extend. The thing was originally designed for a battlefield. Imagine running out of ammo and having to put your gun on the ground to pry the charging handle open, just to shoulder it again to open the action, then finally getting to place a new magazine. This is apparently a very common issue with roller ptr rifles, and the designs they’re based on. It makes me wonder why guys here fanboy so hard for them. I would take any of my other battle rifles over it for this reason alone.

Because its the cheapest general service issued BR that people can get. I don't count current AR-10's since they have a lot changed from their Sudanese and Portuguese issued ones. I can guarantee you if M1A's or FAL's were as affordable people would be fawning over them also. If anything they might view it objectively with the FAL and realize it is a lot easier to live with as a soldiers rifle. Easy to clean, ergonomics are great, close range sights are useable, trigger is better. Only thing the G3/ptr has going for it is its apparent accuracy if you bubba it with the welded rail and mags cost less than a value meal run at Micky D's.

tl;dr it is a relative poor mans rifle of rifles that are as close to their issued configuration as possible but it is horrible to actually live with if you look at it objectively

The PTR GIs are coming with a rails welded on. I always hear its a "poor mans" battle rifle in that its cheaper than the alternatives, it coming at $1200 to $1500 isnt exactly feasible to every average wagie joe.
For that price I would expect any firearm to function a lot smoother than it does. But whatever, I still like it. It just requires me to curse at it a bit more frequently than my other guns.

A few years ago I gave my dad a Mini-14GB for Father's Day and while he was on the john, I snuck it into the house and hung it on one of his gun racks in the living room (taking the place of a Ruger .44 carbine) without saying anything. It took a couple of hours sitting there before he noticed.
>pic mildly related, made him a lemon-meringue pie for his birthday a couple weeks ago

SARCO you mother fucker, I already spent so much money and I'm literally on the way to go spend another 2 grand, why must you do this to me? I don't even have an M1A and I want one of these for when I do get one.
>>
>>60902691
I love everything you post, baker bro. That's pretty funny how you snuck it in like that. I probably won't be able to pull that off, but I hope I can present it to him soon. I'll probably keep it a surprise then. I kind of clued him in a couple of weeks ago when I told him my brother, and I ordered him something through the mail, though I'm not sure if he's familiar with the CMP at all. I'm just a bit worried since I'm moving out of state in about 90 days, but I'm sure the rifle will arrive before then.
>>
>>60900726
So then let’s be objective because a PTR is only 200 off from a DSA cold warrior, which is the better soldiers rifle and overall rifle? We must decide!
>>
>>60902948
PTR shoots steel and is probably more reliable t. Has FALs
>>
>>60895931
The 7.62x51 / .308 is a very popular hunting round and works well with the AR platform, and it's not a "LARP" if you are actually going to kill government men in the Revolution.
>>
>>60902965
Wait Can the FAL not shoot steel?
>>
>>60903050
The second FAL I built cycled steel super well. The first I built wouldn't though. They're weird rifles. I think, overall, the HK91 pattern is better. Better aftermarket, more consistently reliable, more accurate and way cheaper (and better) mags.
>>
>>60903050
You shouldn't but people do
>>
>>60903076
>Better aftermarket
When will this meme die?
>>
>>60903451
Is it a meme?
>>
>>60902965
>>60903050
>>60903173
So under this logic any AR-15 with a chrome lined chamber shouldn't use steel cased ammo if you read into the fudd lore. DSA told people in the late 2000's/early 2010's to not use steel cased ammo because all that was around then was inconsistent Wolf and Tula. Which had massive changes in pressures which would change the cycling between rounds. You can run steel if it has some level of quality other than those not coming from a shithole.
>>
>>60903458
Name one aftermarket feature the FAL lacks that the PTR/G3 does not.
>>
>>60903544
Ah okay that actually makes a lot of sense. Plus in theory having the gas regulator on an adverse setting should push it out all the same, no?
>>60903554
I was genuinely asking, I have no idea
>>
>>60903544
FAL has a fairly violent action and can tear heads off cases, especially sticky laqured steelcase. PTR is fluted so mitigates extraction friction.
>>60903554
Welded rail. However that's not aftermarket
>>
>>60903657
Welded rail is a big one, especially since from what I understand, the FALs dust cover is rather flimsy and wouldn’t hold zero if you did weld a rail on it
>>
>>60903634
Both have aftermarket handguards and stocks. Both can mount AR-15 stocks off of a buffer tube system. Both have pic rail optics mounts. People complain about the DSA rails when it comes to cleaning. I fail to see how just not removing the dust cover is any different than any other rifle that isn't an AK or VZ.58. Both can mount whatever muzzle devices. I would honestly say the FAL has better options if you want a different pistol grip since the G3 your options are basically with a thumb rest or not or you have to run a navy trigger housing. The only real perk that draws me to the G3 over the FAL as an American shooter is the current prices of magazines which will eventually change, and the blue training ammo and bolts are still floating around and that was fun for the few rounds I blasted out of my PTR before I sold it. Finally touching on the magazine situation with FALs. DSA announced at SHOT they are going to have steel magazines available sometime this year for $35. I know SHOT show prices and timeframes should be taken as seriously as a drunk guy saying 'I love you' to a stripper. But there is still something to look forward to.

Blue Locktite the screws and there is zero issues. If you are still concerned about the screws moving put a mark across the screws with a sharpie onto the cover to see if any shift happens. Still concerned? Peen the screws. Bam. You have a solid optics mounting solultion without being married to having a Lego tumor on your rifle if you want a 'classic' look again.
>>
>>60903711
You seem to know a bit, so I got another question for you about the FAL. Between the para and regular fixed stock FALs, is there a difference in accuracy and a meaningful difference in how they feel? I ask accuracy because 9 hole reviews are shit with the para FAL but got a rather decent run wih the fixed stock
>>
>>60902743
>Pistol grip on M14 or M1/a
This should be illegal.
>>
>>60903757
>9 hole
The para run they did is a fairly old video of theirs and they have self-admitted to their skills greatly improving since then. But they have also noted most rifles with 2 setting sights tend to not do well on a fixed range given their lack of fine range adjustment. If you nitice Henry is constantly changing his ranges on sights. So on a fixed range its best to have access to as many correcting tools as possible.
>Feeling
Not 100% sure here in all honesty. The para FALs have a slightly different recoil spring system. Fixed stock rifles have a spring that is contained in the stock akin to the AR-15, but para FALs have one in the receiver with the bolt carrier. So I would guess there would be a difference in the way the recoil feels to the shooter.

Eeeeeyyyyep, you used rust remover on a blued steel part didn't you? Bluing is just rust with more oxygen. May as well evaporust the whole thing at this point and try rust bluing or brush on bluing. If you want rust bluing you should've just boiled it to convert it and use some #0000 steel wool to knock off the rest of the non-converted rust. Then absolutely soak it in oil for a day or so before wiping it off.

HOWEVER, if it just degreased the hell out of the receiver, this may be a simple fix. Wipe it down with oil until it's dripping and let it soak in all the oil it wants. Hopefully, it's just degreased. HOPEFULLY. My shotgun got several shades darker after I wiped it down with grease and let it sit. I don't think it had any protection applied since it was made in the 90s. Before application, it looked like the left. After wiping it off it looked almost like the right. The waterline looks like it has damage for sure though. Rough.
>>
>>60906279
Honestly just looks a little dirty and dry. Soap and water. Dry well. Take care around the stamp on the front of the magwell assuming that's original (I doubt it). Wipe with oil or grease. Wipe off. My AR looks similar after hunting and shit, especially in wet weather from minerals and dirt in the snow, etc. drying on the surface. Use a degreaser on it and it REALLY looks like that.

The error should be so hight that its streching over the full weight of low and high loads for the 9mm,lol. We did low and see how its going. Maybe we are below low, at max load or something inbetween. Not a big deal, I got a very based scale (Can do a pic later) but its not calibrated since 10years so IDK how off she is. Now that I have more time to respond, I'll just compare some basic differences between the two rifles. Say on a FAL you want a paratrooper stock. Well in that case you'll need a new trigger housing/lower, a new bolt carrier in addition to the folding stock. On an HK pattern you would simply replace two pins. Mounting optics? Great on the FAL you can get a dust cover mount but that's not ideal, plus its a tilt bolt and while its likely accurate than most shooters, its still not inherently mechanically accurate. On the HK, you have a claw mount, or a railed receiver. My concession in terms of economics for the FAL is that they're way easier to work on. I had built them in my garage when I was 21. With that said, parts kits have dried up, and now you could get a PTR-91 for the cost of parts kit, receiver and still have money for magazines.

Speaking of magazines, you have terrible options. DSA makes out of spec mags. The FALfiles is a shitstorm with the DSA rep trying to defend their practices right now. They even shut down the forum for this last week. So, on the primary market you have thermolds (lol), DSAs, and korean junk. Here's an example, even in 2018 when I still messed with FALs 34 bucks for a magazine wasn't too unusual, although you'd expect better condition for the price.

https://whatacountry.com/dented---original-metric-20-round-fal-308-magazine.aspx

For 34 dollars you could get four or five NOS G3 magazines. They're lighter and, in my opinion, better than FAL mags in general. The only worse example of magazine availability of the big 3 is M14 mags (again, speaking from experience). Pic rel was the first FAL I ever built. I wish I still had it, I traded it for a fucking PSL with an out of spec scope mount. I wish the FAL was cheaper. I mourn for the days I could buy a parts kit for 450 bucks and a receiver for 350, but they're long gone.

Didn't mean to come off as being a dick. I just get tired of people acting like the FAL is some pile of dogshit. But at current price offerings I have to agree the PTR is a better choice. I just hate using them and have had shit experiences with them.
>>60911238
I didn't know the Vltor handguard was discontinued. I am kinda saddened by that. I have seen some people like some mlok handguard that is available right now.
>>60911397
Shame you sold that rifle for such a dog. I did that with a Colt 6920 that was built at the trail end of Colt being kinda Colt for a PTR91. My particular PTR range like shit and I knew it was something with the rollers or bolt because the few blue DAG rounds I put through it with the training bolt ran flawlessly. I made sure to get through PTRs recommended 'break in peroid' and the rifle was still being a pile of dogshit. I ended up selling it. I still have 10 G3 mags for if I ever feel like being stupid again or build a parts kit.

The whole thing that kicked off this discussion was my initially raising the point that if the G3 and FAL were both priced the same on the market I don't think the FAL would get as much shit as it does. That is me admitting from a practical point of view the PTR/G3 is better with the current situation with prices and accessory availability. Also I agree in my distrust of DSA with their questionable QC at times. I don't think they have ever made a functioning magazine. But I am still hoping the ones they announced at SHOT for $35 is true, they function, and they are actually sold at that price point. Becuase if they turn out to be good I may be getting an Imbel kit and a type 3 receiver and making a carbon copy of your old rifle as a companion to my Israeli FAL.

I forgot they ever announced those mags. I hope they're good and priced reasonably, then at least I can paint one and use them without feeling bad about it. The three FAL mags I've managed to get are all Israeli; I guess that's all we're getting at the moment. I have a (supposed) Rhodie G3 mag for reference so painting shouldn't go bad. I should have saved it but I didn't know it was from his personal collection. I just thought it was anon posting a pic they found.

>Wait what’s goin on with the DSA rep??
Gun Plumber is a 40something year old FAL expert that has been building FALs his entire life. He posts here in /brg/ and FAL Files but as you can guess, guy has extreme autism. He will rag on DSA for; historically inaccuracies, PR spin or general misinformation. Basically, a DSA Rep said "Thing", then Gun Plumber said "Achtually" and laid some truth bombs in retribution. To me and you, this is a nothing burger cause who cares about FAL details from 60years ago, but Gun Plumber has a reputation as an expert which he earned, so his fans dog piled the DSA Rep. I'm not salty about it, I mean the Rep isn't salty about it.

A whole lotta fuzz about nothing important that matters. If DSA can deliver or not is an unknown until we get our hands on their competitively priced and hand machined high quality FAL production line of historically "inspired" FAL accessories.

They aren't really cheap anymore, the 716i is a currently issued (poo in loo) BR but I grant that it's not as cool as an FAL.
>>
>>60920469
>They aren't really cheap anymore, the 716i
I thought you were bullshitting cause I swore I saw them for $1200 not long ago. Checked again and those were the 5.56 Sig Tread. D'oh. Yeah, the 716i Sig Tread in .308 have gone from $1300 average to $1600 average. You missed your chances. I kept telling y'all they were amazing rifles with great features at a low prices, way before our Kween Hopp and others jumped on the bandwagon.

Let me play the world's smallest violin for those that missed out. Of course prices are going to rise more often than fall. They only ever fall if the stars align. Make your list of what you want, at what prices you can pay and stick to it. This is a general life advice too. Don't just wing it, reacting to what others are doing. You'll always be behind the curve, with left overs.
>>
>>60921609
I'm hoping I can get a 716i tread for $1500 from a local dealer sure it's a few hundred over what they were a while back but I'm only getting it for fun anyway and I can easily sell it on if I don't like it. I was thinking about a 1-8x from Primary, I'm imagining it being closer to dmr than br though I know the 16in barrel isn't ideal for that I think it'll still do fine. I don't have any cans as of yet, I've just never really cared enough to jump through the NFA hoops but I think I'll get one for the 716i. I'm wondering what muzzle device I should use, perhaps a surefire per shot show B&T is planning on bringing some interesting surefire compatible cans for compelling prices to the US market so I think I'll hold out but I can always buy the muzzle device ahead of time.

>I'm imagining it being closer to dmr than br though I know the 16in barrel isn't ideal for that I think it'll still do fine.
There's not much difference between 16" and 20" .308 barrels for ARs. Any gains of distance reach and accuracy are speculative at best. If you're trying to reach beyond 600yards, a good bolt action will run circles around ARs for accuracy, reach and consistency.

>I've just never really cared enough to jump through the NFA hoops but I think I'll get one for the 716i. I'm wondering what muzzle device I should use
Most of the Sig Tread 716i came with a Sig Silencer muzzle device. It's the later Sig Tread models like Snake Bite and V2 that went back to muzzle Brakes. Check to see which model of Sig Tread you're buying. I'm not an expert but I think:

>Snake Bite = Cerakote FDe, Flat Blade Trigger, Muzzle Brake
>716i = Flash Hider Silencer Compatible (pictured), Military style trigger
If you want a Sig Silencer, get the original 716i. But Snake Bite is the better overall package.

Lubeanon, getting into trapping got me thinking about something. Currently the only way to keep a trap from freezing or rusting while set is paraffin (or bees) wax or some proprietary trap lube products. Do you think your lube would be scent-free enough for such a use? Winter and the trapping season is pretty much over but would you be interested in some data via email if I were to trap next season and compare waxed vs Nano? The winter Nano might be a good place to test this too since it sits outside for weeks on end under snow and leaves.

I may still need to do some finish stuff to get it there but we'll see the disparity when it arrives. Also got enough steel mags to fill my BW harness. if I want to display a gun on a wall and forget about it without it rusting in a humid enviroment is wax still my best option? does the wax property change if I buff it on the steel or if I just dunk the gun in melted wax and remove the excess?
>>
>>60938974
Dude, what Anon got is also GOAT for wallguns. Chemical related to modern military Cosmoline and not stupid wax made by Bongs. In terms of salt (costal), humidity and water resistance its beating wax by more than just a bit while being way easier to use. Wipe a nice film on a firearm and put it on the wall. Overnight it will transform into sof wax and after weeks its changing into a Cosmoline film that is pretty much invisible. There isnt even a need to clean the gun before usage, so its Cosmoline but without all the Cons.
In the video you see a old Prototype from last year (left), Eezox (middle) and RenWax (left). That old Prototype is much weaker in all aspects, from salt to watr resistance compared to the product we exported into the USA. And pic related from today, sitting outside since 23th September. That invisible waxy film managed to prevent rust for 80 days of rain (not just 80days), now we´re over 100days of rain and still going pretty good. Whats funny is the fact that 1gramm of RemOil leaves less of a permanent film than my DRI, because its 80% solvent and 20% wax but its still unable to penetrate like DRI and buildup when used in bulk is worse.

Looking into what it takes to clip and pin, it'll be fine. Some elbow grease and patience with a hand file and I'll be right as rain. Nifty. What an odd thing for them to have. I should see if they still have that hawk 12ga kit on there since someone came up with a decent printed 870 receiver.

Is that why 870 parts are so fucking hard to come by?! I bought one and was looking for furniture and couldn't find even a used set for under like $60 shipped. I also have my eye out for cheap barrels threaded for chokes and THAT is not happening, threaded or not.

It was fun to rock the white name for as long as I did, I'm sure I got reported plenty because of it though. Wonder what's going to replace EOD, I'm glad I upgraded while I still could.

It's funny, I passed on 1 of 3 Rhodie kits Mark had when I bought my unissued FALO kit. As an after thought, I glibly mentioned I didn't even dicker on the price and didn't even have any mags, so he pulled out a box from under the table and cherry picked me 3 matching Izzy mags. The box had worn Rhodie painted mags too, prolly og. How the market has changed since Q1 2020.

Animals are good frens. Burderer, lels this one keeps bringing me moles that are torn in half. One cat of two I have, this one came with the house. No idea on the age, I'm guessing under 5. Feral-ish still but food is a good tool, now she's all over me all the time and won't shut up. Still very independent and uses teeth and claws to tell me to stop doing what I'm doing, but I can pick her up and pet her all over and she doesn't care too much.
